StudyBuddy is a gamified study dashboard with a small AI companion: finishing tasks earns XP, streaks track consistency, and a virtual plant responds to study activity. Its creator, Abiba Naushad, built it for her friend Laiba, who found studying boring and felt overwhelmed by long to-do lists. Naushad describes the project as help with motivation and study overwhelm—not a clinically evaluated way to prevent, diagnose, or treat burnout.

What StudyBuddy is designed to do

Naushad describes a study loop that turns a large workload into smaller, visible actions. A student adds study tasks, completes them to earn XP, and sees progress reflected in streaks and the state of a virtual plant. The plant grows with activity and can wilt when the student is inactive. A local AI companion adds encouragement, study suggestions, simple daily insights, and a generated quote when the dashboard opens.

The features are connected rather than independent: tasks create progress to track, and the plant gives that progress a visual consequence. The companion is framed as a study aid, not a general-purpose assistant. These are the author’s descriptions of the design and behavior, not independently tested product results. How the app is built

In her project article, Naushad reports using React and Tailwind for the frontend, a lightweight Python Flask server to bridge requests to AI, and Google’s Gemma 2B model served locally through Ollama. The browser app uses localStorage to persist daily streak information. The Flask backend calls Ollama’s local API at localhost:11434.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

She also describes using Ollama’s keep_alive parameter to keep the model loaded during study sessions, avoiding a cold start on each interaction, and a /quote route that requests a fresh motivational quote when the dashboard opens. These are implementation details as reported by the author; the article does not provide independent code inspection or runtime testing. Project implementation details

The architecture in plain language

The reported flow is student to tasks to XP and progress, with progress reflected in the plant and the companion offering encouragement. The browser stores streak state locally, while the Flask server passes AI requests to the local Ollama service. This separates the dashboard interface from the model-serving layer without requiring a cloud inference API in the described setup.

What “local AI” does—and does not—mean for privacy

Naushad’s stated rationale for local inference was to keep her friend’s study habits and chats on her own machine, avoid per-request cloud API charges, and allow use without campus internet. Google describes Gemma as an open-weight model family that can run on laptops, desktops, or cloud infrastructure, and its execution documentation lists Ollama as a local-running option. Running a model locally can reduce reliance on a hosted inference service, but it is not by itself proof that every part of an application is private. The project article does not document a security audit, network monitoring, data-retention policy, or deployment configuration. Nor does it specify what hardware Naushad used or establish minimum requirements for StudyBuddy. Google’s general support for laptop deployment is not a hardware specification for this particular app.

Google’s Ollama guide notes that quantization can reduce resource requirements, with a possible trade-off in output quality. That is a general deployment consideration; the project article reports no comparison of model settings or response quality for StudyBuddy. Google’s guide to running Gemma with Ollama

What the project shows about motivation—and what it cannot prove

Naushad says Laiba responded to the app by saying, “It feels like someone is holding my hand while I do my DSA problems.” The line conveys the personal reaction the project was intended to support, but it is one anecdotal response, not a measured outcome. The author’s account of Laiba’s reaction

The title’s phrase “overcome burnout” should therefore be read as the project’s motivating frame, not as an established clinical result. The account describes boredom, overwhelm, stress, and motivation; it does not show that StudyBuddy prevents, diagnoses, or treats burnout. Google presents Gemma as a general-purpose model foundation and places responsibility for safe use on those deploying it in applications. Google’s intended-use statement

Why the build is a useful pattern for a small study tool

The project combines a lightweight reward system with locally served AI rather than making the model the whole product. XP and streaks make task completion visible; the plant gives progress a simple visual metaphor; short encouragement and suggestions add a conversational layer. The technical choices described by Naushad—React, Tailwind, Flask, localStorage, and Ollama—show how those pieces were assembled in this particular build, without establishing that the same stack is required for another app.

For someone adapting the idea, the key design question is not merely which model to use, but what job the assistant should perform: a brief nudge, a study suggestion, or an insight about the day’s activity. Local inference changes deployment trade-offs—such as dependence on cloud connectivity, device resources, and potential output-quality effects of quantization—but the available account does not provide project-specific measurements for those trade-offs.
