High-bandwidth memory (HBM) has become a capacity constraint for AI hardware. A GPU can have a finished compute die and still be delayed if enough qualified HBM stacks, advanced packaging capacity, or final assembly slots are unavailable. That bottleneck reduces the number of accelerators that can ship, raises the negotiating power of memory suppliers, and increases the cost and lead time of complete AI servers. It can also tighten ordinary DDR5 and LPDDR5 supply when manufacturers redirect wafer capacity toward HBM.
The result is not a fixed, publicly measurable percentage added to every GPU’s price. HBM affects prices indirectly through scarce capacity, qualification requirements, contracts, packaging, system integration, and competition for finished servers. Understanding those links is more useful than treating HBM as a simple line item on a GPU bill of materials.
What HBM is and why AI accelerators need it
HBM is a stacked DRAM technology placed beside an AI accelerator and connected through an advanced package. Instead of relying on a narrow set of conventional memory channels, an accelerator accesses many parallel connections to several memory stacks. This design provides very high memory bandwidth in a relatively compact package, which is important for training and serving large AI models that repeatedly move weights, activations, and intermediate data.

The accelerator, package, memory controller, interposer or bridge, HBM stacks, and firmware must be designed and qualified as a system. A server maker cannot usually solve an HBM shortage by buying a different commodity memory module at the last minute.

Each generation also has different electrical, thermal, packaging, and validation requirements. HBM3E and HBM4 therefore represent more than a branding change: they require compatible accelerator designs, stack construction, testing, and platform qualification. The relevant purchasing question is not simply how many gigabytes a stack contains, but whether the exact generation and configuration have been qualified for the target accelerator and server.
Where the HBM supply chain can break
AI memory passes through several linked capacity pools. A shortage at any one of them can hold back a finished accelerator even when the other stages have spare output.

This chain explains why “GPU supply” and “HBM supply” are not separate problems. The accelerator vendor needs a qualified combination, and a server integrator needs enough complete combinations to build a repeatable configuration.
How an HBM shortage reaches GPU prices
- AI demand increases accelerator orders. Cloud providers and other technology companies expand AI-server capital spending, increasing requests for accelerators with large HBM configurations.
- Memory and packaging capacity become scarce. HBM uses DRAM wafers and advanced packaging and test resources that have limited short-term flexibility.
- Suppliers allocate output. Customers must qualify a supplier’s stacks for a specific accelerator. Long-term agreements and allocation decisions determine who receives capacity during a sold-out period.
- Pricing visibility improves for memory suppliers. When output is booked, suppliers can negotiate with greater confidence. Micron said in 2024 investor material: “Our HBM is sold out for calendar 2024 and 2025, with pricing already determined for this time frame.” That statement described its bookings at the time; it is not a promise about availability in every later year.
- Accelerator volume can be capped. If compute dies are available but matched HBM stacks are not, the vendor cannot ship the intended number of complete packages.
- System prices and lead times rise. Buyers compete for a smaller number of qualified accelerators and finished servers. Vendors may raise prices, prioritize contracted customers, or quote longer delivery windows.
HBM is therefore one contributor to GPU pricing rather than a separately published surcharge. Public manufacturer statements do not establish an auditable percentage of a named GPU’s retail price that comes from HBM. The final price also reflects the compute die, package and substrate, board, networking, power delivery, cooling, software support, vendor margin, distribution, and market demand.

What manufacturers have disclosed about demand and capacity
SK hynix results and roadmap
SK hynix reported 2024 revenue of 66.2 trillion won, operating profit of 23.5 trillion won, and net profit of 19.8 trillion won. The company attributed the record results to strong AI-memory demand and said it would expand HBM3E supply while developing HBM4.
For the third quarter of 2024, SK hynix reported revenue of 17.5731 trillion won and operating profit of 7.03 trillion won. HBM represented 30% of its DRAM revenue in that quarter, and the company forecast a 40% share in the fourth quarter. Those percentages describe the company’s DRAM revenue mix, not the proportion of all memory sold in the market.
SK hynix also said demand for HBM and high-density server DRAM would continue to grow as global technology companies expanded AI-server investment. Its stated plan was to supply HBM3E and HBM4 simultaneously. In a FY25 results release issued in 2026, management described the goal as becoming “not merely as a product supplier, but as a core infrastructure partner in the AI era, enabling customers to meet their AI performance requirements.”

Micron’s booked HBM output
Micron’s statement that its HBM was sold out for calendar years 2024 and 2025, with pricing already determined for that period, is direct evidence of advance commitments and limited near-term flexibility. It does not mean every HBM product or every supplier was unavailable to every buyer, and it does not identify the price of any particular GPU. It does show why accelerator designers and server companies seek qualification and capacity reservations well before a product launch.

Server demand and the 2025 capacity question
Micron projected mid- to high-single-digit server-unit shipment growth in calendar 2024, driven by AI servers. Its data-center portfolio included HBM, DDR5, high-capacity DIMMs, Compute Express Link (CXL), and data-center SSDs, illustrating that AI infrastructure uses both accelerator-attached memory and conventional server memory.
Compal’s 2024 annual report said major cloud infrastructure companies increased 2025 capital expenditure for AI and that HBM demand remained strong. It warned that SK hynix and Micron could remain fully booked in 2025 even after shifting capacity from DDR5 and LPDDR5 toward HBM. The implication is important: expanding HBM output can relieve accelerator constraints while tightening memory availability for other systems.
Why HBM shortages can delay complete AI servers
A server may be delayed even when its main GPU is available. Integrators must match several elements:
- Qualified HBM generation, stack count, capacity, and bandwidth for the accelerator.
- Host-server DDR5 or high-capacity DIMMs sized for model staging, operating-system workloads, data preprocessing, and orchestration.
- Power-delivery hardware capable of supporting accelerators at their specified sustained load.
- Cooling, airflow, liquid-cooling components, and rack-level thermal management.
- High-speed networking, switches, cables, and storage sized for distributed training or inference.
- Firmware and validation for the exact accelerator, memory, board, and chassis combination.
When one item is missing, an integrator may hold the whole configuration rather than ship a partially qualified system. Buyers can consequently see a longer lead time for a rack or cluster than for an individual accelerator. Contracted cloud customers may receive allocated capacity first, while smaller buyers are quoted later delivery or offered a different configuration.

How HBM reallocation affects ordinary memory
HBM and conventional server memory share upstream DRAM resources. Moving wafer capacity toward HBM can reduce the output available for DDR5 and LPDDR5, particularly while suppliers are adding new capacity or changing product mixes. That does not mean every PC or server will experience the same shortage, but it creates upward pressure when demand for ordinary memory is already strong.
For a conventional server refresh, the relevant risk may therefore be the price or availability of high-capacity DDR5 DIMMs rather than HBM itself. AI clusters face both exposures: HBM attached to the accelerator and DDR5 or other host memory in the server. A plan that reserves only GPUs can still fail at deployment if the host-memory allocation is not secured.
Comparing AI infrastructure options
When evaluating an accelerator or server purchase, compare the complete configuration rather than the accelerator list price alone.

How buyers can reduce HBM-related delivery risk
- Define the workload first. Record model size, context length, batch size, training or inference mode, target throughput, and acceptable latency. These determine the required HBM capacity and bandwidth.
- Request a bill of materials for the complete system. Ask for accelerator model, HBM generation and capacity, host-memory type and quantity, networking, storage, power, and cooling. Do not accept “GPU available” as proof that a deployable server is available.
- Ask which memory suppliers are qualified. Confirm whether alternate HBM sources are production-qualified or merely on a future roadmap. Qualification status matters more than a supplier’s theoretical manufacturing capacity.
- Separate allocation from an estimate. Obtain the period covered by the quote, the quantity reserved, the conditions that could change the date, and whether the commitment applies to chips, servers, or racks.
- Reserve host memory as well as HBM. Secure DDR5 or high-capacity DIMMs in the same purchasing cycle so a shift toward HBM does not create a second bottleneck.
- Validate facility constraints early. Check rack power, cooling, floor loading, networking, and electrical work before accepting a delivery date.
- Model alternatives by workload output. Compare throughput, usable HBM, utilization, and total operating cost. A system with a different HBM configuration may deliver better value if it avoids a long allocation queue or expensive facility changes.
When will HBM4 capacity be available?
The available company statements establish an HBM4 development and supply roadmap, not a universal date when any buyer can order unlimited HBM4. SK hynix said it planned to supply HBM3E and HBM4 simultaneously, but availability depends on the accelerator design, supplier qualification, packaging capacity, and customer allocation. A product announcement or sampling milestone should not be treated as broad server availability.

For a purchase decision, ask the vendor for the specific HBM4 stack configuration, qualified accelerator, production status, committed quantity, and ship window. If those details are not provided, treat HBM4 as a roadmap option rather than capacity you can count on. HBM3E may have a broader installed qualification base, while HBM4 may offer a future performance path; the better choice depends on the workload and the certainty of supply.
What the supply chain means for AI infrastructure economics
HBM scarcity changes the economics at several levels. Memory suppliers gain pricing leverage when output is booked. Accelerator vendors may limit shipments to the number of complete packages they can assemble. Server companies may prioritize large contracts and quote longer lead times. Data-center operators may need additional power and cooling investment before they can use the hardware. Meanwhile, redirecting DRAM capacity toward HBM can raise the cost or reduce the availability of memory used by non-AI systems.
These effects interact, so the most reliable financial comparison is total cost per useful workload delivered: the complete server or cluster, deployment work, facility upgrades, software, expected utilization, and the cost of waiting for supply. A GPU’s advertised price alone cannot reveal whether an option is economical or deliverable.
