Swapneswar Sundar Ray describes his work as Assistant Vice President and Principal Machine Learning Engineer at U.S. Bank as a blend of enterprise AI, generative-AI platforms, agentic workflows, cloud architecture, security, and responsible-AI controls. In a HackerNoon Writers Spotlight interview published October 6, 2026, he also explains why Python is his broad-use choice—not a rule for every project—and why understanding users and governing AI matter as much as building capable systems.

What does Ray say his role involves?

In the interview, Ray describes a role that spans technical design and the practical demands of deploying AI in an enterprise. He says his work touches enterprise AI systems and generative-AI platforms, along with agentic workflows, APIs, and cloud architecture. He also identifies cybersecurity and responsible-AI controls as part of the work.

This is Ray’s account of his responsibilities; the interview does not independently verify his employment or describe particular systems as deployed at the bank. His description nevertheless makes clear that he sees enterprise machine learning as more than model development: it involves the surrounding infrastructure, security, and organizational safeguards.

How did he get into programming and AI?

Ray traces his route through computer applications study and a Master of Computer Applications degree, followed by work across software engineering, architecture, cloud platforms, machine learning, and enterprise AI. The interview presents this as a progression across connected areas rather than a dated employment timeline.

  • Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.

That breadth helps explain his emphasis on understanding systems end to end. His professional path, as he tells it, moved from building software toward designing architectures and working with machine-learning and AI capabilities in enterprise settings.

Why does he choose Python, with qualifications?

Asked which language he would use to build broadly, Ray selects Python because he sees it as useful across AI and machine learning, automation, APIs, data engineering, and scientific computing. But he explicitly cautions against treating that answer as a universal prescription: language choice should follow the problem.

Language What Ray’s interview says about fit
Python His broad-use choice, citing AI/ML, automation, APIs, data engineering, and scientific computing.
Java May be preferable for particular performance or enterprise requirements.
JavaScript May suit particular platform needs.
TypeScript May suit particular platform or enterprise needs.

These are Ray’s general observations, not a benchmark or a comparative language evaluation. The practical takeaway is to start with the application’s constraints—such as its runtime, platform, performance needs, and existing environment—rather than choosing a language by slogan.

What does he think software developers should do more often?

Ray’s central point is to understand the user’s actual problem before writing code. As he puts it: “Developers do not always spend enough time understanding the actual user problem before writing code.” That means identifying who needs the software, what outcome they need, and what constraints shape a useful solution before implementation begins.

  • Observability: Make it possible to understand how a system behaves and diagnose problems.
  • Security: Treat protection as part of system design, not an afterthought.
  • Documentation: Explain how a system works so others can use and maintain it.
  • Failure handling: Plan for errors and degraded conditions rather than assuming the happy path.
  • Responsible design: Consider the effects and controls needed for the system’s intended use.

Why is he interested in agentic AI—and cautious about it?

Ray says he is interested in agentic AI, but his view is not simply that more autonomy is better. He stresses authorization, human oversight, observability, evaluation, audit trails, and runtime guardrails as essential governance concerns. Those controls address distinct questions: what an agent may do, when people must remain involved, how its behavior can be inspected, and how actions can be reviewed.

He summarizes the challenge this way: “The important challenge is no longer just making AI more capable; it is ensuring that autonomous systems remain secure, accountable, and aligned with organizational policies.” The interview describes his interests and priorities; it does not establish that a particular agentic system is in production at his employer.

What does he predict about AI’s future?

In a speculative answer, Ray expects specialized AI assistants to participate in everyday business processes. He does not present this as a guaranteed outcome. He also expects human expertise to remain important for architecture, verification, security, ethics, and accountability—areas where organizations must decide whether an AI-assisted result is appropriate and trustworthy.

His forecast puts governance at the center of adoption: “The most successful organizations will not necessarily deploy the most AI; they will be the ones that govern it most effectively.” That is Ray’s view of what will distinguish organizations, not a measured finding or a claim about future results.
