StudyBuddy Local is a software project that uses a learner’s own documents to answer questions and support revision. Its builders describe local document processing and AI models running on the user’s computer, rather than a cloud-based study service. The feature set and technical detail differ between two project write-ups, and their privacy claims are descriptions by the builders—not independent security audits.
What StudyBuddy Local does
StudyBuddy Local is presented as a way to study from your own notes and documents. Instead of asking a general-purpose chatbot to answer from its broad training, you ask about material you provide; the system finds relevant passages and uses them as context for a local language model.
The two project authors describe related ideas, but they do not document one identical, independently verified implementation. Utkarsh Mandilwar gives a specific technical pipeline, while Ayush Kumar emphasizes a broader set of study features in a modular application.

How the document-question workflow is described
Mandilwar describes a retrieval-augmented generation workflow: the application processes a document, searches stored representations for relevant passages, and supplies those passages to a language model to help it answer. The post says answers include source citations, so a learner can see which material the response draws on.

- Extract and prepare content: It extracts text and page metadata, then divides the material into chunks.
- Index locally: It creates embeddings on the computer and stores them in ChromaDB.
- Retrieve context: A question is matched to relevant passages in the indexed material.
- Generate a response: A local Ollama model uses the retrieved passages to answer, with source citations described by the author.
Mandilwar names Qwen2.5 3B as the default model in that implementation. This is a model designation, not a performance or learning-outcome measurement.
Which study tools are described
The feature lists vary between the two accounts. Mandilwar describes grounded question answering, validated quizzes, summaries, and revision notes. Kumar describes question answering, explanations of difficult topics, quizzes, summaries, flashcards, and hints. Those lists should be read as descriptions of separate project write-ups, not a guarantee that every feature is available in a single current release.

What “private” and “offline” mean here
Both authors frame local processing as a way to keep study material on the learner’s computer. Mandilwar says the interface binds to localhost, Streamlit usage statistics are disabled, and the project has no cloud fallback; the author also says documents and the vector database are excluded from Git. These are the builder’s stated design choices, not the result of an independent privacy or security audit.
Offline use is described as possible after installation and after required model and embedding weights have been downloaded. That distinction matters: local operation does not mean setup requires no network access. The posts describe intended behavior rather than reporting an independent offline test.

Limits to consider before relying on it
- Scanned PDFs: Mandilwar says scanned documents need OCR before their text can be used.
- Complex tables: The author notes that smaller local models can misread complex tables, so verify extracted facts and calculations against the original document.
- Index reliability: The post identifies read-after-write verification of the vector collection as a hardening step worth considering.
- Unestablished requirements: The two posts do not establish current maintenance, supported operating systems, hardware requirements, licensing, or measured learning outcomes.
What to check when evaluating a local study assistant
The project descriptions suggest practical questions to answer before using any local document assistant for important study work:
- Which formats can it ingest, and does it include OCR for scanned pages?
- Can you inspect citations and confirm that they point to the right page or passage?
- Which model and embedding files must be downloaded, and what computer resources do they require?
- Does the application remain offline after setup, and are telemetry or cloud connections clearly disclosed?
- Can you check quiz answers and summaries against your source documents?
The cited project pages do not provide comparative benchmarks or establish answers to all of these questions for a current version of StudyBuddy Local. They are useful as descriptions of the builders’ approaches, not as a substitute for checking the software’s present status and behavior.
