Thermal-infrared satellites do not measure water directly. They measure longwave heat emitted by land and vegetation, then use surface-temperature observations with optical imagery, weather data and models to estimate evapotranspiration (ET) and identify evaporative stress. Because adequately watered plants usually cool themselves through transpiration, an unusually hot canopy can be an early warning of limited water availability. These products help farmers and water managers see patterns across fields and plan investigations or irrigation, but they remain estimates—not direct readings of irrigation applied or automatic irrigation prescriptions.
What a thermal-infrared satellite actually measures
Every surface emits longwave infrared energy. Thermal sensors detect that energy and infer a land-surface temperature from its intensity. NASA’s Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on Landsat measures land-surface temperature in two thermal infrared bands. The result is a temperature estimate for the observed surface, not a measurement of soil-moisture content, irrigation volume or groundwater.
The temperature becomes useful for agriculture because plants exchange water and heat in linked ways. Water leaving a leaf through tiny pores is transpiration. Water evaporating from soil, residue, water bodies and other wet surfaces is evaporation. Together they are evapotranspiration.
Evapotranspiration consumes energy and cools the surface. When roots can supply enough water, open stomata allow transpiration to continue and a crop canopy can remain cooler than a dry bare surface. Under water stress, plants often close stomata to conserve water. Evaporative cooling falls, and canopy temperature can rise. NASA/JPL describes this connection in its ECOSTRESS applications overview and quotes ECOSTRESS principal investigator Simon Hook: “By measuring evapotranspiration, we get an early indicator of what plants are experiencing.”

Temperature is therefore a signal that needs context. A hot field may reflect inadequate irrigation, but it could also be bare soil, a different crop stage, recent harvest, disease, salinity, wind exposure, sensor or atmospheric effects, or another cause. Interpretation comes from combining thermal observations with additional evidence.
From emitted heat to an estimate of crop water use
- Detect emitted thermal energy. The sensor records longwave radiation in thermal bands. Retrieval algorithms convert those measurements into land-surface temperature while accounting for factors such as the surface’s ability to emit radiation and the atmosphere between the ground and satellite.
- Locate the temperature pattern. A field map shows warmer and cooler portions of the observed surface. Comparisons across dates can reveal whether a field is becoming hotter relative to its own previous condition or to nearby, similar vegetation.
- Combine temperature with other inputs. ET models also use optical satellite observations, weather or reanalysis information, vegetation characteristics and energy-balance calculations. The model estimates how much available energy is going into evaporation and transpiration rather than sensible heating.
- Produce ET or stress indicators. The output may be daily or accumulated ET, an evaporative-stress metric, or another indicator of how strongly vegetation is losing water to the atmosphere. It is an inferred flux or condition, not a direct meter reading.
- Use the result with field knowledge. A manager can compare ET with irrigation records, soil observations, crop stage, weather and field inspections to decide where to investigate or adjust a plan.
NASA’s explanation of evapotranspiration emphasizes that ET represents water transferred from land and plants to the atmosphere. That is different from irrigation applied to a field and from water withdrawn from a canal, reservoir or aquifer. Some applied water may run off, drain below the root zone or remain in storage; ET is the portion returned to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration.
The main satellite systems and services
| System or service | What it provides | Best-fit decisions | Coverage and access stated by NASA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landsat TIRS | Land-surface temperature from two thermal infrared bands; these observations feed agricultural and water-use analyses. | Field and landscape temperature context, long-term land and water monitoring, and inputs to ET models. | NASA identifies Landsat thermal observations as important to water-resource managers. Spatial and revisit specifications for a particular current product are not stated in the cited material. |
| ECOSTRESS | Surface-temperature observations and products for ET and evaporative-stress analysis. | Studying how plant water use changes during the day, drought monitoring, and ecosystem or agricultural stress analysis. | Data are distributed through NASA Earthdata routes including LP DAAC and AppEEARS; see the ECOSTRESS data page. |
| OpenET | Field-level ET estimates generated from thermal-infrared Landsat data, other imagery and model methods. | Quantifying crop water consumption, comparing fields and supporting irrigation-efficiency or water-accounting work. | NASA describes it as an open-source platform covering the contiguous United States. It does not apply irrigation or guarantee a prescription. |
The systems are complementary rather than interchangeable. Landsat thermal data underpin the OpenET workflow, while ECOSTRESS is a mission and data collection focused on detailed thermal observations and derived stress information. NASA’s Agriculture & Food Security page explains the OpenET application and its field-level purpose. NASA also reports that nearly 80 percent of fresh water in the Western United States is used for crop irrigation on its TIRS overview; that figure is specific to the Western U.S. and should not be generalized to all regions or all water use.

What ECOSTRESS adds for drought and crop-stress monitoring
ECOSTRESS is the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on the International Space Station. Its changing overpass times allow observations of surface temperature and plant water use at different times of day, which is valuable because heat and transpiration can change substantially between morning and afternoon. NASA/JPL’s science page says more than half a million scenes had been acquired as of January 2025.
A NASA/JPL webinar page dated March 25, 2019 describes ECOSTRESS products at 70-meter resolution and repeat visits over a location every 3–5 days, with sampling at different times of day. Those numbers describe the mission presentation at that date, not a blanket guarantee for every current product or location; users should check the current product documentation before designing an operational monitoring schedule.
For drought analysis, repeated thermal observations can show where vegetation is losing evaporative cooling before visible damage becomes obvious. Analysts can examine whether stress is persistent, expanding, confined to field edges or synchronized with a heat wave. The signal is most informative when paired with precipitation deficits, soil moisture, crop calendars and on-the-ground observations.

How farmers and water managers use ET maps
Prioritizing field checks
A map can flag fields or zones whose estimated ET is lower than expected for their crop stage or whose surface temperature is unusually high. A manager can then inspect emitters, valves, pressure, soil moisture, blocked lines, salinity, pests or stand establishment instead of walking every acre first.
Supporting irrigation planning
ET estimates help describe crop water consumption over a period. Combined with effective rainfall, soil-water storage, crop requirements and system efficiency, they can inform when to investigate or schedule irrigation. They do not by themselves specify a safe application depth, because the needed amount depends on rooting depth, soil texture, current moisture, forecast weather, allocation limits and the irrigation system.
Checking water-accounting claims
At watershed or irrigation-district scale, ET maps provide an independent estimate of water consumed by crops and other vegetation. That can support allocation discussions, conservation programs and comparisons among fields. Accounting still requires clear definitions: ET, diverted water, pumped water, delivery losses and return flows are different quantities.

Monitoring drought impacts
Thermal stress indicators can reveal where vegetation is responding to limited water and how conditions change after rainfall or irrigation. Regional patterns are useful for drought response, but a satellite product does not replace official drought declarations, streamflow measurements, reservoir accounting or local agronomic diagnosis.
A practical workflow for interpreting a thermal or ET map
- Define the decision and area. Decide whether you need a field-level irrigation check, a seasonal water account or a broad drought overview. Choose the smallest area and time interval that match that decision.
- Confirm the product. Read whether the layer is land-surface temperature, ET, cumulative ET, reference-adjusted ET or an evaporative-stress indicator. Record its units, date, spatial resolution and quality flags.
- Check observation conditions. Note cloud screening, smoke, recent rain, extreme wind and whether the image represents a useful time of day. Missing or poor-quality pixels should not be treated as zero stress or zero ET.
- Compare like with like. Compare the same field with its historical pattern, nearby fields of the same crop and the same growth stage. Avoid ranking a harvested field against a fully vegetated one.
- Bring in independent evidence. Review irrigation logs, flow-meter data, soil-moisture probes, weather, rainfall, crop stage and field photographs. Look for agreement or a reason for disagreement.
- Investigate before acting. Visit anomalous zones or check infrastructure. If a management change is warranted, apply it within the farm’s agronomic and water-allocation plan, then review later observations.
OpenET is especially suited to the contiguous United States because NASA describes it as an open-source, field-level platform for that geography. ECOSTRESS access and processing options are described through NASA Earthdata, LP DAAC and AppEEARS on the official data page. Availability, latency and product definitions vary, so a user should verify the documentation for the selected dataset.

- Temperature is not a cause. It indicates a thermal condition. It does not identify whether the cause is drought, a broken irrigation line, disease, salinity, bare soil or another stressor.
- ET is modeled. Thermal measurements are combined with imagery, weather information and model assumptions. Different methods can produce different estimates, especially where inputs are sparse or conditions are unusual.
- Mixed pixels blur conditions. A satellite pixel may contain crop, soil, residue, roads or trees. The reported value may not represent the crop alone.
- Clouds and atmosphere limit observations. Thermal retrievals require usable observations and quality screening. A gap in coverage is not evidence that the field had no water use.
- Timing matters. Crop stage, time of day, recent irrigation and recent rainfall can change temperature and ET rapidly. A single scene cannot establish a trend.
- Applied water is a separate measurement. To know how much water was delivered, use flow meters, pump records, canal deliveries or other direct accounting, not ET alone.
These limits are why NASA presents the products as information for water-use assessment and monitoring rather than as automatic irrigation controls. A sound decision combines the map with field and weather information.

Choosing information for a particular job
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Then verify… |
|---|---|---|
| Finding unusually hot crop zones | Land-surface temperature or an evaporative-stress layer. | Crop stage, cloud/quality flags, irrigation records and a field inspection. |
| Estimating seasonal crop consumption | An ET product such as the field-level workflow described by OpenET. | Units, accumulation period, model documentation and agreement with available water-accounting data. |
| Studying within-day plant response | ECOSTRESS observations and products. | The actual acquisition times, resolution and current revisit characteristics for the product. |
| Planning a regional drought assessment | Thermal and ET layers combined with weather, precipitation, soil moisture and hydrologic data. | Geographic coverage, time series length and whether the indicator is intended for crop or ecosystem analysis. |
No source establishes one universally superior satellite or product. The appropriate choice depends on geography, spatial detail, timing, access, processing requirements and the decision you need to make.
The bottom line for irrigation and drought decisions
Thermal-infrared satellites turn emitted heat into a view of surface temperature. Because transpiration cools adequately watered vegetation, temperature patterns can reveal changing evaporative demand and possible crop water stress. ET services then combine those observations with other satellite, weather and model inputs to estimate water transferred to the atmosphere.
Use the estimates to find patterns, prioritize inspections, compare water use and improve planning. Do not treat a temperature map as proof of a diagnosis or an ET value as the amount of irrigation applied. The most defensible interpretation is a triangulation of satellite products, weather, crop and soil information, and direct records of water delivery.
