Tailscale separates three jobs that are often confused: an identity provider authenticates a person or workload, device-held cryptographic keys identify each participating node, and a control plane coordinates policy and connectivity. The data plane then carries packets between approved nodes, normally over a direct WireGuard connection.
The coordination service is not the normal path for application traffic. If a direct path cannot be established, a DERP relay may forward the packets, but the payload remains WireGuard-encrypted. A subnet router and an exit node also solve different problems: one exposes selected private-network routes, while the other carries a client’s general, non-Tailscale internet traffic through a chosen tailnet device.
The four ideas you need to keep separate
Questions such as “Can Tailscale see my traffic?” and “Does Tailscale route everything through its servers?” become easier when the architecture is divided into four parts:
- User identity: an identity provider verifies who is signing in.
- Node identity: a particular device or process proves its identity with cryptographic keys.
- Control plane: coordination services exchange discovery information, public keys, network configuration, and policy.
- Data plane: participating devices encrypt, decrypt, forward, and monitor packet flows.
These layers are related but not interchangeable. Being authenticated as a user does not automatically grant access to every device. Access depends on the node involved, the tailnet’s policy, approvals for advertised routes, and whether the client has selected a special route such as an exit node.

Tailscale’s identity documentation describes this relationship in detail at Tailscale identity. Its explanation of the two planes is at Control and data planes.
How user identity becomes device identity
1. An identity provider authenticates the user
Tailscale delegates user authentication to a native or custom OpenID Connect identity provider. The provider handles the sign-in event and establishes which person, service account, or other authenticated entity is requesting access. Tailscale is not replacing that provider with a separate password database in the flow described by its identity documentation.
2. Tailscale binds the login to a node
After authentication, Tailscale associates the authenticated entity with a particular device and its tailnet. This produces a node identity: not merely “this is a valid account,” but “this specific participating device is acting for that authenticated entity in this tailnet.” Machine and node key pairs underpin that association and are used when the node proves itself to peers.
3. Policy limits what the node can reach
The resulting identity is still subject to tailnet policy. Policy determines which nodes or resources may communicate, which advertised routes are usable, and whether a device may serve as an exit node. A successful sign-in therefore does not mean unrestricted network access.
This distinction is useful during incident review. An administrator may need to ask both “Which user authenticated?” and “Which node key participated?” Those answers can differ when one person uses several devices, when a device is reauthenticated, or when a workload acts on behalf of a user.
What keys stay on devices, and what the control plane receives
Each node keeps its machine and node private keys locally. Tailscale’s identity overview states that those private keys do not leave the device. The control plane distributes public keys, subject to the permissions that govern which nodes are allowed to communicate.

This arrangement lets peers authenticate one another without sending a private key to a coordination service. A node can present cryptographic proof during connection establishment while retaining the secret material needed to create that proof. The public information is useful for discovery and authorization; it is not a copy of the private key.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Key distribution is therefore a controlled operation rather than a global directory exposed to every participant. A node receives the information needed for permitted peers and configuration. Tailnet policy remains part of the security boundary because it determines which public keys and routes are made available to that node.
How WireGuard protects the data plane
Tailscale uses WireGuard as its primary data-plane mechanism. Nodes use their public and private keys to authenticate peers and establish a symmetric session key. Packets exchanged after that setup are encrypted and decrypted by the participating devices.
The data plane is where packet handling occurs: encryption before transmission, decryption at the destination, forwarding when a node is acting as a router, and connection-health handling. The control plane may tell nodes how to find one another and which keys or routes are permitted, but it is not the ordinary application-payload path.
The official Tailscale encryption explanation describes the connection sequence: devices may initially use DERP while they coordinate, then attempt to establish a direct connection. If direct connectivity is impossible, the encrypted WireGuard traffic can continue through a relay.

| Plane | Primary responsibilities | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Control plane | Device discovery, connection coordination, public-key distribution, network configuration, and access-policy distribution. | It is not the normal carrier for application payload packets. |
| Data plane | Packet encryption and decryption, forwarding, and connection operation between participating nodes. | It is not a user-login directory or a replacement for tailnet policy. |
This separation answers the broad question “Does Tailscale route all traffic through its servers?” No: the coordination service supplies information and policy, while nodes carry the traffic. A separate class of service, DERP, can relay packets when a direct path is unavailable.

Direct connections and DERP relays
When a direct path works
After discovery and key exchange, Tailscale prefers a peer-to-peer path when network conditions allow it. In that case, encrypted packets travel between the nodes without a DERP server forwarding the payload.
When DERP is needed
Network address translation, firewalls, or other connectivity restrictions can prevent a direct path. Tailscale’s DERP server documentation describes DERP as a coordination and relay mechanism. It can handle discovery messages and, as a fallback, forward encrypted WireGuard packets.
What the relay can and cannot read
A DERP relay forwards the already-encrypted WireGuard payload. Because node private keys remain on the devices, the relay cannot decrypt that payload. That is a narrower statement than “the relay sees nothing”: a relay necessarily handles connection information and packet-forwarding metadata needed to operate the service. The encryption guarantee applies to the WireGuard payload, not to every possible endpoint, timing, or operational detail.

Subnet routers and exit nodes are different routes
| Feature | Traffic destination | What must happen |
|---|---|---|
| Subnet router | Specified private-network prefixes, such as a home or office LAN. | A node advertises routes; an administrator or configured auto-approver permits them; policy allows the relevant peers. Devices on the private network do not all need Tailscale installed. |
| Exit node | A client’s non-Tailscale internet traffic, sent through a selected tailnet device. | The device advertises itself, an administrator or auto-approver authorizes it, the client opts in, and policy permits use through autogroup:internet. |
Subnet router: reach selected private networks
A subnet router advertises one or more private routes to the tailnet. This is useful for reaching a printer, server, camera, or other endpoint where installing Tailscale on every device is impractical. Only the advertised prefixes are affected; ordinary internet traffic is not automatically sent through the subnet router.
Route advertisement and use are separate authorization decisions. The advertised route may require administrator approval, and the tailnet policy must permit the requesting node to use it. The device forwarding the packet is part of the data path, while the control plane distributes the route and policy information that makes the path possible. Tailscale’s device-management guidance is at Manage devices using the web interface.

Exit node: carry general internet traffic through a tailnet device
An exit node is selected by a client when it wants non-Tailscale internet traffic to leave through another tailnet device. The exit-node device must advertise that role, an administrator or configured auto-approver must allow it, and the client must explicitly opt in. Policy must permit the use of autogroup:internet.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →By default, traffic already directed to a subnet router or an app connector is not captured by the exit node. Local-network access while using an exit node is configurable, so a client’s behavior on its attached LAN depends on that setting rather than on the mere fact that an exit node is enabled. See Exit nodes for the operational rules.
A practical decision test
- Need a route to a particular private prefix? Use a subnet router.
- Need a device’s general web and internet connections to egress elsewhere? Use an exit node.
- Need both? They can coexist, but policy and route selection determine which traffic takes which path.
What happens during a typical connection
- Sign-in: the user or workload authenticates with the configured OpenID Connect identity provider.
- Node enrollment: Tailscale associates that authenticated identity with the device and its locally held node and machine keys.
- Policy evaluation: the control plane determines which peers, routes, and special capabilities are authorized.
- Discovery: permitted public keys and network information are exchanged through the coordination service.
- Path selection: the nodes try to establish a direct encrypted connection. DERP may assist with setup.
- Fallback, if necessary: if direct connectivity fails, DERP forwards the encrypted WireGuard packets.
- Special routing, if configured: a subnet router forwards matching private-network traffic, or an approved exit node forwards the client’s selected non-Tailscale internet traffic.
The sequence explains why authentication, authorization, encryption, and routing should be investigated separately when something fails. A user can authenticate successfully yet be denied by policy; two authorized nodes can have a working policy yet require DERP; and an exit node can be available without being selected by the client.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Tailscale see your traffic?
For a packet carried between Tailscale nodes, the documented protection is that WireGuard encrypts the payload and that private keys remain on the devices. A DERP relay can forward that ciphertext but cannot decrypt the already-encrypted WireGuard payload. The coordination service supplies discovery, keys, configuration, and policy rather than serving as the ordinary plaintext traffic path.
That answer should not be expanded into an absolute claim that no service can observe any metadata. Relays and coordination components need operational information such as participating endpoints and connection state. The documentation cited here establishes payload encryption and key custody; it does not establish that every form of metadata, application-level logging, or endpoint visibility is eliminated.
Once traffic leaves the tailnet through an exit node, the exit device becomes the egress point for that client traffic. Its operating system, local network, firewall, and any separately configured logging can affect what is visible there. Tailscale’s WireGuard guarantee still describes the encrypted hop between tailnet nodes; it does not promise end-to-end secrecy from the chosen exit environment or from the final internet destination.

Policy, approvals, and common failure modes
Authentication succeeds, but a peer is unreachable
Check the tailnet policy and the node identities involved. A valid user login does not override a rule that denies the peer, subnet, or service. Public-key distribution is also constrained by those permissions.
A subnet route appears but does not work
Verify that the subnet router advertised the correct prefix, that an administrator or auto-approver approved it, and that policy allows the requesting node to use it. Confirm that the destination is inside the advertised private range rather than ordinary internet traffic.
An exit node is available but traffic still exits locally
Confirm that the client opted in to that exit node, that the node is approved to provide the role, and that policy permits autogroup:internet. Also check whether the destination is already covered by a subnet router or app connector, because those routes are not captured by the exit node by default.
The connection uses DERP
DERP indicates a relay path, not a loss of WireGuard payload encryption. Investigate firewall and NAT conditions if a direct path is important, but treat the relayed packets as encrypted while they are in transit through DERP.
Policy syntax and authorization details are documented at Policy syntax. UI labels and operational procedures can change, so use the current controls in the linked documentation when approving routes or exit-node use.
Security conclusions that follow from the architecture
- Identity is layered: the identity provider answers who authenticated; node keys answer which device participated; policy answers what that node may access.
- Key custody is local: machine and node private keys stay on their devices, while permitted public keys and configuration are distributed.
- Coordination is not payload forwarding: the control plane coordinates connections and policy; it is not the usual application-traffic path.
- Relaying is not decryption: DERP can forward encrypted WireGuard packets when direct connectivity fails.
- Routing is intentional: subnet routers target selected private networks, while exit nodes target a client’s chosen general internet traffic.
The official pages cited above were accessed on 2026-10-13; the identity page reports validation on 2026-02-11 and the DERP page on 2026-01-21. Those dates matter for operational details such as current relay regions, platform support, interface labels, and policy syntax. The architectural distinctions—identity versus node keys, control versus data plane, encrypted relaying, subnet routing versus exit-node routing—are the basis for interpreting how a current Tailscale deployment handles traffic.
