Puella Magi Madoka Magica’s first two movies, Beginnings and Eternal, retell the original 12-episode TV story in a condensed, revised theatrical form. They are not simply the television episodes pasted together: scenes are cut and joined across episode boundaries, and some animation, visual details, direction, and music were changed. Rebellion is different: it is a new story made after the compilation films, not another recap.

The official franchise history identifies the TV anime as a 12-episode series and describes Beginnings and Eternal as a two-film re-edit of those episodes. The official film introduction presents the movies as a compressed way to experience the story. Their original theatrical releases were in October 2012.
That distinction is the key to understanding the movie lineup: the first two films retell the television story, while the third, Rebellion, is a separate new work. Calling all three movies “the series recap” blurs together two different purposes. If you are deciding what to watch, first ask whether you want the original episodic presentation, a condensed film version, or the continuation.

What changes when 12 episodes become two films?
Episodes give way to a more continuous flow
The most important difference is structural. The series presents the story through separate television episodes; the films cut and connect material that was originally divided between them. That creates a denser theatrical flow, in which developments can arrive in quicker succession rather than being separated by an episode break.

Director Akiyuki Shinbo described the editorial challenge as cutting scenes and connecting originally separate episodes while keeping small details consistent. That matters because a line, interaction, or visual detail that worked in its original episode context may carry a different impression when the surrounding scenes run together. Shinbo also cautioned that developments can pass quickly if viewers do not remember earlier lines or exchanges.
This is a difference in rhythm, not evidence that the movies replace the central story with a different one. The TV version gives its developments the space of the original episodic arrangement; the films prioritize a concentrated, continuous retelling. Neither format is established as universally better. Viewers who enjoy pausing between episodes or letting each installment’s developments settle may prefer the series’ structure. Those who want the story to move forward as a pair of connected theatrical features may prefer the films.
There is no verified cut-by-cut inventory
The official material confirms re-editing, but it does not provide a complete list of every omitted, added, or rearranged scene. It also does not establish the exact amount of footage removed or a reliable runtime comparison with the TV series. It is therefore more accurate to call the films condensed re-edits than to claim that a particular scene was definitely cut or that a specific percentage of the series remains.

How the theatrical presentation was revised
The first two films are not shot-for-shot duplicates of the TV anime. Shinbo said the production reconsidered how television images and movement would read on a large screen, then revised animation and finishing for the theatrical presentation. “Finishing” is part of the difference, not just the question of whether a drawing was replaced. A theatrical version can adjust the presentation of image and movement for a large-screen viewing context. Shinbo’s account specifically describes reviewing the television image and motion and reworking the animation and finishing; it does not claim that the entire films were newly animated from the ground up.
Transformation and witch scenes
Shinbo specifically said the magical-girl transformation scenes were remade because they were intended to make a strong impression. He also described changes to witch-appearance scenes requested by Gekidan Inu Curry. These are concrete examples of revised sequences, but they do not establish that every transformation or witch scene was wholly replaced, or provide a full scene-by-scene change list.
These revisions help explain why the films can feel like more than a compressed plot summary to someone who has already seen the series. They bring specific visual sequences into the theatrical reworking, while preserving the films’ identity as a retelling of the same core TV story. If you are seeking a precise inventory of what changed in every sequence, the official descriptions do not go that far.
Small character and visual details
Shinbo pointed to details such as a hair accessory for Sayaka and Madoka appearing in casual clothes as examples of differences in character presentation. He described the theatrical version as a “world that has looped one or two more times.” That phrase was his personal image for the small changes; it should not be read as confirmation that the compilation films add another canonical loop to the plot.
The examples are useful because they show the scale of at least some differences: not every revision is a new plot beat or a wholesale redesign. Small presentation choices can distinguish the theatrical version while leaving the broad story intact. Shinbo’s remarks about carefully connecting episodes also make clear why those details matter in an edit: images and lines that once sat in separate episodes now meet in a continuous sequence.

Music changes the impression of familiar moments
Shinbo also discussed new music and how a different musical choice can change the impression of a familiar scene. That means the films can feel distinct even where they retain story material viewers recognize from the series. The sources establish that music changed, but do not supply a complete track-by-track comparison.

The grounded takeaway is that the soundtrack presentation is not identical; a claim about exactly which cue appears in each scene would require a detailed comparison that the official descriptions do not provide.
Is Beginnings and Eternal just a recap?
They are recaps in the broad sense that they retell the TV story, but “just a recap” misses the meaningful differences. They re-edit all 12 episodes into two films, tighten the connections between formerly separate episodes, and revise elements of the theatrical presentation. The result is a condensed adaptation of the same core story, not an untouched transfer and not a new story on the model of Rebellion.
If you have already watched the series, the movies offer a more concentrated way to revisit its story and a presentation with revised visuals and music. If you have not seen it, the films provide a shorter-form route through the same basic story, though the denser pacing leaves less room for the original episode-by-episode rhythm.
It is reasonable to treat the two-film version as an alternative presentation, not a substitute that makes the TV version irrelevant. The television anime remains the original 2011 format, with 12 episodes and their separate structure. The films, released theatrically in October 2012, reshape that material for a two-part viewing experience. Because no official cut list or exact length comparison is supplied, it is best not to assume that the films contain every moment in precisely the same form.

Where Rebellion fits—and what to watch next
The franchise’s official history calls Rebellion a completely new work produced after the compilation films. It is not a third movie summarizing the original 12 episodes. The official Walpurgisnacht Rising site, in turn, positions that later film as a canonical sequel to Rebellion.
- For the original experience: watch the 12-episode TV anime.
- For the condensed theatrical retelling: watch Beginnings, then Eternal.
- To continue the story: watch Rebellion after the original series’ events. The official history places it after the compilation films, which retell those events.
The choice between the TV series and the first two films is mainly about format and pacing: original episodic presentation versus a revised, more continuous film version. Rebellion is the next story rather than an alternative recap. In other words, the first two films can stand in for revisiting the original story in condensed form, but they do not make Rebellion redundant; it has a different narrative role.

Aniplex of America announced a three-disc Puella Magi Madoka Magica: the Movie Trilogy Blu-ray on April 26, 2021. Its announcement lists Beginnings, Eternal, and Rebellion, Japanese and English audio, English and Spanish subtitles, and approximately 357 minutes. That is a specification for the announced trilogy edition, not a runtime comparison between the films and the TV series.
The three-disc figure describes the physical set, and the approximately 357-minute figure is for the trilogy package as a whole. It should not be used to calculate how much shorter the first two movies are than the 12 TV episodes: it includes all three films, and it is not a comparative runtime study. Likewise, the listed audio and subtitle options describe that specific Aniplex of America announcement, not necessarily every regional edition.

Which version should you choose?
Choose the TV anime if you want the story in its original form: 12 episodes, the first-broadcast format from 2011, and its episode-by-episode rhythm. Choose Beginnings and Eternal if you want a condensed theatrical retelling, or if you are curious how the animation, selected scenes, and music were revised for the films. If you have watched the series already, the movies offer a different presentation of familiar material rather than a wholly new version of the plot.
Choose Rebellion when you are ready for a new story after the original series’ events. It is not interchangeable with either compilation film. For someone comparing the releases, that is the most useful dividing line: TV series versus two-film re-edit is a format choice; Rebellion is a continuation choice.
