You can add disc playback to a compatible PS5 Digital Edition by installing Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive, model series CFI-ZDD1. Compatibility depends on the console model, not just the fact that it is called a PS5 Digital Edition. Sony’s support setup guide uses the broader CFI-2000/7000 grouping, while its product listing names CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Editions and PS5 Pro. The CFI-2100 information clarifies that those models use CFI-2000 accessories. Because Sony’s pages use different shorthand, rely on the exact console model and the current regional accessory listing rather than assuming every Digital Edition is compatible. If your console is in one of the listed compatible groups, the next question is whether the disc capability is worth the separate purchase. If it is a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, do not buy this detachable drive expecting it to add physical game or movie support. If you cannot match the printed model number to Sony’s current local listing, resolve that uncertainty before ordering.
What the drive adds—and what it does not
The CFI-ZDD1 is a Sony accessory sold separately. When fitted to a compatible console, it lets the PS5 use supported physical PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, and supported movie discs, including 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. Compatibility depends on the game and disc format. The drive adds an option for supported discs; it does not change the console into a reader for every optical format.
For a player with supported physical games already on hand, the drive can make those discs usable on a compatible Digital Edition. It can also be relevant if you want to use eligible used games or play supported movie discs. These benefits only apply when both conditions are met: the console is compatible and the particular game or disc format is supported. If your games and media are all digital, or your intended discs are in an unsupported format, the accessory may not provide the capability you want.

Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during initial setup. Its cited setup information establishes that requirement for pairing; it does not establish a general ongoing internet requirement for disc playback. In other words, plan to have internet access available when you first set up the installed drive, but do not confuse the one-time pairing requirement with a claim that the console must stay online whenever you play a disc.
Sony’s product listing says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. Separately, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said physical game disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028, citing shifts in consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry. This statement concerns production of new game discs; it does not mean the drive stops reading supported discs already available. It also is not a promise that every title, regardless of format or compatibility, will work.

For a purchase decision, compare your own needs rather than looking for a different drive model: Sony’s detachable CFI-ZDD1 is the accessory identified for these compatible consoles, and the cited information does not establish a competing third-party drive as compatible. Weigh the separate purchase against how often you expect to use supported physical games, used games, or movie discs. No price is assumed here; check Sony’s current regional listing and the retailer you intend to use for the actual cost and availability.
Prepare for installation
Have the compatible console and the separately purchased Sony Disc Drive ready. Choose a flat surface and place a soft cloth on it to protect the console while it is turned over. You will also need an internet connection for the initial pairing process. Sony’s procedure begins with the console powered down and disconnected, so do not try to attach the drive while the system is running.

- Keep the short horizontal feet and the circular cover you remove. They are needed if you later remove the drive and restore the console’s original configuration.
Before beginning, make sure you have the Disc Drive and the longer horizontal feet supplied with it. The installation changes the cover-and-feet configuration: the circular cover and short feet come off, while the supplied cover and long feet are fitted after the drive is secured. Keep the removed pieces together somewhere safe rather than discarding them. They are the parts Sony identifies as needed if the drive is removed later.
Also prepare the space for the console itself. Sony’s instructions call for a flat surface with a soft cloth and the console positioned bottom-up, front facing you. This gives you a stable working position for releasing the cover and aligning the clips. The key precaution is to complete the shutdown, unplugging, and cooling steps before handling the console.
Install and pair the Disc Drive
- Turn off and unplug the PS5. Use the control center to turn it off. Disconnect the AC power cord and all other cables, then wait for the console to cool.
- Position the console. Place it bottom-up, with the front facing you, on a soft cloth over a flat surface. Remove the short horizontal feet.
- Remove the circular cover. Release the cover’s clips and lift the cover off.
- Align the drive. Match the Disc Drive clips to the two marked holes on the console.
- Secure the drive. Press the drive firmly into place until the clips click.
- Fit the supplied cover and feet. Install the circular cover and the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive. Store the removed cover and short feet safely for possible later removal.
- Reconnect and pair. Reconnect the power cord and other cables, then turn on the console. Connect to the internet so the console can pair with the drive during setup.
These steps follow Sony’s support instructions; they are not a claim of hands-on testing. If the clips do not click into place, stop and recheck the alignment with the marked holes rather than forcing the drive. The alignment step matters: the drive clips are meant to match the two marked holes, and pressing firmly is the final securing action once they are lined up.

Keep the order of the steps intact. The console is turned off, unplugged, and allowed to cool before it is turned bottom-up. The short feet and circular cover are removed to expose the attachment area. After the drive is clipped into place, use the cover and longer feet supplied with the drive. Only then reconnect the console and turn it on. Internet access is needed at that point for initial pairing.

If you later remove the Disc Drive, retain the original circular cover and short horizontal feet for that purpose. The accessory’s supplied cover and long feet are used in the installed configuration, while the pieces taken off during installation are the ones Sony says you will need if you remove the drive. Store both sets so the pieces do not get mixed up.
Know which discs the PS5 can read
Adding the drive does not make every optical-disc format compatible. Sony lists these supported and unsupported formats:

Even a supported format does not guarantee that every title or disc will work: Sony notes that compatibility varies by title and format. Check the specific game or movie format if you are buying discs for a particular use. The list is useful as a first filter: for example, a CD remains unsupported even after installation, and an unfinalized DVD is not made playable by the drive. Similarly, BD-R/RE XL and BD-RE version 1.0 are specifically listed as unsupported despite the general support for BD-R and BD-RE.
For movies, Sony identifies 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback among the drive’s uses, subject to supported formats. For games, Sony lists PS5 games and supported PS4 titles. Treat the format list and title compatibility as separate checks: first determine whether the disc type is listed as supported, then confirm that the particular title is compatible. A disc being optical media by itself is not sufficient.

Decide whether the add-on fits your use
The decision is mainly about whether you want physical-disc access and whether your exact PS5 model supports the accessory. The drive may be useful if you want to use supported physical games you already own, access eligible used games, or play supported movie discs. If you only use digital games and digital media, the accessory may not add a feature you need. Sony sells the drive separately, so account for that separate purchase when deciding.
There is no supported comparison here among multiple drives or alternate add-on models. The meaningful comparison is between your console model and the Sony listing, and between the disc access you expect to use and the extra purchase. The product listing, rather than a generic “PS5 Digital Edition” description or a third-party claim, is the basis for checking whether the CFI-ZDD1 is intended for your system.

Sony’s product listing also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. If future physical game availability is part of your decision, distinguish that statement from the separate announcement about production of new game discs starting to be discontinued from January 2028. Neither statement changes the need to check the console model, game title, and disc format.

Can I use the drive for PS4 games, movies, DVDs, or CDs?
