The James Webb Space Telescope helps scientists study fast radio bursts by finding and analyzing the galaxies associated with them—not by detecting the bursts themselves. In the case of FRB 20240304B, MeerKAT detected and localized the radio flash, while Webb’s NIRCam imaged its host galaxy and NIRSpec measured the galaxy’s redshift. Those observations revealed a star-forming dwarf galaxy far smaller than researchers expected, offering a new clue about the environments in which fast radio bursts occur.

Radio telescopes find the burst; Webb investigates its host

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief flashes of radio emission. MeerTRAP used South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope to detect FRB 20240304B on March 4, 2024. Its radio data suggested the burst was very distant, but locating a galaxy at the burst’s position was needed to confirm and characterize that distance. NASA reports that the largest ground-based telescopes had not found a galaxy at the precisely localized position, prompting follow-up with Webb. NASA’s account of the discovery describes how the observatories contributed different pieces of the investigation.

Observatory or instrument Role in this result
MeerKAT, used by MeerTRAP Detected and localized the radio burst.
Webb’s NIRCam Detected the galaxy at the burst’s position.
Webb’s NIRSpec Measured the galaxy’s spectrum, allowing researchers to determine its redshift.

Webb’s contribution was infrared imaging and spectroscopy of the galaxy. It did not observe the radio flash itself. The distinction matters: the radio observations identify the transient, while Webb helps reveal what kind of galaxy lies at its location and how far away that galaxy is.

Webb measured a redshift of 2.148

NIRSpec’s spectrum gave the host galaxy a redshift of 2.148. NASA says that corresponds to a time when the universe was about 3 billion years after the Big Bang. NASA Science reports the redshift and its cosmic-time interpretation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Redshift describes how light from a distant object has been stretched as the universe expands. In this study, the measurement provides evidence about the host galaxy’s distance and era. It does not, by itself, explain what physical object produced the burst or how the burst was generated.

The host is a small, actively star-forming dwarf galaxy

NASA describes the galaxy as a star-forming dwarf and reports that it was about 1,000 times less massive than expected. That makes it unlike the massive star-forming galaxies that account for most known FRB hosts, according to NASA’s release. The release summarizes the host-galaxy finding.

The result broadens the observed range of galaxies associated with FRBs. A host that differs from the usual pattern gives researchers another environment to consider when testing ideas about where these bursts arise. It is evidence about the range of possible settings, not proof of a particular origin mechanism.

What this discovery does—and does not—tell scientists

FRB origins remain unresolved. NASA quoted lead author Manisha Caleb of the University of Sydney: “What makes fast radio bursts interesting is that we don’t know what generates them. We have theories about what objects produce them, but we don’t have conclusive proof.” The dwarf galaxy finding can help scientists assess those theories, but it does not identify the source of FRB 20240304B.

The study is a good example of how observatories can work together: radio measurements pinpointed the fleeting event, and infrared observations exposed and characterized the faint host galaxy. Webb orbits the Sun at the second Lagrange point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, and is designed to observe infrared light. NASA’s Webb mission overview describes the observatory and its mission.
