Create a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for App ID 730 in Steam’s game-server account manager, then give it to your Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server with +sv_setsteamaccount at launch or sv_setsteamaccount in the server configuration. Restart the server and inspect its console output if it does not appear in the Community List.
What a GSLT is and why CS2 uses one
A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) is a credential that associates a dedicated game server with a Steam account. Counter-Strike 2 and its dedicated server use App ID 730. The token is supplied when the server starts, or read from the server configuration, so Steam can identify the server session.

The token is not the same thing as your Steam password, but it must be protected like a password or API key. Anyone who obtains it may be able to use it in a server configuration. Do not publish it in a guide, screenshot, issue report, chat message, or source-control repository.
Prepare the account and server
Have these items ready before creating the token:
- The Steam account that you want associated with the server.
- Access to Steam’s game-server account management page: steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers.
- Administrative access to the machine running the CS2 dedicated server.
- The command or script you use to start the server, or the
server.cfgfile that the server loads. - A secure place to copy the token temporarily while you configure the server.
Community guides mention account conditions such as a linked phone number, Steam Guard, a non-limited Steam account, and possible CS2 ownership requirements. Those conditions are not confirmed here against current Valve documentation, so treat any eligibility message shown by Steam as authoritative for your account rather than assuming that every account can create a token.

Create the GSLT in Steam
- Sign in to Steam with the account you want tied to the server.
- Open the Steam game server account management page.
- In the App ID field, enter 730. CS2 and the CS2 dedicated server share this App ID.
- Enter a memo that identifies the server. Use a useful label such as its location or role, but do not put the token itself in the memo.
- Select Create.
- Copy the token immediately and store it in a protected password manager or other restricted location. Guides describe the resulting value as a 32-character hexadecimal string, so copy every character exactly and do not add spaces or quotation marks to the token itself.
A memo is only an administrator-facing label; it does not configure the server. The token becomes active for the server only after you pass it to CS2 with one of the methods below.
Add the token as a launch parameter
Passing the value at startup follows the Valve Developer Community wiki’s documented form: +sv_setsteamaccount <TOKEN>. Replace YOUR_GSLT_TOKEN with the value you copied. Keep the token as one shell argument; quoting it is a safe way to prevent shell parsing from changing the value.
Linux startup
Add the parameter to the command or startup script that launches the dedicated server:
./cs2.sh -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount "YOUR_GSLT_TOKEN"If your existing script already contains options, append +sv_setsteamaccount to that same command rather than creating a second, competing startup command. Save the script, then stop and start the server so the new process receives the parameter.

Windows startup
For a Windows executable, a commonly used form is:
.cs2.exe -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount TOKEN +map de_dust2Replace TOKEN with the actual GSLT. The +map de_dust2 portion is an example map argument, not part of the token setup; keep your normal map or game-mode arguments if you already use different ones.
Launch parameters are easy to audit in a startup script, but they can also be visible in the running process command line. On a shared host, restrict who can view processes and the script file.
Add the token in server.cfg
You can put the setting in the server.cfg file that your CS2 server loads:

Place the line in the configuration chain early enough that it is read during startup. A forum report says ordering can matter, but that advice is community-reported and is not confirmed by an official Valve reference. If another configuration later overwrites the value, move this line earlier in the files that your server actually loads and check the startup console for evidence of which configuration files were processed.
Keep the file readable only by the account that runs the server and administrators who need to maintain it. A configuration file is plain text, so it offers persistence across restarts but does not encrypt the token.

Use one clearly managed source of truth. If you put different tokens in a launch command and a configuration file, troubleshooting becomes ambiguous because you cannot immediately tell which value the server used.
Restart and verify the server
- Stop the running CS2 dedicated server cleanly.
- Confirm that the command or configuration file contains the intended token, with no missing characters, extra spaces, or accidental placeholder text.
- Start the server using the updated script or configuration.
- Read the server console and log output during startup. Look for GSLT-related errors or other indications that the setting was rejected.
- After startup completes, check the CS2 Community List. If the server is absent, use the troubleshooting sequence below instead of repeatedly creating tokens.
A server list result alone is not a substitute for checking the startup path: the process may be running with an old script, may not have loaded the file you edited, or may be using a mistyped value. The console and the actual process configuration establish what the server attempted to use.

Troubleshoot a server missing from the Community List
1. Confirm that the token is still valid
Community troubleshooting guidance first recommends checking whether the GSLT remains valid. Return to Steam’s game-server account management page and make sure you are looking at the account and token associated with this server. Do not assume that a token copied for another machine is the one currently configured here.
2. Confirm that CS2 is actually receiving the token
Compare the live startup command with the command you edited. For a launch-based setup, verify that +sv_setsteamaccount appears in the command passed to the executable. For a config-based setup, verify that the server loads the particular server.cfg you changed and that the line has no leading plus sign. A correctly created token has no effect if the running process never reads it.
3. Read the console for GSLT errors
Inspect the complete startup output rather than only the final “server ready” line. A GSLT error can distinguish an invalid value from a configuration-loading problem. Preserve the exact error text when asking for help, but redact the token before sharing logs.
4. Check configuration order
If the line is present but the server behaves as though it is unset, move the setting earlier in the configuration chain. This is based on a forum user’s report, not a guaranteed engine rule, so use the change as a diagnostic test and verify the result in the console.

5. Recheck the token character by character
A GSLT is commonly described as a 32-character hexadecimal string. Compare the copied value with the value shown in Steam, paying attention to leading or trailing characters and to quotation marks. Quotes may surround the value in a command or config line, but they are not part of the token.
Token allocation, expiry, and account limitations
Several operational claims circulate in community guides but are not verified by an official Valve source in the available documentation:

Treat this as community guidance rather than a published Valve guarantee, and label tokens so you can tell which server each one was intended for.
- Inactivity expiry: one guide claims a token expires after about five weeks of inactivity. That is a single, unverified report, not a time limit you should rely on. If a previously working server disappears from the list, check token validity and console errors rather than assuming a fixed expiry schedule.
- Account eligibility: linked phone numbers, Steam Guard, limited-account restrictions, and CS2 ownership are all mentioned by guides as possible requirements. Steam’s current account-management page determines whether your account can create a token.
Because these points are not established by a primary reference here, avoid designing operations around an exact expiry date or assuming that an account requirement applies universally.
Protect the GSLT on the host
- Handle the token as you would a password or API key.
- Do not include it in screenshots, public bug reports, chat transcripts, tutorials, or paste sites.
- Do not commit a startup script or
server.cfgcontaining the token to a repository. - Restrict permissions on scripts, configuration files, backups, and logs that might contain the command line.
- Redact the token before sharing console output while troubleshooting.
- When migrating a server, copy the value through a protected channel and review the destination file permissions before starting the new instance.
Both supported methods store the credential in plain text somewhere on the host: a launch parameter exposes it through the process invocation, while server.cfg exposes it to readers of the file. Choose the location that fits your access controls and administration workflow, not one that assumes the token is encrypted.
GSLT setup checklist
- Steam account selected and signed in.
- Game-server account page opened at steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers.
- App ID entered as 730.
- Memo added and token created.
- Full token copied without alteration and stored privately.
- Either
+sv_setsteamaccount "TOKEN"added to the launch command orsv_setsteamaccount "TOKEN"added to the loadedserver.cfg. - Leading plus sign omitted from the configuration-file form.
- Server restarted with the changed command or file.
- Console and logs checked for GSLT errors.
- Community List checked only after confirming that the running process used the new value.
Following this sequence gives the server a token created for the correct CS2 App ID and makes the two common failure points—an invalid credential and a credential that was never loaded—easy to distinguish.
