Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Open your site’s /wp-admin/ address (or /wp-login.php), sign in with your WordPress username or email and password, and you will reach the Dashboard—the control center for content, media, comments, users, design, plugins, tools, and settings. What you can see and change depends on your user role, active theme, WordPress version, and installed plugins.
Open the WordPress login screen
Use the standard administrative addresses
For a normal WordPress installation, append /wp-admin/ to the site’s domain, including the trailing slash where possible. For example, if the public site is https://example.com, visit https://example.com/wp-admin/. WordPress normally sends a logged-out visitor from that address to the login form automatically. The underlying standard login script is https://example.com/wp-login.php.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Enter the site’s HTTPS address followed by
/wp-admin/, or open the login script supplied by your host. - Type the username or email address associated with your WordPress account.
- Enter the password. Check the keyboard layout and Caps Lock if the login is rejected.
- Select Log In. A successful login opens the Dashboard; a user without permission may instead see a restricted view or an access-denied message.
When the usual path does not work
Some hosts, managed installations, or security configurations change the login route. A security plugin can also hide or rename the standard endpoint. If /wp-admin/ produces a 404 page, a host-provided login button or bookmark is more reliable than guessing another path. Ask the person or company that set up the site for the current administrative URL before changing files or database settings.
Use HTTPS whenever it is available. Do not submit a password on a look-alike domain, and avoid saving credentials in a shared or public browser.

Recover a forgotten password
- Open the login form and select Lost your password? (the wording can vary slightly by version or customization).
- Enter the account username or email address and submit the request.
- Follow the password-reset link delivered to the account email and choose a new, unique password.
A reset requires access to the account email or to an authorized hosting control panel. If the message does not arrive, check spam and verify that the address is the one stored on the site. An administrator or hosting provider may need to change the account details when the mailbox is unavailable; do not assume a reset succeeded without confirming that you can sign in.
What the Dashboard contains
The Administration Screen is the control interface for a WordPress installation. Its layout has four persistent areas: the toolbar (also called the header), the main navigation sidebar, the work area, and the footer. Individual screens and widgets vary with the user role, WordPress release, active theme, and plugins.
Toolbar or header
The toolbar runs across the top of the administrative interface. It normally links to the public site, your profile, quick-create actions, update or notification indicators, and contextual help. The New menu can provide shortcuts for creating a post, page, media item, or user, but its entries are role-dependent and may be extended by plugins.
Main navigation sidebar
The left menu is the quickest route to the major areas:
- Dashboard for the home screen and updates.
- Posts for chronological articles and their categories and tags.
- Media for uploaded images, video, audio, and documents.
- Pages for relatively static site content.
- Comments for moderation.
- Appearance for themes and theme-specific design controls.
- Plugins for extensions, when the account is allowed to manage them.
- Users for accounts and profiles, when the role has that capability.
- Tools for utilities such as import, export, and privacy functions.
- Settings for site identity, writing, reading, discussion, media, permalinks, and privacy options.
Hovering over a menu item reveals its submenu. A missing item is not necessarily an error: WordPress hides controls that the current role cannot use, and plugins can add or remove sections.
Work area and footer
The large central work area changes with the selected screen. It contains editors, lists, filters, forms, notices, and action buttons. The footer usually shows WordPress version information and links to documentation or feedback. Read notices at the top of a screen before dismissing them; they often explain a required update, a failed action, or a capability restriction.

Your user role controls what you can do
WordPress capabilities are assigned through roles. The following describes the usual distinction; a plugin can grant, remove, or rename capabilities, so the actual menu on a particular site is authoritative.
| Role | Typical access | Common limits |
|---|---|---|
| Administrator | Site-wide management, including users, settings, themes, plugins, and content. | Multisite networks can reserve network-level controls for a Super Admin rather than an individual site administrator. |
| Editor | Manage and publish site content, including posts and pages created by other authors, plus comments. | Normally does not control installation-wide settings, themes, or plugins. |
| Author | Create, edit, and publish the author’s own posts, subject to the site’s workflow. | Usually cannot manage other users, site settings, themes, or plugins. |
| Other or custom roles | Access defined by the capabilities assigned by an administrator or plugin. | The label alone does not guarantee a particular menu or action. |
For example, an Author may see a New Post shortcut but no user-management action. If a colleague needs one additional task, grant the narrow capability required rather than sharing an administrator password.
Create and manage posts
Start a post
- Choose Posts > Add New, or use New > Post in the toolbar.
- Enter a descriptive title and write the content in the block editor or the editor supplied by the site.
- Use the settings panel to assign categories and tags. Categories provide broader groupings; tags describe specific topics.
- Add a featured image or other media when the theme or editorial workflow calls for it.
- Select Save Draft while working, Preview to inspect the public presentation, or Publish when the post is ready.
A post is normally time-oriented and appears in the site’s chronological posts stream. Before publishing, check the permalink, author, visibility, and discussion settings shown by the editor. To publish later, use the date and time controls to schedule it; WordPress will place it in the scheduled list and the Activity widget can show it.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Edit, bulk-edit, or trash posts
Open Posts > All Posts to search, filter by status or category, and open an individual item. The list supports bulk actions such as changing categories, tags, authors, or status when your role allows them. Move an unwanted item to the Trash rather than deleting it immediately if you may need to restore it. The available bulk fields differ by WordPress version and plugins.
Create pages for stable site information
Choose Pages > Add New to create content such as About, Contact, privacy, or service-information pages. Pages are generally separate from the chronological posts stream. Add the title and content, set the page’s visibility and publishing status, preview it, and publish or schedule it when appropriate.
A theme may expose page attributes such as a parent page or template. These controls affect navigation and layout but are not available on every theme. Manage the page list from Pages > All Pages, where you can search, edit, change status, or trash items according to your role.
Upload and organize files in Media
Add files
- Go to Media > Add New, or select Add Media from a supported editor.
- Drop files into the upload area or choose them from the computer. The host’s file-size and type limits apply.
- Wait for each upload to finish before closing the screen. A failed upload may reflect a size limit, an unsupported type, a full storage allocation, or a server configuration problem.
Use the Media Library
Media > Library displays uploaded images, video, audio, and documents in a grid or list. Search by name, filter by media type or date, open an item to edit it, or select files for bulk deletion when your role permits.

When editing an attachment, supply a meaningful title and caption where useful. Add accurate alternative text that describes the image’s purpose for people using screen readers; do not stuff it with keywords or repeat a caption unnecessarily. The attachment screen can also expose a description, file URL, dimensions, and other metadata. Changing a title or caption does not necessarily rename the file already stored on the server.
Moderate comments
Open Comments to review discussion entries. Depending on your capabilities, you can approve a pending comment, reply, edit it, mark it as spam, or move it to the Trash. Use the list filters to separate pending, approved, spam, and trashed items. Treat links and attachments in comments as untrusted input, and investigate repeated spam through the site’s discussion settings or an approved moderation plugin rather than approving it in bulk.
Manage users and your profile
Edit your own profile
Select your name in the toolbar or open Users > Profile. You can usually change the display name, biography, interface preferences, email address, and password. Some sites disable email changes or add required profile fields. Save the profile and complete any email-confirmation step before signing out.
Add or change accounts
Users with the required capability can choose Users > Add New, enter an email address and username, assign the least-privileged suitable role, and send an invitation or set a password according to the site’s policy. Use Users > All Users to search accounts, edit profile information, or change roles. Never create a shared account for a team; individual accounts preserve accountability and make it possible to remove one person without disrupting everyone else.

Classic themes and the Customizer
With a classic theme, Appearance > Customize opens the Customizer. It commonly provides live controls for site identity, colors, typography, menus, widgets, homepage behavior, and theme-specific options. Select Publish only after reviewing the preview at different screen sizes. The exact panels are supplied by the active theme, so another classic theme may show a different set.
Block themes and the Site Editor
A block theme may replace the Customizer with Appearance > Editor (the Site Editor). From there, you can edit templates, template parts, styles, navigation, and blocks using the same visual block concepts used in posts and pages. A site running a classic theme may not show the Site Editor, while a block theme may hide or reduce Customizer controls.
Menus, widgets, header areas, and footer controls therefore depend on the active theme and WordPress version. If a documented menu is absent, confirm the theme type before troubleshooting the account.

Install and maintain plugins
Plugins extend WordPress and can add both public-site features and new administrative menus. If your account has permission, open Plugins > Add New to search the directory or upload an approved package, then install and activate it. Existing extensions can be activated, deactivated, updated, or removed from Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Use a plugin only when its purpose, source, and maintenance status are understood.
- Read the plugin’s required WordPress or PHP versions and configuration instructions before activation.
- Update through the Plugins screen and check the site afterward, especially when the extension affects login, caching, forms, or the editor.
- Deactivate an extension to test whether it causes a conflict; remove it only after confirming that its data can be retained or exported if needed.
A plugin may add a top-level sidebar item, a submenu under an existing item, a toolbar control, or a settings panel. That addition is expected behavior, not evidence that WordPress has changed its core navigation.
Use Tools and Settings deliberately
| Area | What it is for | Examples of decisions |
|---|---|---|
| Tools | Utilities that support site administration. | Import or export content, inspect available privacy tools, and run functions provided by installed extensions. |
| Settings > General | Basic site identity and address information. | Site title, tagline, administration email, and site or WordPress address where supported. |
| Settings > Writing | Default authoring behavior. | Default category and related publishing options supplied by the installation. |
| Settings > Reading | Homepage and feed behavior. | Whether the front page shows latest posts or a selected page. |
| Settings > Discussion | Comment and notification rules. | Moderation, approval, and avatar-related options. |
| Settings > Media | Image-size and media-library behavior. | Generated thumbnail, medium, and large image sizes. |
| Settings > Permalinks | URL structure for posts and pages. | Choose a readable structure, then save once after verifying the desired format. |
| Settings > Privacy | Privacy-policy administration. | Assign or review the page used for the site’s privacy information. |
Changing a site address, permalink structure, reading mode, or discussion policy can affect visitors and existing links. Record the old value and make one controlled change at a time so a problem can be traced.
Arrange the Dashboard for your workflow
Open the Screen Options tab at the top of a Dashboard screen to show or hide the panels available on that screen. Drag a widget by its title bar to rearrange the layout. Screen Options are user-specific in many installations, so changing them for your account does not necessarily change another administrator’s view.
The toolbar’s New menu duplicates several sidebar actions. Because it is capability-aware, two users can see different entries while working on the same site. Use the sidebar when you need the complete set of available screens and the toolbar when you want a quick shortcut.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Apply updates and protect the administrative area
Review the Updates screen
Open Dashboard > Updates regularly. The screen reports available WordPress core, theme, plugin, and translation updates. WordPress applies automatic maintenance and security updates in most installations, but administrators should still review the screen and confirm that components are current. Read release notes for major changes and check important workflows after updating.
Use layered account protection
- Use a strong, unique password for every WordPress account, especially administrators.
- Enable two-factor authentication when the site or its approved security tooling supports it.
- Keep the login and administration sessions on HTTPS.
- Give each person an individual account and the smallest role that permits the required work.
- Ask the host or security administrator whether additional protection surrounds the administrative route; the configuration is provider-specific, so there is no universal switch or path.
Updates and authentication reduce avoidable risk, but they do not replace a recovery plan. Know who controls the hosting account and the administrative email before an emergency occurs.

Troubleshoot common access problems
The login page is a 404 or the address redirects somewhere unexpected
Confirm the domain and HTTPS scheme, then try the host-provided login link. A customized or hidden login route may intentionally reject /wp-admin/ or /wp-login.php. If the site recently moved, verify that the domain points to the correct installation before changing WordPress files.
The password is rejected
Check the username or email, Caps Lock, keyboard layout, and browser autofill. Use the password-recovery link once; repeated guesses can trigger rate limits. If the reset email is inaccessible, contact an existing administrator or the host and be prepared to verify ownership.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe form keeps returning to itself or reports too many redirects
WordPress relies on browser cookies for an authenticated session. Clear cookies for the site, try a private window, and temporarily disable extensions that rewrite cookies or requests. A mismatch between the WordPress address and site address, an HTTPS proxy configuration, or a security plugin can also create a redirect loop; the person with hosting or server access should correct that configuration. The official WordPress Developer Handbook documents blocked cookies, login redirect loops, and “too many redirects” as distinct cases.
The login succeeds but the Dashboard is incomplete
Compare the account’s role with the task. Authors and Editors will not normally see every user, plugin, or settings screen. A plugin can also hide a menu or register its controls elsewhere. Ask an administrator to confirm the capability rather than using someone else’s credentials.
A page, post, or plugin change produces an error
Read the on-screen notice and note exactly what changed. If the failure began after activating or updating an extension, an authorized administrator can deactivate that extension and test again. For theme-related problems, switch only under an agreed maintenance plan because changing the active theme alters the public presentation. Keep the host’s support contact available when the error involves server limits, PHP, storage, or database connectivity.
A practical Dashboard routine
- Sign in through the verified HTTPS login route and confirm that the browser shows the expected domain.
- Check Dashboard > Updates and read any maintenance notices before editing content.
- Use Posts for dated, chronological material and Pages for stable site information.
- Upload files through Media, then add useful titles, captions, and alternative text before placing them in content.
- Review Comments according to the site’s moderation policy.
- Use individual user accounts and verify that each person has only the role needed for the job.
- Make appearance changes in the control supplied by the active theme—Customizer for many classic themes or Site Editor for block themes.
- Install or update plugins only after checking compatibility and knowing how to reverse the change.
- Record consequential changes to permalinks, addresses, privacy, reading, or discussion settings so they can be diagnosed later.
The Dashboard is not a separate website; it is the authenticated administration layer of the same WordPress installation. Once the login route, role, theme type, and plugin set are understood, the sidebar and its screen-specific controls provide a predictable path to nearly every routine management task.
