A custom icon appears in the multiplayer server list when the server has a correctly prepared image in the right folder and is restarted afterward. This guide shows how to create the image, install it on a self-hosted Java Edition server or hosting panel, refresh the client view, and diagnose a blank icon.

What the server icon is—and which servers this covers

The server icon is the small image shown beside a server entry in Minecraft’s multiplayer list. It identifies your server before a player joins, so a simple logo, symbol, or color pattern can make the correct entry easy to recognize when several servers are configured.

The procedure here applies to a self-hosted Minecraft Java Edition server. It covers files stored on your own computer, a rented virtual machine, or a game-hosting control panel that exposes the server files through a file manager or FTP. Custom-icon behavior for dedicated Bedrock servers is not established by the available documentation, so do not assume that this Java procedure works there.

The icon is not installed in the Minecraft client, resource-pack folder, world folder, or mods directory. It is a server-level file that the Java server reads from its top-level directory.

Prepare an image that Minecraft can read

Use the required dimensions

Create a square image measuring exactly 64 by 64 pixels. Other dimensions are ignored by the server. A file that looks square on screen is not necessarily 64 pixels square, so check the image properties or the resize dialog rather than relying on the canvas appearance.

At this size, details disappear quickly. Use a strong silhouette, a short letter mark, or a few high-contrast colors. Thick outlines and large shapes remain recognizable in the server list; hairline details, tiny text, photographic textures, and subtle gradients generally do not.

Save it as a real PNG

The file must be encoded as PNG. Changing the suffix of a JPEG to .png does not convert the image and will not satisfy the requirement. GIF files are not accepted for this purpose either. Export the image through an editor’s PNG option so the file’s internal format matches its extension.

Transparency is optional. If you use it, inspect the result against both light and dark backgrounds; a pale mark with a transparent background can become difficult to see in parts of the interface. A solid background is often easier for a small icon to read.

Editors and resizing methods

You can make the file in an image editor such as GIMP, Paint.net, Pixlr, or Canva, or use an image converter that accepts an upload and produces a resized PNG. The labels vary by application, but the workflow is the same:

  1. Open the source artwork or create a new square canvas.
  2. Set the canvas or resize target to 64 pixels wide and 64 pixels high.
  3. Keep the image square while resizing so the mark is not stretched.
  4. Preview the reduced version at its actual size. Remove details that become muddy or unreadable.
  5. Export or download it as PNG, then verify the resulting file’s dimensions and format.

If your original artwork is rectangular, crop it to a square before resizing, or place it on a square canvas with a background. Stretching a rectangular logo directly into a square can distort lettering and circles.

Use the exact filename

Rename the finished file to server-icon.png. The spelling, hyphen, lowercase letters, and extension all matter. On Linux, filename matching is case-sensitive, so Server-Icon.png, server-icon.PNG, and similar variants may not be recognized even though they look equivalent in a case-insensitive file browser.

Watch for hidden extensions. Some operating systems hide known extensions, which can leave a file named server-icon.png.png after you type the name manually. Enable visible extensions or inspect the file details and confirm that the complete name ends with one .png suffix.

Do not put spaces before or after the name, add a version number, or use a different filename and expect the server to find it automatically. The server looks for the conventional name in its root directory.

Locate the server root directory

The root is the top-level folder from which the server starts. You can identify it by locating server.properties and the world folder. The icon belongs directly in that same level, beside those items—not inside the world folder and not in a nested folder used for backups.

A typical self-hosted layout resembles this:

minecraft-server/
├── server.properties
├── server-icon.png
├── world/
└── (other server files)

The names of other files differ with the server version and setup. The reliable landmarks are server.properties and the active world directory. If you have several server installations, check which folder is used by the launch script or service; placing the image in an unused copy will have no visible effect.

Hosting panels and FTP

Control panels commonly provide a web file manager, while some require FTP or SFTP. Open the file area for the specific Java server and navigate to the directory containing server.properties. Upload server-icon.png into that directory. An upload to the account’s home folder, a logs folder, or a panel-wide file area is not the server root.

If the panel displays multiple instances, select the instance whose address players use. A correctly named file on a different instance cannot change the icon for the server you are checking.

Install the icon step by step

  1. Make a backup copy of the image. Keep the original artwork locally so you can resize or re-export it without losing quality.
  2. Confirm the file properties. Check that the image is 64×64 pixels, encoded as PNG, and named server-icon.png.
  3. Open the Java server’s root. Use the folder that contains server.properties and the active world folder.
  4. Copy or upload the file. Place it directly in that root, at the same level as server.properties. Do not place it in a subfolder.
  5. Check for duplicate names. If the file manager shows an older icon, replace it with the new file rather than leaving a second copy with a renamed suffix.
  6. Restart the server. A running server may continue using its previous file state; stop and start it through your normal launcher, service manager, or hosting-panel controls.
  7. Inspect the multiplayer list. In Java Edition, return to the server list and look at the entry associated with that server address.

If you administer the machine through a command-line service, use the service’s normal stop and start procedure instead of killing the process abruptly. The icon change itself does not require changing server.properties.

Make the new image appear in the client

After the server has restarted, the client may still display an older image or an empty slot in its saved server list. Remove and re-add the server entry, or otherwise clear the client’s cached server-list data, then refresh the list. This affects what your client displays; it does not alter the file on the server.

Check the entry using the exact address and port that players use. Looking at a different saved entry, a proxy address, or a second test server can make a successful installation appear to have failed.

Troubleshoot a missing or blank icon

A wrong icon commonly fails without a visible error: the server-list slot simply remains blank. Work through these checks in order, restarting after correcting a problem.

Symptom Likely cause Action
No icon and no obvious error The image does not meet one of the file requirements, or it is in the wrong directory. Recheck the image properties, full filename, and location beside server.properties; then restart.
The image appears in the file manager but not in Minecraft The server has not been restarted, or the client is showing cached server-list data. Restart the server, refresh the saved entry, and check the same address players use.
Only one of several servers shows the icon The file was uploaded to a different instance or installation. Identify the active root for each instance and place the file in the one bound to the address you selected.
A Linux installation ignores the file The capitalization differs from the expected lowercase name. Rename it exactly to server-icon.png, including the lowercase extension.
A log reports that the server icon failed to load At least one reported case involved an invalid image size. Re-export the artwork at the required dimensions and PNG format, replace the file, and restart. Treat the log wording as a diagnostic clue rather than proof of a particular cause.
The icon is technically present but difficult to recognize The artwork contains fine detail or low contrast that disappears at small size. Return to the source design, enlarge the main shape, increase contrast, and export a simpler version.

When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time. For example, first replace the file with a freshly exported copy, then restart, then refresh the client list. This makes it clear whether the issue came from the asset, the path, or cached display data.

Designing an icon that survives 64-pixel display

Prioritize one recognizable shape

At a small resolution, an icon works more like a badge than a miniature poster. Choose one subject—a letter, creature silhouette, tool, block, or geometric mark—and give it most of the canvas. A narrow border around the edge can separate the artwork from the server-list background.

Use contrast deliberately

Pair a dark shape with a light field or the reverse. Similar neighboring colors merge after reduction, especially when the client scales the image in the list. Test the exported file at 100 percent and at the approximate size shown in the multiplayer screen.

Test both transparent and solid versions

Transparency can produce a clean badge when the surrounding interface supplies a suitable background, but it can also make parts of the image vanish. Keep a solid-background alternative so you can switch designs without rebuilding the logo if the first version lacks contrast.

Java Edition scope and Bedrock uncertainty

The documented procedure targets Java Edition’s server-list icon convention. Bedrock dedicated servers use different server software and configuration conventions, and support for this particular file-based icon method has not been verified here. If your players connect through Bedrock, consult documentation for the exact Bedrock server implementation rather than copying the Java file blindly.

Mixed Java-and-Bedrock networks can add another layer: the address shown to a player may lead through a proxy or bridge rather than directly to the Java process. In that arrangement, install the icon on the component that supplies the server-list response, and verify behavior with the network’s administrator. The Java file instructions alone do not establish how a bridge will handle the image.

Final verification checklist

  • The artwork is square and has the required pixel dimensions.
  • The file is genuinely PNG rather than a renamed JPEG or another format.
  • The complete filename is server-icon.png, with lowercase spelling.
  • The file is directly in the active server root beside server.properties.
  • The selected root belongs to the server address being tested.
  • The server has been restarted since the upload or replacement.
  • The client’s saved server entry has been refreshed if the old display persists.
  • The design remains legible when reduced to the small multiplayer-list preview.

Once these checks pass, the icon should load as the server-list image for a Java Edition server. If the slot is still empty, repeat the path and filename checks first; those are the quickest ways to find an installation that was made in the wrong directory or with a subtly different name.
