Short answer: an assist calls an off-screen teammate to perform a support move while your current fighter remains active; a tag switches the active fighter. An assist cooldown is the game-defined lockout after a call, and its trigger, duration and reset condition vary by title and patch. There is no universal “assist timer” that applies to every tag fighter.
DRAGON BALL FighterZ’s official spectator guide is a clear example: each team has three fighters, the on-screen character can call either reserve character for support attacks, and all three can be tagged in and out. Treat FighterZ as an example of the concepts, not a template for every game.

Assist and tag: two different actions
Tag games put more than one character on a team, but the reserve characters do not all enter play in the same way. The distinction is fundamental:
| Action | What happens | Who stays active | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assist call | An off-screen teammate appears briefly to perform a support attack or other defined action, then leaves. | The current point character remains on screen. | Cover an approach, extend a combo, create pressure or interrupt an opponent, depending on the move. |
| Tag | The game brings a reserve teammate in as the active fighter and sends the current character out. | The incoming teammate becomes the point character. | Change matchups, continue a game plan with another moveset, or preserve a hurt character. |
Some games allow both systems, while others give them different inputs, resources or restrictions. A tag may be available when an assist is cooling down, or the two actions may share a rule. Read the individual game’s command list rather than assuming that an assist button also performs a tag.

What an assist cooldown means
A cooldown is the period during which a particular assist cannot be called again. The important question is not simply “How many seconds is it?” but “What event starts the lockout, and what event ends it?” A game can measure the period from the call itself, from the end of an attack, from the end of block pressure or from another combat-state change.
Cooldown start conditions
Common possibilities include:
- The instant the assist attack is summoned.
- When the assist’s attack finishes or the character leaves the screen.
- When a combo, knockdown or block sequence ends.
- When a resource is spent and later regenerates.
- A title-specific event, such as the opponent no longer blocking.
These are comparison categories, not a universal list of rules. A game may use one condition, several conditions or a rule that is not represented here.

Cooldown end conditions
An assist becomes available again when its game-defined condition is satisfied. That might be an elapsed interval, the completion of a neutral reset, the end of a block state or a resource refill. The user interface may show a timer, a dimmed portrait, an icon change or no obvious indicator at all.
FighterZ demonstrates why a simple stopwatch answer can be misleading. Its official version 1.21 notes said players could “no longer use another Z Assist until some time has passed after the opponent stops blocking.” In that historical rule, reuse was tied to the opponent leaving a blocking state, not merely to a fixed number of seconds measured from the button press. Read the February 25, 2020 1.21 notes for the wording and the other changes in that update.
Why assists matter during a match
Creating an opening
An assist can occupy space or force a defensive response while the point character moves. A long-reaching or high-coverage assist may let the active fighter approach behind it; a low, tracking or multi-hit move may make blocking more difficult. The result depends on the attack’s startup, duration, hit level, tracking, recovery and how the game treats assists when they are struck.

Extending a combo
Some assists keep an opponent near the point character or hold them in hitstun long enough to continue a combo. Others launch, wall-bounce or otherwise alter the opponent’s position. Combo routes are move-specific: an assist that works after one starter may fail after another because of hitstun decay, spacing or the assist’s arrival time.
Maintaining pressure
Calling an assist during offense can cover a gap between attacks or let the point character act while the opponent is still blocking. Once that assist is unavailable, the same sequence may become unsafe or easier to challenge. Good pressure therefore includes a plan for the cooldown rather than assuming the support move is always ready.
Controlling risk
An assist call commits a reserve character to an animation and often leaves the point character responsible for protecting it. If the opponent attacks the assist, the reserve character may take damage, become vulnerable or be forced to retreat. The exact punishment rules are title-specific, so test whether an assist can be hit, reflected, countered or punished during recovery.
Selectable assists and character-specific behavior
Not every reserve character provides the same support. Games may assign a fixed assist, offer several selectable types or let a character’s assist vary by direction, button or team setting. In FighterZ, the 1.21-era notes documented three assist options per character, showing that “call this teammate” does not necessarily identify one fixed attack.
When choosing an assist, evaluate the move rather than the character’s reputation:

- Coverage: horizontal reach, vertical reach and whether it tracks an airborne opponent.
- Timing: startup, active frames, duration and how quickly the point character can act afterward.
- Hit effect: blockstun, hitstun, launch, knockdown or a unique interaction.
- Reliability: whether the move works at the distances and heights used by your preferred starters.
- Availability: how the game locks it out and whether the other assist shares that restriction.
Patch notes can change these properties without changing the character’s basic role. Record the game version when you learn a route or setup.

How cooldowns shape decisions
Spend the assist for a defined purpose
Before pressing the call button, identify what the assist is buying: an approach, a confirm, a safe retreat, a combo extension or a defensive interruption. A call that does not produce one of those outcomes may leave you without support when the opponent’s next turn begins.
Track both reserve characters separately
In a three-person team, the two assists may have different attacks and different cooldown states. Calling one does not necessarily make the other unavailable. Watch each portrait or indicator and learn whether the game displays readiness per character, per assist type or as one shared meter.
Plan the cooldown window
When an assist is cooling down, switch to a sequence that does not depend on it. Use movement, whiff punishment, the point character’s own specials or a tag if the rules allow one. This prevents a familiar assist-backed string from becoming a predictable liability once the support move is locked out.
Respect the opponent’s cooldown too
After the opponent spends a major assist, the next few moments may be safer for movement or offense if that assist normally covers their approach. Do not assume it is unavailable for a fixed duration; confirm the game’s indicator or the relevant state change.
FighterZ patch history: why version matters
Cooldown behavior can be rebalanced after release. Bandai Namco’s version 1.41 notes state that the cooldown time before the next use of A-Type and B-Type Z Assists was adjusted, but the cited notes do not give a number of seconds. That makes “the FighterZ assist cooldown is X seconds” an unreliable statement without a version, assist type and test conditions.
The current FighterZ page lists later updates, including version 1.42 in December 2025 and version 1.50 in April 2026. The listed page does not establish whether those later updates changed assist cooldowns again. Players should therefore treat 1.21 and 1.41 as dated historical examples and consult the notes for the version installed on their platform. The update list appears on the official FighterZ page.

A practical method for learning any tag fighter
- Open the command list. Identify the assist input, tag input, available assist types and any resource required.
- Enter training mode. Call each assist from neutral, during a jump-in, during a combo and while defending. Note which situations accept or reject the call.
- Watch the indicator. Record what the portrait, icon or meter shows immediately after the call and when it returns to ready.
- Test the trigger. Block with the training opponent, end the block sequence, perform a combo and reset to neutral. Determine which event actually starts and ends the lockout.
- Test separation. Call one assist, then attempt the other and a tag. This reveals whether the actions share a cooldown, resource or restriction.
- Build one reliable sequence. Choose a simple approach or combo that uses the assist, then practice the same situation without it for the cooldown window.
- Check the patch version. Read the game’s current move list and official update notes before relying on an old timing.
These steps establish the rules for your title without importing assumptions from another game.

Use the following checklist when moving between games or evaluating a new release:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the assist a fixed attack, a selectable move or a character-specific action? | It determines what information you need to learn and whether team construction changes the assist itself. |
| What starts the cooldown? | A call-based lockout behaves differently from one that starts after blocking, a combo or another state change. |
| What makes the assist ready? | You need to know whether to wait, end pressure, regain a resource or trigger another event. |
| Can you call it in neutral, during a combo and while defending? | Availability determines which tactical roles are realistic. |
| Are tags and assists separate actions? | They may have independent inputs and restrictions, or they may share a resource. |
| Which patch is being used? | Balance updates can alter cooldowns and assist properties without changing the headline mechanic. |
Official sources may describe the mechanic without publishing comparable current cooldown numbers across games. If a source does not state a duration, report it as not stated rather than converting a visual animation or a player estimate into a universal value.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming every game uses the same timer
Symptom: you wait a guessed number of seconds and the assist remains unavailable. Fix: identify the title’s actual trigger and read its current notes or training-mode feedback.
Confusing a tag with an assist
Symptom: you expect the current fighter to remain active but the reserve character replaces them. Fix: verify the input and animation for each action in the command list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsing an assist without a follow-up
Symptom: the call looks active but creates no opening or combo. Fix: practice the exact spacing, timing and starter that the assist is meant to support.
Ignoring the cooldown state
Symptom: a familiar pressure sequence fails when the assist button is unavailable. Fix: prepare a no-assist version and watch the indicator before committing.
Learning outdated information
Symptom: a guide’s timing conflicts with current matches. Fix: compare its version date with the installed patch and prioritize newer official notes.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- An assist brings in an off-screen teammate for support while the active fighter stays on screen; a tag changes the active fighter.
- A cooldown prevents immediate reuse, but each game defines its own start event, end event and duration.
- FighterZ’s version 1.21 historically tied Z Assist reuse to time passing after the opponent stopped blocking, while version 1.41 later documented a cooldown adjustment without publishing seconds.
- Assist choices, tag restrictions and cooldown behavior can change in patches, so learn them from the current command list, training mode and official notes.
