To check voicemail from your own mobile phone, open the Phone app and hold 1; your carrier then connects you to the mailbox and reads the available prompts. Verizon also documents *86. To check messages from another phone, call your 10-digit mobile number (or a carrier-provided access number), interrupt the greeting with the carrier’s specified key, and enter your voicemail password or PIN when asked.
There is no single voicemail number or interruption key that works for every carrier. The instructions below reflect current United States guidance for Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Mobile virtual-network operators, prepaid services, business systems, and roaming arrangements can use different procedures.
What you need before calling voicemail
Have these details ready before you start:
- Your 10-digit mobile number, including the area code.
- The voicemail password or PIN for the mailbox, especially when calling from another phone.
- The phone number of the mailbox owner if you are using a different handset.
- A quiet place where you can hear spoken prompts and enter keypad commands.
Voicemail must already be activated on the line. If the call produces a carrier recording saying the mailbox is unavailable, complete voicemail setup from the subscriber’s phone first, then try remote retrieval again. Initial setup normally includes recording a greeting and creating the mailbox credential.

Calling a mailbox is different from using Visual Voicemail. A call-in mailbox reads messages through an automated voice menu. Visual Voicemail displays messages in a phone interface; the two services can coexist, but opening one does not change the access code for the other.

Which voicemail number should you call?
The right number depends on where you are calling from and which company provides the mailbox. From the associated mobile phone, the usual shortcut is to press and hold 1. Verizon also lists *86. From another phone, you generally call the subscriber’s full 10-digit number and interrupt the greeting. T-Mobile also publishes a separate access number for cases in which calling the mobile number does not work.
Do not copy a code from a friend’s phone or from an old carrier account. An MVNO, prepaid service, or business system can have its own mailbox even when it uses the same underlying cellular network. The provider that bills you for mobile service is the one whose voicemail instructions control.
Carrier voicemail numbers and keypad commands
| Carrier | From the subscriber’s phone | From another phone | Authentication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon | Hold 1, or dial *86. |
Call the 10-digit mobile number and press # while the greeting plays. | Follow the prompts to enter the voicemail password. |
| AT&T | Hold 1. | Call the 10-digit wireless number and press * during the greeting. | A password is required by default for call-in access. |
| T-Mobile | Hold 1. | If calling the mobile number does not work, dial 1-805-637-7249, enter the 10-digit number, and press * during the greeting. |
The device often does not request a password in normal use; a password can be requested in special circumstances, such as a caller-ID-blocked call. |
These are carrier-specific United States instructions, not universal standards. Verizon’s support page updated October 12, 2026, and AT&T’s support page last updated May 5, 2025, describe the procedures above; carrier pages can change as plans and software change.
Check voicemail from your own phone
Verizon
- Open the Phone app.
- On the keypad, press and hold 1, or dial
*86. - Wait for the voicemail system to answer.
- Enter your password when requested and follow the spoken menu.
Verizon’s documented remote-retrieval instructions also use the 10-digit mobile number and the # key, so do not substitute the AT&T interruption key when calling a Verizon mailbox. If holding 1 opens a different service, dial *86 manually rather than assuming the mailbox is disabled.
AT&T
- Open the Phone app and press and hold 1.
- When the voicemail system answers, enter the password if prompted.
- Use the spoken options to listen to, delete, or save messages.
AT&T says a password is required by default when you call to access voicemail. If the password has never been created or is no longer accepted, use the carrier’s current account-support process rather than repeatedly guessing. When calling from a borrowed phone, wait until the greeting is actually playing before pressing *.
T-Mobile
- Open the Phone app and press and hold 1.
- Wait for the mailbox menu and follow the prompts.
- If holding 1 does not connect, use T-Mobile’s alternate access procedure: dial
1-805-637-7249, enter the 10-digit mobile number, press * while the greeting plays, and enter the password if requested.
T-Mobile’s normal on-device behavior often does not ask for a password. That convenience should not be interpreted as proof that the mailbox has no password; a password can still be requested in special calling contexts, and T-Mobile recommends protecting the mailbox with one.
Check voicemail from another phone
Remote retrieval follows the same basic pattern regardless of handset: reach the mailbox, interrupt the greeting, authenticate, and use the menu. The interruption key is carrier-specific.

- From the other phone, call the subscriber’s 10-digit mobile number unless the carrier provides a separate access number.
- Wait for the personal greeting or the automated voicemail greeting to begin. Key presses made before the greeting can be ignored.
- Press the carrier’s interruption key while the greeting is playing: # for Verizon or * for AT&T. T-Mobile’s alternate access number also uses * after you enter the 10-digit number.
- Enter the voicemail password or PIN. The system may not accept the account password used for the carrier’s website or billing account; use the mailbox credential instead.
- Listen to the menu and choose the required action, such as replaying, deleting, or saving a message.
Verizon’s support wording is: “If calling from another number, dial the 10-digit mobile phone number then press # to interrupt the greeting.” AT&T similarly states: “You can also check your messages from another phone by calling your 10-digit wireless number, then pressing the * key when you hear your voicemail greeting.” Both instructions are carrier-specific, so exchanging the two keys will usually leave you listening to the greeting instead of entering the mailbox.
Why the call may seem to connect to the person instead
If the subscriber answers the call, let it go to voicemail or end the call and try again. Remote access is available only once the voicemail greeting is playing. A line with call forwarding, a busy greeting, or an uncompleted mailbox setup can produce a different recording from the one expected. In each case, follow the provider’s current setup instructions instead of repeatedly pressing keys.
How authentication works
Password or PIN prompts
A remote call cannot rely on the subscriber handset’s trusted connection, so carriers commonly request a voicemail password or PIN. Verizon’s retrieval flow asks for the password. AT&T requires a password by default for call-in access. T-Mobile may skip a prompt when you call from the associated device, but can request one when the caller’s identity is hidden or the call comes from another phone.
If you do not know the credential
- Do not keep trying random numbers; repeated failures can trigger a lockout or require account recovery.
- Check the carrier’s current voicemail-support page or account tools for the reset process for your exact plan.
- If the mailbox was recently activated, complete the initial setup, including a greeting and password, before attempting remote access.
- When contacting support, explain that you need the voicemail password reset, not the password for the carrier’s online account.
Changing the online account password does not necessarily change the voicemail password. Treat the mailbox credential as a separate secret, particularly when other people may use the carrier account but should not hear personal messages.
When holding 1 or the access code fails
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the line. Make sure the phone is using the intended SIM or eSIM and that the call is placed from the mobile line whose voicemail you want.
- Dial manually. If holding 1 launches a different service, open the keypad and enter the carrier’s published code instead. For Verizon, try
*86. - Verify setup. Call the line from another phone. If no greeting exists, voicemail may not have been initialized.
- Use the right interruption key. Press the key only after the greeting starts. Pressing it before the greeting can be ignored by the system.
- Check the number format. For remote access, use all 10 digits, including the area code. For T-Mobile’s alternate route, enter the 10-digit number after dialing
1-805-637-7249. - Unhide caller ID when required. Some systems change authentication behavior when the calling number is blocked. T-Mobile notes that a password prompt can appear in a caller-ID-blocked context.
- Check carrier instructions for the exact plan. MVNOs, prepaid lines, business accounts, and regional services can alter voicemail access even when they use the same underlying network.
- Try another handset or network. A defective dialer, poor signal, or a phone setting that sends tones incorrectly can prevent the mailbox from recognizing keypad entries.
- Contact carrier support. Give the representative the exact recording, the number you dialed, and whether you were calling from the subscriber phone or a different phone.
If the greeting keeps restarting after you press the interruption key, check that you are pressing the key during the greeting, not after the system has moved to another prompt. If the system accepts the key but rejects the password, stop guessing and use the carrier’s reset process.
Saving and deleting messages
Use the spoken menu’s save option before ending a call if a message matters. Retention is controlled by the carrier and voicemail type, not by the phone’s call history.
T-Mobile states that messages are automatically deleted after 14 to 30 days, depending on the voicemail type. While listening to a T-Mobile message, pressing 9 saves it according to the carrier’s instructions. This range and key should not be applied to Verizon, AT&T, or another provider unless that provider publishes the same rule.

Because retention policies differ, do not leave an important message unattended simply because it is visible in the app. Save it through the mailbox menu as soon as practical, and verify that the system confirms the save action before hanging up.

Deleting a message from the call-in mailbox can also remove it from Visual Voicemail, because both interfaces may access the same mailbox. Treat deletion as permanent unless the carrier’s menu explicitly provides a recovery option.
Calling voicemail versus Visual Voicemail
Calling is the most portable method: it works from the subscriber phone or, when remote access is enabled, from another phone. It does not require a data connection or a Visual Voicemail-capable handset. The trade-off is that messages are heard sequentially through voice prompts, and remote calls generally require authentication.
Visual Voicemail presents a list of messages with controls for play, pause, deletion, and sometimes transcription. AT&T explains that Visual Voicemail messages download to a smartphone over cellular data. That download-based interface is separate from calling the mailbox; if the app is not loading, you can still try the call-in procedure, and if a call-in shortcut fails, Visual Voicemail may remain available.
Visual Voicemail is therefore an alternative interface, not a universal replacement for the carrier access number. An app can show the mailbox without telling you which key to press when calling from a different phone.

Costs, connectivity, and privacy
Connectivity
The instructions require an active phone connection. A Wi-Fi-only device without voice service cannot place the ordinary carrier call unless the carrier supports a separate calling feature. If you are abroad or roaming, the short code may not work, and the carrier’s international voicemail instructions take precedence.
Charges
The carrier guidance here does not establish a universal fee or a universal allowance for voicemail calls. A call from another phone can be billed according to the calling phone’s plan, and an international or roaming call can follow different rates. Check both the mailbox carrier and the phone used to place the call before relying on remote access. A separate access number does not automatically mean the call is free.

Privacy and shared phones
Never leave a voicemail password saved in a shared phone’s notes or disclose it in a greeting. After checking messages from a borrowed phone, delete the call from that handset’s recent-call list if privacy matters, and do not enable caller-ID blocking unless you know how it changes the carrier’s authentication flow.
Special cases and limits
MVNO and prepaid service
An MVNO or prepaid provider may publish a different voicemail number, shortcut, retention policy, or password rule even when calls use Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile network infrastructure. Use the service provider’s own support instructions first; do not assume the host network’s code will work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBusiness and hosted phone systems
A business extension, shared mailbox, or hosted telephone system can use an access number and mailbox ID unrelated to a mobile subscriber number. The three mobile procedures in this guide do not apply to those systems.
Dual-SIM phones
On a dual-SIM device, confirm which line is selected before holding 1. The shortcut is handled by the active voice line, so selecting the wrong SIM can open a different mailbox or produce an error.
Changing carriers or phones
After porting a number, the old carrier’s voicemail shortcut may continue to appear in the Phone app until the new carrier profile is installed. Recheck the new provider’s current instructions, set up the new mailbox, and replace any saved speed-dial entry.
Roaming and international access
A short code that works on a domestic network may not work while roaming. Use the provider’s published international procedure, check the calling phone’s rates, and remember that a blocked caller ID can alter password behavior. Do not infer that a successful domestic shortcut will work from every country.

- You have the subscriber phone: hold 1; use Verizon’s
*86if needed; then follow prompts. - You have another phone and Verizon service: call the 10-digit mobile number, press # during the greeting, and enter the password.
- You have another phone and AT&T service: call the 10-digit wireless number, press * during the greeting, and enter the password.
- You have another phone and T-Mobile service: first try the mobile number; if that fails, dial
1-805-637-7249, enter the 10-digit number, press *, and authenticate if asked. - You are using an MVNO, prepaid line, business mailbox, or roaming service: use that provider’s own access instructions rather than the host network’s code.
- None of these paths works: verify voicemail setup and consult the current instructions for your exact provider, plan, and region.
Keeping access reliable
Set a voicemail password even when the carrier normally skips the prompt from your own phone. Record the carrier’s current access procedure in a secure password manager rather than relying on memory, and review the mailbox periodically so time-limited messages are not lost. If you change providers, reset the greeting and password on the new mailbox instead of carrying over assumptions from the previous service.

For current United States service, the practical rule is simple: hold 1 from the associated phone, and use the carrier-specific remote sequence from another phone. The number, interruption key, password behavior, and retention period all belong to the carrier’s voicemail system, so verify them whenever your plan or provider changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What number do I call to check voicemail from my own phone?
For Verizon, hold 1 or dial *86. For AT&T and T-Mobile, hold 1. The shortcut belongs to the carrier providing your voicemail, so MVNO and prepaid customers should use their provider’s instructions.
How do I check voicemail from another phone?
Call the subscriber’s 10-digit mobile number, wait for the greeting, press the carrier’s interruption key, and enter the voicemail password. Verizon uses #; AT&T uses *. T-Mobile also lists 1-805-637-7249 as an alternate access number.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does pressing 1 not open voicemail?
Confirm that the intended SIM or eSIM is active, then dial the published access code manually. Verizon users can try *86. If the mailbox has not been initialized, complete setup before trying remote access.
Do I use my carrier account password for voicemail?
Not necessarily. The voicemail password or PIN can be separate from the password used for online billing or account management. Use the mailbox credential and request a voicemail-specific reset if you do not know it.
Can I access voicemail with caller ID blocked?
Possibly, but authentication can change. T-Mobile notes that a password prompt can appear when caller ID is blocked. Unhide caller ID when troubleshooting unless your provider instructs otherwise.
How long are voicemail messages kept?
Retention is carrier- and mailbox-specific. T-Mobile says messages are automatically deleted after 14 to 30 days depending on voicemail type, and pressing 9 while listening saves a message under its instructions. Do not apply that rule to other carriers without confirmation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is Visual Voicemail the same as calling voicemail?
No. Visual Voicemail displays messages in an app or phone interface, while call-in voicemail uses spoken prompts. They can access the same mailbox, so deleting a message in one interface may remove it from the other.
Could calling voicemail cost money?
There is no universal fee or allowance established for every plan. A call from another phone follows that phone’s calling plan, and international or roaming calls can have different rates. Check both providers before making a long retrieval call.
The Bottom Line
Hold 1 from the associated phone, or call the mailbox owner’s 10-digit number from another phone and use the carrier’s interruption key: # for Verizon and * for AT&T. T-Mobile also offers 1-805-637-7249. Enter the voicemail password when requested, and verify your provider’s current rules for setup, charges, and message retention.
