First, separate two things: an item can remain listed in your Apple Account purchase history without being currently available to download or play in the storefront you are using. If you are moving countries or changing your Apple Account country or region, redownload the apps and media you may need before changing the storefront. Apple warns that some content may not be available in the new region.
The change applies to your Apple Account’s storefront, not to the iPhone’s hardware. On an iPhone, use Settings > your name > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region, then follow Apple’s prompts. A valid payment method and billing address for the destination may be requested, and unfinished balances, subscriptions, orders, rentals, refunds, or Family Sharing arrangements can block the change.
Purchase history is not the same as current availability
Your Apple Account records what you bought, but that record does not by itself prove that an app, song, film, TV show, book, or other item is still listed for download in the storefront you will use after a country or region change.
Apple’s iPhone guide makes the condition explicit when explaining app redownloads: find the app in purchase history and use the redownload control if it is still available in the App Store. Availability can therefore differ by title and destination region. Apple’s country-change guidance states: “Some types of content might not be available in your new country or region.” Apple Support’s country-or-region instructions do not promise that every previous purchase will remain downloadable after the change.

The safest sequence is:
- Identify the apps and media you may need.
- Download them to the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other device on which you expect to use them.
- Only then complete the Apple Account country or region change.
This does not guarantee future access to every title, but it avoids depending on a later redownload when the destination storefront may not list the item.
What a country or region change actually changes
The setting belongs to the Apple Account’s Media & Purchases storefront. It is not an iPhone-language, GPS, or hardware setting. Changing it changes the store associated with purchases and billing for that account; it does not turn the iPhone into a different model or erase its local files.
Catalog rights are title-specific. A film, book, app, or other item that appears in one country may not appear in another, and the supplied Apple documentation does not establish availability for any particular destination or title. Check the destination storefront for important items rather than assuming that a purchase record guarantees a listing.

Prepare the account before switching regions
Apple lists several conditions that must be resolved before the country or region can be changed. Work through them before opening the change screen.
Use the remaining Apple Account balance
Spend any balance left on the Apple Account. A remaining balance is one of Apple’s documented reasons a country or region change may not proceed. Check the balance and use it for an eligible purchase or other permitted account charge before trying again.
Cancel blocking subscriptions and wait for the term to end
Cancel subscriptions that prevent a region change, then wait until the current subscription period has ended. Cancelling an auto-renewal does not necessarily end the paid period immediately; Apple’s requirement is that the blocking subscription period finish.

Clear pending transactions and reservations
Wait for pending memberships, pre-orders, movie rentals, Season Passes, and store-credit refunds to finish. Apple notes that a pre-order may need to be cancelled. Do not start the region change while one of these transactions is still processing.

Apple may require a payment method that is valid in the new country or region and a billing address there. The requirement is conditional: Apple says these details may be requested, not that every account always needs them. Have the destination-region information available so the process does not stop halfway through.
Check Family Sharing status
A person in a Family Sharing group may be unable to change country or region while remaining in that group. Review the group arrangement before attempting the change. Leaving or changing a family setup can also affect access to purchases shared by other members, so do not treat Family Sharing as a way to bypass regional catalog rules.
Use this preparation checklist

Redownload apps and media before changing the storefront
Apple recommends downloading apps, music, films or movies, TV shows, and books to devices you may use to play or read them before changing country or region. Prioritize items that are difficult to replace, are needed offline, or are no longer easy to find by name.
Redownload an app from purchase history
On the iPhone, open the App Store and go to your account’s purchase history. Locate the app and tap the redownload control when it is offered. Apple’s wording is conditional: the app must still be available in the App Store. A purchase record without a current listing does not create a new download link.

Download media you expect to use
Before the switch, download the music, films, TV episodes, and books you expect to need on the devices that will play or display them. Apple’s guidance covers these categories collectively, but it does not promise that every title will remain available in a new storefront. Keep the device signed in to the purchasing Apple Account while completing downloads.
Make a practical priority list
- Apps required for work, travel, banking, authentication, or communication.
- Media needed during flights, travel, or periods without reliable internet.
- Books, films, shows, or music that you cannot easily identify again.
- Apps whose developers may have limited distribution by country.
Downloading first is risk management, not a guarantee that the item can later be updated, repurchased, or redownloaded in the destination storefront.
Change the country or region on your iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone path is in the Apple Account’s Media & Purchases settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top to open Apple Account settings.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Tap View Account. Sign in if Apple asks.
- Tap Country/Region.
- Select the new country or region.
- Review and accept the displayed terms and conditions.
- Enter the requested payment method and billing address for the destination, if Apple requires them.
- Finish the prompts and wait for the account’s storefront setting to update.
The labels above are Apple’s documented path; wording or placement can vary slightly with the iOS release and account state. The country or region is an Apple Account setting, so changing the iPhone’s language, time zone, or physical location is not a substitute.
Use Apple’s web account page instead
If you cannot use the iPhone settings flow, Apple documents a web route:
- Go to account.apple.com and sign in.
- Open Personal Information.
- Select Country/Region.
- Follow the displayed instructions, including any payment and billing information Apple requests.
Both routes change the country or region associated with the Apple Account. The web route is useful when you have access to a browser but not the relevant iPhone, while the iPhone route lets you begin from the device on which you have been downloading content.

What to do after the change
Check the destination storefront
Search for each important app or media title in the new storefront. Treat a successful search as a current-availability check, not as proof that every previous purchase transferred in the same way. The official guidance does not resolve availability for individual titles, so a title-by-title check is the only reliable answer for your destination.
Redownload only when the listing exists
If an app is missing from the destination App Store, its old purchase history entry does not establish that it can be downloaded there. If the listing is present, use the normal download or redownload control while signed in to the Apple Account that owns the purchase.
Keep already downloaded items available
Leave important apps and downloaded media on the devices where you need them. Avoid deleting a working copy until you have verified that the destination storefront offers a replacement and that the item opens as expected.

Family Sharing adds a second layer to the question because the item may belong to another family member rather than to your own purchase history. Apple says the family organizer can enable Purchase Sharing so members can share eligible apps, music, books, and other purchases. See Apple’s instructions for sharing apps and purchases with Family Sharing.
Purchase Sharing is not a blanket workaround for country-specific availability. A member may be unable to change country or region while in a Family Sharing group. Also, stopping Purchase Sharing ends access to purchases made by other members, although some subscriptions can remain shared. Before changing anything, determine whether you own the item yourself or access it through the family group.

- Is the app or media item in your own purchase history, or only in another member’s?
- Will disabling Purchase Sharing remove access to an item you have not bought yourself?
- Does the family arrangement itself prevent the country or region change?
Resolve those questions before leaving or changing the group. The Apple documentation does not say that joining another family restores a title that is unavailable in the destination storefront.

If the country or region change is blocked
Start with the blockers Apple specifically identifies rather than repeatedly submitting the same request.
“You still have a balance” or a similar account warning
Return to the Apple Account balance and spend what remains. A tiny leftover amount can still count as an outstanding balance, so verify that the account is clear before trying again.
A subscription is still active
Check every subscription associated with the account, cancel those that block the change, and wait until the paid period ends. The end date matters; an immediate cancellation request may leave the subscription active until that date.

A pre-order, rental, Season Pass, membership, or refund is pending
Wait for the transaction to complete. If Apple identifies a pre-order as the issue, its guidance says the pre-order may be cancelled. A store-credit refund or other pending activity must finish before the account can be moved.
Payment details are rejected
Review whether the payment method and billing address match the destination country or region and whether Apple is asking for information that is missing. The support guidance says a valid destination payment method may be required; it does not provide a universal exemption for every account.
You are in Family Sharing
Check whether the account is still part of a Family Sharing group. Family membership can prevent the change, and changing the group can remove access to other members’ shared purchases. Make a list of shared items before altering the arrangement.
Should you create a new Apple Account?
Apple mentions a separate option for someone who does not want to enter a payment method: wait until physically in the new country or region and create a new Apple Account. This is an account-creation option, not a documented way to transfer the purchase history from the old account.

The cited Apple instructions do not say that a new account inherits previous apps, music, films, TV shows, books, subscriptions, or other purchases. If retaining access to old purchases matters, redownload needed content to your existing devices first and understand that the new account and the old account are separate.
Choosing the safest route
