A tintype is a photograph made directly on a dark-coated iron plate. To create one, a photographer coats the plate with collodion, sensitizes it in a silver-nitrate bath, exposes it in a camera while the coating is still wet, then develops, fixes, washes, dries, and varnishes it. The plate is the finished image—not a negative used to make a separate paper print. That tightly timed sequence is what makes tintype photography a wet-plate process.

What a tintype is—and what it is not

A tintype is a direct-positive photograph on a thin iron plate with a dark japanned or lacquered surface. “Tin” is the traditional name, but iron is the support identified in institutional descriptions from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and the National Park Service. The image is formed on that prepared surface, so a tintype is neither a paper print nor a photograph made on a literal sheet of tin.

The distinction matters because the support is part of the finished object. The dark plate and developed silver image together give the tintype its direct-positive appearance; there is no separate negative-and-print stage in the process described by the Library of Congress. Tintypes became a comparatively inexpensive, portable keepsake format in the nineteenth century. The Smithsonian describes them as cheaper and more durable than daguerreotypes or ambrotypes, though that broad historical comparison should not be read as a guarantee about the condition of every surviving plate.

How the wet-plate chemistry creates an image

The process uses a sequence of coatings and chemical treatments. Collodion carries light-sensitive halide salts onto the plate, and a silver-nitrate bath sensitizes that coating. After exposure, development and fixing turn the exposed plate into a stable image. Institutional accounts describe the sequence, but they do not establish one universal formula or set of quantities: historical recipes and practices should not be inferred from a list of chemicals alone.

Collodion carries the halide salts

The photographer pours a thin layer of collodion over the dark-coated iron. Collodion is a cellulose-nitrate solution; photographic collodion contains soluble halide salts. Iodide is named in the process descriptions, and some accounts also identify bromide. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s overview of photographic processes describes collodion as the coating used in wet-plate photography, while the Science Museum Group’s historical wet-plate chemical set includes iodised collodion.

Silver nitrate makes the coating light-sensitive

Once the collodion is on the plate, the photographer immerses it in a silver-nitrate bath. This creates the light-sensitive silver-halide layer in the collodion. The plate must be handled in suitable darkroom conditions during sensitizing and subsequent handling. Both the National Archives’ account of wet collodion and the V&A describe this sensitizing step.

These chemicals have different jobs: the collodion coating holds the halides on the support, while the silver-nitrate bath sensitizes the coating. The exposed plate is then developed and fixed. Historical collections identify iron solution and “hypo” among wet-plate process chemicals, but those names do not establish a complete, transferable recipe or the proportions used in a particular photographer’s practice.

How a tintype is made, step by step

  1. Prepare the plate. Start with a thin iron plate that has a dark japanned or lacquered surface. The photographer needs a plate holder that fits the plate and a camera that can use that holder; a large-format view camera is one plausible setup, not a requirement established for every modern workflow.
  2. Pour on collodion. The photographer coats the plate with a thin layer of collodion containing soluble halide salts. The coating must be ready for sensitizing and exposure as part of the wet-plate sequence.
  3. Sensitize in silver nitrate. The coated plate is immersed in a silver-nitrate bath to form the light-sensitive layer. From this point, handling and timing are tied to the plate’s wet state.
  4. Load and expose the wet plate. The sensitized plate is placed in a holder and exposed in the camera before the collodion dries. A mobile darkroom is a defining practical constraint: sensitizing, loading, exposure, and processing need to be coordinated rather than separated by the convenience of a dry, pre-prepared plate.
  5. Develop and fix promptly. After exposure, the plate is developed and fixed before it dries. The National Archives and V&A describe the rapid wet-plate sequence, but exact chemical recipes are not uniform in the sources cited here.
  6. Wash, dry, and varnish. Following development and fixing, the plate is washed and dried. Varnish is applied as the final layer to protect the image. The Library of Congress notes that varnish helps stabilize the image and guard it from oxidation.

The order is consequential: the plate is prepared and sensitized, exposed while wet, and processed before it dries. This is not a case where a photographer can expose a coated plate and leave development for a later session. The National Archives and V&A both emphasize the close timing required by wet collodion.

Why the plate has to stay wet

“Wet plate” describes a practical condition of the process, not merely a traditional label. The sensitized collodion plate must be exposed before the coating dries, and the exposed plate must be developed and fixed promptly. Drying interrupts the workflow the process depends on, so the photographer has to bring preparation and processing close to the camera.

That requirement explains the mobile-darkroom association. In a portable portrait setting, the photographer needed access to the equipment and process materials required to prepare and process the plate near the time and place of exposure. The sources establish this timing constraint; they do not supply a single universal drying-time figure. It would therefore be misleading to promise a fixed number of minutes that applies to every plate, environment, or recipe.

For a modern experimenter, the same constraint affects the setup decision. Camera format alone does not determine compatibility: the plate holder must fit the plate, and the camera must accept that holder. A large-format view camera can be a possible tool, but it should not be treated as mandatory for every contemporary tintype workflow.

How the processed plate becomes a finished portrait

Development and fixing are not the end of the object’s preparation. After those steps, the plate is washed and dried, then varnished. The varnish is the final protective layer; according to the Library of Congress’s 2024 discussion of tintypes, it helps stabilize the image and protect it from oxidation. Thus, when someone asks how a tintype is “finished,” the answer includes both the chemical processing that forms the image and the varnish that protects it.

Because the plate itself is the image-bearing support, a tintype is a singular physical object rather than one print from a negative that could generate a run of identical prints. This direct-positive format is one reason the plate’s surface and condition matter to the finished portrait. The dark-coated iron is not just a temporary carrier for a later print; it remains with the image.

How tintypes compare with ambrotypes and daguerreotypes

The most reliable way to distinguish these neighboring historic processes is to look at the image support and finished object. Their names can be confused because all are early photographic formats, but their supports differ.

Process Image support What defines the finished object
Tintype Collodion on dark-coated iron A direct-positive image on the iron plate itself
Ambrotype Collodion on glass A glass plate process related to tintype through its use of collodion
Daguerreotype Polished metal plate A photograph formed on a polished metal support

The support descriptions are consistent with the Smithsonian, National Park Service, and Metropolitan Museum of Art’s overview of photographic processes. Cost, durability, appearance, and workflow are useful additional points of comparison, but they varied among formats and individual objects. In particular, the Smithsonian’s statement that tintypes were cheaper and more durable than daguerreotypes or ambrotypes is a broad historical comparison, not a complete ranking of every example.

When tintypes were used—and why the process changed

Frederick Scott Archer published the wet-collodion process in 1851, according to the National Archives. The Smithsonian places the rise of tintype popularity in the mid-1850s and says production continued into the early twentieth century. Tintypes served as portable keepsakes, including during the Civil War era.

Wet collodion did not disappear on one universal date. The National Archives says gelatin dry plates largely replaced it in the 1880s. These dates describe broad historical periods: they do not mean every photographer adopted a new process in the same year, or that tintype production ended as soon as dry plates became common.

The practical contrast is clear from the workflow. Wet collodion links preparation, sensitizing, exposure, and development to a plate that must remain wet. Gelatin dry plates eventually displaced that approach in broad use, but the sources cited here do not provide a detailed technical comparison of all dry-plate formulations or a precise year-by-year adoption curve.

What to know before trying wet-plate photography

Wet-plate tintype making is a specialized photographic process, not simply a matter of putting a metal sheet in a camera. The required sequence combines a dark-coated iron support, collodion, silver-nitrate sensitizing, exposure before drying, prompt development and fixing, and a final varnish. A historical chemical inventory can show the kinds of materials associated with the process, but it is not a safe or complete instruction manual for mixing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check camera and holder compatibility. The plate size and holder must match the camera. A large-format view camera is one possible arrangement, but no single camera format is established as universal.
  • Plan the workflow around wet timing. The plate must move from sensitizing to exposure and processing while it is still wet. A setup that separates those tasks widely in time does not fit the process described by the National Archives and V&A.
  • Do not infer a recipe from chemical names. Sources identify materials such as iodised collodion, silver nitrate, iron solution, and hypo, but they do not establish one universally applicable formula, quantities, or handling protocol.
  • Expect the varnish to be part of completion. The processed plate is washed and dried before varnish is applied as image protection; the varnish is not an optional paper-print step.

These constraints make an instructional workshop a reasonable learning route for someone who wants hands-on practice, but availability of any particular workshop or supplier is not established here. For camera experimentation, verify the plate holder’s dimensions and camera compatibility rather than assuming a format from the label “large format” alone.
