Keep the campaign’s core promise, audience, substantiated proof, and next action consistent. Rebuild the hook, framing, pacing, text, sound, and call to action for each placement: TikTok and Instagram Reels need vertical, mobile-first video, while Google Search responsive ads need short text assets that make sense individually and in different combinations. “Search results” can also mean video ads in YouTube Search, which require video creative rather than search-ad headlines.

What should stay the same—and what should change?

Think of the storyline as the campaign’s argument, not a finished video to resize. Its argument can travel across placements: a particular audience has a problem, the advertised product or service addresses it, evidence supports the promise, and the viewer has a clear next step. The execution should change because people encounter each placement in a different context.

  • Keep: the factual benefit, intended audience, proof you can substantiate, offer, and destination or next action.
  • Adapt: the opening, visual composition, crop, pacing, text, use of sound, and wording or placement of the call to action.
  • Check: that the landing page supports the ad’s claims and describes the promoted product or service consistently. TikTok’s advertising policy explicitly requires that consistency for ad content, including captions, text, images, video, and CTA; check the current policy’s market and format scope before launch.

A useful test is whether a viewer can understand the same basic promise in three different ways: by watching a short vertical video, by seeing independently assembled search-ad text, or by encountering a video in YouTube Search. If the promise only works when every shot and line appears in one fixed sequence, it is not yet a flexible campaign idea.

Start with a message map, not a crop

Before editing, write the campaign’s essential claims in plain language. This keeps format changes from quietly changing what the ad promises. The map can fit on one page and should be specific enough that a video editor and a search-ad writer can both use it.

Message element Question to answer Example for a fictional service
Audience Who is this for? People who need to organize appointment requests
Problem What situation or friction does the audience recognize? Requests arrive through several channels and are easy to miss
Promise What product benefit can the advertiser actually support? One place to view incoming requests
Proof What evidence can be shown or stated accurately? A real product screen showing the request list
Action What should a qualified viewer do next? See how the workflow works

The example is a message-map illustration, not a claim about a real product. Replace it with the actual landing-page-supported benefit and proof. Do not add a statistic, customer result, feature, deadline, or offer simply because a format seems to need a stronger hook.

Then separate the core argument from its delivery. A vertical video can demonstrate the proof in a few shots; a search ad cannot rely on those shots, so it needs a concise, self-contained text version of the benefit and next step. A YouTube Search video can use the same evidence as the TikTok and Reels edits, but it remains a video asset, not a Google Search text ad.

How to adapt the video for TikTok

TikTok for Business describes the environment as “fast, sound-on, mobile-first.” That is a useful creative brief: show why the viewer should keep watching early, compose for a phone screen, and make the audio intentional. TikTok’s small-business guide suggests structures such as problem → solution → benefit and tease → reveal → CTA. Treat them as story patterns to try, not guaranteed performance formulas.

Build the opening around the viewer’s problem

Open with a recognizable situation, demonstration, or question that leads directly into the campaign promise. Avoid spending the opening on a logo animation or broad setup if it delays the information that makes the ad relevant. The hook can change between placements while the underlying claim remains fixed.

For the fictional appointment-request service, a TikTok opening might show several incoming request notifications, followed by a product screen that gathers them in one view. That opening visualizes the problem and proof; it does not justify claiming that requests will never be missed unless the advertiser can substantiate that outcome.

Compose for a vertical screen and its interface

Keep the main action and essential text in the area that remains visible when TikTok interface elements appear. There is no single safe-zone measurement that applies to every TikTok ad: TikTok says the safe-zone size can vary with aspect ratio, caption length, and interactive add-ons. Use the applicable safe-zone template in Ads Manager for the ad you are building, and check the preview with the intended caption and add-ons. Do not assume a horizontal master video can be cropped into a legible vertical ad; reframe the subject or make a separate composition when needed.

Use sound and captions deliberately

For the formats covered by its cited ad policy, TikTok lists audio as required and says audio must not be poor quality. Choose sound that supports the idea, make spoken words intelligible, and add captions when dialogue carries information a viewer needs. Captions should be readable and placed clear of both the subject and interface overlays. TikTok’s small-business guide recommends captions as part of mobile-first creative; captions do not replace the policy’s audio requirement for the relevant formats.

Check the ad product’s specifications before export

TikTok’s ad policy lists vertical 9:16, square 1:1, and horizontal 16:9 formats, with a 5-to-60-second duration, for its specified scope. Those figures are not a universal recipe for every TikTok product. For example, TikTok’s reservation in-feed specification, last updated July 2025, recommends vertical 9:16 at a minimum of 540 × 960 pixels and a duration of 9–15 seconds for non-Spark and Spark Ads Push. That is a product-specific recommendation, not a rule to apply to every TikTok campaign. Confirm the current format, duration, audio, and safe-zone requirements for the exact market and ad product in Ads Manager and the applicable specification page.

How to adapt the video for Instagram Reels

Meta’s Reels guidance recommends vertical 9:16 video with audio and key messages inside the safe zone. Make the version feel native to a vertical feed: give the opening its own visual reason to watch, keep essential proof visible, and avoid placing important text where Reels controls or other interface elements may cover it.

Reels can share footage with a TikTok edit, but do not treat one export as automatically finished for both. Review the framing, captions, key-message placement, and ending in the actual Reels preview. If an overlay obscures a product demonstration or qualification, reposition the shot or text rather than shrinking everything until it is hard to read.

Meta says advertisers can use placement asset customization and test Reels-specific creative through A/B testing. Those options make it possible to provide a version tailored to Reels rather than relying on a broad campaign asset to fit every placement. A test should change a defined creative choice—such as the opening or proof shot—while keeping the offer and audience context clear enough to interpret the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Meta also reports that 79% of surveyed people say they purchased a product or service after watching Reels. Separately, Meta reports 2X higher delivery to the Reels placement for campaigns that included 9:16 video ads with audio and key messages in safe zones, and 34.5% lower cost per result compared with image ads for campaigns using those video characteristics. Meta attributes the latter comparison to a statistical global meta-analysis of 15 Reels-only split tests. The consulted Reels page does not state a publication year for these figures. They describe Meta-reported research contexts, not a forecast for a new campaign or a guarantee that a particular edit will achieve the same outcome.

How to turn the storyline into Google Search text ads

A Google Search responsive search ad (RSA) is not a video cutdown. It is a set of text assets that Google can match and combine for search queries. Google’s guidance allows advertisers to provide at least 3 and up to 15 headlines, and at least 2 and up to 4 descriptions. Each headline can contain up to 30 characters and each description up to 90 characters. Assets can appear in different orders, so each should make sense on its own and in plausible combinations.

Write from the query to the promise

Start with the likely search language and the landing-page-supported benefit. A person searching for a particular product, service, or task may need a more direct answer than someone who discovers a short-form video in a feed. Use query-relevant wording where it accurately describes the offer, then make the next step clear. Do not assume the video’s opening or visuals will supply information that is absent from the text ad.

For the fictional appointment-request service, possible RSA assets might include the following. Character counts include spaces and punctuation; these examples illustrate asset independence, not a recommendation for a real campaign.

Asset Example Characters
Headline Organize Appointment Requests 29 of 30
Headline View Requests in One Place 26 of 30
Headline See How the Workflow Works 27 of 30
Description See a clearer way to review incoming appointment requests. Explore the workflow. 79 of 90
Description Learn how the service organizes requests and decide whether it fits your process. 79 of 90

These lines avoid a hard-to-substantiate outcome such as “never miss a request.” They also avoid relying on one headline to complete another: “Organize Appointment Requests” and “See How the Workflow Works” each communicate a recognizable idea when shown alone. Review every possible asset in the context of the actual landing page and query themes before using it.

Make combinations coherent; pin only when necessary

Because Google can show assets in different orders, avoid writing a headline that only works as the second half of a sentence, or a description that depends on a particular headline to explain what is being offered. Read the assets alone, then read likely pairings in both orders. Google advises that assets should make sense individually or in combinations and should not violate its policies or local law. Pin an asset only when it must occupy a specific position; pinning limits the combinations available to the system.

Google reports that advertisers who improve RSA Ad Strength from Poor to Excellent find 15% more clicks and conversions on average. This is a Google-reported average, not independent evidence or a guarantee that improving Ad Strength alone causes a specific campaign result. Use Ad Strength as a prompt to improve asset coverage and variety, not as a substitute for accurate claims, relevant queries, and a useful landing page.

What if “search results” means YouTube Search?

YouTube Search video ads and Google Search RSAs are different placements with different creative assets. A Google Search RSA uses text headlines and descriptions. YouTube Search is a video placement described in Google’s video campaign guidance, so the campaign needs video creative. The same storyline can guide both, but converting a video into RSA text is not the same task as preparing video for YouTube Search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s video specification page lists horizontal 16:9, vertical 9:16, and square 1:1 assets for specified campaign types. Google’s Video action documentation describes ads appearing across YouTube video, YouTube Search, Watch Next, Home feed, Shorts, and Google video partners. It also says Video action campaigns were upgraded to Demand Gen as of May 2026. Google cautions that campaigns may not serve in some YouTube in-feed environments when they have only vertical assets. If the campaign needs broad video inventory, prepare useful aspect ratios rather than assuming a single vertical export covers every surface. Check the current campaign type and format documentation: campaign names, inventory, and requirements can change.

A practical adaptation workflow

  1. Write the fixed message. Record the target audience, problem, factual promise, substantiated proof, offer, and next action. Check each claim against the landing page.
  2. Choose the placement and campaign product. Decide whether the destination is TikTok video, Reels video, a Google Search RSA, YouTube Search video, or a broader video campaign. Do not treat “search” as a single format.
  3. Build a placement-specific opening. For each video, choose a first shot or line that earns attention in that context. For an RSA, use query-relevant assets that state a benefit or action without needing a visual hook.
  4. Recompose the evidence. Pick a product demonstration, screen, or other proof that fits the aspect ratio and stays legible. Create a separate crop or shot composition where a simple resize would cut off the important detail.
  5. Adapt pacing, text, and sound. Give short-form video a clear progression from problem to proof to action. Add readable captions where dialogue matters, keep text clear of overlays, and meet the applicable audio requirement. For text ads, make every headline and description independently understandable.
  6. Write a placement-appropriate CTA. Keep the requested action consistent with the offer, but make the wording and ending fit the viewer’s context. Ensure the destination page delivers what the ad says it will.
  7. Preview and validate. Check each creative in the placement preview, verify safe zones and character limits, and confirm the current specifications for the campaign product and market before publishing.
  8. Test one meaningful difference at a time. Compare a deliberate variation—such as the opening or proof shot—rather than changing the promise, offer, and creative all at once. Interpret results in the context of the campaign rather than treating platform averages as predictions.

Common adaptation mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using one horizontal master crop everywhere: reframe for vertical video and inspect the actual placement preview. A crop that keeps the subject but removes the proof is not a successful adaptation.
  • Putting important text beneath interface elements: reposition the message inside the applicable safe zone and check with the intended caption and interactive elements enabled.
  • Assuming captions make audio optional: for TikTok formats in the cited policy scope, audio is required and poor-quality sound is not acceptable. Keep speech clear and captions readable.
  • Carrying the same opening across every platform by default: keep the campaign promise, but make the first shot, line, or text asset fit the way the placement is consumed.
  • Writing RSA fragments that only work in one order: read each asset on its own and alongside other likely assets. Rewrite dependent fragments; pin only if a particular position is essential.
  • Promising more than the landing page supports: remove or qualify claims that the destination cannot substantiate. TikTok explicitly requires consistency between ad content and the promoted product or service on the landing page; check the applicable policies for every platform.
  • Exporting one video ratio for every video surface: confirm the campaign’s intended inventory. Google warns that some YouTube in-feed environments may not serve campaigns that have only vertical assets.
  • Treating platform statistics as a result forecast: Meta’s and Google’s reported averages describe their stated contexts; they do not establish what a particular campaign will deliver.

Placement comparison at a glance

Placement Creative asset What to adapt Key check
TikTok Short-form video Opening, vertical composition, pacing, captions, sound, CTA Applicable ad product’s duration, ratio, audio, and Ads Manager safe zone
Instagram Reels Short-form video Reels-specific opening, 9:16 framing, proof and text placement, sound, CTA Meta’s safe-zone guidance and placement preview
Google Search RSA Text headlines and descriptions Query language, self-contained assets, coherent combinations, CTA 3–15 headlines, 2–4 descriptions, 30-character headline and 90-character description limits
YouTube Search video Video ad Video opening, aspect ratio, pacing, text, sound, CTA Current video campaign type and format specifications; RSA text assets do not substitute for video
