In Jahnavi S T’s Syllabus Dungeon, each topic in a database management systems syllabus becomes a monster to defeat by answering questions. The prototype’s normalization encounter gives each monster 3 HP: a correct answer removes one monster HP, while a wrong answer costs the player 10 HP and prompts the Dungeon Master to explain the concept. The project is a prompt-driven study game built around one student’s exam—not a tested general-purpose tutor.
How the syllabus becomes a dungeon
The idea grew from the author’s friend struggling with “Unit 3 (normalization).” Jahnavi describes ordinary flashcard apps as discouraging for the friend because wrong answers produced red crosses and a broken streak. Syllabus Dungeon recasts the material as an RPG: syllabus units become rooms, and individual topics become monsters.
In the sample encounter, normalization takes place in the Cursed Swamp, where the Normalization Slime is the first guardian. The rules make progress visible without treating every mistake as a failure:

- A correct answer removes 1 HP from the monster.
- A wrong answer removes 10 HP from the player, after which the DM explains the correct answer.
- Topics the player struggles with are recorded as weak topics so they can return later.
That structure combines retrieval practice with a simple game loop: answer, receive feedback, and continue. It is the project’s design intent, not evidence that it improves exam scores.

How the DM is meant to quiz from notes
The DM is instructed to make questions from the learner’s notes and provide the relevant source line only after the player answers. Delaying the quotation matters: if the evidence appears alongside the question, it may disclose the answer before the learner has tried to recall it.
Jahnavi describes intentionally confusing second normal form (2NF) with third normal form (3NF) during a self-run demonstration. The DM corrected the mix-up, explained the distinction, applied game damage, and added the topic to the weak-topic list. This shows the intended interaction, but it is an author-described test rather than an independently verified tutoring result.

What the prototype test established—and did not
The author tested the game by playing as the friend and deliberately giving both right and wrong answers. The friend had not played it when the project was described, so there is no account of the intended learner’s experience and no measured change in learning or exam performance.

- The answer appeared too early. An initial rule asked the DM to quote the source too soon, causing the answer to appear with the question. Jahnavi changed the rule so the quotation follows the player’s answer.
- The starting health was missing. Without an explicit starting player HP, the model invented 100. The final prompt specified 100 starting HP and 10 damage for a wrong answer.
These details illustrate why a game prompt needs explicit state and turn rules. They are the author’s account of this build and test session, not a reproduction of the prototype by an independent tester.
Why the author used a hosted model
Jahnavi reports building the game as a system prompt that sets its rules and tone, with the learner’s notes supplied as study material. The model used was Gemma 4 31B IT through Google AI Studio because the author’s laptop did not have enough storage for a local installation.

Google describes Gemma 4 as an open-weight model family and documents both local and hosted deployment paths: Google Gemma documentation. That makes local execution an available option for Gemma, but it does not mean this particular project was run locally. The author’s reported version used hosted AI Studio.

The notes-only constraint and data handling
Jahnavi says that in the AI Studio setup used for the project, Search grounding was forced on for Gemma, which conflicted with the requirement to quiz only from the learner’s notes. Treat this as the author’s experience with that setup, not a rule for every account, model, or current AI Studio configuration. Google describes Search grounding as a service available through AI Studio and the Gemini API: Google Search grounding documentation.

Service terms also depend on whether the service is unpaid or paid. Google’s terms say content submitted to unpaid services—including AI Studio and unpaid Gemini API quota—may be used to provide, improve, and develop Google products and machine-learning technologies; they advise against submitting sensitive, confidential, or personal information to unpaid services. The terms distinguish paid services, where prompts and responses are not used to improve products under the described terms. What to take from the project
Syllabus Dungeon is a compact example of turning course material into a question-driven game with health, feedback, and a revisit list for weak topics. Its most useful implementation lesson is to make the rules precise: define starting state, damage, feedback timing, and when source evidence is shown. Its evidence is equally specific: the author’s own demonstration showed the intended loop, but the intended learner had not tried it, so the project description does not establish learning outcomes.
