The reliable way to keep a theater company’s YouTube channel live 24/7 is to run an ongoing YouTube Live broadcast from prerecorded performances. An encoder reads your files, sends one continuous audio/video feed to YouTube, and advances through a playlist or loop. You can host that encoder on a maintained mini PC or use a cloud playout service so the broadcast continues after the theater computer is turned off.
What a 24/7 theater channel actually is
A normal YouTube upload ends after the file finishes. A 24/7 channel is different: YouTube sees one continuing live broadcast while your encoder plays uploaded performances, trailers, talkbacks or interval material in sequence. Viewers open the live URL and receive whatever item is currently playing.
The encoder must keep both the media feed and its connection to YouTube alive. When a performance ends, the playlist advances to the next file or returns to the beginning. If the encoder stops, the YouTube broadcast can end even though all of your videos remain uploaded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlan the channel as a broadcast service, not as a set of ordinary videos. Maintain a written schedule, rights file, restart procedure and independent archive of every master recording.

Check channel readiness before scheduling a long broadcast
- Enable live streaming and verify the channel. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming controls and complete any identity or eligibility checks shown for the channel. Confirm that no live-stream restriction is active before you schedule an overnight or multi-day run.
- Check stream capacity. YouTube’s current documentation allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Count every concurrent production, rehearsal and backup feed against those limits.
- Create a dedicated stream key. Keep the key in a password manager or the encoder’s protected credential store. Do not place it in a public script, shared spreadsheet or production notes sent by email. Regenerate it immediately if it is exposed.
- Decide how viewers will find the broadcast. Use a clear title, thumbnail and description that identify the company, production, language, running order and whether the material is an archival or scheduled presentation. Do not promise a live stage event when the feed is prerecorded.
Clear every right in the performance package
A theater’s ownership of a recording does not automatically grant every online transmission right. Treat each file as a rights package and document permissions before it enters the 24/7 playlist.
- Performance and recording rights: confirm that the theater may record the production and transmit that recording online.
- Performer and crew agreements: check releases for actors, musicians, choreographers, directors, designers and identifiable staff.
- Music and synchronization: clear both the composition and the specific recording where applicable. Include incidental music, underscoring, sound effects and music in trailers or interval material.
- Scripts, translations and adaptations: verify the right to transmit the text, translation or adaptation used in the production.
- Images, logos and clips: clear projected artwork, photographs, sponsor marks, archival footage and any third-party video included in the recording.
- Territory, duration and archive use: specify where the stream may be viewed, how long the license lasts, and whether YouTube’s replay, clips or later promotional extracts are covered.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can lead to a claim, replacement, interruption or termination. Even when your theater has a license, the rights owner may need to add the channel to an allowlist. Obtain that confirmation before going live and keep copies of contracts and correspondence with the production files.
The U.S. Copyright Office stated in 2011 that “the unauthorized retransmission of a stream simultaneously over the Internet to a user’s computer or other device infringes the public performance right, whether the stream is a retransmission of a live broadcast or a transmission of a performance of prerecorded material.” A license for a stage performance therefore needs to cover this specific online use.
Prepare files and the running order
Export consistent masters
Use a consistent frame size, frame rate, audio channel layout and loudness target across the playlist. Matching files reduce visible jumps and audio changes when the encoder moves from one item to the next. Keep an untouched master archive separately from the delivery copies; never make the streaming playlist your only copy.
Add slates and viewer information
A short opening slate can identify the company and production. Closing cards can show the next item, rights notices or a support address. If an item has a different aspect ratio or language, say so in the slate rather than leaving viewers to guess why the picture changes.
Build a playlist that can survive repetition
Choose one of three patterns:
- Single-production loop: one play runs repeatedly when the channel is dedicated to a particular show.
- Rotating repertory: several performances play in a fixed order, then return to the first title.
- Programmed blocks: performances are interleaved with trailers, interviews, talkbacks or interval material.
Record the exact order and expected duration. If a file is withdrawn, mark its replacement and the point at which it should enter the schedule. Keep rights-expiry dates beside each playlist item so an expired license cannot continue looping unnoticed.

Choose local encoding or cloud playout
| Option | Control | Dependencies | Who maintains it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo cloud playout | Upload recordings or a playlist, add the YouTube stream key and start the broadcast; the hosted workflow handles playback and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | StreamNeo account, uploaded files, storage, stream key and provider availability. | The theater maintains rights, playlist and YouTube checks; StreamNeo runs the hosted playback. | Companies that want the channel to continue after the office computer is turned off. |
| Local mini PC or encoder | Direct access to files, scenes, encoder settings and local monitoring. | Computer, electricity, wired upload connection, operating-system updates and a recovery procedure. | Theater staff or a contractor must maintain and restart the machine. | Teams with suitable hardware, technical staff and a controlled network. |
There is no universal mini-PC minimum specification. Sustained encoding capability, power reliability and upload capacity must be tested against the chosen resolution and frame rate. A machine that handles a short rehearsal may still overheat, drop frames or restart during a multi-day run.
How to run the channel on a local mini PC
1. Prepare the room and network
- Use a wired Ethernet connection where possible; Wi-Fi adds another failure point.
- Connect the mini PC and network equipment to dependable power. Consider a UPS sized for an orderly shutdown rather than assuming it will run indefinitely.
- Disable sleep, hibernation and automatic updates that can reboot the machine during a show. Schedule maintenance windows outside the broadcast.
- Set the operating system to restart the encoder application after a crash, and document how staff can log in locally if remote access fails.
- Measure sustained upload performance at the time of day the channel normally runs. Leave headroom above the encoder’s outgoing bitrate for other traffic and protocol overhead.
2. Configure the encoder and YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into the encoder’s protected settings.
- Choose one encoded stream with muxed audio and video. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the delivery master instead of upscaling a lower-resolution recording.
- Set the video bitrate, audio bitrate, codec and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current recommended values for that resolution and frame rate. Recommendations change, so use the values shown in YouTube’s live encoder guidance rather than an old preset.
- Set the encoder to continue through the playlist when a file ends. Confirm that the end-of-file action is “next item” or “loop,” not “stop.”
- Send a private or unlisted test first. Watch the preview for picture, audio sync, aspect ratio, captions and metadata before making the event public.
3. Test a full overnight run
Do not treat a five-minute test as proof of reliability. Run the exact playlist, output settings and network path overnight. Log CPU and memory load, temperature, dropped frames, encoder disconnects, audio silence and playlist progression. Verify that the machine does not sleep, reboot or lose its network lease.
4. Monitor the live event
Assign a person or rotation to check YouTube’s stream-health indicators, audio, dropped frames, claims, policy notices and the currently playing item at defined intervals. Monitoring should include a phone or separate computer so a failure on the encoder screen is not mistaken for a healthy broadcast.
Technical details for HLS-based ingestion
If your delivery workflow uses HLS ingestion, Google’s documentation requires one encoded stream with muxed audio and video, HTTPS transport and persistent connections. The media playlist must keep segments in order; each segment is typically one to four seconds. A broken HTTPS connection, missing segment or out-of-order playlist can interrupt playback even when the source files are intact.
Use the encoder’s current HLS profile and verify that its segmenter produces a continuous, ordered playlist. Keep the encoder clock correct, because timestamp drift can create audio/video sync problems over long runs. If your provider uses another ingest protocol, follow that provider’s current protocol requirements instead of applying HLS settings blindly.

All streamed material must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A 24/7 loop should be presented honestly as a programmed channel. Repetitive or reused material can receive additional scrutiny in policy and monetization reviews, so use original theater context, accurate metadata and documented rights rather than implying that a prerecorded loop is a live stage event.
Before publication, check every item for music claims, blocked territories, performer restrictions and license expiry. If YouTube reports a match during the stream, follow the rights owner’s instructions or stop the affected item; do not assume that silence in a private test proves the public broadcast is cleared.
Failure planning, archives and recovery
- Keep local masters: retain the highest-quality recordings and a copy of the current playlist outside the encoder or cloud account.
- Write a restart runbook: include the YouTube event, stream key location, encoder profile, playlist order, contact details and the exact public URL.
- Define escalation: state who handles a rights claim, a silent audio feed, a dropped connection and a machine failure outside office hours.
- Verify the replay: a long live broadcast is not a substitute for your own archive. After the event, check that YouTube produced the expected replay and retain your independent recording.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Stream never starts | Live streaming is not enabled, the event is restricted, or the stream key is wrong. | Check channel eligibility and restrictions, create a fresh event if needed, and copy the key again into the protected encoder field. |
| Frequent dropped frames | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, Wi-Fi interference or an overloaded encoder. | Move to wired Ethernet, reduce output settings to match the source and YouTube recommendation, stop competing traffic, and inspect CPU and temperature logs. |
| Video plays but audio is silent | The file has an unsupported or unmapped audio track, or the encoder is not muxing audio. | Inspect the delivery file, select the intended audio track, confirm muxed output and test with headphones in the YouTube preview. |
| Playlist stops after one performance | The end-of-file action is set to stop or a file cannot be read. | Set the action to next or loop, replace the unreadable file and run the complete sequence before reopening the public event. |
| YouTube interrupts the broadcast | A third-party match, policy notice or rights-owner block. | Read the notice, remove or replace the affected material, and obtain an allowlist entry where a licensed work requires one. |
| Picture quality changes between items | Mixed resolutions, frame rates or aspect ratios in the playlist. | Export consistent delivery copies or add slates that explain intentional format changes; do not upscale everything without testing encoder load. |
| Local stream stops when the office closes | Power loss, sleep, reboot, network interruption or an encoder crash. | Use the documented restart procedure, disable sleep and maintenance reboots, add monitoring, or move playback to a cloud service. |
Decision guide
Choose a local mini PC when the theater already has reliable power and upload, someone can maintain the operating system and encoder, and direct control of files and scenes is important. Choose cloud playout when continuity after office closure matters more than local control and you want hosted playback and recovery. In either case, rights clearance, YouTube channel administration, playlist accuracy and monitoring remain the theater’s responsibility.
