The safest practical choices are UGREENlink or Tailscale. UGREENlink is the simplest built-in option: enable it under the NAS remote-access settings, sign in with a UGREEN Cloud account, choose an ID, and use the generated link. Tailscale creates a private network between the NAS and your approved phones or computers, using encrypted connections without publishing NAS services to the internet.

Do not confuse either approach with DDNS. DDNS normally requires router port forwarding and gives you a direct endpoint, so it is a different exposure and administration model. This guide explains which method fits, how to configure it, and what to check when remote access fails.

Choose the access method before changing your router

Your choice determines whether you need an inbound firewall rule, which accounts you must maintain, and whether access is vendor-managed or private between your own devices. UGREEN documents all three routes in its remote-access material, but only the first two match the goal of avoiding direct public exposure.

Method Public router port Accounts Connection model Setup level Compatibility notes
UGREENlink Not required for the documented link-based route UGREEN Cloud account UGREEN-managed remote access; the NAS generates a web link and client ID Lowest UGREEN’s desktop-app article applies to firmware 1.16.0.0042 or later; paths can vary by model and app version. UGREEN remote-access instructions
Tailscale Not required for the private-network design Tailscale account shared by the NAS and remote devices Private tailnet using WireGuard-based, encrypted device connections Moderate Confirm your NAS model and UGOS version. Container-based installation is not universal. UGREEN’s Tailscale setup
UGREEN P2P mode UGREEN describes it as avoiding traditional public IPv4 port forwarding Depends on the UGREEN client and account flow UGREEN relay service plus local IPv6 NAT traversal Low to moderate Connection behavior depends on the network and client. UGREEN P2P connection-mode explanation
DDNS Yes, router-side port forwarding is required according to UGREEN’s April 2026 guide DDNS provider details are not stated in the cited UGREEN material Direct access to the NAS rather than UGREEN relay servers Highest Use only if you deliberately want a direct endpoint and understand the firewall, certificate and patching work. UGREEN’s April 17, 2026 overview

If you want the fewest networking decisions, start with UGREENlink. If you want several personally controlled devices to behave as though they are on one private network, choose Tailscale. Leave DDNS for a deliberate direct-access design rather than treating it as a privacy-preserving substitute.

What “without exposing the NAS to the internet” means

A NAS is directly exposed when an unsolicited connection from the public internet can reach a service on your home network through a forwarded router port or another public endpoint. The service might be a web administration page, file-sharing protocol or remote-management interface. This article’s approach avoids telling the router to forward those services to the NAS.

Remote access still requires an authenticated path. UGREENlink uses UGREEN’s access infrastructure, while Tailscale joins your NAS and authorized clients to a virtual private network. Neither method is a guarantee that the NAS cannot be compromised: use unique credentials, keep UGOS and client software current, and grant access only to accounts and devices you recognize.

Set up UGREENlink: the simplest built-in route

UGREEN’s documented path is in the NAS control panel. The labels can differ slightly between UGOS releases and desktop-app versions, so use the current labels shown by your model rather than relying on an older screenshot. The remote-access article covers the UGREEN NAS desktop app for Windows and macOS on firmware 1.16.0.0042 or later; that threshold is specific to the described desktop-app guidance, not a blanket statement that every UGREEN client or NAS feature requires that exact version.

Before you begin

  • Confirm that the NAS can reach the internet from its normal home network.
  • Have a UGREEN Cloud account ready, or be prepared to create or verify one when prompted.
  • Update the NAS only through the supported UGOS process for your model, and record the current firmware version.
  • Choose a long, unique NAS account password. UGREEN specifically recommends a strong password for better remote-access security.
  • Do not create router port-forwarding rules for SMB, NFS, SSH or the UGOS management interface for this method.

Enable the service

  1. Sign in to the NAS administration interface.
  2. Open Control Panel > Device Connection > Remote access.
  3. Enable UGREENlink.
  4. When prompted, sign in to or verify the UGREEN Cloud account associated with the NAS.
  5. Choose a unique UGREENlink ID and select Apply.

UGREEN says the system then generates a web-access link and a client ID. Save the displayed values in a password manager or another protected location; they are connection identifiers, not substitutes for your NAS login credentials.

Connect from away from home

  1. From a remote browser or supported client, open the generated UGREENlink web address.
  2. Confirm that the page is the UGOS Pro login page and that the address is exactly the link shown by your NAS.
  3. Sign in with a NAS account that has only the permissions it needs.
  4. Test the specific file or application you need, rather than assuming that every NAS service is automatically available through the link.

If the link works on cellular data but not on your office or hotel network, the remote network may restrict the connection. Test from a second network before changing NAS settings. If it fails everywhere, return to the Remote access page and verify the account, ID and service state.

Use Tailscale for a private network across your devices

Tailscale describes its NAS design as an encrypted, peer-to-peer connection between the devices in your tailnet, allowing you to reach NAS services from anywhere without exposing those services to the internet. UGREEN describes Tailscale as WireGuard-based. This is a better fit than a single web link when you regularly use several computers, phones or tablets and want those approved devices to reach the NAS over one private network.

Read the model-specific UGREEN instructions first: Setting Up Tailscale on UGREEN NAS for Remote Access. Installation can differ by UGOS release. UGREEN’s instructions mention Docker Compose for deployments involving containers on UGOS Pro; that does not mean every UGREEN NAS supports Docker or that the container procedure is the correct installation method for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the client on the NAS

  1. Check your NAS model, UGOS version and whether the supported Tailscale package or installation path is available for that system.
  2. Install Tailscale using the method UGREEN documents for your model. Do not substitute a container procedure unless your model supports the required container features.
  3. Start Tailscale and follow its sign-in or authorization prompt.
  4. Sign in with the Tailscale account that will administer your tailnet.
  5. Confirm that the NAS appears as an authorized device in the Tailscale administration view.

Install and authorize each remote device

  1. Install the Tailscale client on the phone, tablet, Windows or macOS computer you will use away from home.
  2. Sign in to the same Tailscale account or tailnet used by the NAS.
  3. Approve the device if the tailnet requires administrator approval.
  4. Turn Tailscale on before opening your NAS application or file service.
  5. Use the NAS address or device name presented by Tailscale and the normal credentials for the NAS service you are accessing.

Keep the NAS and client signed in only on devices you control. Remove old laptops and phones from the tailnet when they are retired, lost or transferred to another person. Tailscale supplies the private transport; UGOS account permissions still determine what a logged-in user can do.

When Tailscale is the better choice

  • You need access from multiple personal devices rather than one browser bookmark.
  • You do not want to configure router port forwarding or maintain a public DNS name.
  • You are comfortable administering a separate private-network account and device list.
  • Your NAS model has a supported Tailscale installation path and you can follow its current UGOS-specific instructions.

Understand UGREEN P2P mode

UGREEN’s P2P article describes a connection mode that uses its relay service together with local IPv6 NAT traversal. Compared with traditional public IPv4 access plus port forwarding, UGREEN says P2P avoids configuring DDNS and domain names and avoids exposing IP addresses in the manner described by that article.

P2P is therefore a connection mechanism, not a promise that every network will provide the same speed or availability. Carrier-grade NAT, restrictive firewalls, disabled IPv6 and client differences can affect how a session is established. If your UGREEN client offers a P2P choice, enable it according to the current model instructions and test it from the networks where you actually work. Do not infer from the word “P2P” that the NAS is unreachable by all third parties or that authentication and software updates no longer matter.

Why DDNS is different

Dynamic DNS gives a changing home IP address a stable hostname. That can be useful for a direct-access architecture, but it does not by itself create a private network. UGREEN’s remote-access material says direct NAS access with DDNS does not go through UGREEN relay servers, and its April 2026 guide says DDNS requires router-side port forwarding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With DDNS, the router must allow an inbound connection and forward it to a selected NAS service. You then become responsible for choosing exactly which port is exposed, restricting source addresses where possible, using HTTPS and valid certificates, enforcing strong authentication, monitoring logs and promptly patching the NAS and the exposed service. Those controls may reduce risk, but they are a different objective from keeping NAS services off the public internet.

For the title’s goal, do not add a DDNS record and port-forwarding rule simply because UGREEN supports it. Use DDNS only after documenting the direct-access requirement, threat model and recovery plan. Never forward SMB, NFS, SSH or the UGOS administration interface to the open internet as a shortcut.

Security settings to apply whichever route you choose

  • Use unique credentials: Set a strong, unique NAS account password and do not reuse the password for your UGREEN Cloud or Tailscale account.
  • Minimize privileges: Create separate accounts for administration and ordinary file access. Give each account only the shares and applications it needs.
  • Protect account recovery: Secure the email address and second-factor method used by your cloud or private-network account.
  • Review devices: Regularly remove unknown or obsolete UGREENlink, Tailscale or client sessions.
  • Patch deliberately: Check the current UGOS release and the instructions for your model before upgrading, especially if you use containers.
  • Avoid accidental exposure: Inspect the router’s port-forwarding and UPnP lists. Delete rules you created while experimenting with DDNS or another remote-access product.
  • Separate testing from production: Test remote access with a non-administrator account and a limited share before granting broader permissions.
  • Plan for loss: If a phone or laptop is lost, revoke its cloud session or remove it from the tailnet immediately, then change credentials if it may have stored them.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause Checks and corrective action
UGREENlink is missing Different UGOS or app layout, unsupported firmware for the documented desktop path, or the device is offline Confirm the model and firmware, check Control Panel > Device Connection > Remote access, and consult the current UGREEN instructions for that release. The cited desktop-app article identifies firmware 1.16.0.0042 or later.
The generated link opens but login fails Wrong NAS account, stale password, or an account without permission for the requested service Test the same account locally, reset the password through the supported administrator flow if necessary, and verify share or application permissions.
UGREENlink works on one network only The remote network may block the connection or require a captive-portal sign-in Complete the remote network’s sign-in page, test cellular data and another Wi-Fi network, and avoid changing router forwarding until you have isolated the network-specific problem.
The NAS does not appear in Tailscale The NAS client is not signed in, the device is awaiting approval, or the installation method is incompatible with the model Check the Tailscale account and device list, approve the NAS if required, verify that the client is running, and return to UGREEN’s model-specific installation instructions.
Tailscale is connected but a service is unavailable The client is off, the address is wrong, or the NAS service account lacks permission Turn Tailscale on for both endpoints, use the NAS address shown in the tailnet, test local access with the same account, and confirm that the service itself is running.
DDNS hostname resolves but access times out Missing or incorrect router forwarding, a changing public address, or an upstream firewall Check the DDNS update status and the exact forwarded port, then verify the router’s WAN address and firewall policy. Do not expose additional NAS services merely to make the test pass.

A practical decision path

Choose UGREENlink when simplicity matters most

Select UGREENlink if you want a supported, built-in browser link and do not need to administer a private network across many devices. It keeps the router setup minimal and gives you a generated link and client ID, while still requiring normal NAS authentication.

Choose Tailscale when you want device-to-device privacy

Select Tailscale when your workflow involves several trusted devices or applications and you want them joined to one private network. The trade-off is an additional account, client installation on every endpoint and model-specific compatibility checking.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Consider P2P when it is the available UGREEN connection mode

Use UGREEN’s P2P mode when your client exposes it and you prefer UGREEN’s relay and NAT-traversal approach over DDNS. Treat it as a connection option whose behavior depends on the networks involved, not as a security guarantee.

Use DDNS only for a consciously direct design

Choose DDNS only when you specifically need direct access and are prepared to operate router forwarding, public DNS, certificates, authentication and ongoing monitoring. It is not the no-public-exposure path described by UGREENlink or Tailscale.

Final checks before relying on remote access

  1. Confirm that no unnecessary inbound router rule points at the NAS.
  2. Test from cellular data or another external network, not only from home Wi-Fi.
  3. Verify that the account used remotely has the minimum required permissions.
  4. Record how to revoke a lost device or cloud session.
  5. Document your NAS model, UGOS version and the method used so a future firmware change can be checked against current support instructions.

For most owners, UGREENlink is the shortest path from an installed NAS to remote access without opening a router port. Tailscale is the stronger fit for a managed private network spanning several devices. Both avoid the direct public-endpoint model that DDNS introduces, while still requiring careful account security and model-appropriate configuration.
