Do not rebuild your League of Legends champion pool every time a patch headline says “buff” or “nerf.” Start with Riot’s current patch notes, identify which part of your role and game plan actually changed, then test a specific prediction while keeping a familiar pick as your baseline. Add or replace a champion only when repeated games reveal a real role, matchup, or draft gap.
This approach separates three things players often mix together: the patch’s direct mechanical effect, their own mastery of a champion, and what their team drafts actually need.
What changes when a patch changes your champion pool?
A patch can alter a champion’s numbers without changing whether that champion belongs in your pool. A damage ratio, cooldown, item recipe, jungle rule, rune effect, or role-system adjustment matters only through the situations in which you use it. A mid laner may experience a mage buff differently from a bot laner using the same champion. A jungler can lose value even when their kit is untouched if a pet, camp, or objective rule changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- A practiced alternative: a champion that covers a different matchup, damage profile, range, engage pattern, or lane assignment.
- An optional situational pick: only a champion you have practiced enough to use for a clearly identified draft need.
This is a practical decision framework, not an official Riot recommendation or a universal optimal pool size. Riot’s published balance material does not establish how many champions an individual should maintain.
First, identify the live patch and your actual queue
Open Riot’s Patch Notes archive before interpreting an example. At the October 13, 2026 research timestamp, the archive listed Patch 26.20 Notes, dated October 6, 2026, as its newest entry. The archive changes, and a patch can roll out at different times by region or queue, so confirm the version shown in your client and the region in which you play.
- Check the patch number and date in the client or Riot’s official archive.
- Confirm that your queue has received the same gameplay update. Special modes and testing environments can differ.
- Read the complete notes for your role rather than relying on a social-media headline.
- Record the exact values that changed before you form an opinion.
If your client is on a different version from the example you are reading, treat the example as a method demonstration, not as current advice about a specific champion.
Read Riot’s rationale and numbers together
Patch notes usually explain the problem Riot is trying to address and then list the mechanical changes. Both parts are necessary. A number tells you what moved; the rationale tells you which game situation Riot intended to move.
Patch 26.16, dated August 11, 2026, illustrates this. Riot discussed mage presence in bot lane and changes intended to shift power between bot and mid. The same notes described jungle-pet changes meant to encourage a more diverse jungle meta, including more AP and tank junglers. A player who sees only a champion’s ability buff could miss that an item, rune, pet, or role rule changes the same champion’s practical value.
Build a change ledger
For each champion you play, write a short ledger with four columns:
| Area | What to record | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Champion kit | Base stats, ratios, costs, cooldowns, hit boxes, passive or ultimate rules | Which action in my normal pattern becomes stronger or weaker? |
| Items and runes | Changes to the purchases and runes your build uses | Does my first recall, power spike, or defensive option move? |
| Role systems | Jungle pets, lane rules, objectives, experience, economy, or other system changes | Does the map change alter my champion even without a kit change? |
| Draft rules | Champion availability, swapping, pick order, or queue restrictions | Can I still secure or reveal this pick in the same way? |
Do not assume that a champion with no line in the patch notes is unaffected. System changes can alter clear speed, lane income, scaling, or team-fight timing around that champion.

Translate a patch note into one testable prediction
Before playing, write a sentence that predicts an observable result. Keep prediction and observation separate. For example: “The defensive adjustment should make my first three lane trades safer, but the lower scaling ratio may reduce my late-game damage.” That sentence gives you two things to inspect instead of a vague feeling that the champion is “better.”
Use the affected game phase
Match your prediction to Riot’s stated target and to the champion’s job:
- Lane: trade health, wave control, level-two or level-six all-ins, and recall timing.
- Jungle: first clear route, health after camps, gank timing, invade risk, and objective setup.
- Scaling: item breakpoints, experience requirements, and damage or durability in later fights.
- Team fights: access to targets, crowd-control reliability, peel, range, and cooldown cycles.
- Draft: whether the champion supplies engage, side-lane pressure, frontline durability, magic or physical damage, or a particular counter-plan.
A prediction such as “this is now the best champion” cannot be tested cleanly. A prediction about an early trade, clear, or ultimate timing can.
Review games for the changed interaction, not the final score
After each game, inspect the moments the patch was meant to affect. A win can hide a weakened lane if your team carried the map; a loss can occur while your changed interaction worked exactly as predicted.
Use a comparable review log
| Log item | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Patch and role | 26.20, ranked solo, top lane |
| Prediction | Safer first trades, weaker late-game damage |
| Observed interaction | Won two early trades; missed a damage threshold in the third fight |
| Confounding factors | Counter-matchup, unusual jungle pressure, experimental build |
| Next test | Repeat standard build and review the first ten minutes |
Keep the comparison fair. Separate games on different roles, with different builds, or against dramatically different matchups do not provide a clean answer. Do not attribute every death, missed skill shot, or surrender vote to the patch.
Allow for mastery before judging a pick
Riot’s article “Balancing New Champions,” dated July 6, 2020, describes mastery curves: a player’s effectiveness can change substantially as they learn a champion. Riot notes that an easy-to-learn champion may still gain about 4 percentage points of win rate over roughly the first 15 games, while mastery can continue beyond that and, in some cases, to 100 games or more. Those figures describe learning behavior; they are not a required number of games for your pool.
The same principle applies after a rework, major item change, or new interaction. A short losing streak may indicate unfamiliarity rather than unusability. Riot summarized its release goal this way: “We now release new champions and VGUs at what we believe to be their long-term balance state.” Players can still need time to approach that state.

Use a low-stakes learning phase
- Keep your established comfort pick available for ranked games where the result matters most.
- Try the changed or unfamiliar champion in a low-stakes mode or practice environment.
- Rehearse the exact combo, clear, wave pattern, or item timing affected by the patch.
- Move to ranked only when you can execute the champion’s basic plan without spending every decision on remembering the kit.
This avoids two opposite errors: abandoning a viable champion after a few awkward games and forcing an unpracticed pick into a high-stakes draft because a patch headline made it popular.

Judge balance by audience, not by one global number
Riot’s Champion Balance Framework, published May 30, 2019, explains that different player groups are evaluated with different signals. In some solo-queue bands, Riot uses measures such as win rate and ban rate. For elite and professional play, champion-select behavior can be more informative, and Riot says it rarely has enough elite win-rate data. The framework also discusses global aggregation.
That means a professional pick rate, a general win-rate figure, or a popularity chart is not automatically a prediction of your result in your rank and role. Riot specifically cautions against treating popularity as a reliable general power signal. As RiotRepertoir wrote: “We’re pretty wary about punishing a champion for their popularity, as some champs will naturally be played more than others, even at statistically similar power levels—Yasuo and Lee Sin are two examples or champs who’re played pretty consistently, regardless of overall performance.”
Use public statistics, when you consult them, as a prompt for a question rather than as an order to change your pool. Ask whether the statistic covers your patch, region, rank, role, sample size, and build. If those conditions do not match your games, its decision value is limited.
Compare champions by role fit and draft function
When deciding whether to add, keep, or pause a champion, score the actual options against the same criteria. A champion that is slightly stronger on paper may be a worse choice if it duplicates your existing pool or demands a long learning period.
| Criterion | What a strong match looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Role and lane fit | Works in the role and queue you actually play | Only viable in a role you rarely queue |
| Comfort and mastery | You know the basic patterns, limits, and common mistakes | You are learning the kit and the patch interaction simultaneously |
| Patch relevance | The exact change affects your normal plan in your role | The change belongs to another role or a rare build |
| Draft contribution | Fills a distinct damage, engage, range, frontline, or matchup need | Duplicates another pick without adding flexibility |
| Evidence quality | Repeated comparable games support the conclusion | One headline, one game, or popularity alone |
Keep a champion when it remains a practiced answer to a problem you regularly face, even if another champion has a better general statistic. Pause a champion when you cannot explain its role in your pool or when repeated comparable games show that its changed plan no longer fits your execution or drafts.
Make changes only when a clear gap appears
A pool change is justified when at least one of these gaps is real:

- Your primary pick is consistently removed, banned, or made unavailable by the current draft rules.
- Your pool lacks a necessary damage type, engage tool, frontline option, or side-lane plan.
- A system change invalidates the timing or resource pattern your champion depends on.
- A matchup you frequently face now demands a practiced alternative.
- Your review log repeatedly shows the same failed interaction under comparable conditions.
If none of these is present, keep playing the familiar pick and continue collecting evidence. Constantly replacing champions creates a new learning cost without solving a demonstrated problem.
Use champion and pick-order swaps when they are available
Patch 26.17, dated August 25, 2026, documented champion swapping and pick-order swapping during champion select. These features can change how you preserve a champion’s role in a draft: a teammate may select first and exchange the champion later, or the order may be rearranged to protect a pick. Availability can depend on the current queue, region, and client version, so verify the controls in your own champion-select screen.

Draft checklist
- Agree with teammates on the desired champion and who can select it safely.
- Confirm that both players own and can select the relevant champions.
- Use the in-client swap controls only after checking that the exchange is available.
- Keep a practiced fallback in case the swap is unavailable, interrupted, or blocked by the draft.
Swapping expands access to a draft option; it does not make an unpracticed champion ready for ranked play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate mechanical strength from your execution
When a champion feels worse after a patch, identify which layer changed:
- Mechanical layer: the patch changed damage, durability, cooldowns, costs, range, or rules.
- Strategic layer: the best trade, route, build, or team-fight target changed.
- Execution layer: you have not yet learned the new timing or threshold.
- Draft layer: the champion still works, but your team composition or matchup no longer supports it.
These layers require different responses. A mechanical nerf may call for a new power-spike expectation. A strategic change may require a different first item or route. An execution problem calls for practice. A draft problem calls for an alternative champion, not necessarily abandonment of the original.
A repeatable patch-day workflow
- Verify the live version. Match the client, region, and queue to the patch notes.
- Filter the notes. Mark changes to your champions, items, runes, role systems, objectives, and draft rules.
- Read the rationale. Identify the lane, clear, scaling, team-fight, or draft problem Riot intended to address.
- Write one prediction. State what should improve and what could worsen in your normal game plan.
- Keep a baseline. Play your familiar comfort pick so your decision is not based entirely on a new champion’s learning curve.
- Test the interaction. Use low-stakes games or practice for unfamiliar mechanics, then review comparable matches.
- Record confounders. Note matchup, build, role assignment, teammate swaps, and unusual map events.
- Check for a real gap. Change the pool only if repeated evidence or draft requirements reveal one.
- Revisit later. Compare your notes after more games and after any additional patch, rather than reacting to one session.
This workflow intentionally does not produce a universal tier list. It produces a decision that is specific to your role, mastery, queue, and draft needs.

Treating popularity as proof
Popular champions can be played by specialists, blind-picked for utility, or selected for reasons unrelated to raw power. Popularity alone cannot establish that the champion belongs in your pool.
Confusing a learning curve with a nerf
An unfamiliar champion or rework can lose games while you learn it. Review whether you failed to execute the new plan before declaring the champion weak.
Testing too many variables
Changing champion, role, runes, items, and playstyle simultaneously makes the result impossible to interpret. Change the variable connected to the patch and keep the rest as stable as practical.

A jungle pet, item, rune, or objective adjustment can change a champion’s value without changing its ability text. Include the whole role system in your ledger.
Forcing an unpracticed counter
A theoretical counter that you cannot execute is not a dependable pool option. Keep the original comfort pick until the alternative has a repeatable plan.
How to know when to stop testing
Stop expanding the pool when the new pick has answered the identified gap, you can execute its core pattern consistently, and further games are no longer changing the decision. Stop defending a pick when repeated comparable games show that its role, timing, or draft contribution no longer fits your needs and another practiced option covers the same job better.
There is no Riot-published game count that determines either decision. Your evidence should be sufficient to distinguish a patch effect from ordinary variance and from your own learning process.
