The International Space Station stays livable through a combination of life-support equipment and crew-health practices. Its environmental control and life support systems circulate and clean cabin air, recover and treat water, and generate oxygen; exercise, food planning, medical support, and station operations address the effects of living in microgravity. These systems reuse valuable resources, but the station is not fully self-sufficient: its life support depends on equipment, international partners, and continued resupply.

What makes the ISS a habitable environment?

On Earth, many conditions needed for daily life are supplied by the surrounding environment. A spacecraft cannot rely on that: its crew needs breathable air, usable water, pressure, ventilation, fire detection and suppression, and ways to manage waste. On the International Space Station, these needs are addressed through an interconnected set of environmental control and life support functions, grouped by NASA under the Environmental Control and Life Support System, or ECLSS.

NASA describes three key ECLSS areas: the Water Recovery System, the Air Revitalization System, and the Oxygen Generation System. Together with other station functions, they help control cabin pressure and oxygen levels, circulate air, detect and suppress fires, supply water, and manage waste. The point is not that the station recreates Earth in miniature. It is that machinery continually manages the essentials inside a sealed, occupied spacecraft. NASA’s ECLSS technical overview describes the system and its components.

Microgravity makes the human side of habitability especially important. Fluids shift in the body, and spaceflight can affect vision, the brain, bones, muscles, cardiovascular function, aerobic capacity, and strength. A livable station therefore needs more than clean air and water: crew health, food, exercise, and reliable operations are part of the same practical challenge.

How does the ISS recover and reuse water?

The station recovers water from several streams rather than depending only on newly delivered supplies. NASA identifies urine, humidity condensate collected from cabin air, and water recovered from spacesuit hydration systems as sources. This matters because water is needed for drinking and food preparation as well as hygiene, while carrying all of it from Earth would make resupply a continuing constraint.

From wastewater to stored water

The treatment process combines collection, separation, filtration, and quality checks:

  1. Collect wastewater. The Water Recovery System gathers urine, cabin humidity condensate, and water from spacesuit hydration systems.
  2. Separate water from urine. The Urine Processor Assembly uses vacuum distillation to recover water from urine. Processing leaves a concentrated brine, which can be treated further when the Brine Processor Assembly is used.
  3. Filter and treat the water. The Water Processor Assembly uses specialized filtration and catalytic treatment to remove impurities.
  4. Check purity and reprocess when needed. Sensors monitor water quality. Water that does not meet the system’s checks is sent through treatment again rather than directly to storage.
  5. Prevent microbial growth. NASA says acceptable water is iodinated before storage.

Water recovery is a treatment system, not a shortcut that turns untreated waste directly into drinking water. The recovered material passes through processing and monitoring before it is considered suitable for use. In a June 20, 2023 milestone report, NASA ECLSS water subsystems manager Jill Williamson described the result this way: “The crew is not drinking urine; they are drinking water that has been reclaimed, filtered, and cleaned such that it is cleaner than what we drink here on Earth.” That is Williamson’s characterization of the reclaimed water, not a separate comparative water-quality measurement in the report. NASA’s water-recovery milestone account explains the process and the reported demonstration.

Why NASA reports both about 90% and 98%

Water-recovery percentages need context. NASA’s ECLSS overview says the Water Recovery System recovers and recycles about 90% of the water on the station. Its 2023 milestone story gives a different set of figures for total recovery: before the Brine Processor Assembly, reported total recovery was 93–94%; with processing of the remaining urine brine, NASA reported a 98% total-recovery demonstration. Those numbers describe different source statements and system contexts, not one guaranteed rate for every operating condition.

Figure What it describes Qualification
About 90% Water recovered and recycled by the Water Recovery System NASA’s ECLSS technical overview, linked to a PDF dated April 4, 2025. It is the overview’s stated system performance.
93–94% Total water recovery before the Brine Processor Assembly Figure attributed to NASA ECLSS water subsystems manager Jill Williamson in NASA’s 2023 milestone story.
98% Total water recovery after processing remaining urine brine A milestone demonstration reported by NASA in 2023; it should not be read as a universal rate for all operating conditions.

The difference is meaningful: one figure is the ECLSS overview’s stated Water Recovery System performance, while the higher total-recovery figures in the milestone story account for additional processing of urine brine. NASA’s 2023 account says the 98% demonstration used the Brine Processor Assembly; it does not establish that the station always achieves that result. The story’s page metadata says it was last updated March 2, 2026.

NASA’s milestone article estimates that a crew member needs about one gallon of water per day for consumption, food preparation, and hygiene such as brushing teeth. That is the article’s stated daily need for those uses, not a complete current inventory of station water supply or a guarantee of an individual’s daily allotment.

How does the station keep air breathable and provide oxygen?

Breathing changes cabin air: people exhale carbon dioxide, and materials and human activity release trace contaminants. The ISS therefore circulates cabin air through equipment that removes both categories rather than treating the cabin as a one-time supply of breathable air. NASA’s ECLSS overview identifies activated charcoal, a catalytic oxidizer, and a lithium hydroxide bed among the equipment used to remove trace contaminants; molecular sieves capture carbon dioxide.

Oxygen production is linked to water recovery. The Oxygen Generation Assembly uses electrolysis to split recovered water, delivering oxygen to the cabin and producing hydrogen. Depending on how it is used, the hydrogen can be vented or sent to the carbon-dioxide reduction assembly. In the Sabatier reactor, hydrogen reacts with crew-exhaled carbon dioxide to produce water and methane. The water can be reused; NASA says the methane is released to space.

This chemical loop helps recover water and oxygen-bearing material, but it is not a perfect cycle. Some products leave the station, and the system does not reclaim every atom. “Recycling” in this context means recovering and treating useful material through specific processes, not eliminating the need for outside supplies or maintenance. NASA’s ECLSS reference outlines the air revitalization, oxygen generation, and carbon-dioxide reduction functions.

How do astronauts protect their health in microgravity?

In microgravity, the body does not experience the same loading and fluid distribution as it does on Earth. NASA identifies changes involving fluid shifts, vision, the brain, bones, muscles, cardiovascular function, aerobic capacity, and strength. The effects are not just a matter of comfort: maintaining health and physical performance is part of making a long-duration mission workable.

Exercise is a prescribed countermeasure to help address these changes and support crew health and performance. It is one part of a larger human-health effort rather than a replacement for medical support or life-support hardware. NASA’s human-health reference discusses the physiological concerns, while its overview of the station’s role in human spaceflight describes the use of countermeasures to support astronauts. NASA’s Fundamentals of Human Health and its ISS overview provide further context.

Food must work for people and for a spacecraft

Space food has to meet ordinary human needs while fitting a demanding operational environment. NASA says food must be safe, nutritious, and acceptable to crew. Planning also accounts for mass and volume, power, crew time, preparation capability, individual preferences, resupply, variety, mission duration, and shelf life. These factors interact: food must remain usable over the mission while fitting the space, equipment, and time available for storing and preparing it.

NASA’s Living in Space page describes food, exercise, sleep, and general well-being as areas that require technology for human spaceflight. It also describes Veggie, a low-power plant-growth unit, as a way to supplement astronauts’ diets and provide relaxation and recreation. NASA says astronauts have grown eight types of leafy greens and experimented with Red Robin tomatoes on that page. Those examples show how plant growth can contribute to food and crew experience; they do not mean the station produces all the food its crew needs. NASA’s Living in Space technology page describes Veggie and other aspects of human life in space.

Why does the ISS still need resupply and international coordination?

Resource recovery reduces how much the station must replace, but it does not make the ISS independent. The water system has losses and relies on functioning processors, filters, sensors, and other hardware; the air and oxygen systems also depend on operational equipment, and some outputs, such as methane from the Sabatier process, are released to space. Resupply and maintenance remain part of operating a spacecraft habitat.

Life support is also an international operation. NASA identifies five ISS partner agencies: the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), NASA, and Roscosmos. Partner agencies manage and control the hardware they provide. NASA’s FAQ says oxygen-generation and carbon-dioxide-scrubbing life-support systems are present on both the U.S. Orbital Segment and the Russian Segment. Their dissimilar systems add safety and support a larger crew, but the station’s segments are interdependent; they cannot simply be treated as separate, self-sufficient stations. NASA’s ISS FAQ describes the partners and the relationship between the segments.

That combination of recovery, redundancy, cooperation, and resupply is what makes the station workable. No single machine makes the ISS livable: water treatment, air cleaning, oxygen generation, human-health practices, food planning, and international station operations all have to function together.
