Quantum Hall data cannot be interpreted from temperature, magnetic field, or disorder in isolation. The perpendicular field sets the Landau-level and filling-factor regime; disorder localizes many states so a Hall plateau can span a finite field interval; and temperature changes how sharply the Hall and longitudinal signals reveal that structure. The combined response is system-dependent: a 2025 theory study finds that plateau width can change nonmonotonically as disorder increases when temperature is included, while a graphene p–n-junction calculation finds disorder destroying plateaus in one regime but helping form them in another.
For every reported plateau or transition, state the material and carrier system, device geometry, temperature, field or filling factor, disorder regime, and measured observable. A Hall resistance near its quantized value is meaningful only alongside the longitudinal resistance and the conditions under which both were recorded.
What a quantum Hall measurement is actually measuring
In the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE), a two-dimensional electron or hole system is placed in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The field quantizes orbital motion into Landau levels. The filling factor, commonly written as ν = nh/(eB) for carrier density n, identifies how many levels are filled (with spin and other degeneracies included according to the material). Sweeping B or changing density therefore moves the system through different integer filling factors.

The transverse, or Hall, resistance Rxy develops plateaus near the quantized values h/(νe2). The longitudinal resistance Rxx is small in the center of a well-developed plateau and rises when the system passes through a plateau transition. Looking at only one trace can hide contact problems, inhomogeneity, or a transition that has not fully localized. In a GaAs quantum Hall resistance-standard device, measurements close to plateau centers showed Hall resistance approaching its nominal value while longitudinal resistance approached zero; the experiment held field, current, and temperature constant and averaged readings to reduce random noise (Journal of Research of the National Institute of Standards and Technology report).

Why the same nominal filling factor can look different
Two samples at the same integer ν need not have the same plateau width or transition sharpness. Carrier density, mobility, sample dimensions, edge contacts, alloy composition, strain, charged impurities, and the precise disorder landscape alter the energies and paths available for transport. A result from a GaAs bar, an InGaAs–InP wafer, and a graphene p–n junction is not interchangeable without those details.
How temperature changes Hall and longitudinal signals
Finite temperature blurs the energy selectivity
At zero temperature, the occupied states have a sharp Fermi edge. Raising temperature broadens that occupation and allows carriers to sample a wider energy range around the chemical potential. In a quantum Hall sample, this can make the sides of a plateau and the peak of Rxx appear less sharp, reduce the apparent precision of Rxy, and change the field interval over which a chosen tolerance is met. The size of the effect depends on the Landau-level spacing, the disorder-broadened density of states, contact heating, and the measurement current; there is no temperature at which quantization universally fails for every material and geometry.
What the GaAs resistance-standard experiment establishes
The GaAs resistance-standard study measured Hall and longitudinal resistance at controlled, constant field, current, and temperature, then averaged measurements to suppress random noise. Its measurement systems operated close to plateau centers, where Rxy approached the nominal quantized value and Rxx approached zero. This is evidence about that device and measurement protocol, not a universal temperature limit or a guarantee that a different sample will behave identically (source).

The InGaAs–InP temperature range is a device-specific observation
An earlier InGaAs–InP experiment measured temperature-dependent quantized Hall behavior from 4.2 to 50 K in the i = 2 plateau region and inferred a substantial density of localized states between Landau levels. The 4.2–50 K interval describes that experiment; it should not be presented as an operating range that applies to all IQHE devices. The inference about localized states also illustrates why temperature data are useful: the way a plateau degrades with temperature contains information about the density of states and transport paths, not merely a thermometer reading (Physical Review B, 1985).
Temperature stability matters as much as the set point
When comparing traces, distinguish a deliberately swept temperature from drift or self-heating. Keep excitation current low enough that Joule heating does not raise the electron temperature above the thermometer reading, allow thermal equilibration at each point, and record whether the quoted temperature is the mixing-chamber, lattice, or inferred electron temperature. A transition that broadens during a field sweep may reflect thermal lag rather than an intrinsic field dependence.
How perpendicular magnetic field selects the quantum Hall regime
Field sets Landau-level spacing and filling factor
Increasing the perpendicular component of B increases Landau-level separation and generally lowers the filling factor at fixed carrier density. Tilting a sample changes the perpendicular and in-plane components differently; the quantization and orbital filling are controlled primarily by the perpendicular component, while an in-plane component can alter spin energetics. Report the actual perpendicular field and density rather than only a magnet current or nominal field setting.

Field sweeps drive plateau-to-plateau transitions
As B is swept, the chemical potential moves through localized and extended portions of the disorder-broadened Landau levels. The Hall trace changes from one quantized plateau to the next, while Rxx develops a transition peak. The transition field is not universal: it depends on carrier density, material parameters, sample geometry, and the particular pair of plateaus being crossed.
What transition studies can and cannot be generalized
A GaAs two-dimensional electron-gas study reported a temperature-independent critical field in its measured longitudinal-resistance transition. A separate 2023 study of spin-split transitions in AlGaAs heterostructures reported a scaling exponent κ = 0.42 ± 0.01 for the alloy-disorder range specified by that work. These are measurements or analyses tied to their samples and transition classes, not a single critical field or exponent for every IQHE system (Physica B, 2023).
Why disorder creates robust plateaus—and why its effect is not one-directional
The standard localization picture
Real samples contain disorder from impurities, alloy fluctuations, interface roughness, strain, and electrostatic inhomogeneity. In the scaling theory of the IQHE, disorder broadens each Landau level into localized states away from a narrow energy region of extended states. When the chemical potential lies among localized states, bulk current is suppressed and chiral edge transport can support a stable Hall plateau. Moving through the extended-state energy produces a localization–delocalization transition and a peak in Rxx. This framework is summarized in the review Scaling theory of the integer quantum Hall effect.

More disorder does not guarantee a narrower or wider plateau
It is tempting to say that disorder either broadens plateaus by creating more localized states or narrows them by damaging transport. Neither is a universal rule. The 2025 Physical Review B theory study finds that disorder and temperature are intrinsically connected and that plateau width can vary nonmonotonically as disorder increases. In other words, the width may grow over one disorder range, reach a maximum or minimum, and then change direction as the balance among localization, level broadening, and thermal occupation shifts. The authors describe this as an intricate interplay rather than a monotonic law (Yi-Thomas, Huang, Sau, and Das Sarma, 2025).
Geometry and carrier polarity can reverse the observed trend
In a graphene p–n junction, the two device edges carry chiral modes whose longitudinal resistances are not generally equal. Theoretical calculations for that geometry found disorder destroying plateaus in a unipolar junction, yet reducing a large resistance and promoting plateau formation in a bipolar junction by mixing edge states. Junction length changes which edge states can interact, so even within graphene the disorder response depends on edge configuration and transport regime. This result should not be transferred to an ordinary single-carrier Hall bar without the same geometry and polarity (Physical Review B 81, 245417).

The usual IQHE account relies on disorder-induced localization to produce a finite field interval of quantized Hall conductance. A 2021 article discusses a different possibility: spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry can generate a plateau in a disorder-free system. That proposal concerns the studied theoretical regime and does not overturn the localization picture used to interpret conventional disordered samples (npj Quantum Materials, 2021).

How temperature, field, and disorder interact in one measurement
The three controls act on overlapping energy and transport scales:
| Variable | Primary role | Typical signature in the measured traces | What must be qualified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perpendicular magnetic field | Selects Landau-level spacing and filling factor; a sweep moves the chemical potential through localized and extended states. | Hall plateaus and longitudinal-resistance peaks at plateau transitions. | Carrier density, field orientation, plateau index, and transition being studied. |
| Temperature | Broadens occupation and activates additional transport through the disorder-broadened spectrum; heating can mimic intrinsic effects. | Less sharp transitions, altered plateau visibility, and temperature-dependent Rxx and Rxy. | Electron versus lattice temperature, equilibration time, current, and whether the value is a sweep or a fixed-temperature measurement. |
| Disorder | Creates localized and extended-state structure; its strength and correlation length alter mobility and level broadening. | Changes plateau width, transition width, and peak amplitude; direction of change can be nonmonotonic. | Disorder source, estimated strength, material, geometry, and whether the result is measured or modeled. |
At fixed temperature, increasing field can move a sample from a poorly resolved regime into a robust plateau by increasing Landau-level separation. At fixed field, raising temperature can erase the same plateau’s sharpness. Changing disorder can either make localization more effective or introduce enough broadening and mixing to obscure quantization. These statements describe mechanisms, not a guaranteed ordering of outcomes for every device.
A measurement workflow that separates the effects
- Characterize the sample first. Record material and carrier type, density, mobility, dimensions, contact layout, gate configuration, and known disorder sources. For a junction, document edge orientation, junction length, and whether transport is unipolar or bipolar.
- Calibrate the field and density. Convert magnet current to the perpendicular magnetic field at the sample and determine density under the actual gate bias. Compute or plot the corresponding filling factor so comparisons use the same physical regime.
- Control excitation. Use a small AC or DC current, verify that changing current does not move the transition or raise the electron temperature, and state the excitation frequency and filtering when precision matters.
- Stabilize temperature. Wait for equilibration, monitor temperature during the field sweep, and repeat at several fixed temperatures. Separate intentional temperature dependence from drift and self-heating.
- Measure both tensor components. Acquire Rxy and Rxx simultaneously when possible. A plateau claim should show Hall quantization together with a low longitudinal signal, not a flat Hall trace alone.
- Define plateau width before comparing it. State whether width means field interval, density interval, filling-factor interval, or the range meeting a numerical error criterion. Use the same criterion for every temperature or disorder setting.
- Repeat field sweeps in both directions. Hysteresis, charge rearrangement, or contact heating can make an up-sweep differ from a down-sweep. Average only after checking that the traces are reproducible.
- Map disorder deliberately when possible. Compare devices, gate-tuned impurity configurations, alloy concentrations, or controlled irradiation only when the disorder change is independently characterized. Do not infer disorder strength from plateau width alone.
How to compare papers, devices, or datasets without mixing unlike results
Use the following reporting matrix before ranking plateau quality or claiming that one variable is responsible:
| Comparison axis | Questions to record |
|---|---|
| Material and carriers | GaAs, InGaAs–InP, graphene, or another system? Electrons, holes, or both across a junction? |
| Geometry | Hall bar, resistance-standard structure, p–n junction, edge contacts, junction length, and current path? |
| Thermal conditions | Temperature range, stability, electron-temperature calibration, and excitation current? |
| Magnetic regime | Perpendicular field range, density, filling factor, spin resolution, and sweep direction? |
| Disorder | Impurity, alloy, interface, electrostatic, or modeled disorder? What strength or concentration range? |
| Observable and definition | Hall resistance, longitudinal resistance, conductivity, transition width, scaling exponent, or a fitted activation parameter? |
| Evidence type | Direct measurement, numerical model, analytical inference, or an interpretation of another signal? |
For example, the 4.2–50 K InGaAs–InP observation, the GaAs resistance-standard data near a plateau center, the graphene p–n-junction disorder calculation, and the AlGaAs κ result answer different questions. Placing their numbers in one universal ranking would discard the conditions that give each number meaning.
Troubleshooting common anomalous traces
- Hall plateau is flat but Rxx remains large: check whether the system is actually at a plateau center, inspect contact placement and longitudinal voltage pickup, and verify that the Hall flatness is not caused by lead miswiring or averaging across a transition.
- Both signals broaden when temperature is raised: test for electron heating by reducing current, lengthening settling time, and comparing up- and down-sweeps. If the effect tracks the calibrated electron temperature, it is more likely intrinsic thermal smearing than field noise.
- Plateau width changes direction as disorder is increased: do not force a monotonic explanation. Check the 2025 theory’s warning about nonmonotonic width and identify whether the disorder change also altered density, mobility, or temperature.
- Opposite edges of a graphene junction disagree: unequal edge resistances are expected in some chiral-edge configurations. Confirm carrier polarity on each side, junction length, and whether disorder-induced edge-state mixing is the relevant regime.
- Transition field appears temperature-independent: report it as a result for the measured sample and transition. A temperature-independent critical field has been observed in a GaAs study, but it does not establish a universal critical field for other materials or filling factors.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A strong report might say: “In this GaAs device, at density n, perpendicular field range B, and stabilized electron temperature T, Rxy met the stated quantization criterion while Rxx approached zero. Increasing temperature broadened the transition under the same current. The observed plateau-width change with disorder was measured over the specified disorder range and was not assumed to continue outside it.” That wording identifies the system, geometry, controls, observable, and evidence boundary instead of presenting a material-specific trend as a law of the IQHE.
