In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, an Echo is a copy of an object or monster Zelda has learned with the Tri Rod. She can recreate that copy to make a platform, build a route, solve a puzzle, or call a monster to fight beside her. Echoes are not crafted from ingredients: the main constraint Nintendo highlights is the amount of energy Tri has available.

What is an Echo?

An Echo is an imitation of an object or enemy found in Hyrule. Zelda uses the Tri Rod, with Tri’s help, to learn an Echo; after that, she can create it again when she needs it. In practical terms, the mechanic lets you copy something from the world and place a usable version of it into the environment.

Nintendo’s official product page describes the objects and enemies Zelda can imitate, while Nintendo’s 2024 Ask the Developer interview explains the premise as “Gameplay where a player can copy something from the field and paste it somewhere else.” That wording is Nintendo’s editorial footnote, not a quotation from one of the interview’s speakers.

The game’s official title is The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. “Echoes of Hyrule” is a convenient description of the system, not the game’s title. Nintendo announced the game for Nintendo Switch, with a release date of September 26, 2024.

How do you learn, create, and erase Echoes?

Nintendo’s product page gives the basic controls. Learning adds an object or monster’s Echo to Zelda’s learned set; creating places a copy in the world. The process does not call for collecting ingredients or assembling a recipe.

  1. Learn: Press ZR to learn an Echo from an object or monster the game allows Zelda to copy.
  2. Create: Press Y to make a learned Echo. Choose one that fits the immediate task and Tri’s available energy.
  3. Erase: Press ZR to erase an Echo from the field. Hold ZR to erase all Echoes currently on the field.

These are the controls Nintendo lists; they describe the core learn, place, and clear actions rather than every contextual prompt or selection detail. Learning an Echo and creating one are separate parts of the loop: once learned, it can be recreated without going back to gather crafting materials. Nintendo’s October 3, 2024 tips article says the game contains over a hundred Echoes. That is Nintendo’s broad count, not a precise total or a promise that every Echo is available from the beginning.

That difference from crafting is useful to remember while playing. With a recipe-based system, you might need to find ingredients again before making another item. Echoes instead let Zelda reuse an imitation she has learned; the resource Nintendo calls out for creating them is Tri’s energy capacity. You still need to learn an Echo before you can recreate it, so an interesting object or enemy is not automatically available as an Echo from the start.

The basic loop is therefore repeatable: learn an eligible object or monster, decide whether its function suits the current situation, then create it if Tri has enough energy. If you need to change direction, ZR can clear an Echo, and holding ZR clears all Echoes currently on the field. The controls make it possible to revise a setup rather than treating a placed Echo as a permanent construction.

What can you do with Echoes?

The most useful way to think about Echoes is by the problem they help solve. An Echo can function as part of the terrain, as a response to a puzzle, or as a combat helper. Some examples may fit more than one role; the point is to choose by function rather than search for a universally strongest Echo.

Traversal and building

Some Echoes change what Zelda can reach. Nintendo’s product page and August 5, 2024 release announcement give water blocks as an example: Zelda can use them to rise toward higher ledges. Beds can be stacked to form a bridge or staircase, turning an ordinary object into a route through the space.

When a ledge or gap is the obstacle, consider whether a placed Echo can add height or create a surface to cross. These examples show the system’s basic building logic, not a guarantee that any arrangement will work in every location. The useful question is what the object’s shape and placement can do for the route you need.

Think of this as improvised building rather than a conventional building mode. The examples Nintendo gives start with familiar objects, but what matters is how an Echo can function in the place where you create it. A bed may become part of a staircase or bridge, while water blocks can help Zelda rise. Those are distinct traversal jobs: one makes a route across or up, and the other helps with elevation.

Puzzle solving

Echoes let Zelda respond to puzzle spaces with copies of things already encountered. A platform-like object may help reach a switch or ledge; another object may interact with the scene in a different way. Nintendo’s examples establish the broader approach—try an Echo that changes positioning or affects the environment—but do not establish a single required Echo for every puzzle.

Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma described the intended appeal in the 2024 Ask the Developer interview: “Even when it comes to solving puzzles – in a game in The Legend of Zelda series, having the excitement of solving puzzles in your own unique way makes the game ‘Legend of Zelda-like’.” The design goal is room for independent solutions, rather than a single prescribed combination.

For a puzzle, start by identifying what you need to change: Zelda’s position, a route through the space, or something about the environment. Then consider which learned Echo has a relevant function. This is a way to organize your thinking, not a hint that one specific object will solve every puzzle. A solution that works for one room may not suit a different layout, and the game’s stated design intent leaves space for trying your own approach.

Combat and improvisation

Zelda can create Echoes of monsters she has encountered and have them fight alongside her. That makes a monster Echo an ally she can call on, rather than merely another object to place. Nintendo’s product page also describes using a rock Echo as an attack.

Nintendo’s September 20, 2024 gameplay guide offers further examples of experimentation: a rock, flying monsters, meat to distract an enemy, or environmental fire. Treat these as possibilities to try, not guaranteed tactics or an exhaustive combat manual. The right option depends on the encounter and what Zelda has learned; a solution that works in one situation need not be the best choice in another.

These examples also show why Echoes are not limited to making platforms. Some can contribute to a fight directly, while other objects or features can be used in an improvised way. Nintendo’s guide suggests meat as a possible distraction and environmental fire as something to use, but it does not present either as a universal answer. Look at the surroundings and the enemy, then test an idea that fits what is happening.

How does Tri’s energy limit Echo use?

Creating Echoes draws on Tri’s energy capacity, so the choice is not only which Echo might help but also what it costs to create. Nintendo’s October 3, 2024 tips article illustrates the display with an Echo costing one energy level: it uses one triangle of Tri’s available energy. That example establishes that Echoes can have energy costs, but it is not a complete cost formula or a cost list for every Echo.

Because costs can differ, do not assume that the most elaborate-looking or most useful-seeming Echo is always the best one to create. Check the energy display and consider whether a lower-cost option can solve the same immediate problem. The energy example from Nintendo explains how to read one cost; it does not support a universal fixed cap or a ranking of all Echo costs.

A practical resource check is simple: before creating an Echo, look at Tri’s available energy and the cost shown for the option you have in mind. If the cost is more than you want to spend on that moment, consider another learned Echo that can do a similar job. This is a decision-making suggestion based on the energy constraint, not a claim that every challenge has an alternate low-cost solution.

Is there a best Echo combination?

There is no single combination established as best for every player or situation. Echo usefulness depends on the obstacle or enemy, the Echoes Zelda has learned so far, and Tri’s available energy. A bed may help make a staircase, water blocks may help with height, and a monster Echo may assist in a fight—but those are examples of different jobs, not a tier list.

Nintendo’s September 20, 2024 guide says: “It’s more about building up your assortment of echoes, learning how you can use them, and experimenting to find tactics or solutions that are fun or silly to you.” That is Nintendo’s editorial guidance, not a named developer quotation. It captures the intended decision process: build a varied set, notice what each Echo can do, and test an idea that suits the current problem.

It can help to compare options along two axes rather than rank them. First, ask what job an Echo does: traversal and building, puzzle solving, or combat. Second, check its energy cost against Tri’s capacity. The best choice for getting higher may not help in a fight, and a strong option for one encounter may be a poor fit for a different obstacle. Your learned Echoes and available energy also affect what you can use at a given point.

A practical way to choose what to create

  1. Name the obstacle. Decide whether the problem is reaching a ledge, crossing a gap, handling a puzzle, or facing an enemy.
  2. Match the function. For height, consider a water block; for a route, consider stacking beds; for a fight, consider a monster Echo or an improvised environmental option such as the examples Nintendo gives.
  3. Check Tri’s energy. The energy display matters because creating Echoes draws on Tri’s capacity, and costs can differ.
  4. Try a solution and adjust. Nintendo frames experimentation as part of play. If an approach does not solve the problem, clear current Echoes with a ZR hold and try another idea.

This is a flexible way to approach the mechanic, not a required sequence for every puzzle or encounter. Its value is that it keeps the decision tied to the actual problem instead of treating Echoes as a fixed list of strongest-to-weakest choices.

Does amiibo affect the Echo system?

Amiibo is a separate, optional feature, not a way to learn or create Echoes. Nintendo Support says the amiibo feature unlocks during play, generally about an hour in. After it is available, compatible Zelda-series amiibo can provide items such as smoothie ingredients or variant outfits. Nintendo says you can scan each figure once per day, with a maximum of three figures per day.

Those rewards are separate from the Echo loop: the core mechanic remains learning imitations with the Tri Rod and recreating them with Tri’s energy. If you are considering an amiibo for this game, check Nintendo Support’s compatibility guidance and remember the daily scan limits. No particular figure is required to use Echoes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need materials to create an Echo?

No. Once Zelda has learned an Echo, she can recreate it without gathering crafting ingredients. Creating Echoes draws on Tri’s energy capacity instead.

How many Echoes are in Echoes of Wisdom?

Nintendo’s October 3, 2024 tips article describes the game as having over a hundred Echoes. Nintendo does not give a precise total in that statement, and it does not mean every Echo is available at the beginning.

What buttons learn, create, and erase Echoes?

Nintendo’s product page lists ZR to learn an Echo, Y to create one, and ZR to erase one from the field. Hold ZR to erase all Echoes currently on the field.

What is the best Echo combination?

There is no universal best combination established for every situation. Choose by function—such as traversal, puzzle solving, or combat—and consider which Echoes Zelda has learned and how much energy Tri has available.

Can amiibo unlock or provide Echoes?

Nintendo describes amiibo rewards as items such as smoothie ingredients or variant outfits, not Echoes. The feature unlocks during play, generally about an hour in; compatible Zelda-series figures can be scanned once each per day, up to three figures per day.

The Bottom Line

Echoes are reusable imitations, not crafted items: Zelda learns objects and monsters with the Tri Rod, then creates them with Y to build routes, approach puzzles, or get help in combat. Match each Echo to the job, watch Tri’s energy, and experiment—Nintendo designed the system to support different solutions rather than one best combination.
