Raditz is a major threat in the opening of Dragon Ball Z, but he is not one of the strongest Saiyans. In the Raditz arc, he overwhelms Goku and Piccolo fighting together, survives Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon attempt long enough to remain dangerous, and is defeated only after Goku creates an opening by restraining his tail and Gohan’s tackle helps hold him in place. The same official material describes Raditz as one of the weaker Saiyan fighters. A temporary rage surge lets young Gohan hit him hard, while Nappa and Vegeta arrive later as clearly greater threats.
That conclusion is qualitative rather than a precise ranking with multipliers. The official profiles do not give Raditz a definitive Power Level, so the fairest comparison uses story stage, fight results, and the difference between ordinary ability and temporary surges.
What Raditz’s strength means in the story
Raditz appears at the beginning of the Saiyan storyline, before Goku has trained with King Kai and before the surviving Earth fighters have prepared for the next invasion. His arrival establishes that the world’s previous victories have not prepared its heroes for Saiyan combat.
The key point is that Raditz is powerful relative to the early heroes, not powerful by the standards of the Saiyan elite who follow him. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2021 character profile calls attention to Nappa’s cruel description of Raditz as a “weakling” and says Raditz appears to be one of the weaker Saiyan fighters. That is a statement about his position among Saiyans, not a measured numerical ranking.

No exact Raditz Power Level is stated in the cited official pages. Fan lists often repeat a number, but conflicting secondary compilations are not enough to make that figure settled canon. A numerical comparison such as “Nappa is exactly X times stronger” would therefore go beyond what the official profiles establish.
Raditz versus Goku and Piccolo
Why Raditz overwhelms them
Goku and Piccolo are the strongest available defenders when Raditz lands on Earth. They put aside their rivalry and attack him together, yet the official Raditz profile says his power overwhelms them. Raditz’s speed, durability, and combat experience keep him in control even while facing both fighters.
That result should not be read as proof that Raditz would defeat every version of Goku or Piccolo. It applies to the opening of the Saiyan arc, before Goku’s training with King Kai and before Piccolo’s later growth through battle and training. Story stage is essential: later versions of either character are operating on a different scale.

How the heroes actually win
The battle ends through coordination and a weakness, not a clean one-on-one victory. Goku manages to seize Raditz’s tail, temporarily disabling him. Raditz’s tail is a vulnerability, and Goku uses it to create the opening Piccolo needs. Gohan then rams Raditz with a headbutt, helping Goku keep him restrained while Piccolo fires the Special Beam Cannon.

Piccolo’s attack is decisive, but the circumstances matter. Goku is holding Raditz in place, and Gohan’s intervention contributes to that restraint. The scene demonstrates that Raditz is above either early fighter in a straightforward exchange while also showing that teamwork and exploiting a weakness can overcome him.
Raditz versus Gohan
The 1,307 headbutt
During the fight, Gohan’s anger triggers a temporary Power Level of 1,307, according to the Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2021 profile of Saiyan-arc Gohan. The surge lets Gohan burst from Raditz’s spacecraft and knock Raditz backward with a flying headbutt.
This is evidence of latent potential, not Gohan’s normal combat level. He does not maintain 1,307 throughout the fight, and the headbutt does not amount to a sustained solo victory. Raditz remains the dominant combatant until Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo combine their efforts.

A temporary reading for Gohan cannot be converted into Raditz’s exact number. The official account gives the reading to show how explosive Gohan’s hidden potential can be; it does not state that Raditz’s level is a particular amount above or below 1,307. The physical result is clear—Gohan can injure or stagger Raditz when enraged—but the episode does not establish a stable numerical ratio between them.

Raditz versus Nappa
The official qualitative gap
Nappa is presented as a higher-level Saiyan threat. The Raditz profile has Nappa call him a “weakling,” and it concludes that Raditz seems to be among the weaker Saiyan fighters. A later Dragon Ball Official Site retrospective adds an important reaction: Piccolo, who had helped overcome Raditz, is shocked by Nappa’s power when the next Saiyans reach Earth.
Those two details create a strong story-based comparison. Raditz is terrifying to the unprepared heroes at the start; Nappa makes Piccolo realize that the danger has escalated again. The material does not provide a Raditz-to-Nappa multiplier, so the accurate conclusion is a clear qualitative gap rather than an invented ratio.
Why the order of events matters
Raditz fights before Goku receives King Kai’s training and before the defenders have time to prepare for the invasion. By the time Nappa appears, the heroes have gained experience and still find his power overwhelming. Comparing the two only by isolated scenes can miss that escalation: Raditz introduces Saiyan superiority, while Nappa demonstrates that Raditz was not the ceiling.
Raditz versus Vegeta
Vegeta’s status and performance
Vegeta arrives with Nappa as the Saiyan prince and an elite warrior. In the Saiyan arc, he eventually takes over the confrontation with Goku and defeats him after Nappa’s part in the battle ends. The official Vegeta profile and the Saiyan-arc retrospective place him well above the threat Raditz represented.

Vegeta’s title alone is not a numerical measurement, but the narrative consistently uses his rank, combat ability, and control of the invasion to show that he stands above Raditz. Raditz is dispatched through a carefully coordinated ambush; Vegeta remains a direct, dominant opponent for the better-prepared Goku later in the arc.
What cannot be claimed
The official pages do not give matching numerical readings for Raditz and Vegeta that would support an exact ratio. It is accurate to say Vegeta is far stronger in the story’s hierarchy. It is not accurate to attach a definitive multiplier to that difference using the cited official material.

Why Gohan’s 2,800 reading matters
The same official Gohan profile records a later anger-driven Power Level of 2,800 against Nappa, after Piccolo has trained him. This occurs after the Raditz battle and illustrates how quickly Gohan’s readings can change with training and emotion.

Baseline strength, surges, and fight outcomes
Baseline standing
Raditz’s baseline standing is best described as above the early Goku-and-Piccolo team in a direct fight, but below Nappa and Vegeta among the Saiyans who invade Earth. This wording preserves the evidence without pretending that every character has a reliable number at every moment.
Temporary power spikes
Gohan’s 1,307 reading is a spike caused by rage and latent potential. His later 2,800 reading is another spike after training. These events show that a single scouter reading can capture an exceptional moment rather than a fighter’s everyday capability. Raditz himself also exploits the difference between apparent and actual danger: he is confident enough to invade Earth, yet his Saiyan comrades regard him as expendable and weak by their standards.
What a victory proves
Raditz’s defeat proves that the heroes can win through a coordinated plan. It does not prove that Goku or Piccolo could each defeat him alone at that point. Gohan’s headbutt proves that latent potential can produce a damaging burst. It does not establish Gohan as a consistently stronger fighter. Nappa and Vegeta’s later performances prove escalation, not a precise conversion formula.
The most defensible ranking
- Early Goku and Piccolo individually: below Raditz in a straightforward exchange.
- Early Goku and Piccolo together: still outmatched until they exploit Raditz’s tail and coordinate with Gohan.
- Gohan during the 1,307 surge: capable of startling and striking Raditz, but not a sustained superior opponent.
- Raditz: a severe opening-arc threat and one of the weaker Saiyans by Nappa’s standard.
- Nappa: clearly above Raditz in the invasion’s narrative escalation.
- Vegeta: an elite Saiyan and the dominant threat among the pair that follows Raditz.
This is a story-stage ranking, not a universal Dragon Ball power chart. Transformations, later training, fusion, and subsequent arcs change the comparison completely.
Where Raditz fits in the manga and official retrospectives
Raditz’s introduction and defeat are featured in Dragon Ball Z manga volume 17, identified by the Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2024 retrospective on the fierce battle against the invading Saiyans. That retrospective connects Raditz’s arrival to the larger Saiyan arc and emphasizes that the two Saiyans who come after him represent a greater danger.
Another useful line from that 2024 retrospective is Raditz’s reaction, “Power Level… only 5. What a planet!” In context, the line reflects his astonishment at the extremely low reading of an ordinary Earth person; it is not Raditz’s own Power Level. Keeping that context prevents the quote from being misused as a character statistic.
Bottom line
Raditz is stronger than early Goku or Piccolo in a direct fight and can overwhelm them together. Gohan’s rage briefly reaches 1,307 and gives him enough force to knock Raditz back, but that is a latent-potential burst rather than a stable victory. Nappa is clearly above Raditz, and Vegeta stands higher still as an elite Saiyan and the arc’s dominant surviving threat. Because no exact official Raditz Power Level is established, the reliable answer is this narrative hierarchy—not a disputed numerical multiplier.
