SSH secures a remote session in stages. It first creates a server-authenticated transport, negotiates algorithms, derives fresh symmetric keys, and turns on encryption. Only then does it authenticate your user account and open channels for a shell, command, tunnel, or subsystem. The initial identification and negotiation messages are visible on the network, but passwords and application data are sent only after the encrypted transport is active.

SSH is three protocols working as one connection

The Secure Shell (SSH) protocol suite is defined as three cooperating layers in RFC 4251. Treating them separately makes the handshake easier to understand and helps diagnose failures.

Layer Primary job What it carries
Transport Negotiates cryptography, authenticates the server, performs key exchange, and protects packets against disclosure and modification. The encrypted foundation for everything that follows.
User authentication Proves which user is requesting access and whether that account may log in. Public-key, password, and other methods permitted by server policy.
Connection Multiplexes independent logical channels over the protected transport. Interactive shells, commands, port forwarding, X11 forwarding, and subsystems such as file-transfer services.

This separation explains a common misunderstanding: an SSH key used to identify a user is not the key that identifies the server. The server’s host key is involved in the transport handshake; a user’s private key is used later, by the authentication layer.

What happens when an SSH client connects

The following sequence describes a normal SSH version 2 connection. Exact algorithms depend on the client, server, software version, and local security policy, but the order of operations is defined by the protocol.

  1. TCP and identification: The client opens a reliable TCP stream to the server’s SSH service and both sides send identification strings.
  2. Algorithm negotiation: Each side sends an SSH_MSG_KEXINIT packet listing supported key-exchange methods, host-key algorithms, encryption algorithms, integrity algorithms, and compression options.
  3. Host-authenticated key exchange: The selected key-exchange method creates a shared secret K and an exchange hash H. In a typical Diffie–Hellman-style exchange, ephemeral values from both sides contribute to the secret. The server signs the exchange hash with its host key.
  4. Key derivation: Both sides derive separate encryption and integrity keys for each traffic direction from K, H, and the session identifier.
  5. Enable the negotiated protection: Each side sends SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS. Packets sent after that point use the negotiated keys and algorithms.
  6. User authentication: The client requests the ssh-userauth service and offers a method allowed for the account, such as public-key or password authentication.
  7. Channel setup: After successful authentication, the client requests the ssh-connection service and opens one or more channels for the requested work.

The first exchange hash becomes the session identifier. Later authentication proofs can bind themselves to that identifier, preventing an authentication exchange from being detached from the transport session that protected it.

Are SSH credentials encrypted before login?

Yes. User authentication takes place after the transport layer has completed key exchange and both peers have sent SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS. A password field is therefore carried inside the encrypted, integrity-protected transport rather than sent as clear text.

There is still an unencrypted part at the beginning: identification strings and the algorithm lists in the initial negotiation. An observer can usually tell that SSH is being used and can see connection metadata such as addresses and timing. Those early messages do not contain your password, private key, shell output, or file contents. The client must also verify the server’s host key; encryption without server authentication could create a confidential connection to an impostor.

How algorithm negotiation chooses the cryptography

SSH does not mandate one cipher or one key-exchange method for every deployment. The SSH_MSG_KEXINIT exchange contains ordered lists, and each side selects the first mutually acceptable option according to its preferences and policy. The lists cover several independent decisions.

  • Key exchange: The method used to establish the shared secret and exchange hash, commonly based on ephemeral Diffie–Hellman mathematics.
  • Server host-key algorithm: The signature scheme the server uses to prove possession of its host private key.
  • Encryption: The symmetric cipher and mode used for packet confidentiality after keys are enabled.
  • Integrity: A message-authentication code (MAC) or an authenticated-encryption mode that lets the receiver detect alteration.
  • Compression: An optional transformation negotiated for the packet stream.

Modern SSH implementations may offer families such as AES in counter or authenticated-encryption modes, elliptic-curve key exchange, and SHA-2-based integrity algorithms. The available set is implementation- and policy-dependent, so an algorithm name in a configuration file is not a universal requirement. A connection fails before authentication when the two sides have no mutually permitted choice in one of these categories.

How the server proves its identity

During key exchange, the server uses its host private key to sign data that includes the exchange hash. The client verifies that signature with the corresponding host public key. This binds the negotiated secret to the server identity presented during the exchange.

First connection and known host keys

On a first connection, the client normally has no trusted copy of the server’s host key. It displays the key fingerprint and asks whether to trust it, or an administrator may install a key in advance. Verify that fingerprint through a trusted channel or an out-of-band record before accepting it. Once stored, the key is checked on later connections.

Changed-host warnings

If a server is rebuilt and receives a new host key, or if an attacker intercepts the connection, the key may no longer match the stored value. Treat a changed-host warning as an identity problem, not as a prompt to delete the old key automatically. Confirm the server’s legitimate replacement key with its operator, then update the local record through the normal host-key management procedure.

Host keys and user keys are different

Key type Owner When it is used What it proves
Host key SSH server During transport key exchange The endpoint answering as the server controls the expected host private key.
User key Client-side user During user authentication, when public-key login is selected The client possesses the private key corresponding to a public key authorized for the account.

A user private key is not transmitted to the server. The client uses it to create a proof for the authentication exchange; the server checks that proof against the public key installed for the account. Protecting the private key with a passphrase reduces the damage if the file is copied.

How the shared secret becomes packet keys

The key-exchange method produces the shared secret K, while both sides calculate the same exchange hash H. SSH feeds those values and the session identifier into its key-derivation rules to produce independent material for each purpose.

  • A client-to-server encryption key.
  • A server-to-client encryption key.
  • A client-to-server integrity key, when the selected design uses a separate MAC.
  • A server-to-client integrity key, when a separate MAC is used.

Direction-specific keys prevent the two traffic directions from sharing one symmetric key. The derived keys are specific to the session rather than being a permanent password-derived secret. Long-lived connections can perform another key exchange, replacing the active material without requiring a new login.

Confidentiality and integrity are separate properties

Encryption provides confidentiality: an eavesdropper should not be able to read the protected packet contents. Integrity protection provides tamper detection: if a packet is modified, forged, or otherwise fails verification, the receiver rejects it. Some negotiated ciphers provide these properties together as authenticated encryption; others pair a cipher with a separate MAC. SSH’s negotiation determines which construction is used.

What SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS changes

Before SSH_MSG_NEWKEYS, the peers are exchanging the information needed to agree on protection. After each side receives and sends that message according to the transport protocol, subsequent packets use the newly derived keys and negotiated algorithms. This is the boundary between setup and protected operation.

The user-authentication request therefore travels inside the new transport. If authentication fails, the encrypted transport can remain available for another permitted attempt until the server’s limits or policy terminate the session.

How user authentication works inside the tunnel

The client requests the ssh-userauth service and advertises the methods it can use. The server applies its account configuration and policy and accepts, rejects, or asks for another method.

Public-key authentication

The client identifies a public key and demonstrates possession of its private counterpart by signing authentication data. The server verifies the signature and checks whether that public key is authorized for the requested account. The private key remains on the client.

Password authentication

The client sends the password field through the already protected transport. The server then validates it using its account system. SSH encryption protects the password while it crosses the network, but it does not make a weak password resistant to guessing or protect a compromised server.

Multiple or additional methods

Server policy can require more than one method, restrict methods by account, or disable password login entirely. Those choices are authentication policy layered on top of the same transport; changing them does not change how the initial encryption handshake works.

How one encrypted connection carries many activities

After authentication, the client requests the ssh-connection service. The connection layer opens logical channels, each with its own purpose and flow-control state, while all channel data travels through the same encrypted transport.

  • Interactive shell: A terminal session with input, output, and terminal-size requests.
  • Remote command: A non-interactive process started on the server.
  • Port forwarding: A channel that carries traffic between a local or remote listening socket and a destination.
  • X11 forwarding: A channel for graphical X11 protocol traffic when enabled and permitted.
  • Subsystem: A named service, such as a file-transfer subsystem, running within SSH.

Multiplexing means these channels share one authenticated transport rather than creating a separate cryptographic handshake for every command or forwarded connection. Closing one channel need not close the others; terminating the transport closes all channels that depend on it.

A packet-level view of the protected phase

Once new keys are active, SSH divides application data into packets, applies the negotiated encryption construction, and adds integrity protection as required by that construction. The receiver decrypts and verifies each packet before delivering its payload to the appropriate channel. A failed integrity check is treated as a transport error rather than silently passing altered shell output or forwarded traffic to the application.

Channel identifiers keep multiplexed traffic separate. A shell’s bytes cannot be mistaken for a port-forwarding channel’s bytes merely because they share the same TCP stream; the connection layer labels and routes them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What SSH protects—and what it does not

  • Protects in transit: Authenticated sessions, passwords sent through SSH password authentication, shell input and output, command data, and channel payloads after new keys are enabled.
  • Authenticates the server when checked correctly: The host-key signature and the client’s trusted host-key record provide this assurance.
  • Does not hide all metadata: Network observers can still see endpoints, timing, volume, and that an SSH-like protocol is in use.
  • Does not make endpoints trustworthy: A compromised client can leak a private key or session data, and a compromised server can record commands after login.
  • Does not validate authorization by itself: Account permissions, shell restrictions, forwarding rules, and operating-system access controls remain server policy.

Common connection failures and what they indicate

Symptom Likely stage Useful check
Connection refused or timed out TCP reachability or the SSH service listener Confirm the address, port, firewall path, and that the server is listening.
No matching key-exchange, host-key, cipher, or MAC algorithm Algorithm negotiation Compare both sides’ enabled algorithm lists and update policy or software rather than enabling obsolete algorithms broadly.
Host-key verification failed Server authentication Check the fingerprint with the operator; investigate unexpected changes before replacing the stored key.
Permission denied after a successful host-key check User authentication Verify the account name, authorized public key, private-key access, password policy, and any required additional method.
Shell opens but forwarding or a subsystem fails Connection-layer channel request or server authorization Check channel-specific policy, destination permissions, and whether the requested subsystem is enabled.

Verbose client logging is useful because it shows which stage completed without exposing the private key itself. Use it to distinguish network failure, negotiation failure, host identity failure, and account authentication failure.

A practical checklist for a trustworthy SSH session

  1. Confirm you are connecting to the intended hostname, address, and port.
  2. Verify the server host-key fingerprint through a trusted source, especially on first use or after a warning.
  3. Keep client and server software maintained so both sides share current, approved algorithms.
  4. Prefer a protected user private key and guard its passphrase; install only the matching public key on the server.
  5. Apply least-privilege account and forwarding policies on the server.
  6. Use verbose diagnostics to identify the failing protocol stage instead of weakening algorithms or deleting host-key records blindly.

Why the order matters

SSH’s order prevents a password prompt from being the first security event. The peers negotiate a policy, establish a shared secret, authenticate the server, derive directional keys, and activate integrity protection before the client proves a user’s identity. The connection layer then reuses that authenticated, encrypted transport for every permitted channel. Understanding those boundaries lets you answer the practical question behind the protocol: a successful login is not merely a password sent to a remote machine; it is a user-authentication exchange carried inside a server-authenticated and cryptographically protected session.
