To 100% a game safely, define exactly what “100%” includes, inspect the achievement or trophy list for your specific platform and edition, identify every irreversible requirement, and choose a route that matches your tolerance for spoilers and replay. Keep the platform list open, track route-sensitive objectives separately, and never assume that a post-game cleanup period exists unless current guidance for that title confirms it.
What “100%” means before you start
There is no universal definition of a complete game. One player may mean every achievement on Steam or Xbox, every trophy on PlayStation, or a platinum trophy. Another may mean the in-game completion percentage, all collectibles, every ending, or achievements from the base game plus downloadable content (DLC).
Write your target down before choosing a route. A useful target statement looks like this: “All base-game platform achievements on PlayStation, excluding DLC,” or “Every achievement, including listed DLC, on the current PC edition.” This prevents a common late-run problem: discovering that a guide covered the base game while your platform list also includes expansion achievements.

- Platform scope: Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, or another service can have different lists, unlock conditions, or DLC packaging.
- Edition scope: standard, deluxe, remastered, complete, and ultimate editions may bundle different content.
- Content scope: decide whether expansions, bonus episodes, seasonal content, and multiplayer achievements count.
- Completion type: distinguish platform achievements from an in-game percentage or save-file statistic.
Do not infer a cross-game standard from one title. Achievement lists and post-story behavior are game- and edition-specific.

Audit the exact game, platform, and edition
Before launching the first save, open the platform’s own achievement or trophy list and a current, game-specific roadmap. The platform list is the authoritative record of what your account must unlock; a roadmap explains ordering, prerequisites, and missable conditions.
Check the roadmap’s currency
Look for the guide’s update date and whether it explicitly matches your platform, edition, region, and installed updates. A community-maintained missable list is useful for discovery, but labels and counts can change. Cross-check every warning against current title-specific guidance rather than treating a curator entry as a guarantee.
Mark the six risk categories
- Branching choices: decisions that lock a faction, quest, relationship, dialogue path, or ending.
- One-time encounters: enemies, non-player characters, missions, or events that disappear after a trigger.
- Collectibles: items that cannot be revisited, reset when a chapter ends, or are counted only during a particular sequence.
- Online or multiplayer requirements: achievements that depend on servers, matchmaking, another player, or a separate account.
- Time-limited requirements: seasonal events, real-time windows, limited missions, or deadlines inside the game.
- Difficulty and mode rules: achievements that require a named difficulty, permadeath, New Game Plus, a specific mode, or a clean run without changing settings.
Also note multiple endings, chapter select, free-roam access, manual-save behavior, and whether achievements can be earned in a later playthrough.

Classify achievements by missability
A practical classification makes the roadmap usable without turning every minute into a checklist.
Hard missables
These require an action that cannot be repeated after a point of no return: choosing one branch over another, failing to rescue a character, spending a unique resource, or skipping a one-time encounter. Put the trigger and the required action in your notes before reaching it.
Soft missables
These are technically recoverable, but only through chapter replay, a second save, New Game Plus, or a new run. Treat them as missables when estimating time, because the recovery may be expensive even if the game does not permanently lock the achievement.

Cleanup achievements
These can normally be earned after the story, through free roam, chapter select, a replayable activity, or a separate mode. Do not move an item into this category merely because a forum post says the game has an endgame. Confirm the behavior for your edition and current version.
External-risk achievements
Online, timed, or multiplayer achievements may remain theoretically obtainable but practically unavailable if servers close, a seasonal event ends, or the player population falls. Verify current availability before committing to a 100% route.
Choose a route that fits your spoiler tolerance
There are three sensible approaches. None is universally correct; the right choice depends on how costly a missed requirement would be to you.

Compare the options using six questions: How likely is an irreversible miss? How much story information will the guide reveal? How much replay time can you tolerate? Does the route depend on online, timed, or multiplayer content? Does the guide match your platform and edition? Does it include the DLC you intend to complete?
Reader discussions commonly divide between blind-first players and guide-led players. That disagreement is about priorities, not a factual dispute. If a single 30-second decision can invalidate a 40-hour run, a short spoiler-light note may be a reasonable compromise. If the game has many interlocking conditions, a planned guided run can be less frustrating than repeated replays.

Use two records rather than one giant checklist.
Record 1: the platform list
Keep the official achievement or trophy interface available. It shows what has actually unlocked and exposes hidden entries once they are revealed by the platform. Mark an item complete only after the platform confirms the unlock; an in-game notification can appear before synchronization finishes.

Record 2: the route checklist
Track conditions the platform list cannot explain: “speak to this character before leaving,” “make a separate save before the choice,” “complete this event during chapter three,” or “return after the final mission.” Add the chapter, location, trigger, required action, and recovery method.
Keep the checklist limited to decisions that affect completion. A giant list of every collectible can bury the few irreversible actions that matter most. If a guide offers a low-spoiler mode, use its labels or abbreviations consistently, and hide optional story explanations until you need them.
Run the first playthrough safely
- Make a pre-run save plan. Decide where manual saves are allowed and how many rotating slots you will keep. Saving before a decision is useful only if the game preserves the relevant state after reload.
- Follow the roadmap’s warning points. Read the minimum text needed for the current objective. Stop before optional paragraphs that reveal character outcomes or later plot details.
- At every point of no return, pause. Compare your current chapter, quest state, inventory, and completed route items with the checklist before entering the trigger.
- Separate branches deliberately. If two achievements require opposing choices, create the recommended save, complete one branch, confirm the unlock, then reload only if the guide and game behavior support that method.
- Confirm state after reload. Some games record decisions immediately, disable achievements after a mode change, or require a full mission completion. Never assume that reloading restored every prerequisite.
- Synchronize and verify. Allow the platform to register the achievement before deleting a save or moving to the next branch.
Use the smallest amount of guide information that protects the route. A note such as “save before the council vote; choose option A for achievement X” is less spoiler-heavy than reading a full ending guide.

Branching achievements are often the most expensive to repair. Before a major decision, identify whether the game offers chapter select, post-ending free roam, New Game Plus, or only a full replay.
When one save can cover both branches
A save-and-reload strategy can work when the achievement unlocks immediately after the choice or short sequence and the game does not permanently alter the world before the unlock. Keep the original save untouched, complete the first branch, verify the achievement, and reload the original only after synchronization.
When separate runs are safer
Plan separate runs when the choice changes dozens of later missions, when achievements unlock only after a long ending sequence, when the game marks the save permanently, or when the guide warns that reloads are unreliable. A clean second run is often safer than trying to force two incompatible conditions into one file.

Multiple endings
List the ending requirements before the final act, not after reaching it. Some endings depend on hidden relationship values, optional quests, difficulty, or an earlier choice that appears unrelated. Record those prerequisites as route items and identify the earliest backup save that still allows correction.
Do not assume post-game cleanup
Post-game cleanup varies by game and edition. Some titles return you to the world after the final mission; others place you before the finale, lock completed chapters, or require a fresh run. A guide should state exactly what happens after the credits.
Remedy Entertainment’s official CONTROL Ultimate Edition guide provides a documented example: “There are absolutely no missable trophies in the Ultimate Edition; you can return to the Oldest House after the credits roll to clean up any remaining tasks.” The same guide says the achievement and trophy lists are identical across PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. Those statements apply to that edition of CONTROL; they are not a rule for other games.
When the title does support cleanup, use the platform list to identify what remains and the guide’s cleanup section to find locations or prerequisites. When it does not, stop before the final trigger and finish all route-sensitive objectives first.

DLC can change what “100%” requires. Confirm whether expansion achievements appear in the same platform list, whether the roadmap includes them, and whether the complete or ultimate edition bundles content that the standard edition does not.

- Check whether an update changed mission order, collectible locations, or achievement conditions.
- Confirm that DLC achievements are obtainable in your region and current version.
- Do not assume a remaster preserves the original achievement list or missable behavior.
For example, a community curator may list one reported missable achievement for Metro 2033 Redux, while Graveyard Keeper has been listed with multiple missables across the base game and named DLC. These examples demonstrate variation between titles; they do not establish how common missables are across games.

Check online, timed, and multiplayer dependencies first
An achievement that requires another player or a live service deserves an availability check before you begin. Look for current server status, matchmaking activity, event dates, account requirements, and any region restrictions. If the requirement is discontinued, a normal single-player route cannot produce 100% completion.
Timed in-game objectives need the same treatment. Record the deadline, the event trigger, and whether changing the system clock is supported or prohibited. Avoid relying on an old workaround unless current title-specific guidance confirms it still works after updates.
What to do when an achievement does not unlock
First, identify whether the condition was actually complete
Read the exact platform description and compare it with the guide’s condition. “Complete all missions” may exclude tutorials, DLC, or repeatable tasks; “collect every item” may require turning items in rather than merely picking them up.

Return to the platform list, wait for the account to synchronize, and restart the game only after preserving the relevant save. A delayed notification is different from a failed condition.
Test a documented recovery
Use chapter select, a backup save, or a replay only when the current guide confirms that method. If the objective was genuinely missable and no recovery exists, record the earliest safe restart point rather than continuing to make the same run harder to repair.
Check edition and DLC scope
A guide may describe a base-game achievement while your list includes an expansion, or vice versa. Confirm the title, platform, edition, and update before treating the discrepancy as a bug.
How much evidence exists about missables?
There is no representative statistic establishing how often games contain missable achievements or how frequently players complete 100% runs successfully. Curator counts are title-specific examples, not a population-level rate. Treat any broad claim such as “most games have missables” as unverified unless it cites a defined dataset and method.
