Third-party games reach Nintendo Switch through a platform-specific development and release process—not a simple export. A studio first obtains authorized Nintendo developer resources, then adapts and profiles its existing game for Switch, makes project-specific performance and content decisions, and prepares the finished game for rating, Nintendo review, and release. The exact work depends on the game, its engine, and its technical demands; Bulkhead Interactive’s port of The Turing Test illustrates one Unreal Engine project, not a universal recipe.
What a Switch port involves
A port is an adaptation of a game made for one platform so it can run and be released on another. The studio has to work with the game’s existing code, assets, engine, rendering, input, memory use, and loading behavior, then test and tune the result on the target platform. Even when a game uses a cross-platform engine, that does not mean its existing build will behave or look the same on Switch.
The work has two connected sides. On the technical side, developers adapt the project and investigate performance issues. On the release side, the publisher prepares the content and materials required to submit and present the game. A viable port has to meet both needs: a build that works for the target and a release package that can pass through the platform’s publishing process.
For studios, this means planning a port as a distinct project with its own assessment, tuning, and release steps. For players wondering why two ports can differ in appearance or performance, it means the source game alone does not determine the result. Engine changes, scene demands, effects, assets, and the team’s performance target all shape the version that reaches the console.

How a studio gets authorized to develop for Switch
Nintendo’s public developer process begins with account registration. Individuals as well as companies can register. Developers accept the portal’s non-disclosure agreement and terms to reach software development kits and support, and they must make a separate application for Switch information. In other words, registering an account does not by itself make every Switch resource publicly available.
Engine providers can impose an additional access step. Epic says developers need approved Nintendo Switch developer status and the necessary permissions to access its Switch-specific Unreal Engine documentation. The relevant materials are provided through a private Switch Development forum. As a result, public engine tutorials cannot fully describe the authorized console workflow; access to the platform and the relevant documentation is controlled.
This access stage is a practical prerequisite, not a technical optimization. A studio needs the authorized resources to build and validate for the platform, and it needs to understand the relevant engine and platform workflow before it can make informed estimates about adaptation. A game’s presence in a cross-platform engine does not remove this requirement.
How teams assess the existing game
Once it has platform access, the team examines the project before deciding what to change. The assessment includes the engine version, rendering behavior, code, assets, input, memory use, loading, and platform-specific behavior. These areas interact: a rendering change can affect visual appearance, while assets and loading behavior may contribute to runtime or game-thread problems.
The original project’s state matters. A port that begins from a version of an engine different from the one used by the original game may require more than a routine rebuild. In Bulkhead Interactive’s work on The Turing Test, moving the game to a newer Unreal Engine version was mostly straightforward at the code level, but changes in rendering affected the game’s look. The team then worked on color grading, specularity, and reflections to bring the appearance closer to what it wanted for the Switch version.

That example is useful because it separates code migration from visual parity. Code that moves successfully does not guarantee that lighting, materials, or reflections will produce the same image. The port team has to judge the actual result in the target build, identify which differences matter to the game, and decide whether to adjust the project or accept a deliberate visual tradeoff.
How profiling guides performance work
After the project is running on the target, profiling helps the team locate the problems that matter most. Instead of applying a generic list of “Switch optimizations,” developers use the behavior of their own game to find costly work and decide what to change. A fix that helps one title may have no value—or a different cost—in another.
In its port of The Turing Test, Bulkhead reported game-thread spikes associated with streaming and garbage collection. The team described several responses: tuning streaming, reducing expensive Blueprint operations and unnecessary actor ticks, replacing some skeletal meshes with static meshes, removing collisions that were not needed, and adjusting effects and materials after profiling.
Those changes illustrate different kinds of intervention. Some reduce work performed during play; others simplify or alter content. Replacing a skeletal mesh, for example, is not a universal instruction to remove animation. Bulkhead made project-specific changes in response to its findings. Similarly, removing a collision is appropriate only if that collision is unnecessary for the game’s behavior. The lesson is to connect each change to an observed bottleneck and validate that the game still behaves as intended.
For a port team, a useful decision sequence is:
- Reproduce the problem on the target build. Establish which scene or behavior produces the issue rather than assuming the source-platform profile will explain it.
- Identify the expensive work. Determine whether the relevant issue is associated with streaming, garbage collection, Blueprint operations, actor ticks, meshes, collisions, effects, materials, or another project-specific cause.
- Choose a change tied to that cause. Prefer removing genuinely unnecessary work or tuning the implicated system over making unrelated reductions.
- Check the result in the affected scenes. Confirm that the change addresses the observed problem without creating unacceptable visual, gameplay, or loading consequences elsewhere.
This is a way to organize investigation, not a Nintendo-prescribed checklist or a promise that those particular fixes will improve another game.

Choosing a performance and visual target
There is no single frame-rate target that defines a Switch port. The studio chooses a goal it believes it can sustain in the game’s scenes and balances that goal against visual quality and loading behavior. The feasible choice depends on the particular project; the target reported for one title should not be used as an industry benchmark.

Bulkhead said it targeted 45 frames per second for The Turing Test because it could maintain that rate across its scenes. It also tuned demanding effects, including ambient occlusion and screen-space reflections. That figure describes Bulkhead’s project-specific target, not a requirement for all Switch games, a typical result, or a guarantee about performance in other titles.
These choices involve tradeoffs rather than a single “best graphics” setting. A team may adjust effects or materials to fit a performance goal, or favor a different balance if the game’s design makes visual fidelity or loading behavior more important. Rendering changes may also require art adjustments, as the color-grading, specularity, and reflection work on The Turing Test demonstrates.
When assessing a port, it is more useful to ask what target the developers selected and whether the game sustains it in its demanding scenes than to assume a particular frame rate from the platform name. A number reported for one game is not evidence of what another game should achieve.
Preparing language and other release content
Technical adaptation is only part of the job. The team also has to prepare the game’s content for its intended release. In Bulkhead’s case study, the studio said EFIGS localization was a certification requirement for that project. It generated localized text textures dynamically during loading or when the language changed.

This is an example from one project, not evidence that every Switch game must support the same languages or use the same implementation. Localization requirements and content preparation should be confirmed for the specific release. The example does show how a content requirement can affect technical design: localized text may need to be prepared in a way that works with the game’s loading and language-change behavior.
Teams should therefore treat language and other release content as part of port planning, rather than assuming that localization can be added without technical implications. The approach used for one game can inform the questions to ask, but it does not establish a universal technical solution.

Nintendo’s public release process includes more than handing over a finished game. The publisher prepares a publishing agreement and age rating, submits the game for Nintendo review, and provides promotional materials for eShop and online listings. Nintendo’s public process outlines these release stages, but it does not expose the full technical certification checklist.
After the game is complete, Nintendo says publishers may self-publish on eShop and choose the game’s price and release date. Nintendo also provides tools for post-launch updates, downloadable content, and price promotions. The public process describes those possibilities but does not establish that every publisher must use the same publishing arrangement or offer every type of post-launch content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe technical and release workflows meet at submission: the team needs a build it can deliver, content prepared for the intended release, and the materials and agreements needed for review and presentation. A game that runs well but lacks release preparation is not ready to launch; likewise, store preparation does not substitute for adapting and validating the game itself.

What one port can—and cannot—tell you
Bulkhead Interactive programmers Ves Georgiev and John Newberry described Unreal Engine’s tools and features as helping The Turing Test take form on Switch and giving the team time to optimize assets and code for a tailored experience. Their case study, published on April 10, 2020, is valuable for seeing how an actual team handled engine migration, rendering, performance, and localization in one Unreal Engine game.
It cannot establish a standard porting schedule, budget, team size, success rate, or performance target. Neither the case study nor Nintendo’s public release overview provides a general estimate for those project variables. A team considering a port needs to assess its own engine version, game systems, assets, performance demands, and release needs rather than applying figures from this example.
When comparing two ports, useful questions include what source platform and engine each began with; what performance target each team selected; how loading and memory demands differ; which rendering effects or assets changed; what localization and other content were prepared; and how each publisher handled release. The available sources do not provide comparable numerical benchmarks across multiple ports, so those questions are more supportable than ranking ports by unsupported figures.

A Switch version is a deliberate adaptation shaped by engineering findings and release decisions. Cross-platform tools can provide a foundation, but the team still has to secure authorized access, inspect the existing project, diagnose target-specific behavior, make and validate changes, and complete release preparation. The final balance of performance, image quality, loading, and content reflects the needs and constraints of that particular game.
