The safest default is to establish a private VPN connection first, then open the NAS through that connection as if you were at home. Do not publish the NAS administration page, file-sharing ports, or SSH directly to the internet. Choose an overlay VPN for device-to-device access, a traditional VPN on a compatible router or NAS when you need broader home-LAN access, or Synology QuickConnect when its supported apps and relay model fit your needs.

The exact steps depend on your NAS model, firmware, router, ISP, and the client devices you will use. Confirm current vendor documentation before installing packages or forwarding a port.

What secure NAS access from the internet actually means

A NAS normally listens on private LAN addresses such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Your router blocks unsolicited inbound traffic from the internet, so a remote phone or laptop cannot safely reach those addresses without an approved path.

A secure design creates that path without making every NAS service public:

  • Overlay VPN: The NAS and each remote device run a VPN client and join the same private network (often called a tailnet). You then use the NAS’s VPN hostname or address.
  • Traditional VPN: A VPN server runs on a compatible router or NAS. The remote device authenticates to the server and receives virtual access to the home LAN, after which you use the NAS’s normal LAN address.
  • Vendor-managed access: A service such as Synology QuickConnect brokers access for supported Synology clients, potentially using a relay when a direct path is unavailable.

In all three cases, the VPN or managed service changes how the remote device reaches the NAS. It does not replace strong accounts, current firmware, least-privilege permissions, monitoring, or backups.

Choose the method that matches your access pattern

Method Best fit Router changes What you connect to Main trade-offs
Overlay VPN Only enrolled phones, computers, and tablets need NAS access Usually no port forwarding for NAS services NAS VPN name or VPN IP Every device needs a compatible client; relay paths can add latency
Traditional VPN on router You need access to several home-LAN devices, not only the NAS Forward the VPN server’s configured port when the server is behind the router NAS private/LAN IP after the tunnel connects More networking work; support depends on router, ISP, and topology
Traditional VPN on NAS Your NAS firmware includes a supported VPN-server package Forward only the VPN port when required NAS LAN IP after authentication The NAS becomes the VPN endpoint; configuration varies by platform
Synology QuickConnect Supported Synology apps need simple remote connectivity No manual port forwarding or router configuration for supported clients QuickConnect identity through the supported app Third-party apps may not work; relays can be slower and availability varies by region

For remote administration and ordinary file access, start with an overlay VPN or a traditional VPN. QuickConnect is a convenience option for compatible Synology software, not a universal tunnel for every service on the NAS.

Prepare the NAS and home network before enabling remote access

Confirm platform and firmware support

Check the current documentation for your exact NAS model and operating system. Tailscale documents integrations for Synology, QNAP, Unraid, and TrueNAS, but package availability and installation details can differ between models and firmware releases. QNAP and Synology also expose different VPN and external-access features. A feature shown for one product family should not be assumed to exist on another.

Inventory the devices and services you actually need

Write down the remote devices you will enroll and the applications they must use. A laptop mounting an SMB share has different requirements from a phone using a vendor photo app, a media player, or an administration console. This inventory determines whether device-only access is enough or whether you need a route into the wider LAN.

Remove accidental exposure

  • Disable any router forwards for NAS administration, file-sharing, database, web-management, and SSH ports that are not required for your chosen VPN.
  • Do not use a public WAN address as a shortcut to the NAS management page.
  • Review universal plug-and-play (UPnP) port mappings on the router and delete unwanted entries.
  • Update the NAS, router, and VPN clients before testing remote access.

QNAP support documentation, last modified August 4, 2026, warns that exposing SSH to the internet invites brute-force attacks and automated exploit scanners. Its documented pattern is to establish a VPN tunnel first and then connect to the NAS with its local address.

Separate remote-access credentials

Use individual NAS accounts, unique passwords, and multi-factor authentication wherever the platform supports it. Give each account only the shares and administrative rights it needs. A VPN authenticates the network path; it does not make a weak NAS password safe.

Option 1: Use an overlay VPN for enrolled devices

An overlay VPN is usually the simplest choice when only selected devices need access. Tailscale’s NAS guidance describes installing its client or integration on the NAS and installing the client on every remote device. After all devices sign in to the same tailnet, the remote client reaches the NAS by its Tailscale name or Tailscale IP. The NAS service itself does not need to be exposed through a public router port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up the NAS side

  1. Open the NAS vendor’s package or integration mechanism and verify that the current Tailscale package supports your exact model and operating system.
  2. Install the client on the NAS and start it. Complete the sign-in or authorization flow using the account that will own the tailnet.
  3. Record the NAS’s assigned Tailscale hostname and IP address. Keep the NAS’s ordinary LAN address as well; local clients can continue using it.
  4. Review the tailnet device list and disable or remove any device you do not recognize.

Set up each remote device

  1. Install the Tailscale client for the device’s desktop or mobile operating system.
  2. Sign in to the same tailnet used by the NAS. A device signed in to a different account or tailnet will not be able to use the NAS path.
  3. Confirm that the NAS appears as an available device and note its VPN hostname or address.
  4. Open the NAS application, file-share client, or browser using that VPN name or address. Do not replace it with the home router’s public address.

Understand direct and relayed connections

Tailscale documents three connection types: direct, DERP relay, and peer relay. All three use end-to-end WireGuard encryption; the stated difference is primarily performance. A direct path generally provides lower latency and higher throughput. A relay is a fallback when network conditions prevent a direct connection and can be slower, but relaying does not remove the WireGuard encryption.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Connection type Encryption Expected behavior
Direct End-to-end WireGuard Usually the best latency and throughput when networks permit it
DERP relay End-to-end WireGuard Fallback path through a relay; performance can be lower
Peer relay End-to-end WireGuard Uses another suitable peer to relay traffic; performance depends on that path

When an overlay VPN is not enough

An overlay client normally gives the enrolled device a path to the enrolled NAS. It does not automatically make every printer, camera, or server on the home LAN reachable. If your goal is broad subnet access, choose a traditional router VPN or a supported subnet-routing design documented by the VPN and NAS vendors. Do not improvise firewall or route changes without checking the current platform instructions.

Option 2: Run a traditional VPN on the router or NAS

A traditional VPN terminates at one trusted endpoint. QNAP documents WireGuard, OpenVPN, and L2TP/IPsec in QVPN and describes the resulting tunnel as placing the remote computer virtually on the home network. The endpoint can be the NAS or a compatible home router. QNAP’s QHora-301W and QHora-321 are examples of routers documented for VPN-server setup with WireGuard; they are examples, not requirements.

Decide where the VPN server should run

  • Router endpoint: The router can provide access to multiple home-LAN devices and keeps the NAS from handling the public-facing VPN listener.
  • NAS endpoint: This may be convenient when the NAS firmware already includes the required VPN server, but the NAS must remain available as the endpoint and its package must be maintained.

Choose a protocol supported by both the endpoint and your remote clients. WireGuard, OpenVPN, and L2TP/IPsec are not interchangeable configuration files; use the endpoint’s current export and import process.

Configure the endpoint

  1. Enable the VPN-server feature on the compatible router or NAS.
  2. Choose a protocol supported by your clients and create individual user or peer credentials where the platform allows it.
  3. Assign a VPN address range that does not overlap the network used where you will connect. Overlapping ranges can prevent the remote client from deciding whether traffic belongs at home or on the local network.
  4. Set the tunnel policy. A full-tunnel profile sends all client traffic through home; a split-tunnel profile sends only home-network destinations through the VPN. Use the vendor’s supported settings rather than manually editing an unverified profile.
  5. Export the client configuration or scan the vendor-provided enrollment code. Treat that file or code as a secret.

Forward only the VPN port

If the VPN server is behind the router, forward the configured VPN port from the public interface to the VPN endpoint. Keep NAS service ports, management ports, and SSH closed to the internet. The exact port number and transport depend on the protocol and vendor configuration; use the current endpoint documentation rather than copying a port from a different product.

Connect and use the NAS LAN address

  1. Import the profile into the remote device’s VPN client.
  2. Connect while away from home, preferably using a different network such as cellular data so you are testing the real remote path.
  3. Wait for the VPN client to report an established tunnel.
  4. Open the NAS using its ordinary private/LAN address, exactly as you would at home.

QNAP support documentation states: “The correct approach is to first establish a VPN tunnel between your remote computer and the home network, and then connect to the NAS using its local (LAN) IP address exactly as you would from home.”

Router and ISP complications

Setup can fail when the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, when the router is behind another router, or when inbound traffic is filtered. In those cases, port forwarding on the inner router may not be reachable from the public internet. Check the router’s WAN address and topology, then follow the ISP and router vendor’s current guidance. Do not compensate by publishing NAS administration or SSH.

Option 3: Use Synology QuickConnect when its limits fit

Synology describes QuickConnect as a way for supported mobile and PC clients to connect without manually configuring port forwarding or router settings. It can select a connection path and use a relay. Synology states that QuickConnect uses end-to-end encryption when SSL is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it for supported Synology clients

  1. Enable QuickConnect in the current DSM external-access settings and associate it with your Synology account.
  2. Enable SSL for the connection and verify the certificate or secure-connection indicator in the client.
  3. Sign in to the supported Synology mobile or desktop application with the QuickConnect identity.
  4. Test from a network outside the home, then confirm which applications and features work.

Check compatibility before depending on it

QuickConnect does not support every third-party application. Synology documents that some packages require direct IP or DDNS mapping, and relayed links can add latency. Relay availability can also be restricted in some regions. If a required service is unsupported or performance-sensitive, use an overlay or traditional VPN instead.

Security controls that still matter after the tunnel works

  • Accounts: Use unique passwords, multi-factor authentication where available, and separate administrator and daily-use accounts.
  • Permissions: Grant only the shares and applications each person needs. Do not use the built-in administrator account for routine file access.
  • Updates: Keep NAS firmware, packages, router firmware, VPN clients, and mobile apps current. Recheck compatibility after major firmware upgrades.
  • Device enrollment: Remove lost phones, retired laptops, and unknown VPN peers immediately.
  • Backups: Maintain a separate backup copy. Remote access can expose data to account compromise, ransomware, accidental deletion, or hardware failure; a VPN does not prevent any of those outcomes.
  • Logging: Review VPN and NAS sign-in logs for unfamiliar locations, repeated failures, and new devices.
  • Least exposure: Keep the NAS management interface and SSH on private addresses. QNAP’s August 4, 2026 support guidance specifically describes direct WAN SSH exposure as an invitation to brute-force attacks and automated scanners.

Performance, privacy, and usability trade-offs

Throughput

There is no universal fastest method in the documented material. Overlay VPN performance depends on whether the path is direct or relayed. Traditional VPN speed depends on the endpoint hardware, encryption protocol, home upload capacity, and the remote network. QuickConnect performance can fall when a relay is selected.

Privacy and service dependence

An overlay VPN and QuickConnect use a vendor identity or coordination service to help devices find one another or select a path. A traditional VPN can be more self-contained once configured, but it still depends on your router, ISP, DNS or address-discovery arrangement, and client software. Evaluate that operational dependence alongside convenience.

Access scope

Use an overlay VPN when the requirement is “these three devices can reach this NAS.” Use a router VPN when the requirement is “this trusted laptop can reach several services on my home LAN.” Use QuickConnect when the requirement is “this supported Synology app should work with minimal router configuration.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The VPN client will not connect

  • Confirm the remote device is signed in to the correct overlay tailnet or has the correct traditional-VPN profile.
  • For a traditional VPN, verify that the configured VPN port is the only required forward and that the endpoint is actually behind the router receiving the forward.
  • Check for carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, ISP filtering, or a changed home WAN address.
  • Update the endpoint and client, then regenerate credentials if the profile may have been exposed.

The tunnel connects but the NAS is unreachable

  • Overlay VPN: use the NAS’s VPN hostname or VPN IP, not its home public address.
  • Traditional VPN: use the NAS’s LAN IP and confirm the VPN address range does not overlap the remote network.
  • Check NAS firewall rules and ensure the required file or application service is enabled on the private interface.
  • Test the NAS locally first so you do not mistake a disabled service for a VPN failure.

Files open slowly or time out

  • Determine whether the overlay connection is direct or relayed; a relay can increase latency and reduce throughput.
  • Check the home’s upload bandwidth and the remote network’s stability.
  • For QuickConnect, test whether the selected path is relayed and whether the application supports direct mapping.
  • Avoid treating a performance problem as a reason to expose an additional NAS port.

SSH works at home but not remotely

This is expected when the router blocks inbound WAN traffic and no VPN path has been established. QNAP’s support documentation says that direct WAN SSH access should normally fail and warns against exposing SSH to the internet. Connect the VPN first, then use the NAS’s private address if SSH is genuinely required and permitted by your security policy.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Only enrolled devices need access: Start with an overlay VPN and install its client on both the NAS and every remote device.
  2. Several home-LAN devices need access: Use a compatible router VPN or a supported NAS VPN server, then connect to private LAN addresses.
  3. You use supported Synology apps and want minimal router work: Evaluate QuickConnect, enable SSL, and verify application support and relay behavior.
  4. Your NAS or router lacks the required feature: Do not assume a package or protocol is portable. Check the exact vendor and firmware documentation and select another supported method.
  5. Any method requires public NAS administration or SSH: Stop and redesign the setup around a VPN tunnel.

A private VPN path is the sound default because it limits exposure while preserving normal NAS addressing. The right implementation is the one your particular NAS, router, ISP, and client devices support and that you can keep updated and monitored.
