To access a WordPress database, sign in to your hosting control panel, open its phpMyAdmin link, identify the database named by DB_NAME in wp-config.php, and select that database in phpMyAdmin. Export it before changing any rows or running SQL. The database contains WordPress content and settings, but it is only one part of a complete site backup.
What you need before opening phpMyAdmin
Have administrator access to the hosting panel and file access (File Manager or SFTP) to the WordPress installation. You also need to know which site you are working on if the account contains several installations. phpMyAdmin is a third-party database administration tool; it is not the WordPress dashboard and it does not replace your host’s database-management tools.
- Hosting-panel login: the panel is where your host exposes phpMyAdmin and creates databases and users.
- File access: you will read connection settings from
wp-config.php. - A backup location: keep the SQL export outside the public web root and retain more than one copy.
- A specific goal: browsing tables is relatively low risk; editing users, URLs, serialized options, or permissions can take the site offline if done incorrectly.
Open phpMyAdmin from your hosting control panel
cPanel
- Sign in to cPanel.
- Open Home » Databases » phpMyAdmin.
- phpMyAdmin opens in a new page or tab. The left navigation lists databases available to your hosting account.
A host can disable phpMyAdmin, move it to a custom administrator link, or restrict it to selected accounts. If the menu is absent, ask the host whether the feature is enabled and which secure URL or panel section replaces it. Do not install an unknown copy of phpMyAdmin just to restore a missing menu.
Plesk, DirectAdmin, and other panels
Other panels expose an equivalent database link, but labels and navigation differ by host and edition. Look for a Databases, Database management, or site-specific tools page, then choose the phpMyAdmin action for the correct subscription or database. WordPress documentation lists several panel routes, while the host controls the exact location and whether access is limited to HTTPS or an administrator-only network.

Find the WordPress database name in wp-config.php
- Open the WordPress installation in File Manager or connect with SFTP.
- Locate
wp-config.phpin the installation’s document root. A common cPanel document-root layout is/home/username/public_html, although addon domains and subdirectories use different paths. - Open the file carefully and read the database constants. Do not paste the file into a public support forum or save a copy in the web root.

The database name and password in wp-config.php must match the account credentials configured by the host. If you change a database user’s password in the panel, immediately update the matching DB_PASSWORD value or WordPress can show a database-connection error. cPanel documents a command-line check as mysql -u db_user -p; run it on the server, replace db_user with the actual username, and enter the password at the prompt. A successful login confirms credentials, but it does not prove that the user has privileges on the intended database.
Select the correct database in phpMyAdmin
- In phpMyAdmin’s left sidebar, identify the database whose name exactly matches
DB_NAME. - Click that database. Its tables will appear in the sidebar and in the main panel.
- Confirm the table names use the prefix shown by
$table_prefix. The default is oftenwp_, but a security-hardening choice, migration, or hosting installer may use another prefix. - Only after these checks should you browse, export, or edit rows.
If several databases have similar names, do not choose by appearance or by the most recent timestamp. Compare the complete name character by character with DB_NAME. Opening the wrong database can lead to a valid-looking export or edit that has no effect on the site you intended to change.
Back up the database before making changes
WordPress recommends regular database backups and one before every upgrade. WordPress Developer Resources recommended keeping three to five recent backups in 2023. Store copies in separate locations so a failed edit, account problem, or damaged local disk does not eliminate every recovery point.
Export a backup in phpMyAdmin
- Select the database identified by
DB_NAME. - Open the Export tab.
- Use the quick export option when the host’s defaults are appropriate, or choose a custom export when you need to select tables, compression, or SQL options.
- Choose SQL as the format and start the export.
- Save the downloaded file with a descriptive name that includes the site and date. Keep it outside the public web root.
- Verify that the file exists and can be opened as a text or compressed SQL archive before you begin the edit. Do not alter the only copy.
Export limits are controlled by the host’s PHP and web-server settings. A large database may exceed browser upload or execution limits during a later import; ask the host for an approved command-line or staged-import method rather than repeatedly retrying a partial upload.

Know what this backup does and does not contain

A recoverable site therefore needs both database and file backups. A database export alone cannot restore a missing plugin, theme, upload, or configuration file.
Make a targeted change safely
Browse before editing
Use Browse to inspect rows and Structure to understand columns. Record the table and row you intend to change. Avoid broad “replace all” operations until you understand how the value is stored and whether a plugin has written serialized data.
Example: locate a user record
WordPress’s official password-reset procedure demonstrates the navigation pattern:
- Log in to phpMyAdmin.
- Click Databases and select the WordPress database.
- Find the users table, commonly
wp_users, but use your actual table prefix. - Choose Browse, locate the intended account, and select Edit.
- Change only the field required by the documented procedure, save the row, and test the login.
The procedure is intended for people who already have phpMyAdmin access and warns that you use the tool at your own risk. Keep the pre-edit SQL export until the site has been tested.

Handle URLs and serialized options carefully
Changing a domain or protocol can affect values in options, posts, and plugin tables. Some WordPress settings are serialized: their stored string includes character lengths, so a simple text replacement can corrupt the value. Take a fresh export before changing URLs or serialized options, use a WordPress-aware migration method where possible, and test the front end, administrator login, media, and permalinks afterward. Never run an unreviewed SQL statement against every table merely because a search result suggested it.
Use SQL only when you can explain every clause
The SQL tab can run a query against the selected database. Start with a read-only SELECT that identifies the rows, save the output, and only then consider an UPDATE or DELETE. Include a restrictive WHERE condition and check the affected-row count. If you cannot describe the expected rows and a rollback plan, stop and obtain a tested procedure from the plugin or host documentation.

Export from the source site
- Open phpMyAdmin for the source hosting account and select the database named in its
wp-config.php. - Choose Export, select SQL, and save the file.
- Keep the source site and its files unchanged until the destination has been verified.
Create the destination database and user
Use the host’s MySQL Databases, Manage My Databases, or Database Wizard interface to create the destination database, user, and permissions. cPanel explicitly warns not to create databases or users in phpMyAdmin: doing so can break the panel’s mapping for backups and restorations. Record the exact database name, username, password, and host value supplied by the panel.
Import into the destination
- Open phpMyAdmin for the destination account.
- Select the empty destination database.
- Choose Import, select the SQL file, and start the import.
- Wait for a completion message. If the upload or execution limit is exceeded, use the host’s documented large-import method instead of assuming a partial import succeeded.
- Update the destination
wp-config.phpwith the newDB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD, and, when required,DB_HOST. - If the domain or protocol changed, update the site’s URL using a migration-safe method, then test the login, front page, internal links, media, and permalinks.
Do not delete the source export or old site files until the destination works and you have a separate, verified rollback copy.

Fix common access and connection problems
phpMyAdmin is not listed
The host may have disabled it, limited it to administrators, or replaced it with another database tool. Confirm that you are in the correct account and ask the host for the supported HTTPS access path. A missing menu is not evidence that WordPress has no database.
The database named in wp-config.php is not visible
You may be in the wrong hosting account, the database may use a host-account prefix, or your panel user may lack privileges. Compare the complete DB_NAME and DB_USER values with the panel’s database list and use the panel’s database-management page to repair the user-to-database assignment.

Check all four connection values, especially after a password change. Confirm that the database user is assigned to the database with the required privileges and that DB_HOST matches the host’s instructions. The command-line check mysql -u db_user -p can separate an invalid password from a missing database privilege, but ask the host for help if shell access is unavailable.
The imported site is blank or missing content
Confirm that you imported into the intended destination database, that the import completed without an error, and that the destination wp-config.php points to it. Check the table prefix and compare table counts with the source export. A database-only migration also requires the WordPress files, theme, plugins, and uploads.

The import fails because the file is too large
Browser upload and PHP execution limits vary by host and are not a property of WordPress itself. Request the host’s approved large-database procedure, such as a staged or command-line import, and retain the original SQL file. Do not split SQL manually unless the host or the software documentation explains how to preserve statement boundaries.
Protect phpMyAdmin and its credentials
- Use HTTPS for the panel and phpMyAdmin. WordPress documents the risk of credential theft when logging in over non-secure HTTP.
- Restrict phpMyAdmin to the administrator network or a VPN when the host supports that control.
- Follow phpMyAdmin security announcements and upgrade when vulnerabilities are published.
- Use a strong, unique panel and database password; never publish
DB_PASSWORDin screenshots, tickets, or repositories. - Remove temporary SQL exports from public directories and delete them when the verified backup workflow no longer needs them.
- Do not leave an old phpMyAdmin installation exposed at a predictable URL.
These controls matter because phpMyAdmin can read and alter every table available to its account. Treat it as an administrative surface, not as a casual file viewer.

A pre-edit and post-edit checklist
Before the change
- Confirm the site and document root.
- Read
DB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD,DB_HOSTwhen present, and$table_prefix. - Select the database whose name exactly matches
DB_NAME. - Export the database and store three to five recent copies across separate locations when practical.
- Write down the intended table, row, field, and rollback action.
After the change or migration
- Check phpMyAdmin’s success message and affected-row count.
- Load the site’s front end and administrator login.
- Test a representative post, page, comment, form, image, and plugin feature relevant to the change.
- Recheck URLs and permalinks after a domain or protocol change.
- Keep the pre-change export until the site has passed testing.
Why the database name and table prefix matter
WordPress can function normally while using a database name and table prefix that differ from the defaults shown in tutorials. The authoritative values for your installation are in wp-config.php. Matching DB_NAME gets you into the right database; matching $table_prefix gets you to the right tables inside it. Treat defaults such as wp_ as examples, not as discovery methods.
Sources and documented boundaries
cPanel’s phpMyAdmin documentation, last modified July 8, 2026, describes phpMyAdmin as a third-party tool for manipulating MySQL or MariaDB databases and documents the cPanel navigation. WordPress Developer Resources strongly recommends regular backups and a backup before every upgrade. WordPress’s password-reset documentation is specifically for administrators who already have phpMyAdmin access and cautions that database edits are performed at the user’s own risk. Those boundaries explain why the safest workflow is: identify the database from the site’s configuration, export it, make the smallest justified change, and verify the site before discarding the rollback copy.
