To call for help on most iPhones, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the Emergency SOS countdown ends, then release. You can also enable a five-press shortcut, prepare Medical ID and emergency contacts, and—on supported iPhones in supported regions—use satellite emergency texting when ordinary coverage is unavailable.

How do you activate Emergency SOS manually?

On most iPhones, press and hold the side button and either volume button. When the Emergency SOS sliders appear, keep holding until the countdown finishes and the call begins. The exact screen and available options can vary by iOS version and region. Apple’s current instructions are in its Emergency SOS guide.

There are two settings-based alternatives:

  • Call with Hold and Release: In Settings > Emergency SOS, you can turn on this option to place a call by holding the side and a volume button until the countdown begins, then releasing the buttons.
  • Call with 5 Presses: In Settings > Emergency SOS, enable this option, then rapidly press the side button five times to start a countdown.

India uses a different default sequence: quickly press the side button three times. If Accessibility Shortcut is enabled, use the side-and-volume-button sequence instead. Check the settings on your own phone rather than assuming every region uses the same trigger.

If the iPhone is locked

From the passcode screen, tap Emergency, then enter the local emergency number. Do not assume a particular number works everywhere; use the number for your location. Texting emergency services is available only in some countries and regions.

If you triggered a call by mistake

If an emergency call has connected and you do not need help, do not hang up. Wait for a responder and explain what happened. This helps avoid leaving an unanswered call that may prompt a response.

What should you set up before an emergency?

Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app while you have time and a working connection. Emergency SOS can make Medical ID information available to responders and notify the contacts you choose.

  1. Open the Health app and set up your Medical ID.
  2. Add the people you want notified as emergency contacts.
  3. Review the details periodically so medical information and contact numbers remain current.

After an Emergency SOS call, the iPhone can text your emergency contacts unless you cancel the alert. It shares your current location if available, and can send location-change updates for a limited period after SOS mode starts. Location sharing depends on availability, so contacts should not treat the phone’s location as guaranteed or continuously updated.

Apple’s Crash Detection guidance says the contact-alert behavior relies on Messages being available and selected as the text messaging app. If you depend on those alerts, check that Messages is available on your iPhone.

Can you use Emergency SOS without cell service?

On iPhone 14 or later, Emergency SOS via satellite may let you contact emergency services when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, if the feature is supported in your country or region. First try calling emergency services normally. If the call does not go through because you have no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, follow the on-screen option for Emergency Text via Satellite and answer the emergency questionnaire. Apple’s satellite connection guide explains current requirements and availability.

For a satellite connection, you need a clear view of the sky. Heavy foliage and other obstructions can interfere with the connection. Follow the on-screen directions to point your iPhone toward a satellite; do not assume the phone will connect from every position or location.

What information can a satellite SOS session share?

The satellite text conversation can send your questionnaire answers, location (including elevation), and iPhone battery level. If Medical ID and emergency contacts are configured, their information can also be included. You can choose to share with emergency contacts the information sent to emergency services. Apple says location is shared with Apple and relay providers to route the emergency text and help responders reach you.

Emergency SOS via satellite is for contacting emergency services. It is distinct from ordinary Messages via satellite and from other satellite features, such as roadside assistance or location sharing, which are separate services.

Try the satellite demo before a remote trip

Before leaving coverage, set up Medical ID and emergency contacts and try the demo at Settings > Emergency SOS. Apple says the demo does not call emergency services. Use it to familiarize yourself with the connection flow, not as proof that a real connection will be available wherever you travel.

If you start satellite SOS accidentally

Do not end the session. Wait for a responder to answer and explain that you do not need help. Apple gives the same instruction for an accidental satellite SOS session as for an accidental emergency call.

How is Crash Detection different from manual SOS?

Emergency SOS is normally started by you; Crash Detection is a separate automatic feature on iPhone 14 or later. After a severe car crash, the phone can show an alert and, if you do not cancel it, automatically call emergency services after 20 seconds. If you are unresponsive and outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, the iPhone will attempt Emergency SOS via satellite where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Crash Detection cannot detect every car crash, according to Apple. Treat it as a possible automatic response, not a guarantee or a replacement for calling emergency services yourself when you can. It also does not override an emergency call already placed by another method. See Apple’s Safety Features information for its Crash Detection guidance.

Which iPhone SOS option fits the situation?

Option How it starts Connectivity and availability
Manual Emergency SOS Hold the side button and either volume button until the countdown ends; alternatively, enable Call with 5 Presses in Settings > Emergency SOS. Places an emergency call using the options available where you are. Emergency-service texting is available only in some regions.
Emergency SOS via satellite Try an emergency call first; if it fails without cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, follow the Emergency Text via Satellite prompt. iPhone 14 or later, subject to country or region support and a usable view of the sky.
Crash Detection After a detected severe car crash, an alert appears; if not canceled, the phone calls emergency services after 20 seconds. iPhone 14 or later. Satellite fallback may be attempted if you are unresponsive and out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, where available. It cannot detect every crash.

These are not interchangeable routes in every location. Your iPhone model, region, connectivity, and—when using satellite—view of the sky affect what is possible. Check Settings and Apple’s current availability information before relying on a feature for a trip.
