The Steam Frame sold at launch does not have a hot-swappable battery. Its rechargeable battery is built into the rear head strap, while the front core module can be detached from that strap. Valve is developing a separate replacement strap with hot-swappable batteries and premium Index-style off-ear audio, but that accessory is not available at launch.
Until Valve publishes that strap’s specifications, owners can extend sessions only by charging through USB-C. The headset accepts up to 45 W, and Steam Support estimates about 1.5 hours for a full recharge; actual runtime depends on settings and whether the headset is used standalone or while streaming.
What ships in the current Steam Frame
The launch Steam Frame uses a two-part design:
- Core module: contains the compute hardware, storage, optics and sensors.
- Rear head strap: carries the battery, speakers and microSD slot, and counterbalances the weight of the front module.
Valve specifies a rechargeable 21.6 Wh lithium-ion battery in that rear strap. The published specification describes the battery as part of the strap, not as a removable cartridge that users can exchange during a session. There is therefore no documented launch feature that lets you pull out a depleted pack and insert a charged one while keeping the headset running.

The modular boundary is important: you can separate the core from the strap, allowing Valve to make alternate straps without replacing the electronics in the front module. Modular separation and hot-swappable batteries are related, but they are not the same feature. The current design provides the former; Valve has only announced the latter for a future accessory.

How the modular arrangement works
The core stays with the computing and display hardware
The front module is the part that performs the computational and sensing work. It houses the storage, optics and sensors, so an alternate strap would not require you to buy another complete headset. In principle, the same core can be attached to different rear assemblies with different power, audio or comfort characteristics.
The launch strap combines balance, power and audio
Putting the battery behind the head balances the mass of the front module. The same strap also carries the built-in speakers and microSD slot. This arrangement keeps those functions in the replaceable portion of the design, rather than permanently embedding them in the front electronics.
USB-C is the current way to replenish energy
Valve lists USB-C charging at 15 V and 3.0 A, for a 45 W maximum input. Steam Support gives an estimated full-charge time of approximately 1.5 hours. The estimate is not a guaranteed session length or a universal charging result: runtime changes with display and performance settings, and with whether the headset is operating standalone or receiving streamed content.

What Valve has promised for hot-swapping
In an interview reported by PC Gamer on September 14, 2026, Valve software engineer Jeremy Selan described a future first-party accessory: We’re working on a future first-party accessory where it will plug in and replace the existing [strap]. That head strap will include a hot-swappable battery, and then premium Index-style off-ear audio.

Valve hardware engineer Joy Lyons added: And so it’s a modular design. You just snap in, like Jeremy mentioned. That’s not available at launch, but it’s coming soon, and we’ll have pricing and details on that.
Those statements establish the broad mechanism: remove the launch strap, snap on Valve’s replacement strap, and use that strap’s exchangeable battery modules. They do not establish the battery capacity, the connector used by the packs, electrical protection features, whether the swap can occur while the headset is powered, a release date or a price.
Current strap, future strap and power bank compared
| Characteristic | Launch strap | Future Valve replacement strap | External USB-C power bank |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery arrangement | Integrated 21.6 Wh rechargeable lithium-ion battery in the rear strap. | Hot-swappable batteries are promised; capacity and pack design are not stated by Valve. | Separate battery outside the headset; it does not replace the integrated pack. |
| Core during replacement | The strap can be separated from the core as part of the modular design, but the battery itself is not documented as user-swappable. | Valve says the replacement strap will plug in or snap onto the existing core. | The core and strap remain attached while a cable supplies power. |
| Continue playing during a battery exchange | Not supported by any published launch specification. | Not stated. Valve has not said whether the headset can remain powered while a pack is exchanged. | Potentially usable as connected charging when output meets the headset’s requirements, but that is tethered power rather than a hot swap. |
| Added weight | Not stated in the cited Valve specifications. | Not stated. | Depends on the bank and cable; no universal figure applies. |
| Charging speed | USB-C input up to 45 W (15 V/3 A). | Not stated. | Depends on the bank’s USB-C Power Delivery output and cable. |
| Audio design | Speakers integrated into the launch strap. | Premium Index-style off-ear audio is promised. | No change to headset audio. |
| Price and availability | Included with the headset at launch. | Not available at launch; Valve has not published price or release date. | Varies by the charger or bank selected. |
| Warranty and support status | Covered as part of the current headset configuration. | Support terms are not yet published. | Accessory support depends on its manufacturer; it is not a Valve battery replacement. |
The table separates two ideas that are often conflated: an external source can keep supplying electricity through USB-C, while a hot-swap system replaces a depleted battery without relying on a cable. Only the future Valve strap has been described as the second type.

How to charge Steam Frame today
Use a charger that matches the published input
- Choose a USB-C Power Delivery charger capable of the headset’s published maximum: 15 V at 3.0 A, or 45 W.
- Connect the charger to the headset’s USB-C charging port with a cable rated for the required power.
- Allow approximately 1.5 hours for a full recharge under the conditions used by Steam Support’s estimate. Charging time can vary with temperature, usage while connected and charger behavior.
A 45 W USB-C charger for Steam Frame is the straightforward stationary option because it matches Valve’s stated maximum rather than relying on an underspecified adapter.

Use a power bank as connected charging, not as a removable pack
A USB-C power bank can serve the same charging role when its Power Delivery output meets the headset’s requirements. Check the bank’s voltage and current profiles, not just its headline wattage. A bank that advertises 45 W but cannot provide the required profile may charge more slowly or fail to maintain power under load.
The bank remains an external accessory connected by cable. It does not prove that the 21.6 Wh strap battery can be removed safely, and community reports about particular banks are anecdotal rather than Valve compatibility certification. Keep the cable and bank secured so they cannot pull on the headset during movement.
Account for real-world runtime
Steam Support explicitly says runtime varies with settings and with standalone use versus streaming. A single runtime number would therefore be misleading. Reduce power demand through the headset’s available performance or display settings when a session must last longer, and treat the 1.5-hour figure as recharge time, not endurance.

For the launch hardware, there is no documented user procedure for removing the battery while powered. The battery is integrated into the strap, and Valve has not published a hot-swap connector, latch sequence or service instruction for it. Do not open the strap or attempt to disconnect its internal battery as a substitute for the future accessory; doing so could damage the headset and may affect warranty support.

For the future strap, the answer is still unknown. “Hot-swappable” strongly suggests that Valve intends battery exchange as an operating feature, but the engineers’ statements do not say whether the core can remain on, whether a reserve cell bridges the exchange, or whether software will require a sleep or shutdown step. Wait for Valve’s final manual and safety instructions before assuming uninterrupted play.
What installing the future strap is expected to involve
Valve’s description supports this high-level sequence, but it is not a released procedure:
- Power down or place the headset in the state required by Valve’s eventual instructions.
- Detach the launch rear strap from the core module using the release mechanism Valve provides.
- Align the replacement strap’s electrical and mechanical interfaces.
- Snap the replacement strap onto the core, as described by Lyons.
- Insert a charged battery module according to the accessory’s published orientation and locking instructions.
- Confirm that charging, audio and the strap connection are recognized before wearing the headset.
Do not infer the connector shape, battery count or electrical procedure from photographs or community prototypes. None of those details has been specified by Valve as of October 18, 2026.
What remains unknown about the hot-swap system
- Battery capacity: Valve has not said whether the future pack will match, exceed or fall below 21.6 Wh.
- Number and form of packs: The announcement says “a hot-swappable battery,” but does not state whether the strap uses one cartridge, two alternating packs or another arrangement.
- Power continuity: There is no confirmation of uninterrupted operation during exchange, a backup cell, or a required shutdown.
- Charging method: Valve has not stated whether packs charge in the headset, in a separate dock, through the strap or through another accessory.
- Connector and protection: Electrical contacts, authentication, thermal safeguards and insertion protection have not been announced.
- Weight and comfort: The future strap’s mass, balance and adjustment range are unknown.
- Audio details: “Premium Index-style off-ear audio” identifies the design direction, not loudness, frequency response, microphone behavior or compatibility details.
- Price, release date and regional availability: Valve says those details are forthcoming; no store listing has established them.
- Support and warranty: Valve has not published serviceability rules or replacement-battery coverage for the future accessory.
How the SteamOS battery update fits in
SteamOS 0.4 release notes dated October 8, 2026, claim up to a 12% improvement in battery lifetime. That is a firmware efficiency change, not an increase in the physical battery’s 21.6 Wh capacity and not a hot-swap feature. The improvement is described as “up to,” so the result depends on workload and settings rather than applying identically to every session.

Which option makes sense for your use
If you already own the launch headset
Use a properly specified 45 W USB-C charger at a desk or a compatible USB-C Power Delivery bank when mobility matters. Plan around charging breaks because the integrated strap battery is not documented as exchangeable.
If you need uninterrupted multi-hour sessions
A future replacement strap is the option designed for that use, but it cannot be purchased or specified yet. Until Valve publishes its capacity, swap procedure and availability, an external bank is the only practical interim approach, with the inconvenience of a cable and the uncertainty of sustained output under load.
If audio is part of your upgrade decision
The future strap’s promised Index-style off-ear audio may be a reason to wait, but Valve has not released technical audio specifications. The launch strap’s speakers and the future system should not be treated as equivalent until those details are published.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Check that a charger or power bank can provide USB-C PD at up to 15 V/3 A.
- Use a sound, appropriately rated cable and keep external batteries secured during movement.
- Do not open the launch strap or pull its internal battery to imitate hot-swapping.
- Treat “hot-swappable” as a future-strap feature, not a capability of every Steam Frame sold today.
- Before buying a replacement accessory, verify Valve’s official capacity, connector, charging method, shutdown requirements, price, release date and warranty terms.
