Technology can help people, manufacturers, and energy systems coordinate more effectively—but it does not guarantee cleaner power, resilient supply chains, or broadly shared opportunity. The available official records do not establish an event or session with the exact title “Technology As Power to Empower, Renewable Growth, and Global Supply Chains at Economic Forum.” The subject is best treated as a policy and industry theme, informed by related work reported by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), and the European Commission.
How technology can connect industrial change with human opportunity
Digital tools can make information about production, demand, inventory, and energy use more visible to the organizations that need to act on it. That visibility can support better coordination across a value chain and help manufacturers adapt processes as conditions change. The benefit depends on implementation: collecting data is not the same as using it well, and a more connected system still relies on reliable infrastructure, capable workers, and accountable decisions.
The WEF’s Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains describes its work through four areas: resilient value chains, technology and innovation, people-centric transformation, and sustainable systems. Together, they offer a useful way to judge industrial technology initiatives: ask not only whether a system is more productive, but whether it is adaptable, supports workers, and contributes to environmental goals.

In the WEF Annual Report 2024–2025, published on 5 September 2025, the Forum said 36 new sites joined its Global Lighthouse Network during the reporting period, bringing its total to 189. This is a count of sites in the Forum’s network, not a measure of all advanced manufacturing facilities or proof that every factory adopting new technology achieves the same results.

What technology can—and cannot—do for renewable growth
Renewable power growth involves more than installing generation equipment. Projects also need infrastructure, materials, planning, and coordination among stakeholders. Digital and industrial technologies may assist with those tasks, but they cannot by themselves resolve constraints such as access to critical materials or competing demands on land and infrastructure.
The WEF’s 2024–2025 annual report describes work on clean power, industrial decarbonization, renewable infrastructure, and critical minerals for the energy transition. It also says public- and private-sector leaders developed Five Principles for Responsible Deployment of Renewables Infrastructure to guide projects toward benefits for people and the planet. Those are stated aims for responsible deployment, not evidence that every project achieves them.
The European Commission’s 2023 document C(2023) 2178 identifies strategic dependencies in critical raw materials and digital technologies as issues for the EU’s green and digital transitions. That framing matters: renewable expansion and digitalization can depend on materials and technologies whose availability, sourcing, and supply are strategic concerns. Resilience therefore means considering dependencies as well as adopting new tools.

How supply-chain resilience differs from efficiency
An efficient supply chain may minimize cost or inventory under expected conditions. A resilient one must also be able to identify dependencies and adjust when conditions change. Better information can help reveal where materials, components, or production capacity are concentrated, but information alone does not create alternative suppliers or remove a bottleneck.
The WEF report says its Centre brings together business, government, academia, and civil society. During the reporting period, the Centre launched Beyond Cost: Country Readiness for the Future of Manufacturing and Supply Chains, which includes a Global Readiness Index intended to inform decisions about value chains and production footprints. Its emphasis on readiness beyond cost reflects a practical trade-off: a low-cost location may not be the only relevant factor when organizations consider disruption, access to skills, and strategic dependencies.
Managing that trade-off calls for decisions that can be tested against several questions:

- Visibility: Can organizations identify important dependencies and respond to disruptions?
- Climate: Does the plan support clean-energy deployment while accounting for the environmental footprint of the technology itself?
- Access: Who can use the infrastructure and services, and who may be left out?
- Workforce: Are workers given routes to develop the skills that new systems require?
- Accountability: Who is responsible for assessing impacts and managing critical dependencies?
Why skills and access belong in the technology conversation
New industrial systems change work as well as equipment. The WEF annual report associates an announced Industry 4.0 career-path initiative with addressing a projected shortfall of two million workers in US manufacturing. That figure is a projection reported by the Forum, not a current count of vacancies.

The word describes the initiative’s reported reach; it should not be read as a count of verified job placements or lasting employment outcomes. For digital access, the Forum also reports that the EDISON Alliance connected more than one billion people in over 100 countries to essential digital services in healthcare, education, and finance. These figures describe distinct initiatives and reported outcomes, not a single measure of whether technology’s benefits are shared equally.
Kiva Allgood, managing director of the WEF Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains, described its purpose as driving “actionable solutions” and examining the “how” of responsible industry transformation amid geopolitical uncertainty. The statement explains the Centre’s stated focus; it is not an independent assessment of results.

The environmental cost of digital systems
Digitalization has an environmental footprint as well as potential uses in energy and manufacturing. Devices require materials and manufacturing; digital infrastructure uses energy. The IGF’s 2023 reports discuss digital sustainability, including device impacts, energy use, sustainable manufacturing, and cooperation among governments, businesses, research institutions, and individuals.
IGF material cites a figure of 730 million tonnes of CO₂, described as 1.4% of global emissions, and attributes it to an Ericsson report. Because that figure is presented through the IGF’s attribution rather than independently verified here against the original Ericsson publication, it should be understood as a secondary-reported estimate. Its relevance is the broader point: technology’s enabling role does not remove the need to account for the footprint of devices and infrastructure.
What a credible technology-led transition should show
A credible plan links technology adoption to outcomes people can assess: more adaptable supply chains, renewable infrastructure deployed responsibly, workers able to develop relevant skills, and digital access that reaches beyond already well-served groups. It also accounts for materials, energy use, and strategic dependencies rather than treating them as external concerns.
The WEF, IGF, and European Commission materials describe frameworks, reported initiative figures, and policy concerns—not proof that a particular economic forum session occurred or that technology alone will deliver these outcomes. The strongest case for technology as a source of empowerment is therefore conditional: tools can improve coordination and expand capability, but governance, workforce investment, access, and environmental accountability determine who benefits and at what cost.
