The most reliable way to add an animated GIF in WordPress is to use the Block Editor’s standalone Image block: insert Image, choose Upload or Media Library, select the original .gif file, add meaningful alt text, and publish or update the post. You can also use Insert from URL, but an externally hosted file can disappear if its owner moves, deletes, or stops sharing it.
If WordPress shows a still frame instead of animation, make sure you selected the full GIF rather than a thumbnail. For opaque animated GIFs, newer WordPress clients may offer Display as video, which creates a companion MP4 or WebM and plays it through a GIF variation of the Video block.

What you need before adding the GIF
Have the animated file available as a GIF, or have the direct image URL ready. “Direct” means a URL that points to the image file itself, not to a web page containing the image. Use only artwork, screen recordings, memes, or other animation that you have permission to publish. Copyright, publicity, and licensing rules still apply when the file came from a public website.
Decide whether the animation communicates information or is merely decorative. If readers need to understand an action, describe that action in nearby text; an animation should not be the only way to receive important information. You will also need a short, useful alt-text description and, when necessary, a caption explaining the context.

Add a GIF with the WordPress Block Editor
These steps apply to a standard post or page in the current WordPress Block Editor. The same Image block is documented for both posts and pages in WordPress’s Image block guide and its image-insertion guide.
- Open the editor. In your WordPress dashboard, open an existing post or page or choose the command to create a new one.
- Insert an Image block. Select the + Block Inserter, search for Image, and select it. You can also place the cursor where the GIF belongs, type
/image, and press Enter. - Choose how to provide the file. Select Upload for a GIF on your computer, Media Library for an attachment already stored on the site, or Insert from URL for an externally hosted image.
- Confirm the asset. Check that the selected item is the animated GIF itself, not a JPEG preview, a static thumbnail, or a different frame exported by another service.
- Add alternative text. In the Image block settings, write a concise description of the animation’s meaning or function. Do not list every frame.
- Add context if needed. Enter a caption when readers need to know what the GIF demonstrates, where it came from, or why the motion matters.
- Adjust presentation. Use the block toolbar and settings to resize or align the image. Keep enough width for important details to remain legible.
- Save the change. Select Publish for a new post or page, or Update for an existing one. View the public page to verify playback outside the editor.
Upload a new GIF
Choose Upload and select the file from your device. WordPress adds the file to the Media Library and places it in the Image block. This is the best choice when you want a local copy under your site’s control. The attachment can be reused later without depending on another host.
Reuse a GIF from the Media Library
Select Media Library, search or browse the existing attachments, and choose the GIF. Reusing an attachment avoids creating another copy and lets you manage its metadata from the site’s media area. Confirm the attachment is still animated; a library may contain both the original GIF and a static preview exported from it.
Insert a GIF from a URL
Select Insert from URL, paste the image URL, and press Enter. This can be useful for a one-off image when you do not control the source file. It is less reliable for long-lived content because the image may stop displaying if the original file is moved, deleted, or no longer shared. The WordPress Image block documentation explicitly warns about that dependency. For durable posts, download a permitted copy and upload it to your Media Library instead.

Why a GIF can appear as a still image
A GIF can look static when the editor or a plugin has inserted a thumbnail, when an optimization process replaced the original file, or when the selected attachment is actually a still image. The first diagnostic step is to open the Media Library item and verify that the file is an animated GIF. If you used a URL, open that URL directly in a browser and confirm that it delivers the animated file rather than a preview page.
Use the original file in an Image block
Insert the full GIF through the standalone Image block. Avoid selecting a thumbnail generated by a gallery, media-management plugin, or external site. If the original file animates when opened directly but not in your post, remove the existing media block and insert the original again.

Current WordPress client-side media processing can show a Display as video control in the Image block toolbar for some opaque animated GIFs. Selecting it changes the standalone Image block to a GIF variation of the Video block and creates a companion MP4 or WebM. WordPress says this can reduce download size dramatically while preserving the look and feel of an animated GIF. The conversion is optional and reversible.
The converted media is represented as video, so the Video block’s playback controls can apply. WordPress documents settings for Autoplay, Loop, Muted, and Play inline in its Video block documentation. Review those settings after conversion, especially if the animation should repeat or start silently without a reader pressing Play.

Cases where conversion is unavailable
Transparent animated GIFs are not converted because common video formats cannot reproduce GIF transparency in the same way. Browsers without WebCodecs video encoding also fall back to uploading the original GIF; the developer guide identifies Firefox as an example. In those cases, the Image block continues to use the GIF file.
The conversion control is associated with a standalone Image block. Galleries, Media & Text blocks, and Cover media do not offer the same Image-block conversion control. If you need the option, insert the GIF as its own Image block first rather than nesting it in one of those layouts.

Choosing the right insertion method

For most permanent articles, Upload or Media Library is the safer default. URL insertion is a dependency on another site, not a copy of the asset.
Original GIF or GIF video variation?

Use the original when transparency is essential or when conversion is unavailable. Consider the video variation when the Image block offers it and the GIF is opaque, particularly when the original file is large enough to slow page delivery.

Accessibility and editorial checks
Write functional alt text
Describe what the animation conveys, not every individual frame. For example, “Menu icon opens, then the Settings panel slides into view” tells a reader what the GIF demonstrates. If the GIF is purely decorative and the surrounding text already provides the information, follow your site’s accessibility policy for decorative images rather than adding a redundant description.
Supply context in surrounding text
Motion can be distracting or difficult to follow for some readers. Explain the important action in prose, especially when timing, flashing, or rapid changes affect comprehension. A still image or a short, deliberately controlled video may communicate the same point more clearly than a looping GIF.
Use captions deliberately
A caption is useful when the reader needs context that does not belong in alt text, such as “Three-step checkout demonstration” or an attribution required by the license. Do not use a caption merely to repeat the alt text.

This is an alternative to WordPress’s built-in Image block, not a requirement for uploading a local GIF. Consider where the media is hosted, whether your site permits the service, and whether you need the standalone Image block’s optional Display as video control.

Performance and maintenance
Animated GIFs can contain many full-size frames, so a file that looks small on screen can still be expensive to download. The built-in GIF-to-video path exists specifically to reduce transfer size for eligible opaque animations. If the control is unavailable, keep the source dimensions appropriate for the content area and avoid uploading a needlessly oversized original.
After publishing, test the public page at the width your readers use. Confirm that the first frame is understandable if playback is delayed, that looping is intentional, and that the animation does not obscure nearby links or controls. If you replace a GIF later, update the attachment or block deliberately and check old posts that may reference the original URL.
Troubleshooting checklist
- It is completely static: verify that the file extension and attachment are an animated GIF, then reinsert the original in a standalone Image block.
- Only a thumbnail appears: select the full Media Library attachment or upload the original instead of a generated preview.
- Display as video is missing: the GIF may contain transparency, the browser may lack WebCodecs encoding, or the media may be inside a Gallery, Media & Text, or Cover block.
- The GIF worked and later vanished: an external URL may have changed, been deleted, or stopped being shared. Upload a licensed copy to your Media Library.
- The converted version does not behave as expected: open the Video block settings and check Autoplay, Loop, Muted, and Play inline.
- Readers cannot understand the motion: add explanatory text and a useful caption, or replace the animation with a still image or short video.
- The page feels slow: use Display as video when WordPress offers it for an opaque GIF, or reduce the source dimensions before uploading while preserving the detail readers need.
Quick verification before you publish
- Open the GIF file or direct URL outside WordPress and confirm that it animates.
- Insert it with the standalone Image block, not a static thumbnail.
- Choose Upload or Media Library for content that must remain available.
- Check alt text, caption, alignment, and displayed dimensions.
- For eligible opaque GIFs, decide whether Display as video is appropriate.
- Preview the public post on more than one browser and confirm the animation, controls, and surrounding text work as intended.
WordPress’s standard workflow is therefore straightforward: Image block, Upload or Media Library, original GIF, alt text, and Publish or Update. URL insertion is convenient but less durable, while the optional GIF video variation can substantially reduce transfer size when transparency and browser support permit it.
