The best way to accept PayPal on WordPress depends on how you sell. Use the official WooCommerce PayPal Payments extension when you need a catalog, cart, shipping, tax, order management, or subscriptions. For a donation, service, or small number of fixed-price offers, use PayPal Payment Buttons or a Payment Link instead. Both routes can be configured without writing payment code, but the WooCommerce route requires compatible WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP versions and should be tested in PayPal Sandbox before taking live orders.

Choose the right PayPal setup first

WordPress does not have one universal PayPal switch. Your sales flow determines the right implementation:

Use case Recommended option What it provides What it does not provide
Several products, variable quantities, shipping, tax, coupons, customer accounts, or order records WooCommerce with PayPal Payments Store catalog, cart, checkout, order management, refunds, and multiple PayPal-supported payment methods It is more setup than a single button and still requires account, currency, tax, and shipping configuration
One or a few products, a service, event ticket, or donation PayPal Payment Buttons An embedded purchase action on a WordPress page or post No full inventory, cart, shipping workflow, or WooCommerce order management
You need to send a payment request by email, social media, or messaging PayPal Payment Link A shareable URL that opens a PayPal payment flow It is not an embedded product checkout on your site
An existing store still using PayPal Standard Plan a move to PayPal Payments A supported, current WooCommerce integration PayPal Standard is a legacy path and is hidden for new WooCommerce installations

PayPal describes a Payment Link as a URL shared through email, social media, or messages. A Buy Button is an embedded purchase action for a particular product or service. Select the tool that matches how customers will discover and pay rather than installing a complete store for a single transaction.

What you need before accepting a payment

For WooCommerce PayPal Payments

The WooCommerce startup documentation lists these minimums:

#1 Best Overall
Sale
Square Reader for contactless and chip (2nd Generation)
  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
  • Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.
  • No long-term commitments or contracts, no monthly fees- and with offline payments, keep taking payments for up to 24 hours.
  • Safely and securely accepts payments anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention, and payment-dispute management at no extra cost.
  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
  • WordPress 6.5 or newer.
  • WooCommerce 9.6 or newer.
  • PHP 7.4 or newer.
  • A PayPal business or personal account that can receive payments.

Check the versions under Dashboard > Updates and ask your host which PHP version is active. Update a staging copy or create a backup before changing WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, or payment extensions. A version that is technically supported can still conflict with another plugin, theme, firewall, caching layer, or host security rule, so keep a rollback available.

For standalone buttons

You need a WordPress site, a PayPal account, and the product or service details you will show to buyers. The official PayPal Payment Buttons plugin listing describes connecting API credentials, entering product details, and publishing a button without WooCommerce. This route is appropriate when you do not need inventory, a cart, shipping calculations, or WooCommerce order records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Payment Link

Create the link in PayPal and place it where customers will see it: an email, social post, message, QR code, or a normal WordPress link or button. Because the link is the checkout entry point, verify the amount, currency, description, and destination before distributing it.

Install and configure WooCommerce PayPal Payments

Use this route for a real store or any site where payment is part of a broader order process.

1. Confirm compatibility and prepare the account

  1. Confirm WordPress 6.5+, WooCommerce 9.6+, and PHP 7.4+.
  2. Confirm that the PayPal account is able to receive merchant payments. Use a business account when your business structure and PayPal region require one; PayPal’s WooCommerce guide also lists a personal account as a possible prerequisite.
  3. Back up the site and, if available, clone it to staging. Record your current WooCommerce payment settings so you can restore them.

2. Install the official extension

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for WooCommerce PayPal Payments.
  3. Choose the official extension, select Install Now, and then select Activate.

Use the plugin’s listing and your WordPress update screen to verify that you selected the maintained extension, not an unrelated PayPal form or button plugin.

Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

3. Start the PayPal connection wizard

  1. Open WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
  2. Select PayPal.
  3. Select Set Up or Complete setup, depending on the label shown by your version.
  4. Select Activate PayPal Payments and follow the onboarding wizard.
  5. Sign in to the PayPal account that should receive the money and approve the connection requested by the wizard.

The wizard connects the merchant account rather than asking you to paste arbitrary code into a theme file. If the connection stops, check that pop-ups and third-party cookies are not being blocked for the setup window, then retry from the Payments screen. Do not copy credentials into a public post, theme template, or support ticket.

4. Select payment methods deliberately

After activation, review the methods exposed by your account and market. The documented PayPal Payments capabilities include PayPal, Pay Later, Venmo in the United States, advanced card fields, and, where enabled, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The list is not universal: country, currency, merchant approval, account status, device, and configuration determine what appears to you and to a customer.

  • PayPal: Customers sign in to PayPal or use the checkout options PayPal makes available to them.
  • Pay Later: Availability and customer eligibility are determined by PayPal and the relevant market; do not advertise it as universally available.
  • Venmo: The documented availability is for the U.S.; it may not appear for merchants or buyers elsewhere.
  • Advanced card fields: A card checkout can appear on your site when the account and region support it, reducing the need for a PayPal redirect for some buyers.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: These wallets appear only where PayPal has enabled them for the account and checkout context.

5. Configure the store around the payment

Before switching on live checkout, review the WooCommerce settings that change the amount a customer pays or the state of an order:

  • Store currency and the currencies your PayPal account can settle.
  • Shipping zones, rates, and whether shipping is required for each product.
  • Tax calculation and the tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices shown to customers.
  • Order status after an approved, pending, failed, or refunded PayPal transaction.
  • Refund permissions and the staff roles allowed to issue a refund.
  • Customer and admin email notifications, including the receipt, payment confirmation, and refund messages.

These are implementation checks rather than automatic guarantees from the extension. Place a controlled order and inspect the resulting order, email, stock movement, and refund record before accepting a real customer payment.

Test safely with PayPal Sandbox

PayPal’s onboarding documentation recommends Sandbox testing. Use a separate Sandbox buyer account and merchant account so your test does not charge a real card or create a real customer order.

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
  1. Open the PayPal developer dashboard and create or select Sandbox accounts appropriate for the test.
  2. Connect the WooCommerce extension to the Sandbox merchant account through its test or Sandbox setting, following the current onboarding prompts.
  3. Visit the storefront in a private browser window and place an order as a test buyer. Test both the PayPal sign-in path and any card or wallet method that your account exposes.
  4. Check the WooCommerce order screen: amount, currency, shipping, tax, customer email, order status, and stock reduction should match the test order.
  5. Test a cancellation or failed payment and confirm that the order is not incorrectly marked paid.
  6. Test a refund from the permitted WooCommerce or PayPal workflow and verify the refund status and notification.
  7. Review logs only for troubleshooting, and remove test credentials before connecting the live account.
  8. Reconnect or switch the extension to live credentials only after the complete test passes.

A Sandbox success does not prove that every live payment method will be available. It confirms that your configured checkout, notifications, status changes, and refund path behave as expected in the test environment.

Add a PayPal Payment Button without WooCommerce

For a fixed-price service, donation, digital item, or small catalog, a standalone button avoids the overhead of a store.

Using the PayPal block in the WordPress editor

  1. Edit the page or post where the payment action should appear.
  2. Type /PayPal in the block editor, or select the PayPal block from the block inserter.
  3. Choose the Payment Buttons option and follow the block’s connection prompts.
  4. Enter the product or service name, price, currency, and any options the block requests.
  5. Preview the page on desktop and mobile, then publish it.

PayPal’s official WordPress guidance documents this block-based insertion method. Labels and fields can change as the plugin is updated, so use the controls shown in your installed version.

Using the PayPal Payment Buttons plugin

  1. Install and activate the official PayPal Payment Buttons plugin from Plugins > Add New.
  2. Open the plugin’s settings and connect the requested API credentials.
  3. Create a button with the product or service description, amount, currency, and any quantity or variation settings provided.
  4. Copy or insert the generated button into the target page, post, or widget.
  5. Complete a Sandbox purchase before publishing the live button.

This route does not create WooCommerce inventory, shipping, tax, or order-management features. Keep your own fulfillment and record-keeping process if you use a standalone button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a PayPal Payment Link instead of an embedded button

A Payment Link is the simplest option when customers already arrive from a message, email, social profile, invoice, or event page. In WordPress, add the URL to a normal text link, call-to-action button, navigation item, or QR-code destination. A link can also be useful when you want one payment destination shared across several channels.

Square Reader for magstripe (with Lightning connector)
  • Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

Use an embedded Buy Button when the product context belongs on your website and the visitor should start payment directly from that product or service page. Use a Payment Link when distribution is the main requirement. In either case, confirm the amount and currency in PayPal before publishing; a WordPress button or hyperlink does not independently validate your commercial terms.

Subscriptions and recurring payments

PayPal Payments is designed to work with WooCommerce Blocks and can support subscriptions when the merchant account is approved for the required reference transactions and vaulting is enabled. Approval is account-specific and may depend on region and PayPal review. Verify current eligibility in the connected account before promising recurring billing to customers.

A standalone one-time button or Payment Link should not be presented as a subscription system unless the PayPal interface explicitly provides the recurring-payment option for your account and you have tested renewal, cancellation, failed-payment, and refund behavior.

What to do about PayPal Standard

WooCommerce hides PayPal Standard for new installations from WooCommerce 5.5 and strongly encourages merchants using it to move to the PayPal Payments extension. PayPal Standard redirects customers to PayPal to finish payment and remains mainly relevant to existing stores that have not migrated.

If an older store still relies on Standard, document the current checkout and refund behavior, create a backup or staging copy, install PayPal Payments, and test the migration before changing the live gateway. Do not assume that a legacy configuration carries forward unchanged; recheck payment methods, order statuses, webhooks or account connections, and customer emails.

Common problems and practical fixes

The PayPal option is missing from WooCommerce

  • Confirm the extension is activated and revisit WooCommerce > Settings > Payments.
  • Check that WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP meet the documented minimums.
  • Look for a failed connection notice and rerun Set Up or Complete setup.
  • Temporarily test with caching, security, or optimization features excluded from the checkout path; restore them one at a time after identifying a conflict.

A payment method appears in the dashboard but not at checkout

Check country, currency, buyer location, device, account approval, and whether the method was enabled in the PayPal Payments settings. Venmo is documented for the U.S.; Pay Later and wallet methods also depend on market and eligibility.

The order is paid in PayPal but pending in WooCommerce

Compare the PayPal transaction status with the WooCommerce order notes and confirm that the live or Sandbox account is the one connected to the site. A pending state can reflect a delayed authorization, an account review, a currency issue, or a notification problem. Do not manually mark the order paid until you have verified the transaction in PayPal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customers cannot complete checkout

  • Check that the product is purchasable and that shipping zones cover the buyer’s address.
  • Confirm that the currency and amount are accepted by the connected PayPal account.
  • Test in a clean browser with pop-ups, cookies, JavaScript, and redirects allowed for the checkout.
  • Review the browser console and WooCommerce logs for a specific extension or theme error, then test with a default theme and only the payment extension active on staging.

A refund or email is missing

Check the order’s refund record, the PayPal transaction, WooCommerce email settings, and spam filtering. Refund permissions can differ by staff role. If the refund exists in PayPal but not in WooCommerce, reconcile the order manually and investigate the connection or notification log before issuing a second refund.

Fees, compliance, and customer expectations

There is no single PayPal fee that applies to every WordPress merchant. Fees vary by country, payment type, currency conversion, and merchant agreement. Use the PayPal pricing page for the merchant’s region and state the applicable terms in your own checkout or policies; do not copy a percentage from another country or an old plan.

Publish accurate product descriptions, refund terms, delivery timing, contact details, and any tax or shipping charges before the customer reaches PayPal. Keep payment credentials out of WordPress content and limit administrator access to staff who need it. Follow PayPal’s current seller, acceptable-use, dispute, and data-handling requirements for your region.

PayPal reports that merchants experience a 28% average increase in sales after implementing PayPal Payment Buttons. This is PayPal’s 2025 marketing statistic, not a guaranteed result or an independent universal benchmark. Treat it as a claim about reported average outcomes rather than a forecast for your site.

Decision checklist

  • Choose WooCommerce PayPal Payments if you need a catalog, cart, shipping, tax, order records, refunds, or a path to supported subscriptions.
  • Choose a Payment Button if you sell a few fixed-price items, services, tickets, or donations and do not need store management.
  • Choose a Payment Link if the payment request will be distributed mainly through email, social media, messaging, or a QR code.
  • Check versions first: WordPress 6.5+, WooCommerce 9.6+, and PHP 7.4+ for the documented WooCommerce route.
  • Test in Sandbox before connecting live credentials, including success, failure, cancellation, email, stock, order-status, and refund paths.
  • Verify availability for cards, Venmo, Pay Later, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and recurring billing in the merchant’s country and account.
  • Plan migration if the store still uses PayPal Standard, because it is a legacy integration for existing installations.
