WordPress stores nearly all of a site’s content, accounts, and configuration in a MySQL or MariaDB database. The most important tables are wp_posts for published and unpublished content, wp_options for site-wide settings, and wp_users/wp_usermeta for accounts and their preferences. Managing that database safely means exporting a verified backup first, understanding which records are related, keeping autoloaded options below 800 KB, and testing cleanup on a staging copy before touching production.
What the WordPress database does
A WordPress installation has two persistent layers: files and database records. PHP files, themes, plugins, uploaded media and configuration files live on the server’s filesystem. The database stores the information WordPress must query and change constantly: post text, page status, menus, settings, users, comments, taxonomies, metadata, revisions and temporary values.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →WordPress connects to MySQL or MariaDB using the DB_HOST, DB_NAME, DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD constants in wp-config.php. A request loads the WordPress code, opens that database connection, reads the records needed for the request and may write new records, such as a comment, an autosave or an updated option.
The prefix is commonly wp_, but it is not guaranteed. During installation an administrator can choose another prefix, and security tools or hosting migrations may change it. Replace wp_ in every example below with the prefix shown in your own database. Never run a query against a guessed prefix.

The core tables and how they relate
| Table | What it contains | How WordPress uses it |
|---|---|---|
wp_posts |
Posts, pages, custom post types, attachments, revisions and autosaves | One record type is distinguished from another with fields such as post_type; status, author, parent and content fields determine how the item is displayed |
wp_postmeta |
Key-value metadata attached to a post, page, attachment or custom post | Stores extra fields supplied by WordPress, themes and plugins; post_id links each row to wp_posts |
wp_options |
Site-wide settings, including plugin and theme configuration | Each option has a name and serialized or scalar value; the autoload flag controls whether it is loaded on every request |
wp_users |
Login name, hashed password, email address and basic account details | One row represents one account; the user ID is referenced by other tables |
wp_usermeta |
Roles, capabilities, preferences and other per-user values | Multiple key-value rows can belong to one user through user_id |
| Comment tables | Comments and comment metadata | Comments connect to a post and can carry moderation status, author information and additional metadata |
| Term and taxonomy tables | Categories, tags, custom taxonomies and their metadata | Term relationships connect a post to one or more categories, tags or custom taxonomy terms |
The exact table list depends on the WordPress features and extensions installed. A single-site installation is commonly described as having 12 default tables, but plugins can add their own tables and a multisite network has additional network-level data. Do not assume that every installation has the same count. Inspect the database belonging to the site you are actually administering.
How a post is assembled
A page and a blog post use the same wp_posts table. The post_type value distinguishes a page from a standard post or a custom post type. The row also holds the author ID, publication status, title, content, slug, parent relationship and timestamps. An attachment is represented as a post record too; its file path and other details are normally stored in metadata.
Additional fields do not create a new column in wp_posts. They are stored as rows in wp_postmeta, where a post_id, meta_key and meta_value form a flexible key-value structure. This design makes WordPress extensible, but a heavily used site can accumulate many metadata rows and expensive queries.
How categories and tags are connected
A category or tag is not copied into every post row. WordPress stores the term itself, its taxonomy, and a relationship that connects the term to a post. That separation allows one term to be reused across many posts and lets plugins define custom taxonomies without changing the posts table.
How accounts and permissions are assembled
The account’s identity is in wp_users; roles and capabilities are in wp_usermeta. A role is therefore not a column in wp_users. Deleting or editing only one side can leave an incomplete account, so account changes should be made through WordPress’s user interface or a tested command rather than by deleting rows manually.
Understanding wp_options and autoloading
wp_options is the database’s site-wide settings store. Core, themes and plugins write values here for items such as the site URL, active plugins, scheduled settings, widget configuration and extension-specific preferences. Values may be plain text, numbers or serialized arrays, so a value that looks unreadable in a database client may be a valid structured setting.
The autoload column is the key performance control. Autoloaded options are read into memory on every normal page request, even when a particular page does not need each individual setting. That reduces repeated lookups for small, frequently used settings, but a large autoloaded set increases work and memory use on every request.

The WordPress Optimization handbook advises keeping the total size of autoloaded options under 800 KB. WordPress 6.6 added a Site Health check that reports the critical issue “Autoloaded options could affect performance” when the total exceeds 800 KB. Treat 800 KB as a diagnostic limit, not as a promise that every site below it is fast; query design, PHP work, external calls and hosting capacity also matter.
Autoload values in current WordPress releases
Historically, rows commonly used yes and no. A WordPress support moderator documented that core supports yes, on, auto-on and auto, while yes and no are deprecated for new usage since WordPress 6.7; new entries are stored as on or off. Existing databases may therefore contain more than one spelling.
Changing an option from an autoloaded value to off or no changes when it is loaded; it does not delete the option. The setting’s owner may expect it to be available on every request, so test the front end, administration screens, login flow and scheduled jobs after changing it.

Back up before you manage anything
A database cleanup is reversible only if you have a usable copy. A hosting snapshot alone is not enough: it may be overwritten, stored on the same server or unavailable when the account itself is damaged. Keep at least one copy off the production server and verify that it can be opened or restored.
Export with WP-CLI
WP-CLI’s wp db export command invokes mysqldump using the connection constants in wp-config.php. Run it from the WordPress directory as the account that can read the installation:
wp db export backup-2026-10-14.sql
The filename is an example; use a protected location and a date-based naming scheme that makes retention clear. The command accepts valid mysqldump flags, so an administrator can add options required by the hosting environment. To export only selected tables, use:

wp db export options-users.sql --tables=wp_options,wp_users
To omit tables, use the corresponding exclusion option:
wp db export content-without-cache.sql --exclude_tables=wp_some_cache_table
Check the command output, confirm that the file exists, and copy it away from the server. A successful command is not proof that a restoration will work; periodically test an import on a disposable database or staging site.
Use a backup plugin when shell access is unavailable
A backup plugin provides a graphical workflow and may send copies to off-server storage. Choose a tool that can export the database separately, shows completion and failure messages, and supports restoration. Before cleanup, create a full backup of both the database and the WordPress files because database records can depend on plugin, theme and upload files.
Inspect the database before changing it
First record the WordPress version, active plugins, table prefix and hosting environment. Then identify which component owns an option or metadata key. Names containing a plugin slug are clues, not proof: an extension may have been removed while its data remains, and a generic name may be used by several components.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a read-only database client or WP-CLI commands for initial inspection. Do not start with a delete query. Export the relevant rows, note their sizes and values, and reproduce the suspected problem on staging.
Check one option’s autoload flag
wp option get-autoload option_name
Replace option_name with the exact key. The result shows the stored autoload state. If the key does not exist, stop and verify the spelling rather than creating a replacement row.
Find oversized autoloaded data
In a SQL client, calculate the aggregate size of values whose autoload state is active, then sort individual rows by size. The exact accepted active values can vary by WordPress release, so include the values present in your installation rather than assuming only yes. A safe investigation records the query results before any change and compares the total with the 800 KB guideline.

Do not edit a serialized value as plain text. Removing one character or quote can make the entire option unreadable. Change an option through its owning plugin, through a WordPress-aware command, or by replacing the complete serialized value with a tested export.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to reduce autoloaded options safely
- Create and verify a full backup. Keep the SQL export and a copy of the files outside production.
- Measure before editing. Record the total autoloaded size and the largest individual options.
- Identify ownership. Check whether the option belongs to active core, a theme, a plugin, or a component that has already been removed.
- Reproduce on staging. Clone the site, apply the proposed change there, and test anonymous pages, logged-in pages, forms, search, checkout or membership flows, cron jobs and the administration area as applicable.
- Change one option at a time. WP-CLI can set an option’s autoload state:
wp option set-autoload option_name no
Use the value format supported by the WordPress version and tool installed on the site; newer entries may use off. Confirm the result with wp option get-autoload option_name.
- Clear caches and retest. Purge object, page and opcode caches only after recording their current state, then repeat the same functional checks.
- Monitor after deployment. Review Site Health, error logs, response times and scheduled-task failures. If a feature breaks, restore the previous autoload state from your record or restore the backup.
Never mark an option non-autoloaded simply because it is large. Some settings are intentionally available on every request. The correct fix may be an update from the owner, removal of an obsolete extension, splitting a data structure, or a code change that reads the value only when needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cleaning common database bloat
Post revisions and autosaves
Every revision and autosave is represented in wp_posts. They are useful for recovery and editorial history, but an active site can accumulate many records. Limit future revision growth in wp-config.php only after deciding how much history editors require, and remove existing revisions on a staging copy first. Deleting revisions is not the same as optimizing a table: it removes recoverable content.
Expired transients
Transients are temporary values stored in wp_options. Expired transients are not guaranteed to disappear immediately, so they can contribute to option-table growth. Remove them with a WordPress-aware tool that understands expiration and recreates values when needed. Do not delete every option whose name resembles a transient; some extensions use similar naming for persistent settings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Orphaned metadata
When a post, user or comment is deleted incorrectly, its related rows may remain in wp_postmeta, wp_usermeta or comment metadata. A left-join cleanup can remove rows with no matching parent, but it is destructive and easy to aim at the wrong table prefix. Export the candidate rows, test the query on staging and confirm that no custom workflow relies on the data before deleting it.
Spam and trash
Comments in spam or trash occupy database rows until removed. WordPress’s moderation screens are safer than a broad SQL delete because they preserve the relationships and statuses WordPress expects. Empty only the records you have approved for permanent removal.

Optimize table storage separately
A table optimization operation can rebuild tables and recover unused storage space, but it does not remove revisions, expired transients, spam or orphaned metadata. Treat storage optimization and data cleanup as separate jobs, and take a fresh backup before either one.
Manual SQL versus a cleanup plugin
| Approach | Advantages | Risks and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Manual SQL | Precise filters, repeatable scripts and visibility into every affected row | Requires database knowledge; a wrong prefix, join or condition can delete unrelated data; always test and export first |
| Cleanup plugin | Guided screens, WordPress-aware relationships and less need for shell access | Convenience can hide broad deletion; inspect its selection rules, make a full backup and use staging before production |
For a one-off diagnosis, read-only queries and WP-CLI are usually easier to audit. For recurring maintenance, document the exact categories removed, the retention period and the restoration procedure. Automation should fail safely rather than silently deleting data when a table or option is missing.
A practical maintenance workflow
- Inventory. Note the WordPress release, database engine, table prefix, active extensions and available disk space.
- Back up. Export the complete database with
wp db exportor a backup plugin, copy it off-server and verify the file. - Measure. Check autoloaded option size, table sizes, revision volume and obvious orphan candidates without deleting anything.
- Clone. Work on staging with production data protected and outbound email disabled where appropriate.
- Change narrowly. Remove only identified obsolete data or alter one autoload flag at a time.
- Test. Exercise publishing, media uploads, logins, permissions, comments, search, forms, scheduled tasks and any commerce or membership features the site uses.
- Deploy with a rollback. Save the before-and-after measurements and keep the original backup available.
- Review. Check Site Health and logs after deployment, then schedule the next review based on observed growth rather than an arbitrary deletion cycle.
Failure modes and recovery
The site shows a database connection error
Check that DB_HOST, DB_NAME, DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD still match the hosting account, that the database server is reachable, and that the database user retains permissions. Do not create a new empty database over the existing one. Restore the connection settings or contact the host before attempting an import.
The site breaks after an autoload change
Immediately restore the previous autoload value recorded before the change. If the command cannot run because WordPress will not bootstrap, edit the row through a database client using the exact table prefix and option name, then clear caches and retest. The long-term fix is to identify why the option was expected on every request, not to leave a broken value disabled.
An import appears incomplete
Compare the export file size and command output with the source database, and inspect the import log for permissions, packet-size, timeout or character-set errors. Restore into a new database first so that a partial import cannot overwrite the only working copy.
Version and installation differences to keep in mind
WordPress database behavior evolves. The 800 KB autoload Site Health check arrived in WordPress 6.6, and autoload conventions changed for new entries in 6.7. Table names and counts also vary with multisite, plugins and historical migrations. Claims about a fixed multisite table count, a special wp_collaboration table in a future release, the exact release when InnoDB became the default, and a universal revision or transient reclamation percentage are not established here; verify current release documentation and your own schema before relying on them.
Do not delete a table because it is absent from a current tutorial, and do not add a table because a tutorial lists one that your installation does not need. The database is an implementation detail of the specific WordPress release and extensions running on the site.
Quick Recap
What good database management looks like
- A complete, restorable database-and-files backup exists before every destructive change.
- Autoloaded options are measured and kept below the 800 KB guideline where practical.
- Option ownership and metadata relationships are identified before deletion.
- Cleanup is tested on a staging copy with realistic content and workflows.
- WP-CLI exports and changes are logged, dated and stored off-server.
- Production changes are narrow, reversible and followed by functional checks.
- WordPress release notes and current documentation are consulted when schema or autoload behavior changes.
