The right way to access NVIDIA’s research models depends on what you need to do. For a quick experiment, use NVIDIA’s hosted model and API experience. To inspect or modify weights, download the relevant artifacts from NVIDIA’s NGC catalog or its linked Hugging Face repositories. For training, post-training, evaluation, data work, or safety controls, use the open-source NeMo toolkit. For packaged inference, use NIM through a hosted API or a self-hosted microservice.

These routes are not interchangeable. An open model artifact, a hosted endpoint, a NIM package, and a commercial deployment can have different licenses, hardware requirements, prices, and support terms. Select the route first, then verify the exact model card and current product terms before you run or redistribute anything.

What NVIDIA offers and which access route to use

NVIDIA presents several entry points rather than one universal download page. Your choice should follow the immediate job: exploring a model, obtaining files, customizing a model, or serving inference.

Route What you receive Best for Important qualification
NVIDIA model and API experience Browser-based model trials, API access, and hosted endpoints Fast evaluation, prompt experiments, and validating an idea before setting up hardware Hosted access is not the same as receiving model weights or a right to self-host them.
NVIDIA NGC catalog Catalog entries for models, containers, and related NVIDIA software artifacts Downloading artifacts and using NVIDIA-packaged environments on NVIDIA infrastructure Each entry can have its own software, license, and hardware requirements.
Azure ML model catalog Models exposed through Microsoft’s managed machine-learning catalog Teams already operating experiments, permissions, and deployment workflows in Azure Azure’s account, region, quota, and service rules apply in addition to the model’s terms.
Hugging Face Model repositories, cards, downloadable checkpoints, and associated files Inspecting, downloading, and adapting openly published artifacts The repository’s model card and license are the authority for that particular release.

NVIDIA’s catalog and partner catalogs change over time. A page that lists a model today may later change its files, access gate, supported software, or license notice. Record the model revision and the date you selected it so an experiment can be reproduced.

Choose a model family by the research task

Nemotron for general language-model work

Nemotron is one of NVIDIA’s open model families. It is the relevant starting point for language-model experiments such as prompting, evaluation, fine-tuning, and inference studies. The Nemotron page links to downloadable model resources and describes model data and optimization resources as openly published. “Open,” however, does not establish identical rights for every checkpoint, dataset, component, or deployment method; inspect the terms attached to the exact release.

Cosmos for physical-AI research

NVIDIA positions Cosmos for physical-AI use cases. If your work involves understanding or generating data about the physical world, examine the individual Cosmos model page rather than assuming that a language model is the appropriate baseline.

Isaac GR00T for robotics

Isaac GR00T is presented as a robotics-oriented family. Robotics projects should check the model’s input modalities, simulator or sensor assumptions, and supported runtime before downloading anything. Those details are model-specific and are not implied by the family name alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clara for biomedical applications

Clara is NVIDIA’s biomedical-focused family. Biomedical research has additional data-governance and validation obligations, so treat the model card, technical documentation, and your institution’s review requirements as part of the access decision.

Use the model page, not the family label, as the specification

Family names describe a broad purpose; they do not tell you the parameter size, context length, modality, precision, memory requirement, or permitted use of a specific checkpoint. Compare the model card, technical report, license, and release notes for the exact model identifier you plan to run.

Try a hosted model before downloading anything

Hosted evaluation is the shortest path to an initial result because NVIDIA supplies the serving infrastructure. It is useful when you need to compare prompts, test an API integration, or determine whether a model is worth deploying locally.

  1. Open NVIDIA’s model and API experience. Browse the available models and select the one whose task and modality match your experiment.
  2. Choose the browser interface or API option. The browser GUI is convenient for interactive trials; an API or hosted endpoint is better for repeatable scripts and application prototypes.
  3. Read the model-specific information before sending sensitive data. Check the stated use restrictions, data handling information, context or input limits, and any access requirements shown for that endpoint.
  4. Run a small, representative evaluation. Use a fixed prompt set and save the model identifier, settings, outputs, and date. A short evaluation can reveal latency, refusal behavior, formatting reliability, and task fit without committing to infrastructure.
  5. Decide whether hosted access is sufficient. Stay hosted when you need experimentation only. Move to downloaded artifacts or self-hosting when you need controlled data residency, offline operation, custom weights, or repeatable infrastructure.

A hosted result does not prove that the same model can be run on a personal workstation. Hosted services can use hardware, quantization, batching, and software versions that are not available in your environment.

Download and inspect model artifacts

Use the NGC catalog or the NVIDIA-linked Hugging Face repository when you need files that you can study, cache, or adapt. Downloading is a technical and legal inspection step, not merely a larger version of a browser trial.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Before downloading

  • Identify the exact model name, release or revision, and supported formats.
  • Read the model card and license in full, including restrictions on redistribution, commercial use, attribution, acceptable use, and derivative models.
  • Check the technical report or documentation for architecture, tokenizer, context limits, supported modalities, and evaluation methodology.
  • Confirm the hardware and software notes: accelerator type, GPU memory, CUDA or framework expectations, operating-system support, and whether quantized or reduced-precision files are provided.
  • Estimate storage for weights, tokenizer files, caches, containers, and temporary conversion files. The repository size is not necessarily the peak disk space required during conversion or loading.

Download from Hugging Face

Follow NVIDIA’s model link to the specific Hugging Face repository, then use the repository’s documented download method. If access is gated, complete the displayed account or license acknowledgement rather than looking for an unofficial mirror. Keep the repository revision with your experiment metadata. Do not assume that a similarly named repository is the same release.

Download from NGC

Use the NGC catalog entry associated with the model or container. NGC may provide a containerized environment in addition to model files. Read the entry’s launch instructions and license before pulling a large artifact. A container can make the software stack reproducible, but it does not remove the model’s own usage restrictions.

Verify what you received

After downloading, compare the file list and checksums when the publisher supplies them. Confirm that the tokenizer, configuration, generation settings, and any required auxiliary files are present. Load the model in an isolated test environment first; a successful download does not guarantee that the checkpoint is compatible with your installed framework or accelerator.

Customize, train, and evaluate with NeMo

NeMo is NVIDIA’s open-source development and customization toolkit family. It is broader than an inference server: NVIDIA describes NeMo resources for data curation, training, post-training, reinforcement learning, evaluation, guardrails, and related agent and model work. NVIDIA also publishes code, documentation, and containers for these workflows.

Use NeMo for data and training preparation

Start with the NeMo documentation that matches your task. Data curation tools can help prepare or filter training material; training components support model adaptation; post-training and reinforcement-learning tools address behavior after pretraining. Keep a manifest of data versions, filters, prompts, reward or preference sources, and configuration changes so that an evaluation result can be traced to a specific run.

Use evaluation and safety tooling as part of the experiment

Run task-specific evaluations before and after customization, not only a single general benchmark. NeMo’s evaluation and guardrail-related tooling can be part of a research pipeline that checks factuality, refusal behavior, format adherence, safety policies, and regressions introduced by fine-tuning. Define acceptance criteria before comparing checkpoints.

Use containers when the software stack is difficult to reproduce

NVIDIA’s packaged containers can reduce setup differences between machines. Match the container version to the framework, CUDA stack, driver, and model documentation. A container is not a guarantee of compatibility with every NVIDIA GPU generation; the model and container notes remain the final authority.

Serve inference with NIM

NIM is NVIDIA’s packaged inference route. NVIDIA describes hosted NIM APIs for prototyping and self-hosted NIM microservices for research and development. NIM can therefore sit between a browser experiment and a fully custom serving stack: you use a prepared inference service instead of assembling every serving component yourself.

Hosted NIM API

Use a hosted NIM API when you want an API-shaped prototype without managing GPU servers. Follow the offering’s current access instructions, record the exact microservice and model version, and test limits such as concurrency, context size, rate limits, and output format before designing an application around them.

Self-hosted NIM microservice

Self-hosting gives you control over data location and the serving environment, but it makes you responsible for NVIDIA drivers, supported GPUs, container runtime, storage, networking, monitoring, scaling, and patching. Download the microservice or container from the documented NVIDIA route, then verify its GPU support and license for your intended use.

Do not merge separate NIM terms

The Nemotron page states that using Nemotron models as NIM requires an NVIDIA AI Enterprise license. Separately, NVIDIA’s NIM offering documentation describes its NIM offer as available at no charge under applicable license terms and without Enterprise support. These statements describe particular offers, not a blanket rule for every model, NIM package, or production deployment. Read the current terms for the exact combination of model and microservice you selected; “free to download” and “supported for commercial production” are different questions.

Can you run NVIDIA’s models locally?

Often, yes, but there is no universal consumer-GPU answer. NVIDIA’s NIM material assumes NVIDIA-accelerated infrastructure, while individual model releases can differ substantially in memory use, precision, context length, modality, and software compatibility. The available sources do not establish that every open NVIDIA model runs on a particular RTX card or workstation.

Check these requirements before buying or provisioning hardware

  • Model memory: Check the model card’s stated GPU-memory requirement for the precision and batch size you intend to use. Weight size alone is not the total runtime requirement.
  • Runtime support: Confirm the required CUDA, driver, framework, Python, container, and operating-system versions.
  • Workload shape: Interactive chat, long-context generation, batch inference, fine-tuning, and multimodal processing have different memory and throughput profiles.
  • Storage and data movement: Allow room for checkpoints, tokenizer files, caches, containers, logs, and temporary conversion artifacts.
  • Expansion path: If you may increase context, batch size, or model count, plan for the resulting memory and orchestration needs rather than sizing only for a short demo.

If the model card does not state a requirement that matters to your setup, treat that as unresolved and test on the proposed hardware before committing to a purchase. A hosted trial can help establish task fit, but it cannot substitute for a local compatibility test.

Understand what “open” does and does not mean

NVIDIA publishes open model resources, but “open model” is not a single legal category. A release can include weights, code, data documentation, and optimization resources under different notices. The license for the checkpoint may differ from the license for a container, tokenizer, dataset, or serving product.

For every artifact, answer four separate questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Can I access it? Some repositories or hosted endpoints require an account, approval, or acknowledgement.
  2. Can I inspect or modify it? The model license may permit research and adaptation while imposing conditions on redistribution or derivatives.
  3. Can I deploy it? A model license does not automatically grant rights to use a particular NIM package or hosted service.
  4. Can I use it commercially and obtain support? Commercial rights, paid support, enterprise licensing, and service-level commitments are offer-specific.

Keep the license text and terms with your experiment record. Recheck them when moving from a private study to publication, a shared checkpoint, an internal product, or a customer-facing service.

A practical selection workflow

Use this sequence when a project is still undefined:

  1. Define the outcome. Decide whether you need an answer from a hosted model, files for inspection, customized weights, or a production-like inference service.
  2. Shortlist by task. Begin with the family and modality that fit the work—Nemotron for language-model work, Cosmos for physical-AI work, Isaac GR00T for robotics, or Clara for biomedical applications—then select a specific model page.
  3. Run a controlled hosted trial. Establish a baseline with a fixed evaluation set before spending time on downloads or training.
  4. Inspect the release. Read the model card, technical report, hardware notes, and license. Capture the revision and date.
  5. Select the development path. Use NeMo when the experiment requires curation, training, post-training, reinforcement learning, evaluation, guardrails, or related model and agent work. Use NIM when the primary need is packaged inference.
  6. Validate locally or in your cloud. Reproduce a small workload with the proposed container, driver, accelerator, and data controls before scaling.
  7. Review deployment rights. Recheck model, container, NIM, and hosting terms at the point where other people or production systems will use the result.

Common failure points and fixes

The download works but the model will not load

Check that all repository files were downloaded, the model revision matches the documented code, and your framework and driver versions satisfy the model notes. A missing tokenizer or configuration file can look like a corrupted checkpoint. If the model requires more memory than available, test a documented reduced-precision or quantized variant rather than guessing at unsupported conversions.

The hosted output cannot be reproduced locally

Hosted endpoints may use a different model revision, quantization, system prompt, sampling configuration, or serving stack. Record those settings during the hosted test, then compare them with the local model card and runtime configuration.

Terms are unclear

Do not infer permission from a repository being publicly visible or from the word “open.” Read the exact license and the NIM or hosting terms. If the terms do not answer your intended redistribution or commercial scenario, pause the deployment and obtain a current interpretation from the rights holder or your organization’s counsel.

The container starts but inference fails

Verify the NVIDIA driver, GPU visibility, container runtime, supported accelerator list, mounted model path, and available memory. Then compare the microservice version with the model version. NIM and NeMo containers are packaged environments, not universal compatibility layers.

How many NVIDIA open models are available?

NVIDIA reported more than 650 open models and 250 open datasets in its October 28, 2025 blog, describing its then-current Hugging Face contributions. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed current catalog total. Catalog contents and counts can change, so use the live model and repository pages when planning a new project.

Bottom line for researchers

Start hosted if you are still testing the question. Download from NGC or the NVIDIA-linked Hugging Face repository when you need to inspect or adapt artifacts. Use NeMo for the development pipeline and NIM for packaged inference, whether hosted or self-managed. At every transition, verify the exact model revision, hardware and software requirements, license, deployment rights, and support terms. That discipline matters more than choosing a route because it happens to be labeled “open.”
