To add a Bible reading ticker in OBS, create a text file with the current reading, add an OBS Text source, turn on Read from file, and place the source in the scene used for your YouTube stream. A volunteer can update the file as the reading changes; OBS does not automatically detect which words are being spoken. For scrolling text or more elaborate styling, use a Browser source that loads a local webpage or overlay.
Choose the ticker method that fits your service

Choose based on whether someone must update the text during the service, scrolling is needed, the ticker must follow speech automatically, the text will remain readable on mobile screens, and volunteers can hand off operation reliably. Also check compatibility with your OBS installation and the permissions for the translation you plan to display. The available documentation describes features, not comparative reliability testing.
Add a manually updated ticker with an OBS Text source
- Prepare the text file. Create a plain text file containing the current Bible reading, verse, or reference. Save it somewhere the computer running OBS can access. Keep it ready for the volunteer who will update it during the service.
- Add a Text source to the program scene. In OBS, select the scene used for the program output, then use the Sources panel’s add control to add a Text source. OBS’s sources guide explains how to add, position, and size sources. The exact source options can vary by operating system.
- Enable file reading. In the Text source properties, select Read from file and choose the text file. This makes the source display the file’s contents rather than fixed text entered in the properties.
- Style and position the text. Set a legible font size, color, and background or outline as needed. Position the source where it does not cover the pastor’s face, captions, or other essential content. Check it against the actual scene, not just the source’s bounding box.
- Preview the complete frame. Confirm the ticker is visible and readable at the intended output size. Check that the current reading appears, then have the operator responsible for updates change the file and verify the displayed text changes before relying on it during the service.
- Keep the update responsibility clear. Assign someone to update the file as the reading changes. A file-backed Text source displays its file; it does not listen to the pastor or identify verses automatically.
Build a more flexible ticker with a Browser source
Use a Browser source when you need scrolling motion, a more designed layout, or controls provided by a webpage or overlay. OBS describes Browser source as an embedded browser that can load a local file or URL and lets you configure its viewport width and height.

- Choose the page or overlay. Prepare a local HTML page or use an overlay URL from a service you have chosen. Confirm that the page provides the ticker behavior and controls you actually need; a Browser source does not create those features by itself.
- Add the Browser source. In the Sources panel for the scene used in the broadcast, add a Browser source and enter the local file or URL in its properties. Set the viewport width and height to suit the overlay’s layout.
- Fit it to the scene. Position and size the source, then preview the whole frame. Check that scrolling speed, line breaks, contrast, and text size work at the final output dimensions and do not obscure important content.
- Test the update workflow. Confirm how a volunteer changes the passage or reference and whether that change appears promptly. If an overlay depends on a network connection or separate controls, include that dependency in your service plan.
For either method, use the OBS sources guide for adding, positioning, and sizing sources, and the Browser Source guide for Browser source behavior and settings.

Make sure the ticker is in the YouTube output
The ticker is part of the video composed by OBS. Add it to the scene that is actually sent to YouTube, rather than only to a scene used for a local preview or a different program layout. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting with a stream URL and key and starting the stream from the encoder. Preserve your church’s existing continuous-broadcast workflow and confirm the ticker appears in the outgoing OBS scene.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance is not a guarantee that a continuous stream will stay connected indefinitely.
