东北之夏 (The Northeast Summer) is a free visual novel that turns 东百往事—a collage of Northeast Chinese short-video personalities, catchphrases and fan edits—into a fictionalized story set in Shenyang. It launched on Steam on 9 January 2023, after a community-funded project grew from character sketches and an interactive prototype into a full game.
What is 东百往事?
东百往事, also written 东北往事, is not one original film or a single documented incident. It is a remix culture built from Kuaishou-era “土味短视频” (roughly, deliberately rough or earthy short videos) from Northeast China. Clips featuring recurring personalities, staged confrontations and memorable lines were later reposted and reorganized by Bilibili users after the original accounts and videos disappeared during a 2018 platform rectification.
Bilibili users labeled the recovered clips “二次元” or “经典老番,” then turned them into 鬼畜 edits with repeated cuts, music and new dialogue. That circulation helped shift the name from 东百往事 to 东北往事. A widely shared edit by the creator “请你喝好果汁” combined the footage with Wong Kar-wai-style dialogue and the song 《夏日漱石》; IT之家 reported that the original passed 10 million views in 2023 (IT之家).
The meme’s vocabulary became recognizable beyond the original clips. Examples include “这位更是重量级,” “指定没你好果汁吃,” “没活儿不用硬整，可以去咬打火机,” and “全体目光看向我.” These lines are funny partly because they are detached from their original setting and repeatedly re-edited into new contexts.

Which real people and events are behind it?
The best-known source material centers on 虎弟 (later commonly called 虎哥), 刀哥 and the 杀马特团长. IT之家 dates the famous “沈阳大战” conflict to 2017 and attributes “指定没你好果汁吃” to 刀哥. The footage was performative internet entertainment, not a neutral recording of a historical dispute, and later reposts and edits further changed how viewers understood it.
That mediation matters when asking whether the game is “based on a true story.” The real online personalities supplied recognizable images, phrases and situations, but 东北之夏 is not a biography. Its characters are fictionalized and feminized versions: 虎弟/虎哥 becomes 虎妞, 刀哥 becomes 刀酱, and the surrounding conflict is reshaped for a visual-novel narrative. The game should therefore be read as an adaptation of a meme archive, not as a factual account of the people involved.

How the meme became a game
From fan art to a prototype
Creator 庄不纯 initially commissioned feminized character designs based on the meme figures. Audience reaction encouraged him to make an interactive prototype, which received more than one million views on Bilibili. The response showed that viewers wanted to do more than quote the clips: they wanted to inhabit a story built from their shared references.

A one-time 爱发电 funding drive attracted more than 2,000 participants. Fans—including developers employed by major game companies—volunteered to form 庄不纯工作室. The result was a community-supported production rather than a conventional studio adaptation.

Permission and local research
庄不纯 contacted 虎弟 and 刀哥 through livestream interactions and has said he received oral permission to create from the meme material. He also visited Shenyang locations, researched local food and industrial history, and selected the title 东北之夏 instead of using “东百,” which he worried could offend a Northeast resident (IT之家).
What happens in 东北之夏?
The player controls 小亮, who meets 虎妞 and 刀酱 in Shenyang and becomes involved in the conflict with the 杀马特团长’s side. The story recreates recognizable meme set pieces—including the brick-breaking episode, 小亮’s backflip and a Shenyang street challenge—while adding comic dialogue and a more sentimental sense of place.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Food, neighborhoods and industrial history give the setting context that the short clips never had. Instead of treating Northeast culture only as a source of shock-value “狠活,” the game uses the references to build a localized portrait of Shenyang. TapTap’s account describes this balance as a key reason the adaptation connected with players (TapTap/游戏陀螺).

These are launch-period snapshots, not a permanent measure of the game’s current rating. A separate UDN report described the response as unusually strong while noting that audiences outside China did not necessarily share the cultural context behind the jokes (UDN Game Corner).
Why the adaptation resonated
- Shared recognition: Players who knew the clips could identify the catchphrases, gestures and set pieces immediately.
- Fiction rather than impersonation: Feminized character designs and a new protagonist let the creators transform the material instead of presenting it as a documentary.
- Participatory authorship: Fan art, prototype viewers, crowdfunding contributors and volunteer developers all helped move the project forward.
- A broader Northeast portrait: Shenyang food, streets and industrial history add empathy and local texture to material that originally circulated as chaotic comedy.
The cultural route—from Kuaishou clips, through takedowns and Bilibili preservation, to a free Steam visual novel—also explains why the game’s popularity arrived so quickly. It was not introducing an unknown setting; it was giving an existing online audience a playable version of its own shared archive.
Where can you play it?
The release described in January 2023 coverage is the free Steam edition of 东北之夏. Search Steam for the Chinese title when looking for the game. Because the source material is rooted in Chinese-language internet culture, players unfamiliar with the original clips may miss some references, but the Shenyang setting and character-driven visual-novel format remain understandable without treating the game as a literal historical record.
