The dependable pattern is to run the GUI program, a desktop session, and a VNC server in Docker; place noVNC and websockify in front of that VNC service; and let Caddy provide the public HTTPS endpoint. A browser then connects to Caddy, Caddy proxies the HTTP and WebSocket traffic to noVNC, and noVNC translates the browser session into VNC traffic for the containerized desktop.
Keep the VNC TCP port on a private Docker network whenever possible. Publish only the noVNC gateway, bind that published port to the interface Caddy actually uses, and add authentication before exposing the hostname outside your trusted network.

VNC carries a remote framebuffer: the server draws the desktop and sends screen updates, while the client sends keyboard and pointer events back. Traditional VNC clients use a TCP socket, which is not directly usable by a browser. noVNC is an HTML5 VNC client and JavaScript library; its normal deployment serves the noVNC files from a web server and uses a WebSocket proxy to reach the VNC server. websockify supplies that bridge when the VNC server does not speak WebSockets itself.
Caddy sits at the edge. It accepts HTTPS, handles the browser’s WebSocket upgrade, and reverse-proxies the request to the noVNC service. The resulting path is:

Browser (HTTPS/WSS) → Caddy → noVNC/websockify (HTTP/WebSocket) → TigerVNC (VNC TCP) → desktop session → GUI application
Docker supplies the isolation and service-to-service network. A container can contain all components, but separate containers are easier to update and let you keep the raw VNC listener inaccessible from the host.
Components and their responsibilities
| Component | Job | Where it should listen |
|---|---|---|
| GUI application | The program you need to operate remotely. | Inside the desktop session in the application container. |
| Lightweight desktop session | Provides windows, menus, clipboard handling and input focus for the application. | Inside the application container, attached to the VNC display. |
| TigerVNC or another VNC server | Captures the desktop framebuffer and accepts VNC input. | Private Docker network, normally on the VNC service port selected by the image. |
| noVNC | Delivers the browser client and renders the VNC desktop in an HTML5 canvas. | HTTP endpoint reachable by Caddy. |
| websockify | Converts WebSocket frames from noVNC into a TCP connection to the VNC server. | Alongside noVNC, listening on the gateway port. |
| Caddy | Terminates TLS, applies edge authentication and proxies HTTP/WebSocket traffic. | Host network or a container on the same Docker network. |
The exact image, desktop package and environment-variable names are image-specific. Confirm those details in the image documentation instead of assuming that a variable used by one VNC image works in another.
Decide the network and exposure model first
Private gateway behind a VPN or identity proxy
This is the safest default for an administrative or internal tool. Caddy and the noVNC gateway are reachable only through a VPN or an identity-aware access layer. The VNC service has no published port, and the gateway can also remain unexposed to the public internet.
Public HTTPS endpoint with application authentication
Use this only when users genuinely need internet access. Caddy must have a valid certificate, and the route needs authentication, rate limiting and monitoring. The VNC port still stays private; public reachability belongs to the authenticated HTTPS gateway, not to VNC itself.
Host Caddy versus containerized Caddy
| Placement | Proxy target | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Caddy on the host | A host-bound gateway such as 127.0.0.1:6080. |
Simple certificate and service management; only the gateway port needs a host binding. |
| Caddy in Docker | The Docker service name and gateway port, such as novnc:6080. |
No host binding is required for the gateway, but Caddy must share the application network and persist its certificate storage. |
Minimal desktop versus full desktop
| Choice | Advantages | Costs |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal window manager | Fewer processes, lower CPU and memory use, and less screen redraw activity. | Fewer desktop conveniences and possible incompatibility with applications that expect a complete desktop environment. |
| Full desktop environment | More familiar settings panels, services and integration for desktop applications. | More resource use and more background rendering across a latency-sensitive connection. |
Prerequisites
- A Docker host with permission to create networks, run containers and bind the ports Caddy will use.
- A container image that includes the GUI application, a desktop session and a VNC server, or separate images that can share a display and filesystem as required by the application.
- noVNC files and websockify, either in a gateway image or installed in a small gateway container.
- A DNS name pointing to the Caddy host if the endpoint will be reached by hostname.
- A plan for authentication, VNC passwords, application data persistence and image updates.
Test the stack on a private address before adding DNS or opening a firewall rule. This separates container and display problems from certificate and public-routing problems.
Build the Docker network and GUI service
1. Create an isolated network
docker network create gui-net
Attach the GUI container, the noVNC/websockify container and, when Caddy is containerized, Caddy itself to gui-net. Docker’s user-defined network supplies service-name DNS, so the gateway can connect to a host such as gui without knowing its changing container IP address.

2. Start the GUI, desktop and VNC server
Use the image’s documented startup command. A generic run shape is:
docker run -d
--name gui
--network gui-net
--shm-size=1g
-e DISPLAY=:1
-e VNC_PASSWORD_FILE=/run/secrets/vnc_password
-v gui-data:/data
${GUI_IMAGE}
The variable names above are an example interface, not a universal contract. Replace them with the image’s actual settings. The important outcomes are that the desktop starts on a display, the VNC server listens on the Docker network, and the GUI process launches inside that display. If the image uses a supervisor, entrypoint script or a separate command to start TigerVNC, follow that image’s sequence rather than starting a second VNC server.
Keep user data in a named volume or a host bind mount when the application needs files to survive container replacement. Do not put passwords directly in a shell history or an image layer; use a secret mechanism supported by the image or your deployment platform.
3. Verify the VNC listener from the network
Before involving noVNC, inspect the container logs and confirm that the desktop and VNC server started without an authentication or display-number error:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →docker logs gui
From a temporary diagnostic container on the same network, test the selected VNC port:
docker run --rm --network gui-net ${DIAGNOSTIC_IMAGE}
sh -c 'nc -vz gui ${VNC_PORT}'
Use the port exposed by the image. A successful TCP check proves reachability, not that the password, display geometry or desktop startup is correct.

Add noVNC and websockify
Gateway in a sidecar container
Run a gateway image that contains noVNC and websockify, and point it at the GUI service name. Many images expose a web port such as 6080, but the actual port and command-line options vary:
docker run -d
--name novnc
--network gui-net
${NOVNC_IMAGE}
websockify --web=/opt/noVNC ${GATEWAY_PORT} gui:${VNC_PORT}
The command illustrates the relationship: websockify serves the noVNC web files and forwards the WebSocket connection to gui:${VNC_PORT}. If your image already provides an entrypoint, pass only its documented VNC target and listen-port options. Check where the image stores noVNC; common paths differ, and an incorrect --web path produces a gateway that accepts connections but cannot load the client.
Recommended Free Tools
Gateway bundled with the GUI container
Bundling is acceptable for a small, single-purpose deployment. In that arrangement, the same container starts the desktop, VNC server and websockify, and Caddy proxies to its gateway port. The separation is less flexible: updating noVNC may require rebuilding the GUI image, and a failure in one process can affect all layers.
Do not publish the VNC socket
Do not add a host mapping such as -p 5900:5900 merely to make the gateway work. The gateway reaches the VNC service over gui-net. Publishing the raw socket creates another attack surface and invites clients to bypass the browser gateway’s TLS and authentication.
Publish only the gateway port
When Caddy runs on the host
Bind the gateway to loopback so it is reachable by host Caddy but not directly from other network interfaces:
docker run -d
--name novnc
--network gui-net
-p 127.0.0.1:6080:${GATEWAY_PORT}
${NOVNC_IMAGE}
Docker documents that publishing a port forwards traffic from the host or local network into the container, and that an unconstrained publish normally listens on all host interfaces. The loopback binding is therefore deliberate. If Caddy is on another host, bind to a private interface or private address instead, and restrict the firewall to that peer.

When Caddy runs in Docker
Attach Caddy to gui-net and omit the host publish entirely:
docker network connect gui-net caddy
Caddy can then proxy to novnc:${GATEWAY_PORT}. If Caddy is created by Compose, declare both services on the same user-defined network and persist Caddy’s data directory so certificates survive container recreation.
Configure Caddy for HTTPS and WebSockets
Host-based Caddyfile
For host Caddy and a loopback-bound gateway, the route is concise:
remote.example.test {
reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:6080
}
Caddy’s reverse proxy handles the HTTP request and WebSocket upgrade used by noVNC. You do not need a separate WebSocket proxy directive. Replace the hostname with one whose DNS points to the Caddy host, and make sure the firewall permits HTTPS to Caddy.
Containerized Caddyfile
remote.example.test {
reverse_proxy novnc:${GATEWAY_PORT}
}
Here the service name resolves through Docker’s network DNS. A common failure is placing Caddy and noVNC on different networks; the proxy then reports an upstream-resolution or connection error even though both containers are running.
Add an authentication layer
HTTPS encrypts the session but does not decide who may open it. Add Caddy authentication, an identity-aware proxy, a VPN requirement, or authentication supplied by the gateway image. If using Caddy’s built-in basic authentication, generate a password hash with the Caddy command-line tool and place the resulting hash in the route’s authentication block. Never put a plaintext password in the Caddyfile or commit it to source control.

Use a separate authentication policy for the GUI application if it has one. VNC authentication protects the VNC protocol; it does not replace HTTPS authentication, account lifecycle controls or audit logging at the public edge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Open and validate the browser session
- Confirm that Caddy obtained a certificate and that the hostname resolves to the intended host.
- Open the noVNC page through the HTTPS hostname. The exact path depends on the image; many packages expose a page named
vnc.html, while others set a custom landing path. - Enter the VNC password when noVNC requests it. If the gateway supplies a connection form, verify that its host and port point to the internal VNC service rather than a public address.
- Open a terminal or a small test application inside the desktop and check keyboard input, pointer input, clipboard behavior and window redraw.
- Close the browser tab and reopen it to verify that a new WebSocket session can be created after the first session ends.
Use browser developer tools only for diagnosis: a failed WebSocket upgrade, a 401 response, a certificate warning and a gateway 502 each indicate a different layer of the stack.

Security hardening checklist
- Keep VNC private: connect noVNC to the VNC service over the Docker network and publish no VNC port.
- Constrain bindings: use a loopback or private-interface host binding instead of an unrestricted publish.
- Require HTTPS: let Caddy manage a trusted certificate and redirect accidental HTTP access where appropriate.
- Authenticate at the edge: require a VPN, identity provider or Caddy authentication before the noVNC page is served.
- Protect the VNC password: generate a strong secret, store it outside the image and rotate it when staff or access policies change.
- Reduce container privilege: run as a non-root user when the image supports it, drop unnecessary Linux capabilities and mount only the data directories the application needs.
- Limit browser exposure: do not place an administrative GUI on a shared public hostname without access controls and logging.
- Update deliberately: pin image versions, test a replacement container privately, and keep Caddy and base-image packages current. A 2020 tutorial can still illustrate the architecture, but its image tags, Caddy syntax, browser behavior and package names require present-day verification.
Performance and usability tuning
A remote desktop is sensitive to both bandwidth and round-trip latency. Start with a moderate display size and increase it only after input and redraw feel reliable. Disable desktop animations and unnecessary compositing in a minimal session. Select the compression, color-depth and quality options supported by the VNC server and gateway; higher image quality consumes more bandwidth, while aggressive compression increases CPU work and can make text or gradients look worse.
Limit background applications that continuously repaint the screen. Video playback, rapidly updating dashboards and large image editors can generate substantially more framebuffer traffic than a form-based application. If users connect over mobile or high-latency links, a smaller window and lower frame rate usually produce a more responsive control surface than a large, full-desktop canvas.
Resource limits should be measured on the target host rather than copied from another deployment. Watch container CPU and memory usage while opening the application, loading a large document and resizing the browser window. Keep the GUI container, gateway and Caddy logs available long enough to correlate a slow session with a resource spike or network event.
Common failures and fixes
The noVNC page loads, but the desktop stays disconnected
- Check the gateway log for a failed connection to
gui:${VNC_PORT}. - Confirm that both containers are attached to
gui-netand that the service name matches the actual container or Compose service name. - Verify that TigerVNC is listening on the expected display and port, and that the gateway is using the corresponding port.
- Check the VNC password and any requirement for a path such as a display number or token in the gateway URL.
Caddy returns 502 Bad Gateway
- For host Caddy, test the loopback gateway with a local HTTP request and inspect whether the gateway container is running.
- For containerized Caddy, test name resolution and TCP reachability from the Caddy container to
novnc:${GATEWAY_PORT}. - Ensure the Caddy upstream uses the container’s internal port, not an unrelated host-published port.
The browser reports a WebSocket error
- Confirm that the browser is using the HTTPS hostname and that Caddy’s route reaches the noVNC HTTP endpoint.
- Check whether an additional proxy, firewall or identity layer strips the WebSocket upgrade.
- Review gateway logs for an invalid WebSocket path or a websockify process that is listening only on a different interface.
The desktop is black or the application never appears
- Inspect GUI-container logs for a missing display, Xauthority failure or desktop process that exited immediately.
- Start a simple window in the same display to distinguish a VNC problem from an application startup problem.
- Check shared-memory sizing and filesystem permissions if the application launches and then crashes while opening documents.
Input works, but the session is painfully slow
- Reduce display dimensions, color depth or VNC quality settings.
- Disable animations and close applications that continuously redraw.
- Measure latency between the browser and Caddy, then between Caddy and the gateway; do not assume the container network is the bottleneck.
- Check host CPU saturation, especially when compression is enabled.
Operations, updates and recovery
Keep services replaceable
Store application data, configuration and any required desktop profile in persistent volumes. Treat the GUI, gateway and Caddy containers as replaceable processes. Recreating a container should not erase user files or TLS certificates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use staged updates
- Pin the current image tags and record the VNC, noVNC, websockify and Caddy versions in deployment configuration.
- Start the new GUI image on a private test network and verify display startup, authentication and the application workflow.
- Test the gateway through Caddy, including a fresh browser connection and a reconnect after restarting websockify.
- Replace the production container during a planned window and retain the previous image tag for rollback.
Collect the right logs
Keep separate logs for the GUI/VNC container, websockify/noVNC and Caddy. A desktop crash, a failed TCP connection and a certificate or authentication rejection are different incidents; separate logs make the boundary visible. Avoid logging VNC passwords, session cookies or document contents.
Choosing among the main implementation options
| Decision | Prefer this when | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| noVNC plus websockify | The VNC server exposes only a TCP socket and browser access is required. | Run the HTML client and a WebSocket-to-TCP bridge, then proxy that gateway. |
| VNC server with native WebSocket support | The selected server reliably implements the WebSocket endpoint you need. | You may remove standalone websockify, but still need to serve the noVNC client and route its WebSocket path correctly. |
| Caddy on the host | You already centralize certificates and public routing on the host. | Bind the gateway to loopback or a private host address and proxy to it. |
| Caddy in Docker | You want the entire stack managed as one networked deployment. | Use Docker service-name routing and persist Caddy’s certificate data. |
| VPN or identity-only access | The GUI is for staff or administrators. | Keep the endpoint off the public internet and enforce access before noVNC. |
| Public HTTPS with authentication | External users must reach the application without a VPN. | Harden Caddy, monitor access and treat the route as an internet-facing application. |
The architecture is successful when each layer has one clear job: Docker isolates the services, the desktop and VNC server create the remote session, noVNC and websockify adapt it to a browser, and Caddy provides encrypted, authenticated delivery. Keeping the raw VNC socket private is the key boundary that prevents the browser gateway from becoming an unnecessary public VNC relay.
