To use F5’s standard function, focus the window you want to act on and press F5. On Windows, that normally refreshes the active window. If your laptop instead changes a hardware setting—or does nothing—try Fn + F5 and check the keyboard’s function-key mode. On a Mac, hold Fn or Globe while pressing F5, or set the top row to use standard function keys by default.
Use F5 on Windows
- Click the app or window you want to refresh so it has focus.
- Press F5 once. Microsoft lists F5 as refreshing the active window, including in File Explorer. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference notes that the focused window is the target; individual apps may handle function keys differently.
- If F5 triggers a hardware feature instead, try Fn + F5. If that produces the refresh action, look for an Fn Lock, F Lock, or manufacturer hotkey setting to change which top-row command is the default.
Use standard F5 on a Mac
Apple keyboards can use the top row for built-in Mac features or as standard function keys. To send standard F5 for one keypress, hold Fn or Globe and press F5.
To make standard function keys the default on macOS Ventura or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys, then enable Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys. On earlier macOS versions, Apple gives the path as System Preferences > Keyboard, where you select the same option. See Apple’s instructions for using function keys on Mac. The function key’s effect still depends on the app in use.

The top row may be in a mode where its printed hardware icons take priority. Try Fn + F5 once. If that gives you the standard F5 action, the key itself is likely working and the difference is the keyboard’s mode.

Some keyboards provide a toggle for this behavior. Microsoft explains that its keyboards with an F Lock key can switch between standard and alternate commands: on those models, the F Lock light being on indicates standard F1–F12 commands, and off indicates alternate commands. This light convention applies to the described Microsoft keyboard designs; it is not universal. Microsoft’s guidance on Fn and F Lock explains the distinction.
Laptop makers may also configure the default in firmware or a utility. For example, Lenovo’s E41-50 documentation describes a UEFI hotkey mode that affects whether a hotkey is used directly or together with Fn. That example does not establish the setting or its name for other models; consult the manual for your exact computer. Lenovo E41-50 documentation.

Troubleshoot F5 if it does nothing or behaves unexpectedly
- It refreshes the wrong window: click the intended window first. F5’s Windows refresh shortcut targets the active window, and an application may assign its own action to F5.
- It changes a hardware setting: try Fn + F5, then check for an Fn Lock or F Lock key, a keyboard utility, or a model-specific hotkey setting.
- You are using a Mac and get a built-in feature: hold Fn or Globe while pressing F5, or change the function-key preference in Keyboard settings.
- You are using a non-Apple keyboard with a Mac: the standard-function-key preference may not appear. Apple advises checking the keyboard maker’s utility or documentation.
- Neither F5 nor Fn + F5 works: confirm the intended app has focus and check its shortcut behavior. Then use the computer or keyboard’s exact model number to find its instructions; the correct mode and key combination vary by device.
Why the F5 combination varies
F5 is a standard function-key label, but a keyboard can also assign a top-row key a secondary hardware action. Whether F5 or Fn + F5 sends the standard function depends on the keyboard’s default mode and its available toggles. The operating system and the focused app also matter: the same standard F5 input can have different results in different applications.
For that reason, there is no universal Fn-lock switch or BIOS path. Identify the keyboard or laptop model and follow its documentation if the basic key combination does not resolve the issue.
