For a private library used by you or a few trusted devices, begin with a home VPN or an overlay network such as Tailscale. Both keep the photo service off the public internet. Use a reverse proxy or Cloudflare Tunnel only when people need browser or mobile access without installing a VPN client, and then design authentication and authorization separately from HTTPS.

Encryption protects traffic in transit; it does not prove that every person reaching the app is allowed to view your photos. Your app, accounts, router, proxy rules, certificates and update process all determine the actual security of the deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “secure remote access” must accomplish

Remote access has three separate jobs:

  • Protect the connection. A VPN or HTTPS prevents other networks from reading traffic in transit.
  • Limit who can reach the service. Network membership, firewall rules, proxy policies and application authentication decide whether a request is admitted.
  • Keep the service maintained. Updates, account protection, certificate renewal and log review matter after the initial setup.

Hiding your home IP address, terminating TLS, or placing a service behind a tunnel does not by itself identify an authorized user. Treat the photo application’s own accounts and any additional access-control layer as part of the security design.

Compare the four practical access patterns

Option Exposure and access Client setup Network requirements Main trade-off
Home VPN (WireGuard or OpenVPN) The app remains on the home network and is reachable through VPN access. Install and activate a VPN client on the VPN server and every connecting device. Forward a router port to the VPN endpoint; use dynamic DNS if the home address changes. Private access with a VPN service to operate and client setup on both ends.
Tailscale Encrypted connections among devices in one tailnet; the photo service need not be public. Install Tailscale and sign in on the server and each connecting device. Designed to work across NAT, avoiding a router VPN port forward in the documented setup. Lower configuration effort, but it adds a coordination service and requires a client on each device.
HTTPS reverse proxy A public hostname can reach the service; the proxy and application may be exposed to internet requests. No VPN application is required on the client. Domain or DDNS name, proxy, trusted HTTPS certificate and inbound internet reachability. Convenient for broad access, but the public attack surface and maintenance burden are larger.
Cloudflare Tunnel An outbound tunnel maps a public hostname to a local service. No VPN client is inherent in the public-hostname path. Run cloudflared and configure hostname routing. No inbound port or public origin IP is required, but public routing still needs explicit access controls.

This is a configuration comparison, not a measured security ranking. The exposed surface depends on the exact photo application, version, account security, router rules and the people who receive access.

Option 1: run a conventional home VPN

When this is the right fit

Choose WireGuard or OpenVPN when you want to operate the private entry point yourself and your router can host a VPN server or forward one port to a VPN host. The photo app stays on a LAN address; remote devices first join the VPN and then use the same internal URL they would use at home.

Implementation sequence

  1. Choose the VPN endpoint. Use a router feature or a maintained server on the home network. Keep the photo service’s own web port off the internet; only the VPN listener should be reachable from outside.
  2. Create keys and peer profiles. Generate a separate profile for each phone, tablet or computer. A lost device can then be revoked without replacing every other profile.
  3. Forward only the VPN port. On the router, create a port-forward rule to the VPN endpoint, not to the photo server. Confirm that the endpoint firewall accepts the selected protocol and port.
  4. Give the home connection a stable name. If the public address changes, configure dynamic DNS and put that hostname in client profiles. Dynamic DNS supplies a name for a changing address; it is not an additional security control.
  5. Install clients on every device. Import the profile into the WireGuard or OpenVPN client on each remote device and activate it before opening the photo app.
  6. Restrict the VPN network. Permit peers to reach only the photo server and any other services they genuinely need. Do not treat VPN membership as a reason to expose every LAN device.
  7. Test from an external network. Disable Wi-Fi on a phone, activate the VPN over cellular data and open the internal photo-library address. Verify that the service is unavailable when the VPN is disconnected.

Operational costs and failure modes

  • A router replacement, firmware change or ISP address change can break access even when the photo application is healthy.
  • Every client must keep its VPN profile private and its software current.
  • Some mobile operating systems pause VPNs in battery-saving modes; check the client status before troubleshooting the photo app.
  • Carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound connections to a home router. In that case, use an overlay network such as Tailscale or a supported outbound design rather than adding random port forwards.

Option 2: use Tailscale as an overlay network

Why it reduces setup friction

Tailscale creates encrypted connectivity between signed-in devices in the same tailnet. The documented NAS and media-server pattern installs Tailscale on the server and on each device that needs access, and it is designed to work through NAT without a router VPN port forward. See the Tailscale remote NAS and media-server guide for supported installation paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setup steps

  1. Install Tailscale on the photo host. Use the package or app for the host operating system, then sign in to the tailnet that will own the devices.
  2. Install it on each client. Add the phone, tablet or computer that should view or upload photos and sign in to the same tailnet.
  3. Confirm device visibility. From a client, verify that the server appears as an online tailnet device and note its tailnet address or name.
  4. Open the library through the private address. Use the photo application’s normal port over the Tailscale connection. Do not create a separate public port-forward rule just because the service works privately.
  5. Apply least-privilege policy. Use the tailnet’s access policy features to allow only intended users or devices to reach the photo host. Tailscale documents policy restrictions for this media-server use case.
  6. Test revocation. Remove a test device or sign it out, then confirm it can no longer connect while authorized devices continue to work.

What you give up

Each client needs the Tailscale application and an active tailnet login. The coordination service is an additional dependency, so retain an account-recovery method and document who administers the tailnet. Tailscale protects the network path; the photo application still needs strong accounts and appropriate sharing permissions.

Option 3: publish an HTTPS reverse proxy

When a public route is justified

A reverse proxy is useful when family members, guests or managed devices must use a normal domain in a browser or mobile app without installing a VPN client. It can terminate HTTPS, route a hostname to the internal photo service and centralize certificate renewal.

Required components

  • A domain name or dynamic-DNS name pointing to your home connection.
  • A reverse-proxy service on a hardened host or router.
  • Inbound routing from the internet to the proxy, with the proxy forwarding only to the photo service.
  • A trusted certificate, such as one issued by Let’s Encrypt, and an automatic renewal process.
  • An explicit access-control plan: application accounts, invite rules, optional identity-aware protection and rate or network restrictions where supported.

Deployment sequence

  1. Create the DNS record and confirm that it resolves to the intended endpoint.
  2. Forward only the proxy’s required HTTPS port to the proxy host. Keep the photo application’s internal port closed at the router.
  3. Configure a virtual host for the photo domain and forward requests to the internal service address.
  4. Obtain and renew a trusted certificate. Browsers and mobile clients should see a valid chain and the exact hostname they requested.
  5. Set the proxy’s upload limits, timeouts and WebSocket or API forwarding according to the photo application’s current deployment documentation.
  6. Enable the application’s authentication and sharing controls before giving anyone the URL. Test an unauthenticated request and an account with limited permissions.
  7. Review access logs and update both the proxy and photo application on a defined schedule.

Exposure to understand

A public hostname can expose the web interface and API, not just a sign-in page. HTTPS encrypts the request but does not decide whether a user may browse another person’s library. A misrouted API path, weak account, stale plugin or permissive sharing rule can therefore defeat an otherwise correct certificate setup.

Option 4: use Cloudflare Tunnel for an outbound connection

How the connectivity model works

Cloudflare Tunnel runs an agent such as cloudflared at home and makes an outbound connection. Cloudflare’s documentation describes routing a public hostname to an internal application without opening an inbound port or revealing the origin IP in the usual way; see Cloudflare Tunnel documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Basic rollout

  1. Install cloudflared on a maintained host that can reach the photo service on the LAN.
  2. Authenticate the connector to the account and hostname that will publish the service.
  3. Create a tunnel and map the public hostname to the photo application’s internal URL and port.
  4. Run the connector as a supervised service so it restarts after reboots and report failures.
  5. Test the hostname from a network outside your home, then test sign-in, uploads, thumbnails, long-running sync and logout.
  6. Configure an identity-aware policy or rely on the application’s accounts deliberately; do not assume the tunnel itself performs user authorization.

Why a tunnel is not the same as a VPN

The public-hostname path is intended for publishing an application. It does not place a client device inside your home network, and the tunnel’s outbound nature does not make the photo library private by itself. Treat the hostname as internet-facing and apply the same account, update, logging and API controls required for a reverse proxy.

Immich-specific cautions

The Immich project’s Remote Access documentation, updated October 8, 2026, states: “Never forward port 2283 directly to the internet without additional configuration.” Port 2283 is the service port referenced by that warning; forwarding it directly would expose the web interface through an unsafe arrangement unless you add the required protections.

Follow the current Immich deployment and remote-access instructions for your release, because the project is actively developed and its documentation notes that severe vulnerabilities cannot be ruled out. Keep the server and its dependencies updated, and verify which authentication, sharing and API controls your version provides before choosing a public route.

Immich also notes that self-signed certificates trigger browser security warnings. Do not train users to bypass those warnings as a normal solution; for public access, use a trusted certificate such as Let’s Encrypt. For a web-only deployment, application or proxy access controls still need to be configured explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by your real users and devices

Only you, or a few trusted devices

Use a home VPN when you can operate the router or VPN host and are comfortable maintaining client profiles. Choose Tailscale when avoiding router port forwarding and reducing network configuration are more important than eliminating a coordination service.

Family members who cannot install a VPN client

Use a reverse proxy or tunnel only after deciding how each person will authenticate and what they may see. A public hostname is convenient, but it makes the web interface and API reachable from the internet and creates ongoing certificate, patching and monitoring work.

No fixed public IP address

Dynamic DNS can keep a VPN or reverse-proxy hostname pointed at a changing home address. It solves naming, not authorization, encryption or vulnerability management.

Hardening checklist before sharing the link

  • Keep the photo application, operating system, VPN, proxy and tunnel connector patched.
  • Use unique, long passwords and multi-factor authentication wherever the application supports it.
  • Create individual accounts instead of sharing an administrator login.
  • Give each account only the albums, upload rights and administrative permissions it needs.
  • Expose only the VPN endpoint or the proxy/tunnel hostname you actually use; remove old port forwards.
  • Use a trusted certificate for every public HTTPS hostname and monitor renewal failures.
  • Restrict tailnet or VPN peers and proxy policies to known users and devices.
  • Review authentication and access logs for unfamiliar locations, repeated failures and unexpected API activity.
  • Back up the original photos and the application database separately from the server that provides remote access.
  • Revoke lost devices, departed users and obsolete share links immediately.
  • Document how to disable the public route or VPN port quickly if the application reports a critical vulnerability.

Troubleshoot by isolating the layer that failed

The hostname does not resolve

Check DNS records, dynamic-DNS updates and whether you are testing from outside the home network. A correct internal service cannot answer until the name reaches the VPN endpoint, proxy or tunnel you selected.

The client connects to the VPN or tailnet but the app is unreachable

Verify the service’s internal address and port, host firewall rules and the VPN or tailnet policy. Confirm that the photo application is listening on the LAN interface rather than only on a loopback address.

The page loads but uploads or mobile sync fail

Check API and WebSocket forwarding, proxy body-size limits, idle timeouts and the application’s externally configured URL. Test a small upload and a large upload separately, then inspect proxy and application logs.

Users can reach the sign-in page but should not have access

Review application accounts, invitations, share links and any proxy or identity policy. Encryption confirms the connection; it does not grant or revoke photo-library permissions.

It worked until the home internet address changed

For a conventional VPN or reverse proxy, verify dynamic-DNS updates and the hostname stored in client profiles. Tailscale’s NAT-traversal model can avoid this particular inbound-address dependency, although its clients and tailnet account still must be healthy.

A safe rollout order

  1. Inventory the photo application, version, internal address, accounts and current router forwards.
  2. Start with a private VPN or Tailscale path and prove that the service works from cellular data.
  3. Harden accounts, permissions, updates and backups before inviting another person.
  4. If a public route is necessary, add a reverse proxy or tunnel in front of the service, obtain a trusted certificate where applicable and test every API and upload function.
  5. Record the configuration, monitor logs and rehearse revoking a device or disabling the route.

This sequence lets you establish reliable private access before accepting the additional exposure and maintenance of a public hostname.
