The Kindle Scribe supports both pen handwriting and typed text through its on-screen keyboard, but they serve different purposes: the pen is for writing in notebooks and adding supported annotations, while the keyboard appears when a text-entry action calls for typing. Amazon’s documentation describes this as a combination of input methods on the device, not as support for a separate physical keyboard.

What you can write, where you can put it, and whether handwriting can be converted or searched depends on the document, import method, language, internet connection, and Scribe generation.

What “keyboard” means on Kindle Scribe

On the Scribe, “keyboard” means the on-screen keyboard used for supported text-entry actions. When a field or note workflow accepts typed text, you enter it on the touchscreen; the pen remains the way to write by hand. Amazon’s available Scribe guidance does not establish that a wired or Bluetooth keyboard can be connected for this work, so do not assume that “keyboard” means a physical accessory.

The two modes are complementary rather than interchangeable. Handwriting is suited to free-form pages, marks, and handwritten annotations. Typing is useful when the task offers a text field and you want text characters instead of pen strokes. A typed note and handwritten marks may both be relevant to a Scribe workflow, but their availability and placement depend on the particular book or document feature.

Amazon describes the Scribe as a device for taking notes on books and documents, writing lists and journals, and using AI to summarize or refine notes. That is Amazon’s product description, not an independent measurement of how fast or accurately people type or write by hand. No comparative speed, accuracy, or preference figures are established in the available sources.

Where handwriting and typed text fit

Notebooks: use the pen for free-form writing

A notebook is the natural place for handwritten notes. Write on the page with the Scribe stylus and use the writing toolbar for available tools such as the pen, highlighter, eraser, and undo or redo. The pen workflow is not limited to converting handwriting into text: the marks themselves can simply remain handwritten notes.

If a notebook workflow calls for typed text, the on-screen keyboard provides typed input. Amazon’s documentation does not describe this as a general conversion of every page into an editable typed document. Handwriting conversion is a separate feature with its own supported-language, connectivity, and handwriting-style conditions.

Books and personal documents: choose a supported annotation type

On compatible books and personal documents, annotations may include sticky notes, active canvases, and writing directly on a page. Some notes can be associated with a passage, highlight, or underline. Amazon also describes an expandable margin for writing notes related to nearby book text; available margin behavior has language-direction limitations.

These are annotation options, not a promise that every page or file accepts the same kind of writing. A Kindle book, a personal document delivered with Send to Kindle, and a PDF transferred by USB can have different support. Before relying on direct page writing or a specific note type, check Amazon’s current personal-document file-type and notes support guidance alongside its instructions for handwriting on books and personal documents.

Expandable margins: check language direction

Amazon documents expandable-margin writing for left-to-right horizontal languages. It says right-to-left horizontal languages and vertical languages are not currently supported for this margin feature. That limitation concerns the documented margin workflow; it should not be generalized into a claim that all handwriting or annotation features are unavailable in those languages.

How to decide which input to use

What you want to do Input or feature to look for Important condition
Write freely in a notebook Pen handwriting Conversion to typed text is optional and does not recognize every handwriting style or kind of content.
Enter text in a supported text field On-screen keyboard Amazon’s reviewed Scribe documentation does not establish external keyboard support.
Attach a note to book text Sticky note, expandable margin, or active canvas where supported Availability varies with content and, for the margin feature, language direction.
Write directly on a document page Pen, on compatible content Document format and how the file was added can affect support; USB-loaded PDFs are among the cases requiring care.
Find a phrase written by hand Notebook handwriting search on eligible Scribes Amazon documents this for models released in 2025 or later, with registration, internet, and language requirements.

A practical rule is to start with the place where the note belongs. For a standalone journal entry or list, open a notebook and write with the pen; use typed input only when the notebook action presents a text-entry option. For notes tied to reading, use the annotation option available for that book or file rather than expecting a universal text box or page-writing tool.

Handwriting conversion is not automatic or universal

Handwriting recognition can convert eligible writing into typed text, but it is a distinct operation from simply writing in a notebook. Amazon says conversion requires a supported language and an internet connection. Its troubleshooting guidance identifies several kinds of content or writing it does not currently support: slanted writing, highlighter writing, landscape writing, drawings, diagrams, and equations.

This means that a page containing a mixture of words, marks, and sketches may not convert as a reader expects. A conversion feature should not be treated as OCR for every mark or as a guarantee that diagrams and mathematical notation will become meaningful typed text. If recognition fails, check that the writing is in a supported language, the device is online, and the material is not one of the unsupported styles or content types listed by Amazon.

Conversion time can also vary with notebook size. Amazon Customer Service says that converting a large synced notebook of 100 pages or more can take over 10 minutes. This is a support estimate for that situation, not a benchmark or a promise that every notebook will take that long. See Amazon’s handwriting-recognition troubleshooting guidance for current prerequisites and troubleshooting details.

Handwriting search has a model-generation limit

Searching notebooks for handwritten content is different from converting a notebook into typed text. Amazon’s current help page documents notebook handwriting search for Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later; do not assume the feature is available on every Scribe, including earlier generations. Amazon says the feature requires the device to be registered to an account and connected to the internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The help page lists these supported languages for handwriting search: English (U.S. and U.K.), French (Canada and France), German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Chinese (Simplified)–Pinyin. Language support and software features can change, so check Amazon’s current Scribe search guidance if search is central to your workflow.

Document type and import route can change annotation support

Personal documents do not all behave alike on the Scribe. Amazon’s support information distinguishes file types and delivery routes. In particular, a document sent with Send to Kindle may have different writing support from a PDF transferred directly by USB, and Amazon identifies exceptions for USB-loaded PDFs and certain previously sent files. As a result, “I can write on documents” is too broad to be a reliable compatibility rule.

Before moving a large set of PDFs or other files onto the device, check the support matrix for the exact file type and route you plan to use. If a feature such as writing directly on the page is missing, confirm whether the file is eligible and whether its import route is supported before troubleshooting the pen itself. Amazon’s document-notes compatibility page is the relevant reference for those distinctions.

How to troubleshoot common problems

  • The keyboard is not appearing: Confirm that the action you selected is a supported text-entry action. The on-screen keyboard is not a general-purpose writing surface that replaces the pen in every notebook, book, or document.
  • You cannot write directly on a page: Check the content type and how the personal document was added. Not every book, document, or PDF offers direct page writing; compare the file and import route with Amazon’s support matrix.
  • Handwriting conversion does not work: Confirm internet access and a supported language, then check whether the writing is slanted, made with a highlighter, in landscape orientation, or contains drawings, diagrams, or equations.
  • A large notebook seems slow to convert: Allow time for processing. Amazon says conversion of large synced notebooks with 100 or more pages can take more than 10 minutes.
  • Handwriting search is unavailable: Verify the Scribe generation, account registration, internet connection, and search language. The documented notebook handwriting-search feature is for models released in 2025 or later.
  • Part of the page is difficult to write on: Amazon notes that some third-party covers, particularly covers containing magnets, can interfere with writing areas. Remove the cover temporarily to see whether it is affecting input.
  • The margin feature does not work as expected: Check whether the text is in a supported left-to-right horizontal language. Amazon does not currently document expandable-margin support for right-to-left horizontal or vertical languages.

Models and the pen included with the device

Amazon identifies Scribe releases from 2024 and 2025, and some newer software features are limited by generation. In particular, the 2025-or-later restriction applies to the documented notebook handwriting-search feature; it should not be applied indiscriminately to every writing or typing function.

Amazon’s device-identification guidance lists a Premium Pen with specified 2025 Scribe generations. Check the exact model listing if you are identifying a device or verifying what came in its box. The pen enables the handwriting workflow; the typed-text workflow described here uses the on-screen keyboard, so a separate keyboard accessory is not required for the documented features. Amazon’s Kindle identification page provides the model and included-pen details.

What to expect in everyday use

For quick handwritten thoughts, a journal, or a list, the notebook and pen keep the page open-ended. For a field that specifically requests typed text, use the touchscreen keyboard. When reading, decide first whether you need a note attached to a passage, a margin note, or writing on the page; the available choice depends on the content. Conversion and search add convenience in eligible cases, but neither should be treated as a universal substitute for organizing or reading handwritten pages.

The key distinction is not “keyboard versus pen” as competing hardware. It is typed entry versus handwriting, followed by a second question: does this particular document and Scribe generation support the note action you want?
