The Burlap challenge in Dressmaker is a resource-and-requirements puzzle, not a rule that every garment must be made entirely from Burlap. Burlap is free and available from the start, but it adds strong Uncomfortable and Patterned scores while reducing 16 of the game’s 22 tracked tags. Read the commission’s exact requirement lines, then decide whether Burlap should be the whole garment or only one part of a mixed-material design.
What Burlap does
Burlap has four important properties in the extracted game data for Dressmaker: it costs 0 gold per metre, is tagged Brown, adds Uncomfortable +50, and adds Patterned +10. It also applies penalties to 16 of the game’s 22 tracked style tags. Those penalties can make glamour, romance, elegance, floral and related targets harder to reach, even when the fabric’s colour or comfort-related effects are useful.

The values above are reported by DressmakerCompanion’s extracted data. The Burlap page identifies game-data build 25482629 and lists public build 410; a later patch can change a requirement or the resulting totals, so the live commission screen should take precedence over an older recipe.

How the challenge fits the normal commission loop
There is no separate Burlap-only workbench. You complete a normal commission and use Burlap as the material decision. The sequence is:

- Read the brief and record every requirement, including “at least,” “at most,” colour, fabric-share, accessory-count, trim and quality lines.
- Draft the bodice, skirt, sleeves and collar. Pattern pieces contribute style points, so choose them before locking in a fabric mix.
- Buy or select fabric, using Burlap where its Brown, Uncomfortable, Patterned or zero-cost effects help.
- Cut the pieces with the grain.
- Sew carefully; cutting and sewing quality are separate checks from style requirements.
- Decorate with accessories such as flowers, jewels or trim when the brief requires a count that fabric alone cannot provide.
- Inspect the completed requirement bars and quality result before delivering the garment.
This order matters because a fabric can satisfy one line while damaging another. A pattern may supply enough style points to offset Burlap’s penalties, but it cannot automatically satisfy a percentage-of-fabric or accessory-count condition.
When a 100% Burlap dress works
Tomb Raider
A validated Tomb Raider solution uses 100% Burlap. It costs 0 gold, reaches Workwear 50 and Simple 45, and meets the listed quality threshold. Its known drawback is a 10-point reduction to Elaborate. This is a good example of a brief whose pattern and material totals align with Burlap’s strengths.

Not Haughty

These examples are build-specific solutions, not universal templates. If your current brief shows different thresholds, colours or quality lines, reproduce those requirements instead of copying an older garment.

When to mix Burlap with other materials
Use a mixed-material garment when the brief asks for something Burlap cannot cover on its own. Companion database examples include commissions where Burlap is only one share of the garment and silk, a specific colour proportion, sequins, flowers or other style requirements supply the missing conditions.
- Fabric percentages: If a brief requires a minimum or maximum share of a fabric, calculate the share across the relevant pieces before cutting. A 100% Burlap design cannot satisfy a requirement for another material.
- Colour requirements: Burlap contributes Brown, but it cannot provide a different required colour. Add a fabric with the needed colour and verify the displayed percentage.
- Style tags Burlap lowers: Select pattern pieces and complementary fabrics that restore tags reduced by Burlap, rather than assuming its Uncomfortable bonus will compensate for every loss.
- Accessory counts: Add the specified number of flowers, jewels, sequins or trim items. These are count requirements, not automatic consequences of fabric selection.
Choose the pattern first, then use the smallest Burlap share that helps the brief while leaving enough material budget and tag coverage for the remaining lines.

How to make money when you run out of gold
Burlap is useful as an emergency material because it costs nothing. You can create a simple off-the-rack dress and sell the finished garment when you lack gold. Off-the-rack designs have no customer requirement list, so you can avoid commission-specific style targets while using available materials.

Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming Burlap is always bad
Burlap’s penalties are broad, but its Uncomfortable +50, Patterned +10, Brown tag and zero price can be exactly what a brief needs. Check the requirement bars instead of judging the material by appearance.
Assuming a full Burlap dress always passes
Some briefs validate at 100% Burlap; others require another fabric, colour share, decoration or a higher quality result. Treat Tomb Raider and Not Haughty as examples, not guarantees.
Ignoring quality checks
Style totals do not replace workmanship. Cut with the grain and sew carefully, then verify the quality threshold before delivery.
Following an outdated recipe
The Burlap data page records build 25482629 and public build 410, and warns that patches can alter requirements or example totals. If a guide conflicts with the live brief, follow the live brief.
