You can activate Windows 10 from an elevated Command Prompt with Microsoft’s slmgr.vbs licensing tool. You need a genuine Windows 10 product key, a digital license, or access to an organization’s authorized volume-activation service. CMD cannot generate a license or bypass activation.
The basic process is:
- Check the installed Windows edition.
- Install your valid product key with
/ipk. - Activate online with
/ato. - Confirm the result with
/xpror Windows Settings.
Before you start
Make sure the license matches the edition installed on the PC. For example, a Windows 10 Pro key will not normally activate Windows 10 Home, and an Enterprise or Education key is not interchangeable with a Pro key.
You need one of these:
- A valid 25-character Windows 10 product key.
- A digital license already associated with the device, preferably linked to your Microsoft account.
- Access to an organization’s authorized activation system, such as KMS or a MAK-based deployment.
If you do not have a valid license, the commands below will not legitimately activate Windows.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
The commands may fail or return an access-related error if Command Prompt is not elevated.

Check the installed Windows 10 edition
For a quick graphical check, run:
winverTo query the installed edition from the administrator Command Prompt, run:
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEditionLook for the Current Edition value. Do not install a key until you have confirmed that it corresponds to your license.
Activate Windows 10 with a product key
1. Install the product key
Replace the sample value with the 25-character key you own:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXThe /ipk option installs or replaces the currently installed product key. A successful key installation does not necessarily mean that Windows is activated; it only means that Windows accepted the key for installation.
2. Activate online
Run:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /atoThe /ato option tells Windows to attempt online activation using the installed key. The PC must be connected to the internet, and Microsoft’s activation service must be reachable.
3. Restart if necessary
If Windows reports a licensing-service problem after changing the key, restart the computer and run the activation command again. You can also restart the Software Protection service from an elevated Command Prompt:

net start sppsvcDo not interrupt the service if Windows is in the middle of an activation operation. A full restart is usually the simpler option.
Verify Windows 10 activation from CMD
Use these commands to inspect the license state:

Use the full command form if preferred:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /dli
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /dlv
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /xprFor a normal retail or digital-license installation, /xpr should report that Windows is permanently activated. Volume-licensed installations may show an expiration date because they must periodically renew with the organization’s activation infrastructure.

Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation
Activate Windows 10 with a digital license
A digital license does not require you to enter a product key. Connect the PC to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license. If the same edition of Windows 10 was previously activated on that device, activation will often occur automatically.
After a motherboard replacement or another significant hardware change, open:
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot

Sign in when prompted. If the troubleshooter displays an option such as I changed hardware on this device recently, select it and follow the reactivation steps.

A digital license for Windows 10 Home does not grant Windows 10 Pro activation. The installed edition and the digital entitlement must match.
Windows 10 Home versus Pro
A Pro product key cannot simply turn an installed Home edition into an activated Pro installation through /ato. If the PC has a valid Pro entitlement but Windows 10 Home is installed, use the Activation page to change the edition or reinstall the correct edition when instructed by Microsoft’s activation tools.
Likewise, do not use an Enterprise, Education, or Pro for Workstations key unless the computer is licensed for that edition. Edition mismatches commonly produce errors such as 0xC004F210 or 0xC004F034.

Activation on an organization-managed PC
Company-owned Windows 10 installations may use volume activation rather than a retail key. The organization must provide the licensing infrastructure; copying a KMS command from the internet is not a legitimate activation method.
For an authorized KMS client, an administrator may install the Windows 10 Pro KMS client setup key and activate it as follows:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ipk W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /atoThis key is a publicly documented KMS client key, not a retail license. It works only when the PC can contact the organization’s properly licensed KMS host. It will not activate a retail Windows installation through Microsoft’s public activation servers.

KMS discovery normally uses the organization’s DNS record _vlmcs._tcp. If the administrator gives you a specific KMS host, it can be configured with:

cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /atoReplace kms.example.com with the real internal host. KMS normally uses TCP port 1688. To remove a manually configured host and return to automatic discovery, run:
cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ckmsKMS activation is renewable rather than permanently independent of the organization. A laptop that stays away from the company network can eventually report that its license will expire.

Commands that do not activate Windows
slmgr /rearm does not permanently activate Windows. It resets an allowed licensing grace-period state; it is not a replacement for a product key, digital license, MAK, or authorized KMS service.
Similarly, installing a KMS client key with /ipk is not proof of activation. Always run /ato and then verify with /xpr or the Activation page.

Can I activate Windows 10 permanently using CMD?
Yes, if you have a valid Windows 10 license. Install the matching product key with slmgr.vbs /ipk, run slmgr.vbs /ato, and verify the result with slmgr.vbs /xpr. CMD cannot permanently activate an unlicensed copy.

What is the CMD command to activate Windows 10?
From an administrator Command Prompt, use cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /ato. This activates the key that is already installed; it does not supply a license by itself.
Why does /ipk work but Windows remain unactivated?
/ipk only installs the product key. Run /ato afterward, then check the error message and confirm that the key matches the installed edition and has not exceeded its usage limit.
Can a Windows 10 Home key activate Windows 10 Pro?
No. The key and installed edition must match. A Home license does not provide Pro activation.
Is the Windows 10 KMS key a free activation key?
No. A KMS client key is intended for computers covered by an organization’s volume license. It requires the organization’s KMS host and does not activate a retail installation through Microsoft’s public servers.
How do I check whether Windows 10 is activated?
Run cscript.exe %windir%system32slmgr.vbs /xpr. You can also open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
