Yes, SteamOS can drive a TV gaming PC, but it is not a universal, officially supported replacement for Windows on every desktop. SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based operating system with a controller-first Steam interface, a conventional Linux desktop, and Proton for running many Windows games. On a general desktop, you connect the computer’s own HDMI or DisplayPort output to the television; you do not need a Steam Deck or a Steam Deck Docking Station.

The important distinction is between possible and officially supported. Valve’s current FAQ identifies Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S as officially supported devices and says compatibility has improved for other AMD-powered handhelds. It does not establish blanket official support for every living-room desktop PC. A desktop installation is therefore a hardware- and troubleshooting-dependent project, while a supported SteamOS device is closer to a console appliance.

What SteamOS actually is

Valve describes SteamOS as “Valve’s Linux-based operating system.” It is an Arch Linux-based distribution maintained for Steam gaming devices. The Steam Client is the main shell: it signs in to Steam services, presents your library, installs games and updates, and provides a gamepad-oriented interface intended to be used from a sofa.

SteamOS also includes a standard Linux desktop. You can leave the game interface to install other launchers, browsers and Linux software, manage files, or change system settings. Valve cautions that users should not treat SteamOS as a replacement for their general desktop operating system, so desktop applications and peripherals can require Linux-specific setup.

Game mode and desktop mode

  • Game mode: the full-screen Steam interface, controller navigation, library management and quick suspend/resume features.
  • Desktop mode: a KDE Plasma Linux desktop for software installation, file management and advanced configuration.

This split explains why SteamOS can feel console-like without being a closed console. A controller is enough for launching supported games, but a keyboard and mouse remain useful for desktop tasks, launchers that do not expose every option to a controller, and troubleshooting.

How Windows games run through Proton

Most PC games were made for Windows rather than Linux. SteamOS addresses that through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. Proton translates the Windows game’s calls into interfaces that can run on Linux, allowing developers to distribute many games without making a separate Linux port.

Proton is not an emulator that guarantees identical behavior. Compatibility depends on the game, its launcher, anti-cheat system, video codecs, middleware, controller support and the particular Proton version. Valve tests the Steam catalog and uses its Verified program to show which games work well and where limitations exist. Check the game’s current SteamOS/Proton status before assuming that a title will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve’s SteamOS page says the system “plays tens of thousands of games” and separately says Proton enabled “over 18,000 titles last we checked.” Those are undated vendor statements, not a current independently measured compatibility percentage. A game marked Verified is a stronger buying signal than a catalog-wide count, but even a rating can change after a game or Proton update.

What a compatibility check should cover

  • Whether the game starts and reaches gameplay rather than only its launcher.
  • Whether the required anti-cheat service works on Linux.
  • Whether text, cut-scenes, voice chat and launchers behave correctly.
  • Whether your preferred controller layout and suspend/resume behavior work.
  • Whether the rating applies to the current game and Proton version, not an old report.

Is a desktop gaming PC officially supported?

Valve’s SteamOS FAQ says most installations should arrive preinstalled on a Steam Deck or another device incorporating SteamOS. On the page retrieved for this article, Valve lists Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S as officially supported and says support has improved for other AMD-powered handhelds. Valve also provides installation instructions for people who want to test SteamOS on other hardware.

That wording creates three different situations:

Situation What it means Practical expectation
Officially supported device Valve names the hardware as supported. Use the vendor’s intended image, updates and recovery process; problems are more likely to have documented fixes.
Other AMD handheld Valve reports improved compatibility, but does not present every model as an officially supported product. Some features may work well, while model-specific controls, firmware or displays still need testing.
General desktop gaming PC The FAQ does not establish blanket official support. Treat installation as experimental. Verify graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, controller and TV-output behavior for your exact hardware.

A desktop can therefore be a capable SteamOS TV machine without being a Valve-supported SteamOS appliance. Keep a recovery plan and another operating system available if the PC is needed for work or for games that do not run through Proton.

Connecting a SteamOS PC to a television

Desktop PC: use its own video output

For a conventional gaming tower or mini-PC, connect the television to an output on the computer’s graphics card, or to the motherboard output when the processor and firmware support it. The correct port, cable, resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode and variable-refresh behavior depend on the specific GPU, TV and cable. The supplied sources do not establish one universal “best” resolution or cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off or sleep the PC if your hardware requires it for safe cable changes.
  2. Connect the GPU’s HDMI or DisplayPort output to a matching TV input. If the TV accepts HDMI only, use a suitable, standards-compliant adapter when necessary.
  3. Select that input on the television.
  4. In SteamOS display settings, choose a resolution and refresh rate supported by both the PC output and TV.
  5. Test audio output, HDR and variable refresh independently; do not assume that a high refresh-rate mode also enables HDR or VRR.
  6. Pair a wireless controller or connect one by USB, then return to Game Mode for sofa use.

Steam Deck: a dock is optional hardware

Valve’s Docking Station is an accessory for a Steam Deck, not a requirement for a desktop SteamOS computer. It connects over USB-C and provides HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, networking, USB ports and power passthrough. Valve lists up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz for the dock, subject to the display and connection chain.

Valve explicitly says the Docking Station provides charging and connectivity but “no additional performance benefits.” Third-party USB-C hubs and docks can also be used with a Deck. These are Deck accessory facts; they do not mean a desktop PC needs a dock or gains graphics performance from one.

SteamOS display features depend on the release channel

Do not treat every feature mentioned in a SteamOS announcement as available on every installation. Valve’s stable SteamOS 3.7.8 release notes, dated May 22, 2025, describe a newer Arch Linux base, Linux kernel 6.11, KDE Plasma 6.2.5, frame limiting with VRR displays, display compatibility improvements and smoother switching between desktop and game modes. Read the dated notes at Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.8 announcement.

Later SteamOS 3.8.7 notes are explicitly labeled Beta/Preview. They describe KDE Plasma 6.4.3, Wayland as the default desktop session, better out-of-the-box TV scaling, and external HDR and VRR support. They also document a TCL TV issue that required a dock firmware update. These are beta-channel observations, not a promise that every stable installation or television behaves the same way. See Valve’s SteamOS 3.8.7 Beta notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official feed also lists SteamOS 3.7.23 as released to all users, but the retrieved listing did not provide a complete stable-release note set. Do not describe 3.7.8 as the latest stable version; use it as a dated example of documented behavior and identify 3.8.7 as beta material.

Step-by-step: planning a living-room SteamOS PC

1. Audit the hardware before replacing an operating system

  • Identify the graphics processor and confirm that the intended SteamOS image and Linux graphics stack recognize it.
  • Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Bluetooth, audio, storage and sleep/wake behavior.
  • Confirm the TV’s inputs and the refresh rate, HDR and VRR modes you want to use.
  • Back up files and create recovery media for the current operating system.

Because Valve does not promise blanket desktop support, this audit is more important on a custom PC than on a Steam Deck. Hardware that boots may still lack a working wireless adapter, controller pairing, audio path or reliable suspend.

2. Install or test without destroying your current setup

Use Valve’s installation instructions for the image and procedure appropriate to your hardware. If the PC contains important data, test from removable media or use a separate drive rather than overwriting the only installation. Keep the recovery image and a wired keyboard available in case the TV does not show a picture during first boot.

3. Complete first-run updates and display setup

  1. Connect Ethernet when possible for the first update and game downloads.
  2. Apply available SteamOS and firmware updates.
  3. Set the TV’s native or preferred resolution and a refresh rate that the entire connection chain supports.
  4. Test desktop mode, then return to Game Mode and verify that the controller can navigate menus.
  5. Check audio output and whether the TV is receiving the selected HDR or VRR mode.

4. Install one known-good game first

Choose a game with a current Verified rating, install it, launch it, and test controls, audio, suspend/resume and performance before downloading a large library. Then add games with lower ratings one at a time so a compatibility problem is attributable to a specific title or Proton configuration.

5. Add non-Steam software only after the core path works

Desktop mode allows additional launchers and software, but each launcher may have its own Linux, Proton and controller issues. Establish a reliable Steam-and-TV baseline before adding several layers of third-party software.

Common TV and game problems

The TV shows no signal

  • Confirm that the cable is connected to the active GPU output and the TV input selected.
  • Try a lower resolution or refresh rate supported by both devices.
  • Use a direct connection temporarily, removing adapters, receivers or docks from the chain.
  • Connect a monitor or use desktop mode to change display settings if the TV cannot show the current mode.

HDR or VRR is missing

Check the TV input’s own enhanced or gaming mode, the GPU output, cable and SteamOS channel. A feature described in a beta announcement is not evidence that the same feature exists in your stable build. Confirm each link in the chain rather than changing several variables at once.

A game will not launch

  • Check its current SteamOS/Proton and Verified information.
  • Install pending SteamOS, game and controller updates.
  • Try the Proton version recommended by the game’s current reports, if you understand how to change it.
  • Look for an anti-cheat, launcher or codec limitation; these can prevent startup even when other games work.

The controller works in games but not in desktop mode

This is expected in some workflows: Game Mode is designed around controller navigation, while desktop applications often assume a pointer and keyboard. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for configuration and launchers, and use Game Mode for the controller-first interface.

The Deck dock behaves differently from a desktop connection

A dock can add ports and charging to a Deck, but it does not increase performance. On a desktop, connect the TV to the computer’s own graphics output instead of buying a Deck dock for a machine that cannot use it as intended.

SteamOS PC versus a Steam Deck for TV play

Decision factor Steam Deck with external display General SteamOS desktop PC
Support status Steam Deck is listed by Valve as officially supported. No blanket official desktop-PC support is established by the FAQ.
TV connection USB-C dock or hub is optional; Valve’s dock supplies display, power and ports. Use the PC’s HDMI or DisplayPort output.
Performance expansion The official dock adds no performance. Performance comes from the installed CPU and GPU.
Game compatibility Check each game’s Proton and Verified status. Check the same status, plus desktop hardware and driver behavior.
Living-room convenience Integrated handheld controls and a console-like Game Mode. Requires a separate controller and usually a keyboard/mouse for maintenance.
Flexibility Desktop mode remains available, but hardware is fixed. More storage and component choices, with more configuration responsibility.

For a ready-made, controller-first experience, an officially supported SteamOS device has fewer unknowns. For a PC you already own, SteamOS can make sense when you accept experimental support, verify your games and are prepared to troubleshoot TV and Linux hardware issues.
