Swipe typing turns a continuous finger gesture into a predicted word. You touch the first letter, drag across the letters without lifting, and release after the last letter. The active keyboard—not Android itself—interprets that path, combines it with a dictionary and language model, and displays the most likely result. Gboard calls the feature Glide typing; other Android keyboards may use different names, languages, settings, and decoding methods.
What swipe typing actually does
In ordinary tap typing, each key press is a separate input event. Swipe typing supplies one continuous trace. The keyboard records the touch positions as your finger crosses the keyboard, treats the trace as a representation of a word, and ends the gesture when you lift your finger.
The path is not a literal drawing that must pass through the exact center of every key. Your finger may drift, cross nearby keys, or curve between them. The keyboard uses the overall shape and timing of the trace to estimate which letters you intended, then chooses a word that fits both the path and the surrounding text.

- Open any app with a text field, such as a message or note.
- Touch the first letter of the word.
- Keep your finger on the screen and slide across the remaining letters in order.
- Lift your finger after the final letter. Gboard inserts its chosen word and normally places a space so you can begin the next gesture.
Google Help describes this as sliding from letter to letter to spell words. If the inserted word is wrong, tap a suggestion in the suggestion strip or edit the word manually.

How Gboard decodes a swipe
Google’s technical description of Gboard, published in 2017, presents gesture decoding as a noisy-input recognition problem. Google compares the task in some respects with speech recognition: an imperfect signal is converted into likely units, and a decoder uses language structure to select an output. This is Google’s published account of Gboard at that time, not a guarantee that every Android keyboard uses the same design today.
1. The spatial model turns touch points into likely keys
The keyboard receives a sequence of screen coordinates rather than a neat list of letters. A spatial model estimates how likely each point is to belong to nearby keys. Key size, distance from a key center, the direction of movement, and the shape of the complete path can all affect those likelihoods. Consequently, a trace that misses a key slightly can still produce the intended letter.
2. A lexicon supplies possible words
Candidate letter interpretations are matched against a vocabulary, or lexicon. A path that could represent several combinations is narrowed to words known to the selected language. Names, slang, technical terms, and newly coined words may be absent or less likely unless the keyboard has learned or otherwise supports them.

3. A language model uses context
Gboard’s published explanation also describes probabilistic language models, including n-gram models, that estimate which words are likely in context. The words before the gesture can therefore influence the choice. A path that resembles two words spatially may resolve differently after “I need to” than after “the river.”

4. A decoder ranks the combined evidence
Google describes combining spatial models, lexicons, and language models with a search through the resulting model. The highest-ranked interpretation becomes the displayed word. In technical terms, Google’s account discusses finite-state transducers as part of this decoding architecture. The important practical point is that the result is a prediction from several signals, not a perfect transcription of every point your finger touched.
Why a swipe can produce the wrong word
Errors are expected when two words have similar paths, when the trace crosses an adjacent key for a long distance, or when context strongly favors a different candidate. An unfamiliar word can also lose to a common dictionary word. Google’s 2017 article acknowledges that on-device typing was not solved and reports decoding errors rather than claiming perfect recognition.
Correcting one mistaken result
- Check the suggestion strip immediately after the gesture; selecting an alternative replaces the current word.
- If none of the suggestions is correct, tap into the word and edit individual letters.
- For a rare name or code, tap-type it instead of repeatedly swiping a path the dictionary does not recognize.
- Use the surrounding sentence as a clue: changing an earlier word can change the language model’s ranking for the next gesture.
Making the trace easier to decode
- Start clearly on the first letter and lift only after the final letter.
- Keep the gesture continuous rather than pausing between letters.
- Slow down for words containing adjacent or repeated letters.
- For punctuation, symbols, URLs, or unusual capitalization, use the relevant key or tap entry when a gesture is ambiguous.
How to turn on Glide typing in Gboard
On a typical Android installation, Google’s Help path is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Choose Languages and input.
- Tap Virtual keyboard, then Gboard.
- Open the option labeled Glide typing and enable the gesture-typing control.
Labels and paths can differ on manufacturer-customized Android builds. If you cannot find the setting, open Gboard’s own settings from the keyboard and look for Glide typing, gesture typing, or a similarly named control. Google notes that some Help steps require Android 8.0 or later, or a specified companion-app version when using a Pixel Watch. That note is not a universal minimum for every phone, Android release, or keyboard. If the documented path does not match your device, Google advises checking the device manufacturer’s instructions.

Confirm that Gboard is the active keyboard
Installing Gboard does not necessarily make it the keyboard currently handling text fields. Android’s soft-input framework displays the on-screen keyboard when an app field receives focus, and the selected input method supplies the keys and features. Use the keyboard switcher shown on your device, or the system’s virtual-keyboard settings, to select Gboard before testing Glide typing.
Android’s role versus the keyboard app’s role
Android provides the soft-input context: an app requests text input, the system shows an input method, and that method sends committed text back to the app. Swipe recognition is a feature implemented by that input method. Gboard supplies the Glide typing gesture, its candidate ranking, and its controls; another keyboard may use another algorithm, a different setting name, or no gesture typing at all.
| Layer | What it provides | What can vary |
|---|---|---|
| Android and the app | Text-field focus, input-method selection, and delivery of committed text | System menus, manufacturer skin, and app behavior |
| Active keyboard | Key layout, swipe decoder, suggestions, dictionaries, and privacy controls | Feature name, algorithm, supported languages, and correction options |
| Language configuration | Lexicon and language-model data used to rank words | Whether Glide typing is available and how well uncommon words are covered |
Does swipe typing work in your language?
Availability is language-dependent. Google Help explicitly says that not all languages support the feature. A language can be installed for ordinary tap typing while lacking Glide typing, or it can have different gesture behavior from another language in the same keyboard.

If Glide typing disappears after switching languages, that is usually a support or configuration difference rather than a damaged screen. A custom Android build can also expose different menu labels. No current, independent source has published evidence that every supported language has the same accuracy or dictionary coverage.

Privacy and on-device processing
Google’s April 2024 Gboard language-model documentation says Gboard language models support next-word prediction, autocorrection, Smart Compose, slide-to-type, and proofread. It describes work on out-of-vocabulary words using on-device discovery, federated analytics, differential privacy, and secure-hardware infrastructure, and says Google provides data-usage disclosures and configuration controls.
Google’s Pixel privacy information says Gboard uses federated learning to improve autocorrect and suggestions. In that described Pixel/Gboard context, Google says information learned by Gboard might be sent to Google services without including what the user typed or spoke. This is not an assertion that no typing-related information ever leaves a device, that every Gboard feature is local, or that other keyboards use the same process.
What to check before using a different keyboard
- Read that keyboard’s current privacy disclosure, because data practices are vendor- and feature-specific.
- Review its settings for personalization, learning, diagnostics, cloud features, and account synchronization.
- Check whether disabling a cloud or personalization option also disables suggestions or gesture features.
- For sensitive text, follow your organization’s policy and use a keyboard configuration you understand.
What performance claims do—and do not—mean
Google reported in 2017 that the average user was roughly 35% slower typing on a mobile device than on a physical keyboard. That is a dated, general mobile-typing figure, not an independent benchmark of swipe typing and not a guarantee for a current phone.
The same 2017 Google article reported historical results: later models were about six times faster and ten times smaller than initial versions, with approximately 15% fewer bad autocorrects and 10% fewer wrongly decoded gestures on offline datasets. Those were Google-reported development results under the conditions described at publication; they should not be read as current cross-keyboard performance guarantees.

How to compare Android keyboards fairly
No current independent head-to-head performance ranking was published. Instead of assuming one keyboard is universally faster or more accurate, compare the factors that directly affect your use:
| Comparison question | Why it matters | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Does it support gesture typing in your language? | A keyboard may offer swiping in one language but not another. | Select the language and test several ordinary and uncommon words. |
| How are corrections handled? | Suggestion strips, auto-correction, undo controls, and editing shortcuts differ. | Swipe a deliberately ambiguous word and inspect the available alternatives. |
| What privacy controls are documented? | Learning, diagnostics, and cloud services can vary by keyboard. | Read the current disclosure and inspect in-app settings. |
| Is it compatible with your Android build? | System menus, permissions, and input-method behavior can be customized. | Install it on the target device and confirm it appears under virtual-keyboard settings. |
Troubleshooting when Glide typing does not work
The keyboard inserts separate letters instead of a word
- Confirm Gboard is the active input method rather than another installed keyboard.
- Reopen Gboard settings and verify Glide typing is enabled.
- Check that the selected language supports the feature.
- Test in a basic text field; an individual app can restrict or alter input behavior.
The option is missing
Look under Gboard’s own settings as well as Android’s virtual-keyboard menu. Manufacturer software can rename or relocate controls. Verify the Android version and Gboard version, and consult the device maker if Google’s documented path does not exist on your build.
Words are consistently wrong
- Test a short, common word to separate a configuration problem from an ambiguous path.
- Make the trace more deliberate, especially around neighboring keys.
- Check the active language and keyboard layout.
- Use suggestions or tap typing for names, technical terms, and other words outside the normal lexicon.
Swipe works in one language but not another
That behavior is consistent with language-specific support. Keep the supported language selected for gesture entry, or use tap typing in the language without Glide typing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen swipe typing is the right tool
Gesture typing is useful when you are entering ordinary words quickly with one thumb and can tolerate occasional corrections. It is less predictable for passwords, serial numbers, code, URLs, heavy punctuation, and specialized vocabulary. Those inputs contain symbols or word forms that a natural-language lexicon and language model may not rank correctly. Switching between gestures and taps is normal: use the method that matches the text rather than forcing every character through a swipe.
