Short answer: the “new Harry Potter RPG” most likely means a reported second installment of Hogwarts Legacy. Warner Bros. Discovery was reported on August 13, 2026 to have mentioned a “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” in a shareholder letter. That establishes that a follow-up has been referenced, but not what it is like. No story, setting, protagonist, combat system, platforms or release date were supplied in that report.
Hogwarts Legacy remains the only game in this comparison with a documented feature set. It is an open-world action RPG set in the 1800s, where you create a Hogwarts student, explore the castle and surrounding Wizarding World, learn spells, brew potions, grow plants, care for magical beasts, develop skills and build relationships. The fairest comparison therefore separates confirmed facts from expectations.
What the “new Harry Potter RPG” currently refers to
As of October 13, 2026, the phrase does not identify a fully announced, separately titled game. It refers most plausibly to a reported second installment of Hogwarts Legacy. The report, dated August 13, 2026, attributes the reference to a Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter and describes the disclosure as sparse.

That distinction matters. A corporate mention is evidence that a follow-up is being discussed or developed, but it is not a game reveal. It does not establish whether the project continues the first game’s timeline, uses a new school or region, follows the same type of character, or retains the same systems. Until a detailed announcement appears, claims about those points are speculation.

What Hogwarts Legacy actually offers
A 19th-century Wizarding World
Warner Bros. Games announced Hogwarts Legacy in September 2020 as a role-playing game set at Hogwarts in the 1800s. The period places the player well before Harry Potter and before Newt Scamander’s era. The official rationale was deliberate: the developers wanted a time with no established hero occupying the central role.
Narrative lead Moira Squier described the choice this way: “We really wanted to pick a time period where there were no heroes, no Newt, no Harry – it’s you.” The player is therefore not replaying a film plot or taking control of a famous character. The historical setting gives the game room to create an original student and an original conflict while using familiar Wizarding World institutions and locations.
Your character and the central premise
You play a student who arrives at Hogwarts with an unusual connection to ancient magic. The official description frames the adventure around an ancient secret and a threat to the wizarding world. Your character attends classes and develops as a witch or wizard while becoming involved in events larger than ordinary school life.

You choose your character’s appearance, house affiliation and progression, then decide how to approach many situations. House sorting is part of the experience, but it does not turn the game into four entirely separate campaigns.
Open-world exploration
The game is described as an immersive, open-world action RPG. Hogwarts is an explorable environment rather than only a menu of mission locations. You can move through classrooms, corridors and grounds, then travel beyond the castle to Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and the broader Overland.
Exploration is connected to progression. New spells and abilities open up interactions, while the surrounding regions contain activities, resources, encounters and story missions. The result is a school-based adventure that also functions as a large fantasy travel map.

Activities beyond combat
The official game page lists several systems that make the experience broader than a spell-fighting game:
Recommended Free Tools
- Spell learning: lessons and progression add magical abilities to your toolkit.
- Potion brewing: ingredients and recipes support preparation and utility.
- Herbology: you grow plants that can be useful during play.
- Magical beasts: you can discover and care for fantastic creatures.
- Relationships: fellow students and other characters can become companions or allies through quest lines.
- Skills: development choices let you specialize parts of your build.
These systems give the game a daily-school fantasy layer alongside its larger mystery. They also mean that a player who prefers collecting, crafting, exploration or character interaction has alternatives to repeatedly fighting through missions.
Combat and freedom of approach
Combat is built around combining spells rather than selecting one attack and repeating it. Official developer commentary discusses spell combinations, plants and potions as tools that can work together in an encounter. Stealth is another option, and the design goal was summarized by combat interviewee Troy Johnson as “play your way.”
In practice, that means your loadout and preparation influence how a fight unfolds. You can use direct spell chains, support items, environmental opportunities or quieter tactics where the situation allows. The available material does not promise that every mission supports every method, so “choice” should be understood as a design principle and a set of documented options, not as a guarantee of unlimited branching outcomes.
What is—and is not—known about the reported follow-up
What the report establishes
The August 2026 account says a Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter referred to a “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.” That wording supports calling the project a reported follow-up to the released game. It does not provide a final title, a trailer, a developer statement, a feature list or a launch schedule.
What remains unanswered
The same report supplies no confirmed information about the dimensions readers usually want to compare:
Rank #3
- Fight to save your world. Save your sister. Save your soul.
- Fight for everything. Legends are born from trials.
- Epic weaponry, collect a diverse array of melee weapons and define your playstyle with stylish, effective combat.
- Stunning worlds to explore. Prepare to adventure far and wide across dangerous dimensions, majestic lands and strange new worlds.
- Whether the setting remains in the 1800s or moves to another period.
- Whether the player is again a Hogwarts student, an adult witch or wizard, or another kind of character.
- Whether the story continues the original game’s characters and unresolved threads.
- Whether Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and the Overland return in recognizable form.
- Whether spell combinations, stealth, potions, plants, beast care, house sorting and relationship quests return or change.
- Whether the game is being made for the same consoles and PC storefronts.
- Whether it has a release window, preorder date or announced edition structure.
“Not disclosed” is more accurate than “removed.” A feature cannot be described as absent from the sequel merely because the available report does not mention it.
How the two games compare on the questions players care about
Setting and timeline
Hogwarts Legacy has a clear historical identity: the 1800s, before the familiar modern-era heroes. That choice supports an original student story while preserving Hogwarts, wizarding customs and recognizable locations.
The reported installment has no announced date in the Wizarding World. It could continue the earlier period, move closer to another known era or establish a different historical context. Until the publisher specifies one, the original’s 1800s setting should be treated as a property of Hogwarts Legacy, not a confirmed sequel feature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Protagonist and narrative
The first game makes the player the central Hogwarts student. Its ancient-magic premise and customizable character are designed to let players shape the identity of the hero rather than imitate a book or film protagonist.
Nothing in the shareholder-letter report identifies the follow-up’s protagonist or plot. It is therefore premature to call it a direct continuation of the original student’s story, a prequel, a sequel with a new student or an ensemble adventure.
World size and exploration
The established game combines a detailed Hogwarts with Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and the Overland. That combination is important to its identity: it is both a school simulation fantasy and an open-world action RPG.

The next game might expand the same map, redesign familiar areas or introduce a different region. No map, location list or exploration technology has been reported, so comparisons about world size or density cannot yet be made responsibly.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Role-playing and relationships
In Hogwarts Legacy, role-playing comes from character creation, house sorting, skill development, equipment and activities such as potions, plants and beast care. Relationship quests add personal stories alongside the main threat.
The follow-up’s approach to choices and relationships is unknown. It may preserve those systems, redesign them or use a different structure. The existence of a second installment alone does not guarantee that every original mechanic returns.
Combat and progression
The original supports spell combinations and lets players supplement direct attacks with plants, potions and stealth. Skills provide a progression layer, while exploration and activities feed the character’s growth.
No combat footage or system description has been supplied for the reported game. It cannot yet be rated as deeper, faster, more tactical or more role-playing-focused than its predecessor. Those judgments require an official demonstration or detailed developer explanation.
Platforms and release timing
The official game site lists PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch availability for Hogwarts Legacy. Nintendo’s United States store listing identifies WB Games as publisher, Avalanche Software as developer and November 14, 2023 as the Switch release date. That date applies to the Switch version in that store; it should not be generalized to every platform or region.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the new game officially a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy?
The evidence supports a careful “probably, according to the report,” not a fully confirmed product description. A shareholder-letter reference to a “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” is stronger than an unverified rumor, but it is less detailed than a formal game announcement with a title, developer, trailer and platforms.
For readers deciding what to play, the practical answer is simple: Hogwarts Legacy is the released game you can play now; the reported second installment is a future project whose defining details remain open. You can use the first game to understand the setting and systems, but you should not assume that its exact map, timeline or protagonist carries over.
What to check when official sequel details arrive
A reliable announcement should answer these questions directly:
- Identity: Is there an official title, developer and publisher statement?
- Timeline: Which period of Wizarding World history does it use?
- Character: Who is the playable protagonist, and can players create that character?
- World: Which locations are explorable, and is the structure open world?
- Systems: Are spells, potions, plants, beasts, relationships and skills returning or changing?
- Choices: Do decisions alter quests, relationships or endings, or mainly change combat style?
- Platforms: Which PlayStation, Xbox, PC or Nintendo hardware is supported?
- Timing: Is the date a firm launch date, a window or only an internal target?
Those answers will turn the present evidence gap into a genuine comparison. Until then, the only defensible contrast is between one documented game and one sparsely reported follow-up.
