How do I access a blocked subreddit? First identify what “blocked” means in your case: the community may be private or restricted, a moderator may have banned your account from that subreddit, Reddit may have acted against your account, or Reddit may have banned the community itself. These situations have different remedies, and some have no user-side access route.
How to tell what is blocking access
Check the exact notice and whether the issue affects viewing, posting or commenting, one community, or your entire Reddit account. The distinction matters: moderators control membership and subreddit bans, while Reddit handles account-level actions and banned communities.

| A notice says you are banned from one subreddit | A moderator imposed a community-level ban. | Appeal through mod mail. |
| Reddit says your account is banned | This is an account-level action by Reddit. | Follow the appeal route in the notice or relevant Help Center guidance. |
| The community itself is marked as banned | Reddit banned the community. | There is no user-side access remedy while it remains banned. |
If the subreddit is private or restricted
Private communities
Reddit describes private communities as visible only to members approved by moderators. The moderators control the approved-user list, so ask them for access through whatever community contact route is available. A request does not guarantee approval or a response. Reddit explains community types in its guide to public, restricted, private, and premium-only communities and describes moderator control of membership in its approved users guidance.
Restricted communities
Restricted does not necessarily mean hidden: Reddit says anyone can view and vote in a restricted community, while posting or commenting may be limited to approved users. If you can read the subreddit but cannot participate, ask moderators whether they approve contributors. Viewing access and posting permission are separate.

If a moderator banned you from one subreddit
Use mod mail to explain briefly and specifically why you think the ban should be overturned. Reddit advises against contacting moderators through direct chat about a community ban. Its guidance on resolving moderator disputes describes the appeal route. If the appeal is denied or remains unresolved, Reddit suggests finding a similar community.
If Reddit banned your account
An account-level ban is different from a ban by a subreddit’s moderators. Follow the appeal instructions in Reddit’s account notice or the relevant Help Center page; the route depends on the type of account action. For bans involving spam, inauthentic activity, or ban evasion, see Reddit’s account-ban appeal guidance. Reddit’s account status overview explains account actions more broadly.

If Reddit banned the community
This is not a private subreddit or a personal ban. Reddit states: “Banned communities are inaccessible to all users.” While the community remains banned, a different account or access tool will not provide an official way in. See Reddit’s Banned Communities help page.

Reddit’s blocking feature concerns interactions between accounts; it is distinct from a community’s privacy setting, a moderator ban, and a sitewide account action. If the issue appears to involve another user rather than community access, consult Reddit’s guide to how blocking works.
