There is no universal accessory that installs a 3.5 mm socket in a USB-C phone without using the USB-C port. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter puts the socket on the adapter, not in the phone. If you want to avoid carrying that adapter, use USB-C headphones or Bluetooth. If you require a jack built into the handset, the only conceivable route is a model-specific internal hardware modification, and its feasibility, safety and cost must be established by the phone manufacturer or a qualified repair specialist.
What “without a USB-C dongle” actually rules out
A phone’s 3.5 mm jack is a physical connector wired to audio circuitry inside the handset. When a manufacturer removes that connector, the case, circuit board and internal audio path are designed around the remaining ports. An accessory cannot create a new opening and wiring path in the body merely by plugging into USB-C.
A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter is therefore a socket on a short external device. It converts the phone’s digital USB audio into analog headphone output, then presents the familiar 3.5 mm receptacle. The plug still goes into the USB-C port, so it does not meet a literal requirement for a built-in jack or for leaving that port unused.

That is why there is no one-size-fits-all product for the exact request. The alternatives can remove the need to carry a dongle, but they do not turn the phone into a model that accepts a 3.5 mm plug directly.

First decide which problem you are solving
You want wired listening but do not want a separate adapter
USB-C headphones are the closest direct substitute. Their own plug contains the digital-audio interface, so there is no second piece between the phone and the headphones. Confirm that the handset supports USB audio and check whether the particular headset supports its microphone and in-line controls on that phone.
Bluetooth headphones solve the same carrying problem without occupying USB-C. They are useful when you need to charge while listening, but they introduce a battery, wireless pairing and latency considerations. Neither choice accepts an existing analog 3.5 mm plug.
You need to keep your existing 3.5 mm headphones
The documented solution is a USB-C-to-3.5 mm digital audio adapter. Android’s USB-C audio guidance states, “Only digital-to-analog adapters are allowed.” In practice, the adapter must contain a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) rather than relying on a passive wiring change.

You need charging and wired audio at the same time
Combined audio-and-charge adapters provide a 3.5 mm output alongside USB-C power passthrough. They remain external attachments, so they still fail the built-in-jack requirement. Passthrough designs can have additional limits. The phone, charger and adapter must negotiate power correctly, and some adapters do not pass through fast charging at the phone’s full rate. Treat charging support, audio support and microphone support as separate specifications.
You specifically require a socket built into the handset
That is an internal engineering project, not a normal accessory purchase. The exact phone model determines whether the mainboard has a spare audio path, whether there is room for a connector, how the case could be cut, and how the modified assembly would be protected from dust and moisture.

A repair shop would need to inspect the service documentation and board layout for your exact make, model number and regional variant. Without that evidence, a promised “universal headphone-jack kit” should be treated skeptically.
How USB-C headphone audio works
With USB-C audio, the phone sends digital sound as USB data. A DAC in the headphones or adapter converts those numbers into the analog signal required by the headphone drivers. The same digital link can carry microphone input, button events and device-detection information.
Android’s adapter specification describes stereo output, microphone input, device detection and headset-button event support as functions an adapter can provide. Those functions are not guaranteed merely because two plugs fit together. A low-cost passive accessory may have no DAC and therefore produce no sound on a phone that expects digital conversion.

USB-C headphones place this conversion hardware in the headset. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter places it in the adapter and exposes an analog socket. In both cases, the phone is communicating digitally over USB; neither creates an internal analog jack.

Step-by-step: verify a USB-C headphone or adapter before buying
- Record the exact phone identity. Open Settings and find About phone, then note the model name, model number and Android version. Regional variants can use different hardware even when their marketing names match.
- Check the manufacturer’s audio guidance. Look specifically for USB audio, digital-to-analog adapter or DAC requirements. Do not infer support from the shape of the USB-C receptacle.
- Decide whether you need a DAC. For a 3.5 mm headset, select an adapter explicitly described as digital audio with a built-in DAC. Android’s documented rule allows digital-to-analog adapters; a passive analog-only adapter is not a safe assumption.
- List the features your headset needs. If you use calls, require microphone input. If you use play/pause or volume buttons, require headset-button event support. If you need charging, require USB-C power passthrough and check its stated charging limits.
- Test before discarding packaging. Connect the adapter or USB-C headset, unlock the phone and play audio. Check left and right channels, volume control, microphone recording, call audio and any inline buttons. Then connect a charger if passthrough is part of the design.
- Inspect for port strain. A rigid adapter hanging from the bottom of the phone can stress the USB-C receptacle. Use a short, flexible design and avoid bending the connector while the phone is in a pocket.
Troubleshooting USB-C audio that does not work
No sound at all
- Confirm the phone has selected the USB audio device rather than its speaker or a previously paired Bluetooth device.
- Disconnect and reconnect the accessory with the phone unlocked, then test another audio app.
- Check whether the accessory is a passive adapter. If it lacks a DAC and the phone requires digital conversion, it cannot produce analog headphone output.
- Remove lint from the USB-C port using the manufacturer’s approved cleaning method; do not insert metal tools or liquid.
Sound works, but the microphone or buttons do not
Output compatibility does not guarantee input and control compatibility. Verify that the adapter advertises microphone and headset-button support. Test with a recorder and a call, because some apps handle USB microphones differently. If the phone detects only stereo output, the adapter may omit the required input contacts or event handling.
The phone repeatedly connects and disconnects
- Try the accessory without a case that may prevent the plug from seating fully.
- Test another known-good USB-C cable or adapter to separate a port problem from an accessory problem.
- Stop charging through a combined adapter and test audio alone. Faulty power negotiation or an overloaded passthrough circuit can cause resets.
- Install the phone’s current stable system update, then retest. Do not assume an update can add hardware support that the model lacks.
Charging is slow or unavailable through an audio adapter
Audio passthrough is not the same as full-speed charging support. Check the adapter’s power specification and the charger’s protocol. If the adapter does not state a charging rate, treat its passthrough capability as unverified. For reliable charging while listening, Bluetooth avoids sharing the USB-C port altogether.
Why an internal retrofit is difficult
The connector must fit both electrically and mechanically
A 3.5 mm jack needs physical clearance, mounting support and an opening in the enclosure. Its contacts must be routed to an audio codec or another circuit that can provide analog output. A phone designed without that jack may have no unused traces, no software path and no safe location for the connector.
Water and dust resistance can be lost
Opening or cutting a sealed handset can compromise gaskets, adhesives and acoustic membranes. Even if audio works, the modified phone may no longer have its original ingress protection. A repair provider should explain this risk before accepting the job.

Software may not recognize the new hardware
The operating system expects a particular audio topology. Adding a jack may require a detection switch, codec routing and firmware changes. Without those, the phone could continue routing audio to USB, Bluetooth or its speaker, or fail to detect headset insertion.
Safety and serviceability matter
Battery cells, antennas, display cables and high-density board layers occupy the same cramped interior. Drilling, soldering or rerouting near them can cause a short circuit, heat damage or permanent loss of cellular, Wi-Fi or charging functions. A failed modification can cost more than replacing the phone with a model that includes a jack from the factory.
What the available semiconductor modules do—and do not do
Audio modules from semiconductor suppliers such as Tempo Semiconductor are designed for original-equipment manufacturers converting headset designs to USB-C. They are components for a product’s electronics design, not a consumer kit for installing a jack in an existing phone. They do not provide a documented, drop-in procedure for a particular handset.
Likewise, a generic breakout board, replacement socket or USB-C receptacle cannot be assumed to solve the problem. The board would still need compatible power, digital-audio routing, analog amplification, mechanical mounting and operating-system support.
When replacing the phone is the rational answer
If a built-in 3.5 mm socket is essential, compare the cost and risk of professional modification with buying a phone designed with that connector. A factory implementation has the correct board routing, enclosure opening, detection circuitry and software support. It also preserves the manufacturer’s intended service procedures and any stated water-resistance rating.

Do not make the decision from the connector shape alone. Confirm that the candidate phone has a 3.5 mm port, supports the headset’s microphone and controls, and is sold in the correct regional version. A phone listing that mentions USB-C audio or “headphone support” may still refer only to USB-C headphones or an adapter.
Questions to ask a repair professional
- Has this exact model and regional variant been modified successfully before?
- Where would the jack be mounted, and would the case require cutting?
- Which codec, traces or board test points would carry the analog signal?
- Would headset detection, microphone input and inline buttons work?
- Would water and dust resistance, wireless performance or warranty coverage be lost?
- What happens if the modification fails, and is the work reversible?
- What is the total price compared with a replacement phone that includes a factory jack?
A professional who cannot answer these model-specific questions should not be given an expensive handset for experimentation.
Common misconceptions
“USB-C is universal, so any USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable should work.”
USB-C describes the connector family, not a guaranteed analog-audio mode. Digital audio, DAC conversion, microphone support and button handling depend on the phone and accessory implementation.

“A passive adapter is thinner, so it is better.”
Thinness does not indicate compatibility. A passive adapter may work only with a phone that exposes an analog mode on USB-C, while Android’s documented adapter guidance requires digital-to-analog conversion. Choose based on the required electronics, not the housing size.
“A USB-C headphone set adds a 3.5 mm port indirectly.”
It adds no analog receptacle. The headphones remain USB-C equipment, and another 3.5 mm headset cannot plug into the phone through them.
“An OEM USB-C audio chip is a retrofit kit.”
OEM modules are building blocks for new hardware designs. They do not establish that a consumer can install a jack in a finished phone, and the reviewed material provides no universal phone-repair instructions.
A practical decision tree
- Do you need to use an existing 3.5 mm headset? If no, choose USB-C headphones or Bluetooth according to whether you prefer a wired connection or an unused USB-C port.
- If yes, can you tolerate an external attachment? If yes, use a compatible digital USB-C audio adapter. Add charging passthrough only when simultaneous charging is a real requirement.
- If no, is a built-in jack worth professional repair risk? Identify the exact model and obtain a written feasibility and cost assessment. Do not purchase a generic retrofit module based on connector compatibility alone.
- If the assessment is uncertain or expensive, use Bluetooth or USB-C headphones now, or choose a future phone that includes a factory 3.5 mm socket.
Bottom line for this exact request
You cannot generally add a 3.5 mm headphone jack to a USB-C phone with an external product while avoiding a USB-C dongle. USB-C headphones and Bluetooth remove the separate adapter but do not create a physical jack.
